Abstract
Surface water pollution is a critical and urgent global issue that demands immediate attention. Surface water plays a crucial role in supporting and sustaining life on the earth, but unfortunately, till now, we have less understanding of its spatial and temporal dynamics of discharge and storage variations at a global level. The contamination of surface water arises from various sources, classified into point and non-point sources. Point sources are specific, identifiable origins of pollution that release pollutants directly into water bodies through pipes or channels, allowing for easier identification and management, e.g., industrial discharges, sewage treatment plants, and landfills. However, non-point sources originate from widespread activities across expansive areas and present challenges due to its diffuse nature and multiple pathways of contamination, e.g., agricultural runoff, urban storm water runoff, and atmospheric deposition. Excessive accumulation of heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, pesticides, chlorination by-products, pharmaceutical products in surface water through different pathways threatens food quality and safety. As a result, there is an urgent need for developing and designing new tools for identifying and quantifying various environmental contaminants. In this context, chemical and biological sensors emerge as fascinating devices well-suited for various environmental applications. Numerous chemical and biological sensors, encompassing electrochemical, magnetic, microfluidic, and biosensors, have recently been invented by hydrological scientists for the detection of water pollutants. Furthermore, surface water contaminants are monitored through different sensors, proving their harmful effects on human health.

Abstract
With the global escalation of concerns surrounding prostate cancer (PCa) diagnosis, reliance on the serologic prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test remains the primary approach. However, the imperative for early PCa diagnosis necessitates more effective, accurate, and rapid diagnostic point-of-care (POC) devices to enhance the result reliability and minimize disease-related complications. Among POC approaches, electrochemical biosensors, known for their amenability and miniaturization capabilities, have emerged as promising candidates. In this study, we developed an impedimetric sensing platform to detect urinary zinc (UZn) in both artificial and clinical urine samples. Our approach lies in integrating label-free impedimetric sensing and the introduction of porosity through surface modification techniques. Leveraging a cellulose acetate/reduced graphene oxide composite, our sensor's recognition layer is engineered to exhibit enhanced porosity, critical for improving the sensitivity, capture, and interaction with UZn. The sensitivity is further amplified by incorporating zincon as an external dopant, establishing highly effective recognition sites. Our sensor demonstrates a limit of detection of 7.33 ng/mL in the 0.1-1000 ng/mL dynamic range, which aligns with the reference benchmark samples from clinical biochemistry. Our sensor results are comparable with the results of inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) where a notable correlation of 0.991 is achieved. To validate our sensor in a real-life scenario, tests were performed on human urine samples from patients being investigated for prostate cancer. Testing clinical urine samples using our sensing platform and ICP-MS produced highly comparable results. A linear correlation with R2 = 0.964 with no significant difference between two groups (p-value = 0.936) was found, thus confirming the reliability of our sensing platform.

Abstract
Recently, the abnormal level of zinc emerged as a powerful indicator or risk factor for metabolic, endocrine, neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases, including cancer. Electrochemical detection has been explored to quantify zinc in a precise, rapid, and non-expensive way; however, most of the current electrochemical systems lack in specificity. In this work we studied a highly selective and sensitive electrochemical method to detect quickly and reliably free zinc ions (Zn2+). The surface of the working electrode was modified with zincon electropolymerized on carbon nanotube (CNT) to enable the binding of zinc in complex body fluids. After being physicochemically characterized, the performances of the zincon-CNT complex was electrochemically assessed. Square Wave Voltammetry (SWV) was used to determine the calibration curve and the linear range of zinc quantification in artificial saliva and urine. This zincon- CNT system could specifically quantify mobile Zn2+ in salivary and urinary matrices with a sensitivity of ~100 ng·mL-1 and a limit of detection (LOD) of ~20 ng·mL-1. Zincon-modified CNT presented as a desirable candidate for the detection and quantification of free zinc in easily body fluids that potentially can become a diagnostic non-invasive testing platform.

Abstract
Due to the large quantities of pesticides extensively used and their impact on the environment and human health, a prompt and reliable sensing technique could constitute an excellent tool for in-situ monitoring. With this aim, we have applied a highly sensitive photonic biosensor based on a bimodal waveguide interferometer (BiMW) for the rapid, label-free, and specific quantification of fenitrothion (FN) directly in tap water samples. After an optimization protocol, the biosensor achieved a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.29 ng mL-1 (1.05 nM) and a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 1.71 ng mL-1 (6.09 nM) using a competitive immunoassay and employing diluted tap water. Moreover, the biosensor was successfully employed to determine FN concentration in blind tap water samples obtaining excellent recovery percentages with a time-to-result of only 20 min without any sample pre-treatment. The features of the biosensor suggest its potential application for real time, fast and sensitive screening of FN in water samples as an analytical tool for the monitoring of the water quality.

Abstract
With increasing industrialization of food production, residues of organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are more frequently found in the environment including rivers, lakes and soils. Extended exposure to OPs, even at a level below 1 nM, may lead to liver and central nervous system damages in humans and animals, while existing detection methods are not sensitive enough to detect OPs at trace levels. We presented a simple-to-use aptasensor to rapidly detect broad-spectrum OPs with high sensitivity. DNA aptamer was modified on the surface of a micro interdigitated electrode chip, and AC electrokinetics was employed to accelerate the binding of OP molecules to the aptamer probe. The sensing strategy directly measured the interfacial capacitance whose change rate was adopted as a quantitative indicator of recognition events, with a sample to result detection time of 30 s. This aptasensor had a wide linear range of (fM ~ nM), and the detection limit reached (0.24-1.67) fM for four highly-toxic OPs, with good specificity. It still showed good activity after being stored in non-refrigerated environment for at least 14 days. This aptasensor as well as the detection method offer a promising solution for on-site and real-time sensitive OP detection.

Abstract
Organophosphorus pesticides (OPs) are widely used in agricultural fields, but exhibit high toxicity to human beings. A sensitive fluorescence assay for organophosphorus pesticides was developed using the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity and the copper-catalyzed click chemical reaction. In the click reaction, two hybridized DNA probes can be ligated with copper ions, inducing a fluorescence quenching during the strand displacement reaction. AChE can hydrolyze acetylthiocholine (ATCh) to form thiocholine (TCh) which contains a thiol group. TCh will react with copper ions, blocking the click reaction and a high fluorescence signal is observed. But in the presence of OPs, the activity of AChE is inhibited, releasing a high concentration of copper ions that catalyze the click chemical reaction and resulting in decreased fluorescence signals. Taking advantage of the copper-mediated signal amplification effect, the sensitivity was improved. This assay has also been applied to detect OPs in river water samples with satisfactory results, which demonstrates that the method has great potential for practical applications in environmental protection and food safety fields.
