Synthesis and characterization of low surface energy fluoropolymers as potential barrier coatings in oral care

Perfluoroalkylated alternating copolymer possessing solubility in fluorous liquids and imaging capabilities under high energy radiation

A highly fluorinated alternating polymer, P(RFMi-St), possessing improved thermal properties and patterning capabilities over perfluoroalkyl polymethacrylates under high energy radiation was achieved with semi-perfluorododecyl maleimide (RFMi) and styrene (St). RFMi could be synthesised efficiently via a Mitsunobu reaction condition and copolymerised with St by free radical and reversible-deactivation radical polymerisation protocols. P(RFMi-St) showed a satisfactory glass-transition temperature (108 °C) and intermolecular cross-linking behaviour under electron-beam and commercially more important extreme UV (λ = 13.5 nm) irradiation. The exposed regions lost their solubility, resulting in the successful formation of mechanically non-deteriorated negative-tone images down to 50 nm. In addition, P(RFMi-St) could be solution-processed with chemically non-damaging fluorous liquids, which enabled the polymer to be applied effectively on top of an organic semiconductor layer as a dielectric material (dielectric constant 2.7) for the organic field-effect transistor fabrication.

Chemical and mechanical resistance of novel experimental hybrid coatings on dentin permeability

This study aimed to evaluate the capacity of novel experimental hybrid coatings (HC) to reduce dentin permeability and to verify their resistance to erosive and abrasive challenges. Dentin disc specimens (1 mm thick) were treated with 0.5 M EDTA solution and randomly allocated into three experimental groups (n = 10): Control (Saliva); Concentrated Hybrid Coating (TEOS/GPTMS/Y-APS); and Diluted Hybrid Coating (1:3 ratio with distilled water). Dentin permeability was assessed by hydraulic conductance in the following experimental time periods: post-EDTA, post treatment, post erosion (5 min in 0.05 M citric acid solution, pH = 3.8), and post abrasion (toothbrushing for 3,900 cycles). Dentin permeability percent was calculated with respect the values of post-EDTA for each experimental time. The morphology of the surface of extra dentin specimens was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in the same time periods (n = 3). Permeability data were analyzed by two-way repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey tests (p < .05). Both HC presented significantly lower dentin permeability than control post treatment and post erosion (p < .05), without difference between them (p > .05). Post abrasion, there were no significant difference among groups (p > .05). Post treatment and post erosion, the HC seemed to flow into the tubules, occluding them, while the tubules in control remained opened. Post abrasion, the tubules appear to be occluded in all groups. In conclusion, the experimental hybrid coatings were capable of reducing dentin permeability after treatment. They were also able to resist to erosive and abrasive challenges, with the advantage of forming thinner and colorless films that can be potentially used to treat dentin hypersensitivity.

Semi fluorinated polymers as surface energy controlled layers for liquid crystal alignment

Effect of surface compositional heterogeneities and microphase segregation of fluorinated amphiphilic copolymers on antifouling performance

In this paper, a series of fluorinated amphiphilic copolymers composed of 2-perfluorooctylethyl methacrylate (FMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) monomers were prepared, and their surface properties and antifouling performance were investigated. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) and human plasma fibrinogen (HFg) were used as model proteins to study protein adsorption onto the fluorinated amphiphilic surfaces. All the fluorinated amphiphilic surfaces exhibit excellent resistant performance of protein adsorption measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The surface compositional heterogeneities on the molecular scale play an important role in the antifouling properties. It was found that the copolymers exhibited better antifouling properties than the corresponding homopolymers did, when the percentage of hydrophilic hydroxyl groups is from 4% to 7% and the percentage of hydrophobic fluorinated moieties is from 4% to 14% on the surface. In addition, the protein molecular size scale and the pattern of microphase segregation domains on the surface strongly affect the protein adsorption behaviors. These results demonstrate the desirable protein-resistant performance from the fluorinated amphiphilic copolymers and provide deeper insight of the effect of surface compositional heterogeneity and microphase segregation on the protein adsorption behaviors.

Attenuating the size and molecular carrier capabilities of polyacrylate nanoparticles by a hydrophobic fluorine effect

This study investigates the effect of introducing alkyl chain fluorination on the properties of polyacrylate nanoparticles prepared in aqueous solution by emulsion polymerization. For this, 2,2,3,3,4,4,4-heptafluorobutyl acrylate (1) and methyl trifluoroacrylate (2) were tested as monomers as a means to prepare fluorinated polyacrylate nanoparticles to evaluate how side chain fluorination may affect nanoparticle size and drug carrier properties. Our results show that as fluorine content within the polyacrylate matrix increases, the size of the nanoparticle systematically diminishes, from 45 nm (for nanoparticles containing no fluoroacrylate) to ~7 nm (for nanoparticles constructed solely of fluoroacrylate). We also observe that as fluoroacrylate content and hydrophobicity increases, the nanoparticles decrease their ability to incorporate lipophilic molecules during the process of emulsification. These findings have meaningful implications in the implementation of fluorinated nanoparticles in molecular delivery.

The composition of enamel salivary films is different from the ones formed on dental materials

This study utilized two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2DE) to illustrate the compositional differences between in vitro salivary conditioning films (denoted pellicles) formed on human enamel as well as on the dental materials titanium and poly(methyl methacrylate). The salivary pellicles were formed by immersing each surface in individual tubes containing small volumes of freshly collected whole saliva. Saliva remaining in the tubes after the pellicle formation for 2 h was visualized by means of 2DE and silver staining. The results showed that the protein patterns in 2DE of the liquid phase of saliva left after the exposure to the respective surfaces, regarding proteins <100 kDa in size, were different depending on the surface used. Several protein groups and/or individual proteins were shown to be distinct for each surface used.

Fluoropolymers as low-surface-energy tooth coatings for oral care

A range of low-surface-energy fluoropolymers has been synthesised and their effectiveness as dental-care coatings for plaque, stain and erosion prevention has been evaluated using a series of oral care models employing pressed discs of calcium hydroxyapatite or sections of human teeth. Since the blocking of dentinal tubules is a key mechanistic strategy in the treatment of dentine hypersensitivity, the capability of these non-permanent fluoropolymer coatings to occlude the pore structure of human dentine and to reduce the outward flow of simulated dentinal fluid has also been investigated. Several of the fluoropolymer coatings have been found to inhibit bacterial adhesion but no correlation has been established between anti-adhesion efficacy and fluorine content or surface energy. All the fluoropolymers have been seen to reduce stain uptake by pellicle-coated HA discs, with homopolymers being considerably more effective than copolymers. Some fluoropolymer coatings have also been shown to inhibit the acid demineralisation of hydroxyapatite discs and to reduce dentine permeability. Coatings of the 2:1 copolymer of 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyl acrylate and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate are most promising, exhibiting significant anti-adhesion and anti-erosion efficacy and reducing dentine permeability to a level that is comparable with that achieved with the standard treatment employed in commercial anti-sensitivity formulations.
