Abstract
In this work, an efficient and sensitive electrochemical sensor for the determination of ciprofloxacin (CIP) is reported. The sensor was prepared by using a carbon paste electrode (CPE) modified with a combination of bimetallic copper/cerium-based metal organic framework (Cu/Ce-MOF) and nickel doped zinc oxide nanoparticles (NZP). The modifiers were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) analysis, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and elemental mapping analysis (EDS). The electrochemical behavior of the modified electrode was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The developed electrode was employed for the detection of CIP by differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). Under optimal conditions, the anodic peak current response of the electrode was linearly correlated with CIP concentration in the range of 0.75-100 μmol L-1 with a sensitivity of 1.29 μA μmol-1 L-1. The limit of detection and reproducibility of the method were 0.142 μmol L-1 and 2.7%, respectively. The developed sensor showed good selectivity to CIP against possible interferents. The method was applied to determine CIP in water, milk and urine samples. The results indicated that this method has potential to be applied in the analysis of residue CIP in complex matrices with high selectivity, and good reproducibility.

Abstract
Toxic effluents containing azo dyes are discharged from various industries and they adversely affect water resoures, soil, aquatic ecosystems. Also, excessive use of food azo dyes can be carcinogenic, toxic, and adversely affect human health. Therefore, the determination of food azo dyes is significant from the perspective of human health and aquatic organisms. In the present work, nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide nanosheets were prepared and analyzed by various techniques (field emission-scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and fourier Transform-Infrared spectroscopy). Then, the screen printed graphite electrode modified with nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide nanosheets was used for the detection of carmoisine. The nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide nanosheets/screen printed graphite electrode significantly improved the oxidation of carmoisine by increasing the response current and lowering potentials compared to unmodified screen printed graphite electrode. Based on the findings from differential pulse voltammetry, the nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide nanosheets/screen printed graphite electrode sensor response towards carmoisine was linear (0.3-125.0 μM) with a detection limit of 0.09 μM. A sensitivity of 0.3088 μA μM-1 was achieved. Also, the nickel-cobalt layered double hydroxide nanosheets/screen printed graphite electrode was used for voltammetric detection of carmoisine in the presence of tartrazine. Due to the catalytic activity of prepared layered double hydroxide, the prepared sensor exhibited remarkable separation of the peaks when carmoisine and tartrazine coexist. In addition, the prepared sensor showed good stability. Finally, the proposed sensor had promising applicability for analysis of study analytes in powdered juice and lemon juice, with commendable recoveries between 97.3% and 104.8%.

Abstract
The emergence of bacteria genetically resistant to first- and second-generation fluoroquinolones has resulted in increased consumption of levofloxacin (LEV) in human and veterinary medicine. In this regard, the development of low cost and good sensitivity electrochemical devices has been highly required. Thus, in this work, we propose the development of a disposable electrochemical device (DED) using a lab-made conductive ink based on graphite powder and nail polish immobilized on a rigid polyvinyl chloride support (transparent sheet). Additionally, a simple and quick protocol for the electrodeposition of silver nanoparticles was used in order to improve the electroanalytical performance of the sensor (2.75-fold). A differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) method was optimized and the sensor was applied for LEV monitoring in pharmaceutical formulation samples, synthetic urine and simulated body fluid. The method showed a wide linear working range ranging from 0.5 to 50 μmol L-1 and a detection limit of 68.3 nmol L-1. Furthermore, the precision was adequate (RSD < 4.7%), while the accuracy was evaluated through spiked samples with percent recovery ranging from 93 to 103%. The sensor was also shown to be selective for LEV against other electroactive antibiotic species, thus demonstrating suitable characteristics for electroanalytical applications.

Abstract
This work describes the sensitive voltammetric determination of favipiravir (FAV) based on its reduction for the first time with a low-cost and disposable pencil graphite electrode (PGE). In addition, the determination of FAV was also performed based on its oxidation. Differential pulse (DP) voltammograms recorded in 0.5 M H2SO4 for the reduction of FAV show that peak currents increase linearly in the range of 1.0 to 600.0 μM with a limit of detection of 0.35 μM. The acceptable recovery values (98.9-106.0 %) obtained from a pharmaceutical tablet, real human urine, and artificial blood serum samples spiked with FAV confirm the high accuracy of the proposed method.

Abstract
The present paper reports a simple, fast, and inexpensive process of manufacturing a disposable pencil graphite electrode (PGE) from widely available materials, which showed a reproducibility of at least 7.5%. The electrode was compared to the commercial glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and showed superior electroanalytical performance for sulfanilamide (SFA) with approximately 3.9-fold higher current density. Additionally, a displacement of the oxidation peak from approximately 80 mV to more cathodic regions was observed. Therefore, a method based on square wave voltammetry (SWV) was developed for the determination of the antimicrobial SFA in honey and tap water samples using the proposed sensor. The optimized method presented good detectability (LOD = 2.37 μmol L-1), with excellent precision and accuracy (relative standard deviation < 4.2%) and percent recovery from spiked samples ranging from 92 to 97%. In addition, the sensor did not suffer significant interference from sample matrix components and other commonly evaluated antimicrobials, which demonstrates the potential of these electrodes for implementation in routine analysis and quality control.

Abstract
In the last few decades, pharmaceuticals, credited with saving millions of lives, have emerged as a new class of environmental contaminants. These compounds can have both chronic and acute harmful effects on aquatic ecosystems and consequently on human health. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the development of extremely sensitive, portable, and low-cost devices to perform analysis. In the present review article, recent reports on the application of various voltammetric and photo-electrochemical techniques using different electrode materials for the determination of antibiotic Ciprofloxacin (CIPRO) are reported. This review provides an insight into direct and indirect electrochemical approaches as well as the photoelectrochemical methods used for the determination of CIPRO. Emphasis is put on the applications of unmodified and modified carbon-based electrodes considering the modifier, supporting electrolytes, analytical method, concentration range, limit of detection, and real matrices. Carbon-based electrodes are the most used materials attributed to their commercial availability, reduced cost, high chemical stability, and non-toxicity.

Abstract
The even growing production of both well-known and new derivatives with pharmaceutical action involves the need for developing facile and reliable methods for the analysis of these compounds. Among the widely used instrumental techniques, the electrochemical ones are probably the simplest and the most rapid, also having good performance characteristics. However, the key tool in electroanalysis is the working electrode. Due to the inherent electrochemical and economic advantages of the pencil graphite electrode (PGE), the interest in its applicability in the analysis of different analytes has continuously increased in recent years. Thus, this paper aims to review the scientific reports published in the last 10 years on the use of the disposable eco- and user-friendly PGEs in the electroanalysis of compounds of pharmaceutical importance in different matrices. The PGE characteristics and designs (bare or modified with various types of materials), along with their applications and performance parameters (e.g., linear range, limit of detection, and reproducibility), will be discussed, and their advantages and limitations will be critically emphasized.

Abstract
An ultra-sensitive sensor of dopamine is introduced. The sensor is constructed by encapsulating platinum nanoparticles (PtNPs) between reduced graphene oxide (GR) nanosheets. The sandwiched PtNPs between GR layers acted as a spacer to prevent aggregation and provided a fine connection between the GR nanosheets to provide fast charge transfer. This specific orientation of the GR nanosheets and PtNPs on the graphite pencil electrode (GPE) substantially improved the electrocatalytic activity of the sensor. The synthesized graphene oxide and the fabricated sensor were comprehensively characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, field emission-scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and square wave voltammetry (SWV). The value of the charge transfer coefficient (α), apparent heterogeneous electron transfer rate constant (ks), and electroactive surface area for dopamine were found to be about 0.57, 8.99 s−1, and 0.81 cm2, respectively. The developed sensor is highly sensitive towards dopamine, and the detection limit is 9.0 nM. The sensor response is linear for dopamine concentration from 0.06 to 20 μM (R2 = 0.9991). The behavior of the sensor for dopamine in the presence of a high concentration of l(+) Ascorbic acid and other potential interferents was satisfactory. High recovery percentage between 90% and 105% in the human urine sample, good reproducibility, and facile fabrication of the electrode make it a good candidate for dopamine sensing. Abstract
In this paper, the electrochemical response of chloramphenicol (CHL) was investigated on a bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE) and after modification with reduced graphene oxide (GCE/rGO). Preliminary studies by cyclic voltammetry demonstrated an adsorption-controlled mass transport regime of CHL species and a pH-dependent behavior on both electrode surfaces. An adsorptive stripping differential pulse voltammetry (AdSDPV) method was proposed and under optimized instrumental conditions, a comparison of the analytical characteristics of both sensors was performed. The GCE/rGO sensor showed an increase in sensitivity (10-fold), and an anticipation of the reduction potential (200 mV), compared to the bare electrode, due to the adsorptive character (pre-concentration of the CHL species) and the electrocatalytic effect of the nanomaterial. The method was applied to skimmed and whole milk samples, which were simply diluted (50-fold) in supporting electrolyte. The results by AdSDPV using GCE/rGO showed adequate detectability (0.22 μmol L-1), good precision with a 6% relative standard deviation (RSD) and satisfactory recovery ranging from 93 to 108%. The obtained results were statistically similar (95% confidence level) with those performed through ultra-fast liquid chromatography (UFLC). Furthermore, the sensor showed an improvement in the analytical performance for CHL detection, when compared to other sensors reported in the literature. Therefore, the developed method is reliable and promising for implementation in monitoring CHL residues in milk samples.

Abstract
Hesperidin (HESP) is a plant bioflavonoid found in various nutritional and medicinal products. Many of its multiple health benefits rely on the compound’s antioxidant ability, which is due to the presence of oxidizable hydroxyl groups in its structure. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the electrochemical behavior of HESP at a cheap, disposable pencil graphite electrode (PGE) in order to develop rapid and simple voltammetric methods for its quantification. Cyclic voltammetric investigations emphasized a complex electrochemical behavior of HESP. The influence of the electrode material, solution stability, supporting electrolyte pH, and nature were examined. HESP main irreversible, diffusion-controlled oxidation signal obtained at H type PGE in Britton Robinson buffer pH 1.81 was exploited for the development of a differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) quantitative analysis method. The quasi-reversible, adsorption-controlled reduction peak was used for HESP quantification by differential pulse adsorptive stripping voltammetry (DPAdSV). The linear ranges of DPV and DPAdSV were 1.00 × 10−7–1.20 × 10−5 and 5.00 × 10−8–1.00 × 10−6 mol/L with detection limits of 8.58 × 10−8 and 1.90 × 10−8 mol/L HESP, respectively. The DPV method was applied for the assessment of dietary supplements bioflavonoid content, expressed as mg HESP.

Abstract
Several antibiotics have been applied to veterinary medicine due to their broad-spectrum of antibacterial activity and prophylactic power. Residues of these antibiotics can be accumulated in dairy cattle, in addition to promoting contamination of the environment and, in more serious cases, in milk, causing a public health problem. Different regulatory agencies establish maximum residue limits for these antibiotics in milk, so it becomes important to develop sensitive analytical methods for monitoring these compounds. Electrochemical techniques are important analytical tools in analytical chemistry because they present low cost, simplicity, high sensitivity, and adequate analytical frequency (sample throughput) for routine analyses. In this sense, this review summarizes the state of the art of the main electrochemical sensors and biosensors, instrumental techniques, and sample preparation used for the development of analytical methods, published in the last five years, for the monitoring of different classes of antibiotics: aminoglycosides, amphenicols, beta-lactams, fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines, in milk samples. The different strategies to develop electrochemical sensors and biosensors are critically compared considering their analytical features. The mechanisms of electrochemical oxidation/reduction of the antibiotics are revised and discussed considering strategies to improve the selectivity of the method. In addition, current challenges and future prospects are discussed.

Batch injection analysis with amperometric detection for fluoroquinolone determination in urine, pharmaceutical formulations, and milk samples using a reduced graphene oxide-modified glassy carbon electrode. Anal Bioanal Chem 2021; 414:5309-5318. [PMID: 33890118 DOI: 10.1007/s00216-021-03342-3] [Citation(s) in RCA: 3] [Impact Index Per Article: 1.0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 03/11/2021] [Revised: 04/08/2021] [Accepted: 04/12/2021] [Indexed: 10/21/2022]
Abstract
In this work, the batch injection analysis system with amperometric detection using reduced graphene oxide as a modifier of glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was investigated for the simple, fast, and sensitive monitoring of levofloxacin (LEVO) and ciprofloxacin (CIPRO) in samples of pharmaceutical formulations, synthetic urine, and milk (low- and high-fat content). LEVO and CIPRO were quantified in seven samples using amperometric measurements at +1.10 V vs Ag/AgCl, KCl(sat). The developed methods showed excellent analytical performance with limits of detection of 0.30 and 0.16 μmol L-1, linear range from 3.0 to 50 μmol L-1 and 1.0 to 50 μmol L-1, relative standard deviation below 9.7 and 3.1%, and recovery ranges ranging from 80 to 107% and from 78 to 109% for LEVO and CIPRO, respectively. In addition, the minimum sample preparation (simple dilution) combined with a high analytical frequency (130 to 180 analyses per hour) can be highlighted. Thus, the methods are promising for implementation in routine analysis and quality control to different samples.
