Shear bond strength of metallic and ceramic brackets using color change adhesives

OBJECTIVE

To determine the shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets using color change adhesives that are supposed to aid in removing excess of bonding material and compare them to a traditional adhesive.

METHODS

Ninety metallic and ninety ceramic brackets were bonded to bovine incisors using two color change adhesives and a regular one. A tensile stress was applied by a universal testing machine. The teeth were observed in a microscope after debonding in order to determine the Adhesive Remnant Index (ARI).

RESULTS

The statistical analysis (ANOVA, Tukey, and Kruskall-Wallis tests) demonstrated that the mean bond strength presented no difference when metallic and ceramic brackets were compared, but the bond resistance values were significantly different for the three adhesives used. The most common ARI outcome was the entire adhesive remaining on the enamel.

CONCLUSIONS

The bond strength was similar for metallic and ceramic brackets when the same adhesive system was used. ARI scores demonstrated that bonding with these adhesives is safe even when ceramic brackets were used. On the other hand, bond strength was too low for orthodontic purposes when Ortho Lite Cure was used.

A review of the structure of human and bovine dental hard tissues and their physicochemical behaviour in relation to erosive challenge and remineralisation

OBJECTIVES

This review sets out to examine the suitability of bovine hard dental material in lieu of human material when investigating dental erosion, to review the evidence for the major factors popularly attributed to dental erosion: pH, pKa, acid type, erosion duration, temperature and stirring rate as well as examine the case for the use of fluoride in an anti-erosion capacity.

Published works were selected using online search software ICI Web of Knowledge and Pubmed, with key terms such as "enamel", "erosion" and "bovine AND human" and cross referenced with relevant papers cited in the indices.

RESULTS

The growing trend of dental erosion, coupled to legislative changes has precipitated a recent shortage of human enamel and dentine for experimental work. This in turn has resulted in the increasing use of cheap and readily available alternate supplies being sourced. This alternate supply principally originates from beef cattle under 20 months of age, under the assumption that bovine enamel and dentine will behave in a manner similar to human material. Recent experiments attempting to compare the physicochemical properties of these two species have shown that erosion is not simply a matter of bulk tissue loss resulting from acid exposure, but a multi-factorial event encompassing ever increasing and varied complexity of the inter-relationship between solvent and substrate.

CONCLUSIONS

Accurate data from the published literature regarding the comparative properties of human and bovine hard dental tissue remains scarce but consensus appears to accept the continuing use of bovine enamel as a substitute for human enamel. This lack of comparative data is further hampered by the lack of an established, standardised protocol with which to evaluate the two species. In addition, much debate remains regarding the significant principal factors responsible for dental erosion and ways to minimise the pathological manifestation.

Evaluation of Scotchbond Multipurpose and maleic acid as alternative methods of bonding orthodontic brackets

Damage to the enamel surface during bonding and debonding of orthodontic brackets is a clinical concern. Alternative bonding methods that minimize enamel surface damage while maintaining a clinically useful bond strength is an aim of current research. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects on bond strength and bracket failure location of two adhesives (System 1+ and Scotchbond Multipurpose, 3M Dental Products Division) and two enamel conditioners (37% phosphoric acid and 10% maleic acid). Forty-eight freshly extracted human premolars were pumiced and divided into four groups of 12 teeth, and metal orthodontic brackets were attached to the enamel surface by one of four protocols: (1) System 1+ and phosphoric acid, (2) Scotchbond and phosphoric acid, (3) System 1+ and maleic acid, and (4) Scotchbond and maleic acid. After bracket attachment, the teeth were mounted in phenolic rings and stored in deionized water at 37 degrees C for 72 hours. A Zwick universal testing machine (Zwick GmbH & Co.) was used to determine shear bond strengths. The residual adhesive on the enamel surface was evaluated with the Adhesive Remnant Index. The analysis of variance was used to compare the four groups. Significance was predetermined at p < or = 0.05. The results indicated that there were no significant differences in bond strength among the four groups (p = 0.386). The results of the Chi square test, evaluating the residual adhesives on the enamel surfaces, revealed significant differences among the four groups (mean 2 = 0.005). A Duncan multiple range test revealed the difference occurred between the phosphoric acid and maleic acid groups, with maleic acid having bond failures at the enamel-adhesive interface. In conclusion, the use of Scotchbond Multipurpose and/or maleic acid does not significantly effect bond strength, however, the use of maleic acid resulted in an unfavorable bond failure location.

Dentin bonding: overview of the substrate with respect to adhesive material

The current challenge in adhesive dentistry is to develop dentin bonding systems that will reproducibly achieve high bond strengths similar to those obtained between resins and acid-etched enamel. Some of the limitations of dentin as a bonding substrate are that it changes its structure as it is prepared deeper, it is difficult to dry, and its smear layer is weak. Further, it is difficult to avoid contaminating proximal boxes with blood. Such contamination lowers dentin bond strengths to very low values. Decontamination of such dentin must be done prior to resin placement. The forces of polymerization contraction depend, in part, on the shape of cavities and how they are filled. Bulk filling of class I cavities can lead to conditions in which the forces of polymerization contraction exceed dentin bond strength with some materials and locations. The future development of resin systems that do not shrink on polymerization would eliminate many current problems in adhesive dentistry.

Effects of etchant concentration and duration on the retention of orthodontic brackets: an in vivo study

Etching of enamel before the bonding of orthodontic attachments is usually done with a solution of 37% H3PO4 for 60 seconds. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of etchant concentration and duration on the clinical retention of bonded orthodontic attachments. Two randomly selected groups of orthodontic patients participated in the study. In both groups, teeth in contralateral quadrants, excluding the molar teeth, were bonded. In the first group, 158 teeth were etched with a solution of 37% H3PO4 for 60 seconds, and 155 teeth were etched with 37% H3PO4 for 15 seconds. In the second group, 196 teeth were etched with 37% H3PO4 and 196 teeth with 15% H3PO4, both for 60 seconds. Conventional edgewise mechanotherapy was used in both groups of patients. After 24 months of treatment, in the first group, 8 brackets were dislodged when etched with 37% H3PO4 for 60 seconds and 9 when etched with 37% H3PO4 for 15 seconds. In the second group, 6 brackets were dislodged when etched with 37% H3PO4 for 60 seconds and 13 were dislodged when etched with 15% H3PO4 for 60 seconds. Reducing the etching time of 37% H3PO4 from 60 seconds to 15 seconds or reducing the acid concentration from 37% to 15% H3PO4 applied for 60 seconds had no significantly different effect on the retention of bonded orthodontic attachments. The results suggest that the reduction of etchant concentration and the duration of etching in orthodontic bonding should be considered.

Effects of phosphoric acid concentration and etch duration on the shear bond strength of an orthodontic bonding resin to enamel. An in vitro study

The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the effects of phosphoric acid (H3PO4) concentration and duration of etching on the shear bond strength of an orthodontic bonding resin to enamel. Nine bonding procedures, each involving 18 extracted human maxillary permanent canines, were used. Ground enamel surfaces were etched with a 37% H3PO4 solution, a 15% H3PO4 gel, or a 5% H3PO4 solution for 60, 30, and 15 seconds, respectively. Cylinders of an orthodontic bonding resin, Concise, were prepared in a special device. The test specimens were disassembled 15 minutes after preparation and stored in distilled water at 37 degrees C for 24 hours. A shear load was applied to the bonded cylinders at a crosshead speed of 0.02 in.min-1 in an Instron testing machine, and the shear bond strengths were calculated and expressed in MN.m-2. A two-factor analysis of the data showed that the H3PO4 concentration had no significant effect on the shear bond strength, but the duration of etching affected shear bond strength significantly. The enamel aspects of the fractured test specimens were examined microscopically and the percent failure within the bonding resin at the bonding sites estimated. The correlation between shear bond strength and percentage failure within the bonding resin was not significant. The effects of the nine etching procedures on ground and unground enamel surfaces were studied by scanning electron microscopy. The etching procedures produced well-defined etching patterns on both ground and unground enamel surfaces.

Tensile bond strengths of orthodontic bonding resins and attachments to etched enamel

The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the tensile bond strengths (TBS) of several orthodontic bonding systems and orthodontic brackets to enamel surfaces exposed to different etching procedures. The TBS of four bonding systems were determined by a test method developed by Kemper and Kilian. Twelve test specimens were prepared for each procedure. The test system was modified to determine the TBS of orthodontic brackets bonded to enamel surfaces by six bonding procedures and the TBS were evaluated 15 minutes and 24 hours after specimen preparation. The specimens were loaded to failure in an Instron machine operated at a crosshead speed of 0.02 inch/min. The TBS were expressed in MN.m-2. The TBS of the four bonding systems to etched enamel were not significantly different (P = 0.2528). The TBS of bonded brackets determined 24 hours after specimen preparation were not significantly different than the TBS recorded after 15 minutes except for brackets bonded with Lee Cleanse and Bond I to enamel surfaces etched with 15% H3PO4 for 30 seconds. The TBS of brackets to enamel etched with 15% H3PO4 for 30 seconds were not significantly different from the TBS to enamel surfaces etched with 5% H3PO4 for 15 seconds except for brackets bonded with Lee Cleanse and Bond II and tested 24 hours after bonding.
