Abstract
The Suzuki-Miyaura coupling is a widely used C-C bond forming reaction. Numerous mechanistic studies have enabled the use of low catalyst loadings and broad functional group tolerance. However, the dominant mode of transmetalation remains controversial and likely depends on the conditions employed. Herein we detail a mechanistic study of the palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling under biphasic conditions. The use of phase transfer catalysts results in a remarkable 12-fold rate enhancement in the targeted system. A shift from an oxo-palladium based transmetalation to a boronate-based pathway lies at the root of this activity. Furthermore, a study of the impact of different water loadings reveals reducing the proportion of the aqueous phase increases the reaction rate, contrary to reaction conditions typically employed in the literature. The importance of these findings is highlighted by achieving an exceptionally broad substrate scope with benzylic electrophiles using a 10-fold reduction in catalyst loading relative to literature precedent.

Abstract
A palladium-catalyzed enantioselective three-component reaction of glyoxylic acid, sulfonamides and aryltrifluoroborates is described. This process provides modular access to the important α-arylglycine motif in moderate to good yields and enantioselectivies. The formed α-arylglycine products constitute useful building blocks for the synthesis of peptides or arylglycine-containing natural products.

Abstract
Herein, we describe the catalytic enantioselective cross-coupling of 1,2-bisboronic esters. Prior work on group specific cross coupling is limited to the use of geminal bis-boronates. This desymmetrization provides a novel approach to prepare enantioenriched cyclopropyl boronates with three contiguous stereocenters, that could be further derivatized through selective functionalization of the carbon-boron bond. Our results suggest that transmetallation, which is the enantiodetermining step, takes place with retention of stereochemistry at carbon.

Abstract
Tetrafluoroborate (BF4 - ) has long been used as a spectator counter anion. Herein, we report an unprecedented salt metathesis between a variety of BF4 - salts and a series of organoboronic acids yielding the corresponding organotrifluoroborates. We identified conditions for fast and efficient fluoridation (<1 h) with minimal workup. Fundamentally, this work discloses the proclivity of BF4 - to exchange fluoride atoms with organoboronates, highlighting the lability of BF4 - .

Abstract
The fundamentals of Pd-catalyzed Csp2−Csp2 Miyaura borylation, Suzuki cross-coupling, and Stille cross-coupling reactions for a variety of borylated precursors based on phenothiazine (PTZ), phenoxazine (POZ), carbazole (Cz), and quinoxaline (QX) units have been explored. Three palladium-based catalysts were chosen for this study: Pd(PPh3)4, Pd(PPh3)2Cl2, and Pd(dppf)Cl2, applying different reaction conditions. Around 16 desired chromophores were successfully designed and synthesized using C-C cross-coupling reactions in moderate to excellent yields, including PTZ, POZ, and Cz units coupled with QX, indolinium iodide, thienyl, phenyl, or triphenylamine moieties. Additionally, PTZ, POZ, and Cz have been employed in synthesizing various pinacol boronate ester derivatives in good to moderate yields. Interestingly, Pd(dppf)Cl2 was found to be the best catalyst for borylation, and C-C cross-coupling reactions occurred in as little as 30 min, with an excellent yield exceeding 98%. Pd(PPh3)4 and Pd(PPh3)2Cl2 catalyzed the reaction to obtain the desired products in moderate to good yields after a long time (20–24 h). On the other hand, the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling between N-(2-methyl)hexyl carbazole pinacol boronate ester derivative 10c and three halogenated quinoxaline derivatives—4-(3-(5-bromothiophen-2-yl)quinoxalin-2-yl)benzaldehyde (27), 4-(5-(3-(5-bromothiophen-2-yl)quinoxalin-2-yl)thiophen-2-yl)benzaldehyde (30), and 4-(3-chloroquinoxalin-2-yl)benzaldehyde (25) catalyzed by Pd(PPh3)4—afforded three carbazole-quinoxaline chromophores (28, 30, and 31, respectively) in 2–3 h, with good to excellent yields reaching 86%. The electron-deficient QX couplers proved to be coupled efficiently using the Stille coupling reaction, which involves the coupling between electron-rich orgaostannane and electron-deficient halide. The synthesized precursors and desired chromophores were characterized by FTIR, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and HRMS.

Abstract
Perylene monoimide based electron acceptors have great properties for use in organic solar cells, like thermal stability, strong absorption, and simple synthesis. However, they typically exhibit low values for the dielectric permittivity. This hinders efficient exciton dissociation, limiting the achievable power conversion efficiencies. In this work, we present the synthesis and utilization of two new acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) molecules, comprising perylene monoimide as electron withdrawing A unit. Oligo ethylene glycol side chain modified carbazole (PMI-[C-OEG]) and fluorene (PMI-[F-OEG]) linkers were used as electron rich D units, respectively. The polar side chains are expected to increase the polarizability of the molecules and, thus, their permittivity according to the Clausius-Mossotti relationship. We found that the incorporation of glycol chains improved the dielectric properties of both materials in comparison to the reference compounds with alkyl chains. The permittivity increased by 18% from 3.17 to 3.75 for the carbazole-based non-fullerene acceptor PMI-[C-OEG] and by 12% from 3.10 to 3.47 for the fluorene-based acceptor PMI-[F-OEG]. The fabricated solar cells revealed power conversion efficiencies of 3.71 ± 0.20% (record 3.92%) with PMI-[C-OEG], and 1.21 ± 0.06% (record 1.51%) with PMI-[F-OEG]. Abstract
While the modular construction of molecules from suitable building blocks is a powerful means to more rapidly generate a diversity of molecules than through customized syntheses, the further evolution of the underlying coupling methodology is key to realize widespread applications. We herein disclose a complementary modular coupling approach to the widely employed Suzuki coupling strategy of boron containing precursors, which relies on organogermane containing building blocks as key orthogonal functionality and an electrophilic (rather than nucleophilic) unmasking event paired with air‐stable PdI dimer based bond construction. This allows to significantly shorten the reaction times for the iterative coupling steps and/or to close gaps in the accessible compound space, enabling straightforward access also to iodinated compounds.

Abstract
Reagent instability reduces the efficiency of chemical processes, and while much effort is devoted to reaction optimization, less attention is paid to the mechanistic causes of reagent decomposition. Indeed, the response is often to simply use an excess of the reagent. Two reaction classes with ubiquitous examples of this are the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of boronic acids/esters and the transfer of CF3 or CF2 from the Ruppert-Prakash reagent, TMSCF3. This Account describes some of the overarching features of our mechanistic investigations into their decomposition. In the first section we summarize how specific examples of (hetero)arylboronic acids can decompose via aqueous protodeboronation processes: Ar-B(OH)2 + H2O → ArH + B(OH)3. Key to the analysis was the development of a kinetic model in which pH controls boron speciation and heterocycle protonation states. This method revealed six different protodeboronation pathways, including self-catalysis when the pH is close to the pKa of the boronic acid, and protodeboronation via a transient aryl anionoid pathway for highly electron-deficient arenes. The degree of "protection" of boronic acids by diol-esterification is shown to be very dependent on the diol identity, with six-membered ring esters resulting in faster protodeboronation than the parent boronic acid. In the second section of the Account we describe 19F NMR spectroscopic analysis of the kinetics of the reaction of TMSCF3 with ketones, fluoroarenes, and alkenes. Processes initiated by substoichiometric "TBAT" ([Ph3SiF2][Bu4N]) involve anionic chain reactions in which low concentrations of [CF3]- are rapidly and reversibly liberated from a siliconate reservoir, [TMS(CF3)2][Bu4N]. Increased TMSCF3 concentrations reduce the [CF3]- concentration and thus inhibit the rates of CF3 transfer. Computation and kinetics reveal that the TMSCF3 intermolecularly abstracts fluoride from [CF3]- to generate the CF2, in what would otherwise be an endergonic α-fluoride elimination. Starting from [CF3]- and CF2, a cascade involving perfluoroalkene homologation results in the generation of a hindered perfluorocarbanion, [C11F23]-, and inhibition. The generation of CF2 from TMSCF3 is much more efficiently mediated by NaI, and in contrast to TBAT, the process undergoes autoacceleration. The process involves NaI-mediated α-fluoride elimination from [CF3][Na] to generate CF2 and a [NaI·NaF] chain carrier. Chain-branching, by [(CF2)3I][Na] generated in situ (CF2 + TFE + NaI), causes autoacceleration. Alkenes that efficiently capture CF2 attenuate the chain-branching, suppress autoacceleration, and lead to less rapid difluorocyclopropanation. The Account also highlights how a collaborative approach to experiment and computation enables mechanistic insight for control of processes.

Abstract
A wide range of aryl boronic 1,1,2,2-tetraethylethylene glycol esters [ArB(Epin)s] were readily synthesized. Purifying aryl boronic esters by conventional silica gel chromatography is generally challenging; however, these introduced derivatives are easily purified on silica gel and isolated in excellent yields. We subjected the purified ArB(Epin) to Suzuki-Miyaura couplings, which provided higher yields of the desired biaryl products than those obtained using the corresponding aryl boronic acids or pinacol esters.

Abstract
This review discusses recent advances in the chemistry of saturated boronic acids, boronates, and trifluoroborates. Applications of the title compounds in the design of boron-containing drugs are surveyed, with special emphasis on α-amino boronic derivatives. A general overview of saturated boronic compounds as modern tools to construct C(sp3 )-C and C(sp3 )-heteroatom bonds is given, including recent developments in the Suzuki-Miyaura and Chan-Lam cross-couplings, single-electron-transfer processes including metallo- and organocatalytic photoredox reactions, and transformations of boron "ate" complexes. Finally, an attempt to summarize the current state of the art in the synthesis of saturated boronic acids, boronates, and trifluoroborates is made, with a brief mention of the "classical" methods (transmetallation of organolithium/magnesium reagents with boron species, anti-Markovnikov hydroboration of alkenes, and the modification of alkenyl boron compounds) and a special focus on recent methodologies (boronation of alkyl (pseudo)halides, derivatives of carboxylic acids, alcohols, and primary amines, boronative C-H activation, novel approaches to alkene hydroboration, and 1,2-metallate-type rearrangements).

Abstract
The kinetics and mechanism of the base-catalyzed hydrolysis (ArB(OR)2 → ArB(OH)2) and protodeboronation (ArB(OR)2 → ArH) of a series of boronic esters, encompassing eight different polyols and 10 polyfluoroaryl and heteroaryl moieties, have been investigated by in situ and stopped-flow NMR spectroscopy (19F, 1H, and 11B), pH-rate dependence, isotope entrainment, 2H KIEs, and KS-DFT computations. The study reveals the phenomenological stability of boronic esters under basic aqueous-organic conditions to be highly nuanced. In contrast to common assumption, esterification does not necessarily impart greater stability compared to the corresponding boronic acid. Moreover, hydrolysis of the ester to the boronic acid can be a dominant component of the overall protodeboronation process, augmented by self-, auto-, and oxidative (phenolic) catalysis when the pH is close to the pKa of the boronic acid/ester.

Abstract
Azine-containing biaryls are ubiquitous scaffolds in many areas of chemistry, and efficient methods for their synthesis are continually desired. Pyridine rings are prominent amongst these motifs. Transition-metal-catalysed cross-coupling reactions have been widely used for their synthesis and functionalisation as they often provide a swift and tuneable route to related biaryl scaffolds. However, 2-pyridine organometallics are capricious coupling partners and 2-pyridyl boron reagents in particular are notorious for their instability and poor reactivity in Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. The synthesis of pyridine-containing biaryls is therefore limited, and methods for the formation of unsymmetrical 2,2'-bis-pyridines are scarce. This Review focuses on the methods developed for the challenging coupling of 2-pyridine nucleophiles with (hetero)aryl electrophiles, and ranges from traditional cross-coupling processes to alternative nucleophilic reagents and novel main group approaches.

Abstract
Organotrifluoroborates serve as coupling partners during transmetalation in the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction but require hydrolysis prior to the coupling reaction. Their anionic nature allows study of their hydrolysis by electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) through real-time monitoring, complemented by pH analysis. The induction period varied according to the borates employed, and a dynamic series of equilibria for numerous ions was observed during hydrolysis. We found that the induction periods and reaction rates were sensitive to the R group of the borates, the shape of the reaction vessel, and stir rate.

Abstract
The gas-phase unimolecular reactions of the silver(i) complex [Ag(PhBF3)2]-, formed via electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry of solutions containing the phenyltrifluoroborate salt and AgNO3, are examined. Upon collision induced dissociation (CID) three major reaction channels were observed for [Ag(PhBF3)2]-: Ph- group transfer via a transmetalation reaction to yield [PhAg(PhBF3)]-; F- transfer to produce [FAg(PhBF3)]-; and release of PhBF3-. The anionic silver product complexes of these reactions, [LAg(PhBF3)]- (where L = Ph and F), were then mass-selected and subjected to a further stage of CID. [PhAg(PhBF3)]- undergoes a Ph- group transfer via transmetalation to yield [Ph2Ag]- with loss of BF3. [FAg(PhBF3)]- solely fragments via loss of BF4-, a reaction that involves Ph- group transfer from B to Ag in conjunction with F- transfer from Ag to B. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations on the various competing pathways reveal that: (i) the overall endothermicities govern the experimentally observed product ion abundances; (ii) the Ph- group and F- transfer reactions proceed via late transition states; and (iii) formation of BF4- from [FAg(PhBF3)]- is a multistep reaction in which Ph- group transfer from B to Ag proceeds first to produce a [FAgPh(BF3)]- complex in which the BF3 moiety is initially weakly bound to the ipso-carbon of the phenyl group and then migrates across the linear [FAgPh]- moiety from C to Ag to F yielding [PhAg(BF4)]-, which can then dissociate via loss of PhAg.

Abstract
AbstractThe Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of 2-bromo-1,3-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzene with arylboronic acids was evaluated and determined to suffer from the formation of large amounts of boronic acid homocoupling products in conjunction with dehalogenation. Homocoupling product formation in this process likely occurs through a rare protonolysis/second transmetalation event rather than by the well-established mechanism requiring the involvement of O2. The scope of this boronic acid homocoupling reaction was investigated and shown to predominate with electron-deficient arylboronic acids. Finally, a good yield of cross-coupling products could be obtained by employing dicyclohexyl(2′,6′-dimethoxybiphenyl-2-yl)phosphine (SPhos) as the ligand.

Abstract
An efficient Pd-catalyzed arylation of alkylpyridine based on the pyridinium activation strategy has been developed for synthesis of mixed aryl alkylpyridines. It was found that (1) the N-methyl group in the pyridinium salts acted as a transient activator and could be automatically departed after the reaction, (2) CuBr was an indispensable additive for achieving the C6-selective arylation, (3) the α-branched alkyl chain on the alkylpyridine greatly increased the yield of the product. Deuterium labelling experiment revealed that in the case of the α-branched alkylpyridine, the presence of CuBr completely inhibited the H/D exchange at the benzylic position and thus enabled the selective arylation at the C6 position. This protocol demonstrates a broad substrate scope, and with respect to both the aryl iodides and the α-branched alkylpyridine, the desired mixed aryl alkylpyridines were obtained in generally good to excellent yields.

Abstract
Herein, a mild and operationally simple method for the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of boronic esters is described. Central to this advance is the use of the organic-soluble base, potassium trimethylsilanolate, which allows for a homogeneous, anhydrous cross-coupling. The coupling proceeds at a rapid rate, often furnishing products in quantitative yield in less than 5 min. By applying this method, a >10-fold decrease in reaction time was observed for three published reactions which required >48 h to reach satisfactory conversion.

Abstract
Activation of the leukotriene A4 hydrolase (LTA4H) aminopeptidase (AP) activity with 4-methoxydiphenylmethane (4MDM) promoted resolution of neutrophil infiltration in a murine cigarette smoke-induced model for emphysematous chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Recently, 4-(4-benzylphenyl)thiazol-2-amine (ARM1) was published as a ligand for LTA4H with potential anti-inflammatory properties. To investigate the effect of modifier structure on enzyme kinetics of LTA4H, a series of analogues bearing structural features of ARM1 and 4MDM were synthesized using trifluoroborate Suzuki coupling reactions. Following, the 2.8 Å X-ray crystal structure of LTA4H complexed with 4-OMe-ARM1, a 4MDM-ARM1 hybrid molecule, was determined. Kinetic analysis showed that ARM1 and related analogues lowered affinity for the enzyme-substrate complex, resulting in a change of mechanism from hyperbolic mixed predominately catalytic activation (HMx(Sp < Ca)A) as observed for 4MDM to a predominately specific activation (HMx(Sp > Ca)A) mechanism. 4-OMe-ARM1 was then shown to dose responsively reduce LTB4 production in human neutrophils.

Abstract
The Suzuki-Miyaura reaction is the most practiced palladium-catalyzed, cross-coupling reaction because of its broad applicability, low toxicity of the metal (B), and the wide variety of commercially available boron substrates. A wide variety of boronic acids and esters, each with different properties, have been developed for this process. Despite the popularity of the Suzuki-Miyaura reaction, the precise manner in which the organic fragment is transferred from boron to palladium has remained elusive for these reagents. Herein, we report the observation and characterization of pretransmetalation intermediates generated from a variety of commonly employed boronic esters. The ability to confirm the intermediacy of pretransmetalation intermediates provided the opportunity to clarify mechanistic aspects of the transfer of the organic moiety from boron to palladium in the key transmetalation step. A series of structural, kinetic, and computational investigations revealed that boronic esters can transmetalate directly without prior hydrolysis. Furthermore, depending on the boronic ester employed, significant rate enhancements for the transfer of the B-aryl groups were observed. Overall, two critical features were identified that enable the transfer of the organic fragment from boron to palladium: (1) the ability to create an empty coordination site on the palladium atom and (2) the nucleophilic character of the ipso carbon bound to boron. Both of these features ultimately relate to the electron density of the oxygen atoms in the boronic ester.

Abstract
A catalytic redox system for the direct conjugate addition of pyridines and diazines to Michael acceptors has been developed.
The direct addition of pyridine and diazine units to electron-poor alkenes has been achieved via a redox radical mechanism that is enabled by limiting the effective concentration of the hydrogen-atom source. The described method is tolerant of acidic functional groups and is generally applicable to the union of a wide range of Michael acceptors and 6-membered heterocyclic halides.
