Deconstructing adolescent ethnicity: A longitudinal analysis of ethnic-racial identity development and self-categorization

Even worse for Black girls: the longitudinal association of racial bullying with the initiation of alcohol and tobacco use

We used Poisson's linear regression to examine the association between racial bullying (RB) and the initiation of alcohol and tobacco uses after 9 months. Two cluster-randomized controlled trials were conducted in 2019 with children in grades five (girls: 50.0%; 10 years old: 82.0%; White: 36.8%; Black: 58.7%; others: 4.5%) and seven (girls: 49.5%; 12 years old: 78.1%; White: 33.2%; Black: 60.4%; others: 6.4%) from 30 public schools in the municipality of São Paulo, Brazil. We restricted our analyses to 2 subsets of students in each grade: those who reported no lifetime alcohol use at baseline and those who reported no lifetime baseline tobacco use. At baseline, 16.2% of fifth and 10.7% of seventh graders reported suffering from RB in the 30 days before data collection. After 9 months, 14.9% of fifth graders started using alcohol and 2.5%, tobacco. Among seventh graders, the figures were 31.2% and 7.7%, respectively. RB predicted the initiation of use of alcohol (risk ratio [RR] = 1.36; 95% CI, 1.07-1.70) and tobacco (RR = 1.81; 95% CI, 1.14-2.76) among seventh graders, with race-gender differences, particularly in Black girls (alcohol: RR = 1.45; 95% CI, 1.07-1.93; tobacco: RR = 2.34; 95% CI, 1.31-3.99). School-based programs and policies must explicitly address issues related to racism and gender in alcohol and tobacco prevention strategies.

Making sense of conflicting messages of multiracial identity: a systematic review

Background

Ethnic-racial identity (ERI) development refers to how individuals' experiences, beliefs, and attitudes influence understanding of ethnic-racial group membership. Messages about race, from multiple ecosystems, influence identity development and how individuals come to form their ERI. There has been a shift in ERI research to focus on Multiracial populations, however, most of the research focus is on Black/white biracial and general, non-specified Multiracial populations. The ERI development process and experience for persons of other Multiracial backgrounds (e.g., AfroLatinx or AsianBlack) is not as extensively studied. This systematic literature review aims to elucidate the existing conceptualization of Multiracial ERI development for non-Black/white biracial and general Multiracial populations in the United States.

Methods

A comprehensive search strategy was employed across multiple academic databases to identify relevant studies based on explicit inclusion criteria. The initial search resulted in 1,846 articles, but when only Black/white biracial and non-specified general Multiracial studies were eliminated from this review, only 18 articles met the criteria for inclusion.

Results

Common themes emerged from the reviewed literature, including the importance of spaces, conflicting social messages directed at Multiracial individuals, and coping responses used by Multiracial individuals when faced with challenges by family members and peers regarding their multiracial identity.

Discussion

The findings underscore the need for a more nuanced exploration of ERI development among diverse Multiracial populations. Understanding the unique strengths, experiences, and challenges of different Multiracial populations beyond the Black-white biracial paradigm is essential for understanding ERI development across and between different Multiracial populations in today's world.

Cultural identity affiliation and alcohol use and related consequences among American Indian and White adolescents: A latent profile analysis

BACKGROUND

Adolescent alcohol use is a significant public health concern and rates of alcohol use are higher among American Indian (AI) adolescents than national samples of non-AI youth. A potential factor in understanding AI alcohol use is cultural identity, which can vary widely based on experiences of historical trauma. We used latent class analysis to examine cultural identity in AI and White adolescents and their alcohol use outcomes in relation to the latent class solutions.

METHODS

The samples included 3189 AI adolescents (M_age  = 14.76, 48.9% female) and 1579 White adolescents (M_age  = 15.56, 48.7% female) living on or near a reservation. Participants completed self-report measures of AI and White cultural identity affiliation, alcohol use, and alcohol-related problems. We examined (1) the best-fitting latent class solution with respect to American Indian (AI) and White cultural identity; (2) equivalence of the latent class solution; and (3) alcohol use outcomes across the optimal latent class solution.

RESULTS

Latent profile analyses indicated an optimal 3-class solution in both the AI and White samples, which differed by level of affiliation with AI and White cultural identity. While the optimal number of classes were similar across racial groups (configural profile similarity), the nature of the classes differed (structural profile dissimilarity). The three classes represented low overall scores on AI and White cultural identity (Marginalized), a mixture of high and low scores on AI and White cultural identity (Third Culture), and overall high scores on AI and White cultural identity (Bicultural). Alcohol-related problems predicted membership in the Third Culture class compared with the Marginalized class and the Bicultural class. Specifically, youth in the Third Culture class reported significantly fewer alcohol-related problems than youth in the Marginalized and Bicultural classes. Alcohol use did not predict latent class membership.

CONCLUSIONS

The future-oriented nature of the Third Culture class may provide protection against adverse alcohol-related outcomes. Research is needed to test interventions that target greater future orientation and future plans to integrate culture into adolescents' lives.
