Abstract
In 2022, there were around 20 million new cases and over 9.7 million cancer-related deaths worldwide. An increasing number of metabolites with anticancer activity in algae had been isolated and identified, which were promising candidates for cancer therapy. Red algae are well-known for the production of brominated metabolites, including terpenoids and phenols, which have the capacity to induce cell toxicity. Some non-toxic biological macromolecules, including polysaccharides, are distinct secondary metabolites found in many algae, particularly green algae. They possess anticancer activities by inhibiting tumor angiogenesis, stimulating the immune response, and inducing apoptosis. However, the structure-activity relationship between these components and antitumor activity, as well as certain taxa within the algae, remains relatively unstudied. This work is based on the reports published from 2003 to 2024 in PubMed and ISI Web of Science databases. A comprehensive review of the characterized algal anticancer active compounds, together with their structure and mechanism of action was performed. Also, their structure-activity relationship was preliminarily summarized to better assess their potential properties as a natural, safe bioactive product to be used as an alternative for the treatment of cancers, leading to new opportunities for drug discovery.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the dynamic changes in the physicochemical properties of Laiyang pear residue polysaccharide (LPP) during in vitro digestion, as well as its protective effect on the intestines. Monosaccharide composition and molecular weight analysis showed that there was no significant change in LPP during the oral digestion stage. However, during the gastric and intestinal digestion stages, the glycosidic bonds of LPP were broken, leading to the dissociation of large molecular aggregates and a significant increase in reducing sugar content (CR) accompanied by a decrease in molecular weight. In addition, LPP exerted the intestinal protective ability via inhibiting gut inflammation, improving intestinal barrier, and regulating intestinal flora in DSS-induced mice. Specifically, LPP mitigated DSS-induced intestinal pathological damage of mice via enhancing intestinal barrier integrity and upregulating expressions of TJ proteins, and suppressed inflammation by inhibiting NF-κB signaling axis. Furthermore, LPP decreased the ratio of Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes, increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillus, and altered the diversity and the composition of gut microbiota in DSS-induced mice. Therefore, LPP had the potential to be a functional food that improved gut microbiota environment to enhance health and prevent diseases, such as a prebiotic.

Abstract
Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) represent a global health challenge, constituting a major cause of mortality and disease burden in the 21st century. Addressing the prevention and management of NCDs is crucial for improving global public health, emphasizing the need for comprehensive strategies, early interventions, and innovative therapeutic approaches to mitigate their far-reaching consequences. Marine organisms, mainly algae, produce diverse marine natural products with significant therapeutic potential. Harnessing the largely untapped potential of algae could revolutionize drug development and contribute to combating NCDs, marking a crucial step toward natural and targeted therapeutic approaches. This review examines bioactive extracts, compounds, and commercial products derived from macro- and microalgae, exploring their protective properties against oxidative stress, inflammation, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, metabolic diseases, and cancer across in vitro, cell-based, in vivo, and clinical studies. Most research focuses on macroalgae, demonstrating antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, gut health modulation, metabolic health promotion, and anti-cancer effects. Microalgae products also exhibit anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, and anti-cancer properties. Although studies mainly investigated extracts and fractions, isolated compounds from algae have also been explored. Notably, polysaccharides, phlorotannins, carotenoids, and terpenes emerge as prominent compounds, collectively representing 42.4% of the investigated compounds.

Abstract
Seaweeds are photosynthetic marine macroalgae known for their rapid biomass growth and their significant contributions to global food and feed production. Seaweeds play a crucial role in mitigating various environmental issues, including greenhouse gases, ocean acidification, hypoxia, and eutrophication. Tropical seaweeds are typically found in tropical and subtropical coastal zones with warmer water temperatures and abundant sunlight. These tropical seaweeds are rich sources of proteins, vitamins, minerals, fibers, polysaccharides, and bioactive compounds, contributing to their health-promoting properties and their diverse applications across a range of industries. The productivity, cultivability, nutritional quality, and edibility of tropical seaweeds have been well-documented. This review article begins with an introduction to the growth conditions of selected tropical seaweeds. Subsequently, the multifunctional properties of tropical seaweeds including antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, anti-coagulant, anti-carcinogenic and anti-proliferative, anti-viral, therapeutic and preventive properties were comprehensively evaluated. The potential application of tropical seaweeds as functional foods and feeds, as well as their contributions to sustainable cosmetics, bioenergy, and biofertilizer production were also highlighted. This review serves as a valuable resource for researchers involved in seaweed farming as it provides current knowledge and insights into the cultivation and utilization of seaweeds.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Ulva lactuca polysaccharide (ULP) is green algae extract with numerous biological activities, including anticoagulant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral effects. However, the inhibitory ability of ULP in the development of hepatocellular carcinoma warrants further studies. OBJECTIVES To elucidate the anti-tumor mechanism of ULP action and evaluate its regulatory effect on gut microbiota and metabolism in H22 hepatocellular carcinoma tumor-bearing mice. METHODS An H22 tumor-bearing mouse model was established by subcutaneously injecting H22 hepatoma cells. The gut microbiota composition in cecal feces was assessed and subjected to untargeted metabolomic sequencing. The antitumor activity of ULP was verified further by western blot, RT-qPCR, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) assays. RESULTS Administration of ULP alleviated tumor growth by modulating the compositions of the gut microbial communities (Tenericutes, Agathobacter, Ruminiclostridium, Parabacteroides, Lactobacillus, and Holdemania) and metabolites (docosahexaenoic acid, uric acid, N-Oleoyl Dopamine, and L-Kynurenine). Mechanistically, ULP promoted ROS production by inhibiting the protein levels of JNK, c-JUN, PI3K, Akt, and Bcl-6, thereby delaying the growth of HepG2 cells. CONCLUSION ULP attenuates tumor growth in H22 tumor-bearing mice by modulating gut microbial composition and metabolism. ULP inhibits tumor growth mainly by promoting ROS generation.

Abstract
In this study, Ulva lactuca polysaccharide (ULP) antihyperglycemic effect was assessed by monitoring changes in the gut microbiota of aging diabetic mice. The results showed that ULP alleviated type 2 diabetes by improving insulin tolerance, increasing SOD and CAT activities, and thus lowering blood glucose level. Moreover, ULP regulated the expressions of INSR and AMPK concurrent with inhibition the expression of JNK, JAK, STAT3, p16 and p38 to improve glucose metabolism dysfunction. Interestingly, the abundance of Alloprevotella and Pediococcus change might the key factor for ULP antihyperglycemic effectiveness in aging-related diabetes. These results suggest that ULP can exert a mechanism of blood glucose regulation by improving intestinal diversity composition asides from direct insulin mimetic actions.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third leading cause of cancer death worldwide. Ginsenoside Rk3, an important and rare saponin in heat-treated ginseng, is generated from Rg1 and has a smaller molecular weight. However, the anti-HCC efficacy and mechanisms of ginsenoside Rk3 have not yet been characterized. Here, we investigated the mechanism by which ginsenoside Rk3, a tetracyclic triterpenoid rare ginsenoside, inhibits the growth of HCC. We first explored the possible potential targets of Rk3 through network pharmacology. Both in vitro (HepG2 and HCC-LM3 cells) and in vivo (primary liver cancer mice and HCC-LM3 subcutaneous tumor-bearing mice) studies revealed that Rk3 significantly inhibits the proliferation of HCC. Meanwhile, Rk3 blocked the cell cycle in HCC at the G1 phase and induced autophagy and apoptosis in HCC. Further proteomics and siRNA experiments showed that Rk3 regulates the phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/protein kinase B (AKT) pathway to inhibit HCC growth, which was validated by molecular docking and surface plasmon resonance. In conclusion, we report the discovery that ginsenoside Rk3 binds to PI3K/AKT and promotes autophagy and apoptosis in HCC. Our data strongly support the translation of ginsenoside Rk3 into novel PI3K/AKT-targeting therapeutics for HCC treatment with low toxic side effects.

Abstract
Ulvans are water-soluble sulfated polysaccharides predominantly found in the cell wall of green algae. They hold unique characteristics that are attributed to their 3D conformation, functional groups along with the presence of saccharides and sulfate ions. Traditionally, ulvans are widely used as food supplements and probiotics owing to the high content of carbohydrates. Despite their widespread usage in food industry, an in-depth understanding is required for extrapolating their potential application as a nutraceutical and medicinal agent which could be beneficial in promoting human health and well-being. This review emphasizes novel therapeutic avenues where ulvan polysaccharides can be used beyond their nutritional applications. A collection of literature points towards multifarious applications of ulvan in various biomedical fields. Structural aspects along with extraction and purification methods have been discussed. The underlying molecular mechanisms associated with its biomedical potential in different therapeutic fields like oncology, infectious diseases, inflammation, neuroprotection and tissue engineering, etc. have been unravelled. Challenges associated with clinical translation and future perspectives have been deliberated.

Abstract
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the most common type of liver malignancy and remains a global health threat. The objective of the current study was to determine whether the combination of a cold-water extracted polysaccharide-protein complex from Grifolia frondosa (GFG) and cyclophosphamide (CTX) could inhibit tumor growth by suppressing the expression of angiogenesis-related proteins in H22 tumor-bearing mice. The results showed that the inhibition rate of GFG combined with CTX on H22 tumors was 65.29%, which was significantly higher than that of GFG treatment alone (24.82%). GFG combined with CTX significantly increased the expression levels of vascular endothelial growth factor, basic fibroblast growth factor, matrix metalloproteinase 2, and matrix metalloproteinase 9. Additionally, thymus index, spleen index, natural killer (NK) cell activity, interferon-γ (IFN-γ), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-2 (IL-2) levels increased significantly after GFG treatment, especially after high-doses of GFG combined with CTX treatment (p < 0.05). The thymus index, spleen index, NK cell activity, IFN-γ, IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-2 levels were 1.90, 1.46, 1.30, 2.13, 1.64, 2.03, and 1.24 times of those treated with CTX alone. Thus, we proposed that GFG can alleviate the side effects of CTX by relieving the immunosuppressive effect, liver/renal injury, and oxidative stress. In conclusion, the combination of GFG and CTX for cancer treatment may be a promising strategy, and GFG is expected to be a potential adjuvant alternative for the treatment of HCC.

Abstract
AbstractGreen seaweed, as the most abundant species of macroseaweeds, is an important marine biological resource. It is a rich source of several amino acids, fatty acids, and dietary fibers, as well as polysaccharides, polyphenols, pigments, and other active substances, which have crucial roles in various biological processes such as antioxidant activity, immunoregulation, and anti-inflammatory response. In recent years, attention to marine resources has accelerated the exploration and utilization of green seaweeds for greater economic value. This paper elaborates on the main nutrients and active substances present in different green seaweeds and provides a review of their biological activities and their applications for high-value utilization.

Abstract
Verbascum sinuatum (V. sinuatum) is a plant belonging to the Scrophulariaceae family that has been used as an ingredient in traditional medicine infusions for the treatment of many diseases. The aerial part of this plant is a source of bioactive compounds, especially polyphenols and iridoids. Moreover, antioxidant activity studies have shown that V. sinuatum phenolic and flavonoid composition is higher than those in other plants of the same genus. V. sinuatum bioactive compound composition could vary according to the harvesting location, growing conditions of the plants, sample preparation methods, type and concentration of the extraction solvent, and the extraction methods. The obtention of these compounds can be achieved by different extraction techniques, most commonly, maceration, heat assisted extraction, and infusion. Nevertheless, since conventional extraction techniques have several drawbacks such as long times of extraction or use of large amounts of solvents, the use of green extraction techniques is suggested, without affecting the efficiency of the extraction. Moreover, V. sinuatum bioactive compounds have several biological activities, such as antioxidant, anticancer, cardiovascular, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and neuroprotective activities, that may be increased by encapsulation. Since the bioactive compounds extracted from V. sinuatum present good potential as functional food ingredients and in the development of drugs or cosmetics, this review gives an approach of the possible incorporation of these compounds in the food and pharmacological industries.

Abstract
AbstractSeaweed has emerged as one of the most promising resources due to its remarkable adaptability, short development period, and resource sustainability. It is an effective breakthrough to alleviate future resource crises. Algal resources have reached a high stage of growth in the past years due to the increased output and demand for seaweed worldwide. Several aspects global seaweed farming production and processing over the last 20 years are reviewed, such as the latest situation and approaches of seaweed farming. Research progress and production trend of various seaweed application are discussed. Besides, the challenges faced by seaweed farming and processing are also analyzed, and the related countermeasures are proposed, which can provide advice for seaweed farming and processing. The primary products, extraction and application, or waste utilization of seaweed would bring greater benefits with the continuous development and improvement of applications in various fields.

Abstract
Heparinoid, a sulfate polysaccharide derived from marine organisms was attracted largely attention due to its versatile activities. A naturally occurring heparinoid (M2) that was extracted from the mollusk Meretrix lusoria and used in this investigation shown strong antithrombotic action. UV-Vis, FT-IR, SAX-HPLC, and NMR were used to explore the structural characteristics of M2, results indicated that M2 similar with heparin, its average molecular weight was 22.58 kDa. Which was primarily made up of→4)-α-IdoA2S-(1→4)-α-GlcNS6S-(1→ (31.19%), →4)-β-GlcA-(1→4)-α-GlcNAc (1→ (23.21%), →4)-β-GlcA-(1→4)-α-GlcNS (1→ (13.87%), →4)-α-IdoA2S-(1→4)-α-GlcNS (1→ (8.95%), →4)-β-GlcA-(1→4)-α-GlcNAc6S (1→ (7.39%) and →4)-β-GlcA-(1→4)-α-GlcNS6S (1→ (7.63%). The antithrombotic activity of M2 was evaluated using measurements of the anticoagulant effect in vitro and the fibrinolytic capability in vitro and in vivo, and M2 has 122.4 U/mg of anticoagulant activity and 1.41 U/mg of fibrinolytic activity, respectively. Additionally, a mouse tail-cutting model was used to assess the bleeding effect in real time, it found that M2 had a reduced hemorrhagic risk than heparin. Consequently, M2 could be exploited to develop functional foods or medications with antithrombotic properties.

Abstract
CCP showed significant immunomodulatory effects. CCP raising the level of NO, TNF-α, and IL-6 of macrophages RAW264.7. Investigation on the metabolites and genes changes in CCP-induced RAW264.7. Potential immunostimulatory mechanism of CCP on RAW264.7 was elucidated.
Investigation on Caulerpa chemnitzia polysaccharides led to the finding of a new polysaccharide (CCP). The basic components of CCP were the total sugar (59.18% ± 0.57%), the uronic acids (36.75% ± 0.28%) and the sulfate (42.50% ± 0.42%), in total content. The physicochemical analysis revealed that CCP was a heteropolysaccharide with a molecular weight of 321.6 KDa, and composed of arabinose, fucose, glucose, mannose, galactose, xylose, fructose, ribose, glucuronic acid and galacturonic acid. The immunomodulatory assay showed that CCP played an important role in activating cell viability, the nitric oxide product and cytokines (IL-6 and TNF-α) secretion. Furthermore, the transcript-metabolic analysis displayed a total of 7692 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and 95 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs), and revealed that CCP may play an immunomodulatory effect by activating NF-κB signaling pathway and arachidonic acid metabolism pathway. These findings will provide a basic understanding to further investigation of Caulerpa polysaccharides.

Abstract
Ageing-related type 2 diabetes is a significant public health problem. Particularly, the number of cases and fatality rates of ageing-associated diabetes increase with population ageing. This study aimed to investigate the structural characterisation of Ulva lactuca polysaccharide (ULP) and the hypoglycaemic effect on ageing-associated diabetic mice using gut microbiota variation. Sugar residuals analysis showed that the purified ULP (ULP-1) comprised β-D-Xylp-(1→3)-β-D-Arap-(1→6)-β-D-Galp-(1→6)-β-D-Glcp linked to [→α-L-Rhap-(1→4)-β-D-GlcpA→]n and α-D-Manp-(1→4)-α-L-Rhap(2SO3-)-(1→2)-α-L-Rhap(4SO3-)-(1→2)-α-L-Arap-(1→2)-α-L-Rhap-(1→ as its side chains at β-D-Glcp. Moreover, ULP modulated the expression levels of p16Ink4a, MMP2, FoxO1, GLP-1/GLP-1R, STAT3, and GLUT4 to improve the status of ageing and diabetes, which was concurrent with the increased abundance of Dubosiella, Enterococcus, Romboutsia, Bifidobacterium, Kurthia, Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1, Corynebacterium, Faecalibaculum, Aerococcus and Vibrio. Notably, Dubosiella, Romboutsia, Bifidobacterium, Turicibacter and Clostridium_sensu_stricto_1 could serve as important intermediates for delaying ageing and diabetes. Additionally, the ULP-1 structure is strongly binding interaction with the target protein through hydrogen bonding and Van der Waals force, especially for GLP-1 (-10.34 kcal/mol), p16Ink4a (-10.51 kcal/mol) and GLP-1R (-8.57 kcal/mol). Moreover, the average length of the hydrogen bond was observed to be 2.36 MPa, which is smaller than that of the traditional hydrogen bond. Therefore, ULP has the potential to function as a nutraceutical to delay or prevent the development of ageing-related type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
A water-soluble dietary fiber named BSDF-1 (polysaccharide) was isolated from the bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) shoot. BSDF-1was characterized as a backbone consisting predominately of 1,4-linked Glcp, and the protective effects and mechanisms of the anti-inflammatory activity were investigated using a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mouse model. BSDF-1 administration significantly reduced colonic pathological damage, inhibited the activation of inflammatory signaling pathways, including nuclear factor-kappa B and NLR family pyrin domain containing 3 inflammasomes pathways. It restored the mRNA expression of tight junction proteins, including zonula occludens-1, claudin-1, and occludin. Furthermore, BSDF-1 treatment reduced Parabacteroides, Mucispirillum, Helicobacter, Bacteroides, and Streptococcus levels, whereas high-dose BSDF-1 treatment increased Prevotella, Alitipes, Anaerostipes, Odoribacter, Bifidobacterium, Butyricimonas, and Lactobacillus levels. In conclusion, BSDF-1 can inhibit the activation of inflammatory signaling pathways and restore the intestinal barrier function. Thus, BSDF-1 may be a valuable food supplement or nutraceutical to manage and prevent ulcerative colitis.

Abstract
Polysaccharides are usually composed of more than ten monosaccharide units, which are connected by linear or branched glycosidic bonds. The immunomodulatory effect of natural polysaccharides is one of the most important bioactive function. In this review, molecular weight, monosaccharide (including galactose, mannose, rhamnogalacturonan-I arabinogalactan and uronic acid), functional groups (namely sulfate, selenium, and acetyl groups), types of glycoside bond connection (including β-1,3-D-glucosyl, α-1,4-D-glucosyl, β-1,4-D-glucosyl, α-1,6-D-glucosyl, β-1,4-D-mannosyl, and β-1,4-D-Xylopyranosyl), conformation and the branching degrees are systematically identified as their contribution to the immunostimulatory activity of polysaccharides. At present, studies on the structure-activity relationships of polysaccharides are limited due to their low purity and high heterogeneity. However, it is an important step in providing useful guidance for dietary supplements with polysaccharides. The chemical structures and the process of immune responses induced are necessary to be discussed. Polysaccharides may bind with the cell surface receptors to modulate immune responses. This review mainly discusses the structure-activity relationship of dietary polysaccharides. Structure - activity relationships of polysaccharides with immune-enhancing effect are proposed. Polysaccharides with the higher molecular weight are helpful to improve immunity. Higer galactose, mannose, rhamnogalacturonan-I, arabinogalacta,n and uronic acid contents have immunoregulation.

Abstract
The effect of non-starch polysaccharides on the structural and functional properties of native starch have been extensively studied. However, the effect of non-starch polysaccharides on the structural characteristics of debranched starch, a kind of enzymatic modified starch, remains unclear. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of Mesona chinensis polysaccharide (MP) on starch retrogradation and structural properties of debranched waxy corn starch (DWS). The results showed that only appropriate addition of MP (0.5 or 1%) can effectively promote the short-term retrogradation of DWS, while excessive MP (3 or 5%) had a negative effect. Gel hardness results revealed that the short-term retrogradation (24 h) of DWS could be divided into two phases. The retrogradation of DWS-MP gels mainly occurred at first stage (0–4 h), which was demonstrated by the rapid increase of gel hardness and relative crystallinity in this stage. In the second stage (4–24 h), DWS-MP gels were more likely to undergo the aggregation of starch granules as proved by SEM and particle size results. The degree of short-range ordered decreased during the total retrogradation stage. Overall, this work aims to provide an insight into the effect of non-starch polysaccharides on the short-term retrogradation of DWS. Only the appropriate addition of MP could accelerate the retrogradation of DWS. The short-term retrogradation of DWS could be divided into two stages. Gel hardness and relative crystallinity increased significantly in the first stage. The degree of short-range ordered reduced monotonically with retrogradation time. Starch particles mainly underwent aggregation in the second stage.

Abstract
Several theories for aging are constantly put forth to explain the underlying mechanisms. Oxidative stress, DNA dysfunction, inflammation, and mitochondrial dysfunction, along with the release of cytochrome c are some of these theories. Diseases such as type 2 diabetes mellitus, intestinal dysfunction, cardiovascular diseases, hepatic injury, and even cancer develop with age and eventually cause death. Ulva polysaccharides, owing to their special structures and various functions, have emerged as desirable materials for keeping healthy. These polysaccharide structures are found to be closely related to the extraction methods, seaweed strains, and culture conditions. Ulvan is a promising bioactive substance, a potential functional food, which can regulate immune cells to augment inflammation, control the activity of aging-related genes, promote tumor senescence, enhance mitochondrial function, maintain liver balance, and protect the gut microbiome from inflammatory attacks. Given the desirable physiochemical and gelling properties of ulvan, it would serve to improve the quality and shelf-life of food.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes (T2D) has emerged as one of the most acute public health diseases of the present time, which increases with the population ageing. This study aimed to evaluate the hypoglycaemic activity of Ulva lactuca oligosaccharide (ULO) under ageing-related diabetes conditions in an animal model. The results demonstrated that ULO can promote hypoglycaemia and delay senescence as mediated via GLP-1/GLP-1R pathway to mobilize the intercommunication between the brain and gut. In addition, twenty-six different metabolites and eight different bacteria were screened in the brain and the gut, respectively. A network relationship displayed that all-trans-retinoic acid has positive relationships with Bifidobacterium and Streptococcus, suggesting that plays a potential key role in maintaining the hypoglycaemic and anti-ageing activities of ULO. Based on these findings, ULO might be an efficient therapy for restoring blood glucose metabolism and delaying brain senescence in elderly T2D patients. U. lactuca oligosaccharide (ULO) acts as a GLP-1/GLP-1R agonist to control circulating glucose. ULO significantly reduces the expression of brain aging factor p16Ink4a. All-trans-Retinoic acid and Streptococcus are the key mediators of hypoglycemia.

Abstract
Rosa roxburghii Tratt fruit is a highly valued fruit that contains abundant functional and nutritional constituents. In this study, a novel polysaccharide, named RTFP-1, was isolated and purified from R. roxburghii Tratt fruit. Structural characterization indicated that RTFP-1 was a homogeneous heteropolysaccharide with the molecular weight (Mw) of 128.7 kDa and consisted of arabinose, galactose, glucose, mannose, xylose, and fucose with molar ratio percentages of 34.84, 40.59, 12.11, 5.06, 3.39, and 4.01%, respectively. A CCK-8 assay indicated that RTFP-1 inhibited the cell growth of HepG2 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Morphological analysis and flow cytometry experiment showed that RTFP-1 promoted the apoptosis of HepG2 cells and increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) level. The underlying molecular mechanisms indicated that RTFP-1 activated the apoptosis of HepG2 cells through ROS-mediated MAPK, STAT, and p53 apoptotic pathways. These results suggest that RTFP-1 might be a potential chemopreventive and antitumor agent. Rosa roxburghii Tratt fruit as source of natural bioactive polysaccharides. A heteropolysaccharide polysaccharide (RTFP-1) displayed potent antitumor activity. RTFP-1 included apoptosis of HepG2 cells by ROS-mediated MAPK, STAT, and p53 apoptotic pathways. RTFP-1 can be used as an exogenous antitumor agent.

Abstract
In order to increase their sustainability, antimicrobial renewable molecules are fundamental additions to consumer goods. Rosmarinic acid is extracted from several terrestrial plants and represents an effective anti-microbial agent. Ulvan, extracted from algae, is an anti-microbial polysaccharide. The present review is dedicated to discussing the sources and the extraction methodologies for obtaining rosmarinic acid and ulvan. Moreover, the preparation of bioanosystems, integrating the two molecules with organic or inorganic substrates, are reviewed as methodologies to increase their effectiveness and stability. Finally, the possibility of preparing functional biomaterials and anti-microbial final products is discussed, considering scientific literature. The performed analysis indicated that the production of both molecules is not yet performed with mature industrial technologies. Nevertheless, both molecules could potentially be used in the packaging, biomedical, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, sanitary and personal care sectors, despite some research being required for developing functional materials with specific properties to pave the way for many more applications.

Abstract
A novel polysaccharide from Ulva lactuca (ULP) was purified using a Sepharose CL-4B column. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, high-performance liquid chromatography, and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy were employed to analyze the structure of ULP. It consisted of rhamnose (Rha), glucuronic acid (GluA), galactose (Gal), and xylose (Xyl) at a molar ratio of 32.75:22.83:1.07:6.46 with the molecular weight of 2.24 × 105 Da. The four major glycosidic residues found in ULP were →2,3)-α-l-Rhap-(1→, →4)-β-d-GlcpA-(1→, →2,6)-β-d-Galp-(1→, and →4)-β-d-Xylp-(1→. The antihyperuricemic activity of ULP was exhibited by detecting related biochemical indexes, urate transporter gene expressions, renal histopathology, and intestinal microbiota shifts. ULP obviously decreased the levels of serum uric acid (UA), blood urea nitrogen, and creatinine, while inhibited serum and hepatic xanthine oxidase activities as well as improved renal injury in hyperuricemic mice. Furthermore, the upregulation of UA excretion genes ABCG2/OAT1 and downregulation of UA resorption genes URAT1 and GLUT9 were detected. In addition, ULP exerted its antihyperuricemic effect through regulating the intestinal microbiome, characterized by elevating the helpful microbial abundance, meanwhile declining the harmful bacterial abundance and restoring the gut microbiome homeostasis. This study demonstrates the antihyperuricemic activity of ULP and its potential effect for the treatment of hyperuricemia-related diseases.

Abstract
Cancer has been listed as one of the world's five incurable diseases by the World Health Organization and causes tens of thousands of deaths every year. Unfortunately, anticancer agents either show limited efficacy or show serious side effects. The algae possess high nutritional value and their polysaccharides have a variety of biological activities, especially anti-cancer and immunomodulatory properties. Algal polysaccharides exert anti-cancer effects by inducing apoptosis, cell cycle arrest, anti-angiogenesis, and regulating intestinal flora and immune function. Algal polysaccharides can be combined with nanoparticles and other drugs to reduce the side effects caused by chemotherapy and increase the anticancer effects. This review shows the signal pathways related to the anti-cancer mechanisms of algal polysaccharides, including their influence on intestinal flora and immune regulation, the application of nanoparticles, and the effects on combination therapy and clinical trials of cancer treatments.
