Abstract
The present study was to investigate the effect of the astaxanthin high internal phase Pickering emulsion (H-AXT) on DEHP-induced liver lipid metabolism disorder and to demonstrate its possible protective mechanism. We have developed an antioxidant activity emulsion system to deliver astaxanthin into the liver to maximize its ability to protect the liver. In vitro, H-AXT intervention inhibited oxidative stress restored the level of mitochondrial membrane potential to 90 % of that of normal LO2 cells, and alleviated the imbalance of energy metabolism by protecting mitochondrial structure and function. Based on metabonomics, it was proved that H-AXT inhibited triglyceride accumulation by antagonizing lipid metabolism disorder. In DEHP-induced mice, H-AXT intervention mitigated liver damage by inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammatory reaction, and alleviated metabolic dysfunction by regulating lipid levels and inhibiting fat accumulation. Meanwhile, H-AXT alleviated DEHP-induced testicular tissue damage and maintained the integrity of testicular tissue. The encapsulation of the emulsion system effectively promoted the liver uptake of astaxanthin to prevent liver diseases associated with metabolic disorders.

Abstract
Marine animals, especially shrimp species, have gained interest in research, due to the fact that they contain a plethora of biomolecules, specifically lipids, which have been proven to possess many health benefits in various diseases linked to chronic inflammation or other exogenous factors. This review refers to the lipid composition of a large number of shrimp species, as well as the effects that can alternate the lipid content of these crustaceans. Emphasis is given to the potent anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antithrombotic properties of shrimp bioactives, as well as the effects that these bioactives hold in other diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders, and more. The various health-promoting effects deriving from the consumption of shrimp lipid bioactives and the usage of products containing shrimp lipid extracts are also addressed in this study, through the exploration of several mechanisms of action and the interference of shrimp lipids in these biochemical pathways. Nevertheless, further research on this cultivatable edible species is needed, due to their existing limitations and future prospects which are discussed in this paper.

Abstract
This in vivo study performed in rat adjuvant arthritis aims to advance the understanding of astaxanthin's therapeutic properties for the possible treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in monotherapy and along with the standard RA treatment, methotrexate (MTX), in combination therapy. The main goal was to elucidate astaxanthin's full therapeutic potential, evaluate its dose dependency, and compare its effects in monotherapy with other carotenoids such as β-carotene and β-cryptoxanthin (KXAN). Moreover, potential differences in therapeutic activity caused by using different sources of astaxanthin, synthetic (ASYN) versus isolated from Blakeslea trispora (ASTAP), were evaluated using one-way ANOVA (Tukey-Kramer post hoc test). KXAN was the most effective in reducing plasma MMP-9 levels in monotherapy, significantly better than MTX, and in reducing hind paw swelling. The differences in the action of ASTAP and ASYN have been observed across various biometric, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative parameters. In combined therapy with MTX, the ASYN + MTX combination proved to be better. These findings, especially the significant anti-arthritic effect of KXAN and ASYN + MTX, could be the basis for further preclinical studies.

Abstract
Hypertension is one of the major risk factors for cardiovascular diseases and the main reason for premature death in older adults. Although antihypertensive medications have been used frequently, hypertension prevalence has increased in the last decade. Lifestyle improvement is a cornerstone of hypertension prevention and control. High dietary consumptions of fruits and vegetables are linked to reduced risks of high blood pressure. Carotenoids are natural tetraterpene pigments produced by bacteria, fungi, algae, some animals, and various plants. Because of their high pharmacological potential and safety, they have been mentioned as unique therapeutic agents for a diverse range of diseases. Carotenoids modulate high blood pressure. They also have several additional benefits for the cardiovascular system, including antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-atherogenic, and antiplatelet effects. They improve endothelial function and metabolic profile, as well. In the present article, we reviewed the literature data regarding carotenoids' influence on hypertension in both preclinical and clinical studies. Furthermore, we reviewed the underlying mechanisms associated with antihypertensive properties derived from in vitro and in vivo studies. Suppressing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, Inhibiting angiotensin-II, endothelin-1, and oxidized low-density lipoprotein; and also nitric oxide enhancement are some of the mechanisms by which they lower blood pressure. The present article indicated that astaxanthine, β-carotene, bixin, capsanthin, lutein, crocin, and lycopene have antihypertensive properties. Having significant antioxidant properties, they can decrease high blood pressure and concomitant comorbidities.

Abstract
Astaxanthin (AXT) is a red fat-soluble pigment found naturally in aquatic animals, plants, and various microorganisms and can be manufactured artificially using chemical catalysis. AXT is a xanthophyll carotenoid with a high potential for scavenging free radicals. Several studies have investigated AXT efficacy against diseases such as neurodegenerative, ocular, skin, and cardiovascular hypertension, diabetes, gastrointestinal and liver diseases, and immuno-protective functions. However, its poor solubility, low stability to light and oxygen, and limited bioavailability are major obstacles hindering its wide applications as a therapeutic agent or nutritional supplement. Incorporating AXT with nanocarriers holds great promise in enhancing its physiochemical properties. Nanocarriers are delivery systems with several benefits, including surface modification, bioactivity, and targeted medication delivery and release. Many approaches have been applied to enhance AXT's medicinal effect, including solid lipid nanoparticles, nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) and polymeric nanospheres. AXT nano-formulations have demonstrated a high antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effect, significantly affecting cancer in different organs. This review summarizes the most recent data on AXT production, characterization, biological activity, and therapeutic usage, focusing on its uses in the nanotechnology era.

Abstract
The current review provides an up-to-date analysis of scientific data on astaxanthin (ASX) sources and experimental studies on its health benefits as a potent antioxidant in the aging process. ASX is a liposoluble carotenoid nutrient and reddish-orange pigment, naturally synthesized by numerous microalgae, yeasts, and bacteria as secondary metabolites. Provides a reddish hue to redfish and shellfish flesh that feed on ASX-producing microorganisms. The microalga Haematococcus pluvialis is the most important source for its industrial bioproduction. Due to its strong antioxidant properties, numerous investigations reported that natural ASX is a more significant antioxidant agent than other antioxidants, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and β-carotene. Furthermore, several data show that ASX possesses important nutraceutical applications and health benefits, especially in healthy aging processes. However, further studies are needed for a deeper understanding of the potential mechanisms through which ASX could lead to its effective role in the healthy aging process, such as supporting brain health and skin homeostasis. This review highlights the current investigations on the effective role of ASX in oxidative stress, aging mechanisms, skin physiology, and central nervous system functioning, and shows the potential clinical implications related to its consumption.

Abstract
Carotenoids are natural pigments that provide many health benefits to living organisms. Although terrestrial plants are the major dietary source of carotenoids for humans, aquatic animals (especially fish and shellfish) are equally important because they are rich in certain important carotenoids lacking in fruits and vegetables. Although extensive research has focused on exploring the carotenoid content and composition in fish and shellfish, this information is poorly organized. This paper reviews the scientific evidence for the carotenoid content and composition in fish and shellfish. It makes serious attempts to summarize the relevant data published on specific research questions in order to improve the understanding of various evidence to clarify the research status of carotenoids in fish and shellfish and defining topics for future studies. From the analysis of published data, it is obvious that most fish and shellfish are rich in complex carotenoids (e.g. astaxanthin, fucoxanthin, fucoxanthinol, lutein). These carotenoids have stronger antioxidant effect, higher efficiency in removing the singlet oxygen and the peroxyl radicals, and have a variety of health benefits. Carotenoid levels in fish and shellfish depend on genotype, climatic conditions of the production area, storage and cooking methods. However, the information of the bioavailability of fish/shellfish carotenoids to human is very limited, which hinders the actual contributions to health. The findings of this study can be used as a guide to select appropriate fish and shellfish as dietary sources of carotenoids, and provide information about potential fish and shellfish species for aquaculture to produce carotenoids to meet part of the growing demand for natural carotenoids.

Abstract
Astaxanthin (AST) is a naturally occurring carotenoid that has strong antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptosis effects and is used for the prevention of cancer. There is growing evidence that AST has multiple protective effects against various eye diseases. This article reviews the function and the potential mechanism of AST in dry eye syndrome, keratitis, cataract, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, high intraocular pressure, and other ocular diseases. It provides a theoretical basis for the clinical application of AST as a potential nutraceutical.

Abstract
In recent years, the food, pharma, and cosmetic industries have shown considerable interest in bioactive molecules of marine origin that show high potential for application as nutraceuticals and therapeutic agents. Astaxanthin, a lipid-soluble and orange-reddish-colored carotenoid pigment, is one of the most investigated pigments. Natural astaxanthin is mainly produced from microalgae, and it shows much stronger antioxidant properties than its synthetic counterpart. This paper aims to summarize and discuss the important aspects and recent findings associated with the possible use of crustacean byproducts as a source of astaxanthin. In the last five years of research on the crustaceans and their byproducts as a source of natural astaxanthin, there are many new findings regarding the astaxanthin content in different species and new green extraction protocols for its extraction. However, there is a lack of information on the amounts of astaxanthin currently obtained from the byproducts as well as on the cost-effectiveness of the astaxanthin production from the byproducts. Improvement in these areas would most certainly contribute to the reduction of waste and reuse in the crustacean processing industry. Successful exploitation of byproducts for recovery of this valuable compound would have both environmental and social benefits. Finally, astaxanthin’s strong biological activity and prominent health benefits have been discussed in the paper.
