Abstract
BACKGROUND Dietary flavonoid intakes have been associated with improved markers of bone health in Chinese and Scottish cohorts, but little data exist in middle aged to older adults in the United States. OBJECTIVES The objective of our research was to assess if dietary flavonoid intakes are associated with bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and bone area of the lumbar spine and femoral neck in a nationally representative population of middle aged to older U.S. adults. We further sought to investigate if relationships of the main flavonoid subgroups (i.e., anthocyanins, flavan-3-ols, flavanones, flavones, flavonols, and isoflavones) exist, as a secondary objective. METHODS Cross-sectional data from individuals aged 50+ years enrolled in the 2017-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were used in our analyses (N = 2590). Weighted multivariate logistic regression models were used to investigate the relationship between quartiles of flavonoid intake and BMD, BMC, and bone area of the lumbar spine and femoral neck of participants. RESULTS Mean age of participants was 63.4 ± 0.52 years and 64.1 ± 0.52 years for men and women, respectively. Average total flavonoid intake was 217 ± 19.4 mg/day and 306 ± 26.9 mg/day for men and women, respectively. Total flavonoid intakes were not significantly associated with BMD, BMC, or bone area of the femoral neck or lumbar spine in male or female participants. Flavonoid subclass intakes were also not consistently associated with improved markers of bone health. CONCLUSION Although several limitations exist, this cross-sectional analysis of U.S. adults aged 50+ years provides contradictory evidence to the hypothesis that higher flavonoid and flavonoid subclass intakes beneficially impacts markers of bone health. Large prospective cohort investigations that better capture long-term dietary flavonoid intake and ascertain fractures the primary outcome, as well as randomized controlled trials, are needed to fully elucidate the effects flavonoids on bone health.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a senior-friendly diet based on the dietary inflammatory index (DII) on the nutritional status and health indicators of older people. A total of 256 participants were classified into tertiles based on their DII values and split into intervention (n = 201) and control (n = 55) groups. The intervention group was provided with a senior-friendly diet, and the control group was allowed to eat their usual diet. Before and after the trial, anthropometric measurements, blood analyses, and questionnaires were completed for both groups. The mean age of the participants was 82.49 years, and 66.4% were female. On average, participants had 2.5 medical conditions, with a notable prevalence of cardiovascular disease. Following the intervention, the energy, carbohydrate, protein, and fat intakes significantly increased in the intervention group compared to pre-intervention levels. Tertile 3 exhibited substantial improvements in total nutrition score, NQ-E balance, and DII total score, as well as in triglycerides and blood glucose, attributed to this dietary intervention compared to other groups. In comparison with Tertile 1, nutrient intake and nutritional status in Tertile 3 were closely associated with significant influencing factors of the dietary intervention. For the group with the worst DII (Tertile 3), this dietary intervention greatly improved nutritional status, nutrient intake, and clinical indicators; thus, this senior-friendly diet appears to be beneficial for elderly people with nutritional vulnerabilities.

Abstract
Background The inflammatory potential of unhealthy diets can lead to the development of chronic diseases and also exacerbating their complications. Therefore, the present systematic review aimed to evaluate the association of dietary inflammatory index (DII) and quality of life (QOL) in human subjects. Methods A systematic search was conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases, using the combination of all search terms related to DII and QOL until May 2022. All eligible human studies published in English were included. Results Three hundred twenty-seven studies were obtained from the first systematic search of the databases although, only eight studies were eligible for the evaluation. Seven studies reported that there was a significant reverse association between DII scores and overall QOL and/or its subscales in different populations including patients with asthma, osteoarthritis, hemodialysis patients, multiple sclerosis, obese women, and also in healthy subjects. While, one study on postmenopausal women found no evidence of this association. Conclusion This systematic review demonstrated that an anti-inflammatory diet might be associated with better QOL. However, future well-designed clinical trials can provide better conclusions especially regarding the quantifying of this relationship.

Abstract
PURPOSE The dietary inflammatory index (DII) is a scoring system to quantify the inflammatory effects of nutrients and foods. Inflammation may affect bone health. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships of DII with bone mineral density (BMD) and osteoporosis. METHODS This study involved 1023 women and 1080 men (age ≥ 50) in the US National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES), 2017-2018. Multivariable linear regression models were used to estimate the associations between DII and BMD. Association between DII and osteoporosis was tested with multivariable logistic regression models. RESULTS In women, DII was negatively associated with total hip and femoral neck BMD after adjusting for covariates (P < 0.05). In men, DII was negatively associated with lumbar spine BMD (P < 0.05). DII was positively associated with osteoporosis in women (P < 0.05). The odds ratios (ORs) (95% CI) for osteoporosis associated with DII quartiles 2, 3 and 4 vs. quartile 1 were 2.95 (1.08, 8.09), 5.63 (2.87, 11.04), and 6.14(2.55, 14.78), respectively. No significant association was observed in men. CONCLUSIONS Higher DII scores were associated with increase osteoporosis risk in women, while no association was found in men. Greater pro-inflammatory diets might be associated with lower BMD in both women and men.
