Multi-element determination of metals and metalloids in waters and wastewaters, at trace concentration level, using electroanalytical stripping methods with environmentally friendly mercury free-electrodes: A review

Nowadays, water is no longer regarded as an inexhaustible resource and the excessive release and proliferation of toxic metal(loid)s into aquatic environments has become a critical issue. Therefore, fast, accurate, simple, selective, sensitive and portable methodologies to detect multiple elements in natural waters is of paramount importance. Electrochemical stripping analysis is an efficient tool for trace metal(loid)s determinations and bring new prospects for answering the current environmental concerns. This review presents a survey of the advancements made between 2003 and 2016 on the development and application of non-toxic mercury free electrodes on the simultaneous analysis of metals and metalloids in waters and wastewaters by means of electroanalytical stripping techniques. The advantages, limitations, improvements and real applications of these "green" sensors are discussed from a critical point of view.

New chemometric approach MCR-ALS to unmix EPR spectroscopic data from complex mixtures

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of mixtures are often difficult to interpret due to the superposition of spectral contribution of various species present in the complex materials. It is challenging to accurately identify the number of pure compounds present and to extract their pure spectra. In this study, the powerful chemometric method, multivariate curve resolution-alternating least squares (MCR-ALS), is applied to identify different paramagnetic centers. This method is used to simultaneously extract, with no prior knowledge, the pure spectra and the corresponding concentration profiles of all the compounds in the unknown and unresolved mixtures. The goal of our work is to apply, for the first time, this new chemometrics methodology, MCR-ALS, on EPR spectroscopic data in order to characterize a series of distinct but strongly overlapping spectra of various paramagnetic species.

Wire, mesh, and fiber electrodes for paper-based electroanalytical devices

Here, we report the use of microwire and mesh working electrodes in paper analytical devices fabricated by origami paper folding (oPADs). The important new result is that Au wires and carbon fibers having diameters ranging from micrometers to tens of micrometers can be incorporated into oPADs and that their electrochemical characteristics are consistent with the results of finite element simulations. These electrodes are fully compatible with both hollow channels and paper channels filled with cellulose fibers, and they are easier to incorporate than typical screen-printed carbon electrodes. The results also demonstrate that the Au electrodes can be cleaned prior to device fabrication using aggressive treatments and that they can be easily surface modified using standard thiol-based chemistry.
