One Dianionic Luminophore with Three Coordination Modes Binding Four Different Metals: Toward Unexpectedly Phosphorescent Transition Metal Complexes

This work reports on a battery of coordination compounds featuring a versatile dianionic luminophore adopting three different coordination modes (mono, bi, and tridentate) while chelating Pd(II), Pt(II), Au(III), and Hg(II) centers. An in-depth structural characterization of the ligand precursor (H2 L) and six transition metal complexes ([HLPdCNtBu], [LPtCl], [LPtCNtBu], [LPtCNPhen], [HLHgCl], and [LAuCl]) is presented. The influence of the cations and coordination modes of the luminophore and co-ligands on the photophysical properties (including photoluminescence quantum yields (ΦL ), excited state lifetimes (τ), and average (non-)radiative rate constants) are evaluated at various temperatures in different phases. Five complexes show interesting photophysical properties at room temperature (RT) in solution. Embedment in frozen glassy matrices at 77 K significantly boosts their luminescence by suppressing radiationless deactivation paths. Thus, the Pt(II)-based compounds provide the highest efficiencies, with slight variations upon exchange of the ancillary ligand. In the case of [HLPdCNtBu], both ΦL and τ increase over 30-fold as compared to RT. Furthermore, the Hg(II) complex achieves, for the first time in its class, a ΦL exceeding 60% and millisecond-range lifetimes. This demonstrates that a judicious ligand design can pave the way toward versatile coordination compounds with tunable excited state properties.

Luminescence and Palladium: The Odd Couple

The synthesis, photophysical properties, and applications of highly fluorescent and phosphorescent palladium complexes are reviewed, covering the period 2018–2022. Despite the fact that the Pd atom appears closely related with an efficient quenching of the fluorescence of different molecules, different synthetic strategies have been recently optimized to achieve the preservation and even the amplification of the luminescent properties of several fluorophores after Pd incorporation. Beyond classical methodologies such as orthopalladation or the use of highly emissive ligands as porphyrins and related systems (for instance, biladiene), new concepts such as AIE (Aggregation Induced Emission) in metallacages or in coordination-driven supramolecular compounds (CDS) by restriction of intramolecular motions (RIM), or complexes showing TADF (Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence), are here described and analysed. Without pretending to be comprehensive, selected examples of applications in areas such as the fabrication of lighting devices, biological markers, photodynamic therapy, or oxygen sensing are also here reported.

Synthetic access to a phosphorescent non-palindromic pincer complex of palladium by a double oxidative addition – comproportionation sequence

A highly phosphorescent non-palindromic (C^C^N) palladium complex may be prepared by means of a double oxidative addition – comproportionation sequence, which is a new approach for the synthesis of non-palindromic pincer complexes.

Effects of the number of cyclometalated rings and ancillary ligands on the rate of MeI oxidative addition to platinum(ii)–pincer complexes

The reactivity of new organoplatinum(ii)–pincer complexes in their oxidative addition reactions with MeI is related to the ancillary ligand and the number of cyclometalated rings present in the coordination sphere of the Pt centre.

Structures, Photoluminescence, and Reversible Vapoluminescence Properties of Neutral Platinum(II) Complexes Containing Extended π-Conjugated Cyclometalated Ligands

Reacting K2PtCl4 with the tridentate R-C(wedge)N(wedge)C-H2 ligands 2,6-di-(2'-naphthyl)-4-R-pyridine (R = H, 1a; Ph, 1b; 4-BrC6H4, 1c; 3,5-F2C6H3, 1d) in glacial acetic acid, followed by heating in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), gave complexes [(R-C(wedge)N(wedge)C)Pt(DMSO)] (2a-d). In the crystal structures of 2a-c, the molecules are paired in a head-to-tail orientation with Pt...Pt separations >6.3 A, and there are extensive close C-H...pi (d = 2.656-2.891 A), pi...pi (d = 3.322-3.399 A), and C-H...O=S (d = 2.265-2.643 A) contacts. [(Ph-C(wedge)N(wedge)C)Pt(PPh3)] (3) was prepared by reacting 2b with PPh3. Reactions of 2a-d with bis(diphenylphosphino)methane (dppm) gave [(R-C(wedge)N(wedge)C)2Pt2(mu-dppm)] (4a-d). Both head-to-head (syn) and head-to-tail (anti) conformations were found for 4a.6CHCl3.C5H12, whereas only one conformation was observed for 4b.2CHCl3 (syn), 4c.3CH2Cl2 (syn), and 4d.2CHCl3 (anti). In the crystal structures of 4a-d, there are close intramolecular Pt...Pt contacts of 3.272-3.441 A in the syn conformers, and long intramolecular Pt...Pt separations of 5.681-5.714 A in the anti conformers. There are weak C-H...X (d = 2.497-3.134 A) and X...X (X = Cl or Br; d = 2.973-3.655 A) interactions between molecules 4a-d and occluded CHCl3/CH2Cl2 molecules, and their solvent channels are of varying diameters (approximately 9-28 A). Complexes 2a-d, 3, and 4a-d are photoluminescent in the solid state, with emission maxima at 602-643 nm. Upon exposure to volatile organic compounds, 4a shows a fast and reversible vapoluminescent response, which is most intense with volatile halogenated solvents (except CCl4). Powder X-ray diffraction analysis of desolvated 4a revealed a more condensed molecular packing of syn and anti complexes than crystal 4a.6CHCl3.C5H12.

First regioselective ortho-lithiation induced by a 2-chloropyridyl group complexation

It is shown that t-BuLi in Et(2)O promotes an exclusive regioselective metalation of 2-aryl-6-chloropyridine compounds at the aromatic ortho position demonstrating that the 2-chloropyridyl moiety may be considered as a directing group. This functionally directed metalation group was successfully used for the selective lithiation of substituted aromatics and for the straightforward preparation of new N,P ligands.

Platinum Group Organometallics Based on "Pincer" Complexes: Sensors, Switches, and Catalysts

Since the first reports in the late 1970s on transition metal complexes containing pincer-type ligands-named after the particular coordination mode of these ligands-these systems have attracted increasing interest owing to the unusual properties of the metal centers imparted by the pincer ligand. Typically, such a ligand comprises an anionic aryl ring which is ortho,ortho-disubstituted with heteroatom substituents, for example, CH₂ NR₂ , CH₂ PR₂ or CH₂ SR, which generally coordinate to the metal center, and therefore support the M-C σ bond. This commonly results in a terdentate and meridional coordination mode consisting of two metallacycles which share the M-C bond. Detailed studies of the formation and the properties of a large variety of pincers containing platinum group metal complexes have provided direct access to both a fundamental understanding of a variety of reactions in organometallic chemistry and to a range of new applications of these complexes. The discovery of alkane dehydrogenation catalysts, the mechanistic elucidation of fundamental transformations (for example, C-C bond activation), the construction of the first metallodendrimers for sustainable homogeneous catalysis, and the engineering of crystalline switches for materials processing represent only a few of the many highlights which have emanated from these numerous investigations. This review discusses the synthetic methodologies that are currently available for the preparation of platinum group metal complexes containing pincer ligands and especially emphasizes different applications that have been realized in materials science such as the development and engineering of sensors, switches, and catalysts.

Chiral Cyclometalated Platinum(II) and Palladium(II) Complexes with Derivatives of Thienylpyridine as Ligands: Helical Distortion of the Square Planar (SP-4) Geometry

Four cis-bis-cyclometalated complexes of platinum(II) and palladium(II) have been synthesized with chiral substituted thienylpyridine ligands. These ligands are (5aR,6aS)-5,5a,6a,7-tetrahydro-6,6-dimethyl-3-(2'-thienyl)cyclopropa[g]isoquinoline (th4,5capy) (1), (6aR,7aS)-5,6,6a,7a-tetrahydro-7,7-dimethyl-2-(2'-thienyl)cyclopropa[h]quinoline (th5,6capy) (2), (6R,8R)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-9,9-dimethyl-2-(2'-thienyl)-6,8-methanoquinoline (th5,6betappy) (3), and (6R,8R)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-9,9-dimethyl-3-(2'-thienyl)-6,8-methanoisoquinoline (th4,5ppy) (5). Two complexes have a well-defined chirality at the metal center, due to the sterical interaction of the ligands. These complexes are Delta-Pt(th5,6capy)(2) (8) and Lambda-Pt(th5,6betappy)(thpy) (9). The crystal structure of 8 shows a strong distortion from the ideal square planar geometry. Crystals of Delta-Pt(th5,6capy)(2) (8) are tetragonal, space group P4(3)2(1)2, a = 13.407(1) Å, b = 13.407(1) Å, c = 14.860(2) Å, alpha = beta = gamma = 90 degrees, and Z = 4. Final R = 0.0237 and R(w) = 0.0450 for 2353 observed reflections. Compound 8 possesses a crystallographic C(2) symmetry.

Cyclometalated Complexes of Palladium(II) and Platinum(II): cis-Configured Homoleptic and Heteroleptic Compounds with Aromatic C&arcraise;N Ligands

The palladium(II) and platinum(II) bis-homoleptic complexes M(C&arcraise;N)(2), where C&arcraise;N is benzo[h]quinoline (H-bhq), 2-phenylpyridine (H-phpy), 2-(2'-benzothienyl)pyridine (H-bthpy), 2-(2'-thienyl)quinoline (H-thq), and 2-(2'-thienyl)pyridine (H-thpy), were prepared by metal exchange of the lithiated ligands C&arcraise;N with M(Et(2)S)(2)Cl(2). The palladium(II) bis-heteroleptic complexes, Pd(C&arcraise;N)(C'&arcraise;N'), were synthesized from Pd(C&arcraise;N)(2) bis-homoleptic complexes, which were converted by HCl into the dichloro-bridged compounds [Pd(C&arcraise;N)Cl](2). By addition of Et(2)S, the Pd(C&arcraise;N)(Et(2)S)Cl complexes were formed, which were allowed to react with Li(C'&arcraise;N'), yielding M(C&arcraise;N)(C'&arcraise;N') compounds. An alternative way for obtaining the bis-heteroleptic molecules is by ligand exchange, according to the equilibrium M(C&arcraise;N)(2) + M(C'&arcraise;N')(2) = 2M(C&arcraise;N)(C'&arcraise;N'). The crystal structures of Pt(bhq)(2) (1) and Pt(thq)(2) (3) present an important distortion of the square planar (SP-4) geometry toward a two-bladed helix. Bis-homoleptic and some bis-heteroleptic complexes of palladium(II) have also been synthesized. In both cases, the steric interactions between the two ligands cause again a helical distortion rather than yielding trans compounds. For cis-bis(benzo[h]quinoline)platinum(II) (1), in the crystal (monoclinic, space group P2(1)/n, a = 13.728(3) Å, b = 6.9537(15) Å, c = 19.701(5) Å, beta = 106.17(2) degrees, Z = 4, rho(calcd) = 2.028 g.cm(-)(3); diffractometer measurements, block-matrix least-squares refinement, R = 0.043, R(w) = 0.047) the average Pt-N and Pt-C distances are 2.151(6) and 1.988(7) Å, respectively. One benzo[h]quinoline ligand is significantly less planar than the other. For cis-bis[2-(2'-thienyl)quinoline]platinum(II) (3), in the crystal (trigonal, space group P3(2)21, a = b = 9.373(1) Å, c = 20.152(3) Å, Z = 3, rho(calcd) = 2.022 g.cm(-)(3); diffractometer measurements, full-matrix least-squares refinement, R = 0.010, R(w) = 0.010) the molecule has C(2) symmetry and is chiral. The Pt-N and Pt-C bond lengths are 2.156(2) and 1.984(3) Å, respectively. The quinoline moitey is not planar but bent about the fused bond by 6.8 degrees. The thiophene moiety is inclined to the best plane through the quinoline moiety by 24.4 degrees.
