Electro‐photovoltaics of Polymer‐stabilized Copper–Indium Selenide Quantum Dot

Organic Heterostructures with Dendrimer Based Mixed Layer for Electronic Applications

Recently, much research has focused on the search for new mixed donor-acceptor layers for applications in organic electronics. Organic heterostructures with layers based on the generation 1 poly(propylene thiophenoimine) (G1PPT) dendrimer, N,N'-diisopropylnaphthalene diimide (MNDI), and a combination of the two were prepared and their electrical properties were investigated. Single layers of G1PPT and MNDI and a mixed layer (G1PPT:MNDI) were obtained via spin coating on quartz glass, silicon, and glass/ITO substrates, using chloroform as a solvent. The absorption mechanism was investigated, the degree of disorder was estimated, and the emission properties of the layers were highlighted using spectroscopic methods (UV-Vis transmission and photoluminescence). The effects of the concentration and surface topographical particularities on the properties of the layers were analyzed via atomic force microscopy. All of the heterostructures realized with ITO and Au electrodes showed good conduction, with currents of the order of mA. Additionally, the heterostructure with a mixed layer exhibited asymmetry in the current-voltage curve between forward and reverse polarization in the lower range of the applied voltages, which was more significant at increased concentrations and could be correlated with rectifier diode behavior. Consequently, the mixed-layer generation 1 poly(propylene thiophenoimine) dendrimer with N,N'-diisopropylnaphthalene diimide can be considered promising for electronic applications.

Effect of transparent substrate on properties of CuInSe2 thin films prepared by chemical spray pyrolysis

In this paper, the properties of CuInSe2 (CISe) films deposited on three transparent substrates (FTO, FTO/NiOx, FTO/MoO3) are studied. These substrates might be used for bifacial solar cells, in place of the conventional glass/Mo substrates. CISe layers are deposited by spray pyrolysis followed by a selenization process. For the same deposition conditions, the CISe layers on FTO show the largest grain size (~ 0.50 µm) and crystallinity, while FTO/MoO3 substrates result in the smallest grains (~ 0.15 µm). The optical bandgap of the CISe films ranged from 1.35 eV for FTO substrate to 1.44 eV for FTO/MoO3 substrate. All films show p-type conductivity, with the carrier densities of 1.6 × 1017 cm-3, 5.4 × 1017 cm-3, and 2.4 × 1019 cm-3 for FTO, FTO/NiOx, and FTO/MoO3 substrates, respectively. The CISe films also show different conduction, and valence levels, based on the substrate. In all cases, an ohmic behavior is observed between the CISe and substrate. The results demonstrate that CISe layer crystallinity, carrier concentration, mobility, and energy levels are strongly dependent on the chemical nature of the substrate. Bare FTO shows the most appropriate performance in terms of device requirements.

Electroconductive Polyaniline–Ag-ZnO Green Nanocomposite Material

Metal-conducting polyaniline (PANI)-based nanocomposite materials have attracted attention in various applications due to their synergism of electrical, mechanical, and optical properties of the initial components. Herein, metal-PANI nanocomposites, including silver nanoparticle-polyaniline (AgNP-PANI), zinc oxide nanoparticle-polyaniline (ZnONP-PANI), and silver-zinc oxide nanoparticle-polyaniline (Ag–ZnONP-PANI), were prepared using the two processes. Nanocomposite-based electrode platforms were prepared by depositing AgNPs, ZnONPs, or Ag–ZnONPs on a PANI modified glass carbon electrode (GCE) in the presence of 1-ethyl-3-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl) carbodiimide/N-Hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS, 1:2) as coupling agents. The incorporation of AgNPs, ZnONPs, and Ag–ZnONPs onto PANI was confirmed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, which showed five absorbance bands at 216 nm, 412 nm, 464 nm, 550 nm, and 831 nm (i.e., transition of π-π*, π-polaron band transition, polaron-π* electronic transition, and AgNPs). The FTIR characteristic signatures of the nanocomposite materials exhibited stretching arising from C–H aromatic, C–O, and C–N stretching mode for benzenoid rings, and =C–H plane bending vibration formed during protonation. The CV voltammograms of the nanocomposite materials showed a quasi-reversible behavior with increased redox current response. Notably, AgNP–PANI–GCE electrode showed the highest conductivity, which was attributed the high conductivity of silver. The increase in peak currents exhibited by the composites shows that AgNPs and ZnONPs improve the electrical properties of PANI, and they could be potential candidates for electrochemical applications.

Biocompatible Osmium Telluride-Polypyrrole Nanocomposite Material: Application in Prostate Specific Antigen Immunosensing

Prostate cancer is a dominant global threat to society. It affects nearly 4000 men in South Africa annually, making it the second most threatening cancerous disease after lung cancer. A potential serological biomarker to monitor early diagnosis of prostate cancer is prostate specific antigen (PSA). We used the PSA biomarker in our work to develop an extremely sensitive electrochemical immunosensor to achieve low detection limits. The fabrication steps followed with the combination of thioglycolic acid capped osmium telluride quantum dots (TGA-OsTe2QD)-polypyrrole (PPy) nanocomposite and prostate specific antigen modified on a glassy carbon electrode. The UV-Vis signatures of TGA-OsTe2QD-PPy showed an absorption band at 262 nm which is attributed to the PPy and TGA-OsTe2QD composite. This band corresponds to the energy band gap of 4.4 and 5.4 eV. The CV responses of BSA|Ab|TGA-OsTe2QD|PPy|GCE modified electrode to prostate specific antigen (PSA) was studied within a range of 0–16 ng/mL PSA that was linear, herein referred to as liner range (LR), which produced a limit of detection (LOD) value of 0.36 ng/mL PSA. The values of the immunosensor’s calibration parameters (LR and LOD) make them suitable for real sample application, due to their coverage of the PSA concentration range (0–14 ng/mL) that is of clinical importance.
