Electronic-ionic bi-functional conduction β-Li3PS4-coated graphene hollow spheres as a highly stable lithium metal anode skeleton

Although Li metal is considered the most potential anode for Li based batteries, the repeatedly large volume variation and low Coulombic efficiency (CE) are still serious challenges for commercial application. Herein, the interconnect closed hollow graphene spheres with electronic-ionic bi-functional conduction network containing Li4.4Sn nanoparticles loaded internally and β-Li3PS4 solid electrolyte layer coated externally (β-LPS/SG/Li4.4Sn) is proposed to achieve uniform and dense Li deposition. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation and experimental results show that Li4.4Sn owns larger Li binding energy and lower nucleation overpotential than spherical graphene (SG), thus being able to guide Li traversing and depositing inside the hollow spheres. The Tafel curves, Li+ diffusion activation energy and experimental results reveal that the β-Li3PS4 coating layer significantly improves the ionic conductivity of the negative skeleton, covers the defect sites on the SG surface, provides continuous ion transmission channels and accelerates Li+ migration rate. The synergy of both can inhibit the formation of dendritic Li and reduce side reaction between freshly deposited lithium and the organic electrolyte. It's found that Li is preferentially deposited within the SG, evenly deposited on the spherical shell surface until it's completely filled to obtain a dense lithium layer without tip effect. As a result, the β-LPS/SG/Li4.4Sn anode exhibits a long life of up to 2800 h, an extremely low overpotential (∼13 mV) and a high CE of 99.8 % after 470 cycles. The LiFePO4-based full cell runs stably with a high capacity retention of 86.93 % after 800 cycles at 1C. It is considered that the novel structure design of Li anode skeleton with electron-ionic bi-functional conduction is a promising direction to construct long-term stable lithium metal anodes.

Renewed spectroscopic and theoretical research of hydrogen bonding in ascorbic acid

The studies of two isomers of ascorbic acid and their deuteroanalogues, presented in the paper, have been accomplished by vibrational spectroscopy methods and quantum-chemical simulations. The spectroscopic research of L-ascorbic and D-isoascorbic acids have been carried out by the infrared (IR) and Raman (R) techniques. On the basis of the obtained results the spectral interpretation of the hydrogen bonded groups of ascorbic acids has been performed. Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics (CPMD) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) have been employed to support spectroscopic experimental findings and shed light onto the bridged proton dynamics in the L- and D- isomers of ascorbic acids. The accurate assignments of the hydrogen bond modes have been accomplished with the application of deuterosubstitution, CPMD-solid state simulations and Potential Energy Distribution (PED) analysis. The spectral and structural results have shown that dependency ν(OH) = f(γ(OH)) is the most common for the OHO hydrogen bond, whereas dependency d(OO) = f(γ(OH)) differs as for the ionic and resonance assisted hydrogen bonds.

Ultrathin cobalt-based nanosheets containing surface oxygen promoted near-complete nitrate removal

Electrocatalytic nitrate removal offers a sustainable approach to alleviate nitrate pollution and to boost the anthropogenic nitrogen cycle, but it still suffers from limited removal efficiency at high rates, especially at low levels of nitrate. Herein, we report the near-complete removal of low-level nitrate (10-200 ppm) within 2 h using ultrathin cobalt-based nanosheets (CoNS) containing surface oxygen, which was fabricated from in-situ electrochemical reconstruction of conventional nanosheets. The average nitrate removal of 99.7 % with ammonia selectivity of 98.2 % in 9 cyclic runs ranked in the best of reported catalysts. Powered by a solar cell under the winter sun, the full-cell nitrate electrolysis system, equipped with ultrathin CoNS, achieved 100 % nitrogen gas selectivity and 99.6 % total nitrogen removal. The in-situ Fourier Transform Infrared included experiments and theoretical computations revealed that in-situ electrochemical reconstruction not only increased electrochemical active surface area but also constructed surface oxygen in active sites, leading to enhanced stabilization of nitrate adsorption in a symmetry breaking configuration and charge transfer, contributing to near-complete nitrate removal on ultrathin CoNS. This work provides a strategy to design ultrathin nanocatalysts for nitrate removal.

Solid-state vibrational circular dichroism for pharmaceutical applications: Polymorphs and cocrystal of sofosbuvir

X-ray diffraction is a commonly used technique in the pharmaceutical industry for the determination of the atomic and molecular structure of crystals. However, it is costly, sometimes time-consuming, and it requires a considerable degree of expertise. Vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectroscopy resolves these limitations, while also exhibiting substantial sensitivity to subtle modifications in the conformation and molecular packaging in the solid state. This study showcases VCD's ability to differentiate between various crystal structures of the same molecule (polymorphs, cocrystals). We examined the most effective approach for producing high-quality spectra and unveiled the intricate link between structure and spectrum via quantum-chemical computations. We rigorously assessed, using alanine as a model compound, multiple experimental conditions on the resulting VCD spectra, with the aim of proposing an optimal and efficient procedure. The proposed approach, which yields reliable, reproducible, and artifact-free results with maximal signal-to-noise ratio, was then validated using a set comprising of three amino acids (serine, alanine, tyrosine), one hydroxy acid (tartaric acid), and a monosaccharide (ribose) to mimic active pharmaceutical components. Finally, the optimized approach was applied to distinguish three polymorphs of the antiviral drug sofosbuvir and its cocrystal with piperazine. Our results indicate that solid-state VCD is a prompt, cost-effective, and easy-to-use technique to identify crystal structures, demonstrating potential for application in pharmaceuticals. We also adapted the cluster and transfer approach to calculate the spectral properties of molecules in a periodic crystal environment. Our findings demonstrate that this approach reliably produces solid-state VCD spectra of model compounds. Although for large molecules with many atoms per unit cell, such as sofosbuvir, this approach has to be simplified and provides only a qualitative match, spectral calculations, and energy analysis helped us to decipher the observed differences in the experimental spectra of sofosbuvir.

Improving Microcystis aeruginosa removal efficiency through enhanced sonosensitivity of nitrogen-doped nanodiamonds

Traditional methods for algae removal in drinking water treatment, such as coagulation and sedimentation, face challenges due to the negative charge on algae cells' surfaces, resulting in ineffective removal. Ultrasonic cavitation has shown promise in enhancing coagulation performance by disrupting extracellular polymer structures and improving cyanobacteria removal through various mechanisms like shear force and free radical reactions. However, the short lifespan and limited mass transfer distance of free radicals in conventional ultrasonic treatment lead to high energy consumption, limiting widespread application. To overcome these limitations and enhance energy efficiency, advanced carbon-based materials were developed and tested. Nitrogen-doped functional groups on nanodiamond surfaces were found to boost sonosensitivity by increasing the production of reactive oxygen species at the sonosensitizer-water interface. Utilizing low-power ultrasound (0.12 W/mL) in combination with N-ND treatment for 5 min, removal rates of Microcystis aeruginosa cells in water exceeded 90 %, with enhanced removal of algal organic matters and microcystins in water. Visualization through confocal microscopy highlighted the role of positively charged nitrogen-doped nanodiamonds in aggregating algae cells. The synergy between cell capturing and catalysis of N-ND indicates that efficient mass transfer of free radicals from the sonosensitizer's surface to the microalgae's surface is critical for promoting cyanobacteria floc formation. This study underscores the potential of employing a low-intensity ultrasound and N-ND system in effectively improving algae removal in water treatment processes.

Evaluation of the antitumor activity of albendazole using Langmuir-Blodgett monolayers as surface mediated drug delivery system

This study demonstrates the application of Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett films as biomimetic drug reservoirs and delivery systems to investigate the effect of an anthelmintic on cancer cell culture. The repurposing of benzimidazole anthelmintics for cancer therapy due to their microtubule-inhibiting properties has gained attention, showing promising anticancer effects and tumor-suppressive properties. Although widely used in medicine, the low aqueous solubility of benzimidazole compounds poses challenges for studying their effects on cancer cells, requiring incorporation into various formulations. Our study demonstrates that incorporating albendazole into stable Palmitic Acid Langmuir monolayers, forming Langmuir-Blodgett films, significantly affects the proliferation of liver carcinoma cells. This report presents the initial findings of the effect of an antitumoral drug on cancer cell culture using a simple and repeatable methodology.

Proton Transport Scenarios in Sulfuric Acid Explored via Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations

Sulfuric acid (H2SO4), a highly reactive reagent containing intrinsic protonic charge carriers, has been studied via ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, we explore the solvation shell structure of the protonic defects, H1SO4- and H3SO4+, as well as the underlying proton transport mechanisms in both the neat and hydrated H2SO4 solutions. Our findings reveal a significant contraction of the dynamic hydrogen-bonded network around the protonic defects, which resembles features seen in water. The simulations provide estimates of the structural relaxation time scales for proton release from both the covalent O-H bonds (∼23 ps) and the hydrogen bonds (∼0.4 ps). In contrast to water, our analysis of the proton transfer scenarios in sulfuric acid reveals correlated events mediated by the formation of longer (up to four) hydrogen-bonded Grotthuss chains.

Regulating the electronic properties, quantum capacitance and photocatalytic activity of Sc2CO2 based on Y doping and strain

The doping of transition metals can effectively modulate the electronic structures and enhance the photocatalytic activity of MXenes. The electronic and photocatalytic properties, as well as the quantum capacitance of Sc2CO2-Y under biaxial strain, were studied by density functional theory. Sc2CO2-Y is a direct semiconductor and keeps its semiconductor character under strain. Sc2CO2-Y under tensile strain has higher photocatalytic activity than under compressive strain. In particular, Sc2CO2-Y at 2% strain has the slowest recombination rate of electrons and holes because of the largest . Sc2CO2-Y under strain is a potential cathode material. Its large potential keeps the character of cathode materials for Sc2CO2-Y under strain. Sc2CO2-Y under tensile strain has better conductivity, especially under 5% strain, due to having the largest Re (ε0). Sc2CO2-Y under strain can perform the HER, but fails to perform the OER at pH = 0, and tensile strain increases the reduction capacity of Sc2CO2-Y. Under strains from -2% to 2%, Sc2CO2-Y can perform the OER in an alkaline environment. Sc2CO2-Y is a good CO2 photocatalyst in acidic environments; the increase of pH value weakens the N2 reducing capacity of Sc2CO2-Y under strain. Its work function, charge transfer and optical properties are also explored.

Synthesis of Low-Symmetric α-Cobalt(II) Hydroxide-Incorporated Cyanuric Acid Layers with High Néel Temperature and Large Coercivity: Structure and Magnetism

α-Cobalt(II) (CoII) hydroxide (compound 1) incorporating cyanuric acid layers was synthesized via the solvothermal method. 1 exhibited two distinct characteristics, which were different from reported α-CoII hydroxides. (i) The presence of abundant consecutive hydrogen bonds between the adjacent hydroxide layers enhanced the driving force of crystallization along the direction of the c axis. Thus, 1 revealed high crystallinity without the disorder phenomenon. (ii) 1 showed low symmetry. The configuration of CoTd sites did not follow the regular triangular net. The low symmetry favored the magnetic anisotropy. Thus, 1 revealed ferrimagnetic behavior with a high Néel temperature (TN = 56.8 K) and coercivity (Hc = 36 kOe at 2 K). The ferrimagnetic behavior of 1 was validated via the Hubbard U correction density functional theory.

Electrical contact property and control effects for stable T(H)-TaS2/C3B metal-semiconductor heterojunctions

Metal-semiconductor heterojunctions are the basis for developing new electronic devices. Here, T(H)-TaS2/C3B metal-semiconductor heterostructures are constructed by different phase T- and H-TaS2 monolayers combined with the C3B monolayer. The calculated corrected binding energies, phonon band structures, elastic constants, and molecular dynamics simulations indicated that both heterojunctions are highly stable, meaning that T(H)-TaS2/C3B heterojunctions possibly exist in experiments. The electronic property calculations showed that the intrinsic T(H)-TaS2/C3B heterojunction is an n(p)-type Schottky contact with a low Schottky barrier height (SBH), which is very important for the design of high-performance field-effect transistors. The electronic properties of the T(H)-TaS2/C3B heterojunctions can be controlled by varying the vertical strain and external electric field; however, the strain only resulted in a small change in the heterojunction SBH. Nevertheless, under external electrical field control, the T-TaS2/C3B heterojunction could manage a transition from an n-type Schottky contact to an n-type Ohmic contact and the H-TaS2/C3B heterojunction could be altered from a p-type Schottky contact to a p-type Ohmic contact. These findings provide theoretical insights into the electronic and electrical contact properties of the T(H)-TaS2/C3B heterojunction, which could be beneficial for developing n-type MOS and p-type MOS transistors.

Extensive reference set and refined computational protocol for calculations of 57Fe Mössbauer parameters

Mössbauer spectroscopy is a powerful technique for probing the local electronic structure of iron compounds, because it reports in an element-selective manner on both the oxidation state and coordination environment of the Fe ion. Computational prediction of the two main Mössbauer parameters, isomer shift (δ) and quadrupole splitting (ΔEQ), has long been targeted by quantum chemical studies, and useful protocols based on density functional theory have been proposed. Here we present an extensive curated reference set of Fe compounds that is considerably larger and more diverse than literature precedents. We make a distinction between low-temperature and high-temperature experimental subgroups. This set is employed for optimizing a refined computational protocol utilizing the scalar version of the exact 2-component (X2C) Hamiltonian with the finite nucleus approximation. Attention is devoted to having an accurate and flexible all-electron basis set for Fe. We assess the performance of several DFT methods that cover all representative families and rungs of functionals and find that hybrid functionals with ca. 25-30% exact exchange offer the best accuracy for isomer shifts. The work establishes a refined general protocol of wide applicability that achieves good performance for the prediction of isomer shifts in a wider variety of systems than before, but the limitations of DFT for quadrupole splittings are also highlighted. Finally, comparison of calculated values with high-temperature experimental results shows that the use of an empirical correction factor is required to account for the second-order Doppler shift and to achieve the same quality of correlation as with the low-temperature data.

Computational screening of pyrazine-based graphene-supported transition metals as single-atom catalysts for the nitrogen reduction reaction

Electrochemical synthesis of NH3 from N2 utilizing single-atom catalysts (SACs) is a promising strategy for industrial nitrogen fixation and chemical raw material production. In this work, single transition metals (TMs) anchored on pyrazine-based graphene (TM@py-GY) are systematically studied to screen potential electrocatalysts for the nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) using first-principles calculations. Particularly, the descriptor φ related to electronegativity and valence electron number is selected to clarify the trend of NRR activity, realizing a fast-scan/estimation among various candidates. After a four-step screening process, WI@py-GY and MoII@py-GY SACs are screened with good structural stability, high selectivity, and high activity. Meanwhile, the thermodynamic stability of WI@py-GY and MoII@py-GY SACs is demonstrated to ensure their feasibility in real experimental conditions. Furthermore, electronic properties are also examined in detail to analyze activity origin. This work not only provides an effective and reliable method for screening electrochemical NRR catalysts with excellent performance but also provides guidance for the rational design of SACs.

Exploring the characteristic "plug-in" configuration of an adsorbed starburst molecule

In this study, the adsorption of starburst molecules (C57H48N4, SBM) deposited on Au(111) was investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). SBM molecules selectively adsorb on the face-centered-cubic regions of Au(111) in quasi one-dimensional chains. Compared with the SBM structure on hBN/Rh(111), the assembly structure of SBM on Au(111) can be clearly confirmed to be molecular chains in the "plug-in" configuration. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) revealed that the interaction between SBM molecules and Au(111) induces the modification of the molecular electronic states. The STS mapping further revealed a continuous 1D electronic state concentrated at the center of the SBM molecular chains.

Cuprophilic Interactions in Polymeric [Cu10O2(Mes)6]n

The properties of cuprophilic compounds and the underlying fundamental principles responsible for the Cu(I)···Cu(I) interactions have been the subject of intense research as their diverse structural and physical attributes are being explored. In this light, we performed a new study of the compound [Cu10O2(Mes)6] reported by Haakansson et al. using state of the art experimental and theoretical analysis techniques. Doing this, we found the compound to be a polymer in the solid state, best written as [Cu10O2(Mes)6]n, with unsupported Cu(I)···Cu(I) contacts linking the monomers (2.776 Å). The monomeric unit also exhibits various cuprophilic contacts bridged by mesityl and/or oxo ligands. The compound was analyzed in its solid state, revealing luminescent properties resulting from two distinct fluorescent emissions, as well as in solution, in which its polymeric structure reversibly decomposes. A quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) analysis based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations allows to characterize the various Cu(I)···Cu(I) contacts, in which only a few, and not necessarily the shortest, are associated with a bond critical point. Additionally, an energy decomposition analysis of the bonding between monomers indicates that it is dominated by dispersion forces in which the ligands play a dominant role, resulting in bonding energies significantly larger than found in previous DFT investigations based on less bulky models.

Exploring the Polymorphism of Dicalcium Silicates Using Transfer Learning Enhanced Machine Learning Atomic Potentials

Belitic cements are a greener alternative to Ordinary Portland Cement due to the lower CO2 associated with their production. However, their low reactivity with water is currently a drawback, resulting in longer setting times. In this study, we utilize a combination of evolutionary algorithms and machine learning atomic potentials (MLPs) to identify previously unreported belite polymorphs that may exhibit higher hydraulic reactivity than the known phases. To address the high computational demand of this methodology, we propose a novel transfer learning approach for generating MLPs. First, the models are pretrained on a large set of classical data (ReaxFF) and then retrained with density functional theory (DFT) data. We demonstrate that the transfer learning enhanced potentials exhibit higher accuracy, require less training data, and are more transferable than those trained exclusively on DFT data. The generated machine learning potential enables a fast, exhaustive, and reliable exploration of the dicalcium silicate polymorphs. This includes studying their stability through phonon analysis and calculating their structural and elastic properties. Overall, we identify ten new belite polymorphs within the energy range of the existing ones, including a layered phase with potentially high reactivity.

Image of the solid-state rotary motion encoded in the dielectric response

The future development of advanced molecular systems with controlled rotation requires the development of an effective methodology for assessing the rotational performance of artificial machine components. We identified two patterns of the dielectric behavior for polar rotators in a static non-polar framework of sizable crystal showing relations between the spectral and molecular-level features of solid-state rotary motion. Various functionalization of phenylene rotors with a fluorine atom(s) changed rotational performance from high to low with rotational barriers ranging from 6.06 to 11.84 kcal mol-1. The meta-F-substitution favored rotator-rotator contacts allowing for the implementation of fast rotary motion. Contrary, the presence of rotator-stator contacts inhibited independent rotator dynamics leading to opposite spectral behavior in terms of temperature evolution of loss peak amplitude. Our observations, supported by an analysis based on an asymmetric double well-potential model, show that easily noticeable spectral differences encoded some molecular-level information important for the implementation of rotary motion.

Understanding Ligand Effects on Bielectronic Transitions: Chemo- and Electroreduction of Rhodium Bis(Diphosphine) Complexes to Low Oxidation States

Rhodium complexes in the -I and 0 oxidation states are of great potential interest in catalytic applications. In contrast to their rhodium +I congeners, however, the structural and electronic parameters governing their access and stability are far less understood. Herein, we investigate the two-electron reduction of a parameterized series of bis(diphosphine) Rh complexes [Rh(dxpy)2]NTf2 (x=P-substituent, y=alkanediyl bridging P atoms). Through (electro)reductions from the RhI parents, Rh-I d10-complexes were obtained and characterized spectroscopically, including 103Rh NMR data. The reductive steps convolute with structural rearrangements from square planar to tetrahedral coordination. We found that the extent of these reorganisations defines whether the first E0(RhI/0) and second E0(Rh0/-I) reduction potentials are normally ordered, leading to monoelectronic stepwise transitions, or inverted, giving bielectronic events. Reductionist approaches based on Hammett parameters or the P-Rh-P bite angles provide only partial correlations with the redox potentials. However, we identified the C-O stretch of analogue diphosphine complexes as an expedient computational parameter that enables these correlations through both electronic and geometric features, even in a predictive manner. Gaining control over two-electron reduction behaviors through rationalized ligand effects has potential impact beyond Rh complexes, for molecular and enzymatic metal sites commonly exhibiting bielectronic transitions.

Developing and Benchmarking Sulfate and Sulfamate Force Field Parameters via Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations To Accurately Model Glycosaminoglycan Electrostatic Interactions

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) are negatively charged polysaccharides found on cell surfaces, where they regulate transport pathways of foreign molecules toward the cell. The structural and functional diversity of GAGs is largely attributed to varied sulfation patterns along the polymer chains, which makes understanding their molecular recognition mechanisms crucial. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, thanks to their unmatched microscopic resolution, have the potential to be a reference tool for exploring the patterns responsible for biologically relevant interactions. However, the capability of molecular dynamics force fields used in biosimulations to accurately capture sulfation-specific interactions is not well established, partly due to the intrinsic properties of GAGs that pose challenges for most experimental techniques. In this work, we evaluate the performance of molecular dynamics force fields for sulfated GAGs by studying ion pairing of Ca2+ to sulfated moieties─N-methylsulfamate and methylsulfate─that resemble N- and O-sulfation found in GAGs, respectively. We tested available nonpolarizable (CHARMM36 and GLYCAM06) and explicitly polarizable (Drude and AMOEBA) force fields, and derived new implicitly polarizable models through charge scaling (prosECCo75 and GLYCAM-ECC75) that are consistent with our developed "charge-scaling" framework. The calcium-sulfamate/sulfate interaction free energy profiles obtained with the tested force fields were compared against reference ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations, which serve as a robust alternative to experiments. AIMD simulations indicate that the preferential Ca2+ binding mode to sulfated GAG groups is solvent-shared pairing. Only our scaled-charge models agree satisfactorily with the AIMD data, while all other force fields exhibit poorer agreement, sometimes even qualitatively. Surprisingly, even explicitly polarizable force fields display a notable disagreement with the AIMD data, likely attributed to difficulties in their optimization and possible inherent limitations in depicting high-charge-density ion interactions accurately. Finally, the underperforming force fields lead to unrealistic aggregation of sulfated saccharides, which qualitatively disagrees with our understanding of the soft glycocalyx environment. Our results highlight the importance of accurately treating electronic polarization in MD simulations of sulfated GAGs and caution against over-reliance on currently available models without thorough validation and optimization.

Photoisomerization mechanism of iminoguanidinium receptors from spectroscopic methods and quantum chemical calculations

The hydrazone functional group, when coupled with a pyridyl substituent, offers a unique class of widely tunable photoswitches, whose E-to-Z photoisomerization equilibria can be controlled through intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the N-H hydrazone donor and the pyridyl acceptor. However, little is known about the photoisomerization mechanism in this class of compounds. To address this issue, we report a pyridine-appended iminoguanidinium photoswitch that is functionally related to acylhydrazones and provides insight into the photoisomerization processes between the E and Z configurations. The E-to-Z photoisomerization of the E-2-pyridyl-iminoguanidinium cation (2PyMIG) in DMSO, prepared as the bromide salt, was quantified by 1H NMR, and probed in real time with ultrafast laser spectroscopy. The photoisomerization process occurs on a picosecond timescale, resulting in low fluorescence yields. The multiconfigurational reaction path found with the growing string method features a small barrier (4.3 or 6.5 kcal mol-1) that the E isomer in the π-π* state must overcome to reach the minimum energy conical intersection (MECI) connecting the E and Z isomers of 2PyMIG. While two possible pathways exist depending on the orientation of the pyridine ring, both exhibit the same qualitative features along the path and at their MECIs, involving simultaneous changes in the CCNN and CNNC dihedral angles. Furthermore, the ground state barrier for pyridine ring rotation is readily accessible, thus a low barrier pathway to the experimentally observed Z isomer exists for both MECIs leading to a transition from the E isomer to photoproduct. Combining multiconfigurational reaction path calculations using growing string method with time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy provided crucial insights into the photoisomerization process of 2PyMIG, resulting in both the computational and experimental results pointing to rapid photoisomerization via a surface crossing between the singlet π-π* and the ground states.

Monolayer SnS2 Schottky barrier field effect transistors: effects of electrodes

Achieving Ohmic contacts with low resistance is quite desirable for two-dimensional (2D) Schottky barrier field effect transistors (SBFETs). We verify the electrode effect on monolayer (ML) SnS2 SBFETs using ab initio calculations. With the aforeselected ML electrodes from matching lattices and work functions, we obtain n-type Ohmic contacts or quasi-Ohmic contacts to ML SnS2 with ML 1T-NbTe2, Sc2NF2, Mo2NF2, Nb2CF2, and graphene electrodes. The n-type ML SnS2 SBFET with the Ohmic-contact 1T-NbTe2 electrode exhibits remarkably better device performance than that with a Schottky-contact 2H-NbTe2 electrode, and their on-state currents of 629/1048 μA μm-1, delay times of 0.236/0.169 ps, and power dissipations of 0.074/0.089 fJ μm-1 exceed the International Roadmap for Devices and Systems targets for low-power/high-performance application. This study reports on Ohmic-contact electrodes for n-type ML SnS2 SBFETs and can give hints for future theoretical and experimental studies on 2D SBFETs.

Tuning the Schottky barrier height in single- and bi-layer graphene-inserted MoS2/metal contacts

First-principle calculations based on density functional theory are employed to investigate the impact of graphene insertion on the electronic properties and Schottky barrier of MoS2/metals (Mg, Al, In, Cu, Ag, Au, Pd, Ti, and Sc) without deteriorating the intrinsic properties of the MoS2 layer. The results reveal that the charge transfer mainly occurs at the interface between the graphene and metal layers, with smaller transfer at the interface between bi-layer garphene or between graphene and MoS2. And the tunneling barrier exists at the interface between graphene and MoS2, which hinders electron injection from graphene to MoS2. Importantly, the Schottky barrier height ( Φ SB,N ) decreases upon graphene insertion into MoS2/metal contacts. Specifically, for single-layer graphene, the Φ SB,N of MoS2 contacted with Mg, In, Sc, and Ti are - 0.116 eV, - 0.116 eV, - 0.014 eV, and - 0.116 eV, respectively. Furthermore, with bilayer graphene, when by inserting bi-layer graphene, the negative n-type Schottky barrier of - 0.086 eV, - 0.114 eV, - 0.059 eV, - 0.008 eV, and - 0.0636 eV are observed for MoS2 contacted with the respective metals, respectively. These findings provide a practical guidance for developing and designing high-performance transition metal dichalcogenide nanoelectronic devices.

Ambient-pressure alkoxycarbonylation for sustainable synthesis of ester

Alkoxycarbonylation reactions are common in the chemical industry, yet process sustainability is limited by the inefficient utilization of CO. In this study, we address this issue and demonstrate that significant improvements can be achieved by adopting a heterogeneously catalyzed process, using a Ru/NbOx catalyst. The Ru/NbOx catalyst enables the direct synthesis of methyl propionate, a key industrial commodity, with over 98% selectivity from CO, ethylene and methanol, without any ligands or acid/base promoters. Under ambient CO pressure, a high CO utilization efficiency (336 mmolestermolCO-1h-1) is achieved. Mechanistic investigations reveal that CO undergoes a methoxycarbonyl (COOCH3) intermediate pathway, attacking the terminal carbon atom of alkene and yielding linear esters. The origins of prevailing linear regioselectivity in esters are revealed. The infrared spectroscopic feature of the key COOCH3 species is observed at 1750 cm-1 (C=O vibration) both experimentally and computationally. The broad substrate applicability of Ru/NbOx catalyst for ester production is demonstrated. This process offers a sustainable and efficient approach with high CO utilization and atom economy for the synthesis of esters.

Borohydride Compounds Catalyze the Selective 4e- Reduction of CO2 with 9-BBN

The selective double hydroboration of CO2 into bis(boryl)acetal (BBA) is a challenging yet appealing reduction process since BBA can be used as a versatile C1 and Cn sources for the synthesis of value-added products. In the present study, we demonstrate that simple borohydride compounds are efficient and selective catalysts for the synthesis of BBA when using 9-borabicyclo(3.3.1)nonane (9-BBN) as a reductant. The experimental and theoretical investigations show that while the borohydride species catalyzes the first reduction step of CO2 into formoxyborane (2e- reduction intermediate), the observed 4e- reduction selectivity is mostly due to the ability of 9-BBN to reduce the formoxyborane into BBA without a catalyst. Notably, 0.2 mol % of LiH2BBN catalyzed the hydroboration of CO2 with 9-BBN as a reductant into the corresponding BBA in 77% yield with TON and TOF of 385 and 196 h-1, respectively. The simplicity of borohydride contrasts with the more elaborate catalytic systems used so far for the 4e- reduction of CO2.

Membrane Stabilization of Helical Previtamin D Conformers as Possible Enhancement of Vitamin D Photoproduction

Photoinduced vitamin D formation occurs 10-15-fold faster in phospholipid bilayers (PLB) than in isotropic solution. It has been hypothesized that amphipatic interactions of the PLB with the rotationally flexible previtamin D (Pre) stabilize its helical conformers, enhancing thermal intramolecular [1,7]-hydrogen transfer, forming vitamin D. To test this hypothesis, we carried out molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of Pre in a PLB composed of dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC). We designed a classical force field capable of accurately describing the equilibrium composition of Pre conformers. Using adaptive biasing force MD simulations, we determined the free energy of Pre conformers in isotropic environments (hexane and gas-phase) and in the anisotropic environment of a DPPC PLB. We find a total increase of 25.5% of the population of both helical conformers (+20.5% g+Zg+ and +5% g-Zg-) in DPPC compared to hexane. In view of ab initio simulations, showing that hydrogen transfer occurs in both helical conformers, our study strongly suggests the validity of the initial hypothesis. Regarding the amphipatic interactions of Pre with the PLB, we find that, similar to cholesterol (Chol) and 7-dehydrocholesterol (7-DHC), Pre entertains hydrogen bonds mainly to the carbonyl groups of DPPC and, to a lesser extent, with phosphate oxygen atoms and rarely to water molecules at the interface. We further report order parameters of the Pre/DPPC system, which are slightly smaller than those for Chol/DPPC and 7-DHC/DPPC, but larger than for pure DPPC. This indicates a loss in membrane viscosity upon photochemical ring-opening of 7-DHC to form Pre.

Liquid metal interface mechanochemistry disentangles energy density and biaxial stretchability tradeoff in composite capacitor film

Dielectric polymer composites for film capacitors have advanced significantly in recent decades, yet their practical implementation in industrial-scale, thin-film processing faces challenges, particularly due to limited biaxial stretchability. Here, we introduce a mechanochemical solution that applies liquid metal onto rigid dielectric fillers (e.g. boron nitride), dramatically transforming polymer-filler interface characteristics. This approach significantly reduces modulus mismatch and stress concentration at the interface region, enabling polypropylene composites to achieve biaxial stretching ratio up to 450 × 450%. Furthermore, liquid metal integration enhances boron nitride's dielectric polarization while maintaining inherent insulation, producing high-dielectric-constant, low-loss films. These films, only microns thick yet quasi square meters in area, achieve a 55% increase in energy density over commercial biaxially-oriented polypropylene (from 2.9 to 4.5 J cm-3 at 550 MV/m), keeping 90% discharge efficiency. Coupled with improved thermal conductivity, durability, and device capacitance, this distinctive interface engineering approach makes these composites promising for high-performance film capacitors.

Carbon-Fluorine Activation in the Gas Phase: The Reactions of Benzyl C-F Bonds and Silyl Cations

The activation of C-F bonds figures largely in both fundamental and applied chemical processes. Herein the activation of benzyl C-F bonds by silyl cations is examined both computationally and experimentally in the gas phase. The experimental rate constant values obtained herein have not heretofore been measured and provide insight into the intrinsic ability of silyl cations to activate C-F bonds. Trends in reactivity and correlations between theoretical and experimental data are discussed in the context of C-F bond cleavage.

First-Principles Insights into the Selective Separation of MoS42- and WO42-: Crucial Role of Hydration Structures

The selective separation of MoS42- and WO42- using quaternary ammonium salt through solvent extraction or ion exchange methods has been well-established in the metallurgical industry. However, the conventional electrostatic adsorption theory falls short in explaining the separation mechanism. Through first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations and newly self-developed deep potential molecular dynamics (DPMD) simulation method, our work first reveals that the disparity in hydration structures of MoS42- and WO42- plays a crucial role in their selective separation. It is proposed that MoS42- and WO42- anions undergo hydration to form [MoS4(H2O)n]2- and [WO4(H2O)n]2-, respectively, facilitated by hydrogen bond (H-bond) interactions. Emphasis is placed on the discrepancy between MoS42- and WO42- in hydration structures by the hydration energy, Hirshfeld charge, evaluation of weak interactions, hydration radius, hydration coordination number, and H-bonds distribution. MoS42- presents a larger first hydration radius and a lower first hydration coordination number due to weaker interactions with H2O, while WO42- is subjected to enhanced hydration shielding, resulting in MoS42- anions being more susceptible to be selectively separated by a quaternary ammonium salt. This insight paves the way for the selective separation of MoS42- and WO42-, further bridging the gap between theory and industry applications.

ScSeI Monolayer for Photocatalytic Water Splitting

We theoretically identify the ScSeI monolayer as a promising new 2D material for photocatalysis through first-principles calculations. The most notable feature is the significant difference in carrier mobility, with electron mobility in the horizontal direction being 20.66 times higher than hole mobility, minimizing electron-hole recombination. The ScSeI monolayer exhibits a bandgap of 2.51 eV, with the valence band maximum at -6.37 eV and the conduction band minimum at -3.86 eV, meeting the requirements for water splitting. Phosphorus doping lowers the Gibbs free energy by 1.63 eV, enhancing the catalytic activity. The ScSeI monolayer achieves a hydrogen production efficiency of 17%, surpassing the commercial threshold of 10% and shows excellent mechanical, thermal, and dynamic stability, indicating feasibility for experimental synthesis and practical application. Additionally, the monolayer maintains its photocatalytic properties under tensile strain (-6% to 6%) and in aqueous environments, reinforcing its potential as an effective photocatalyst. Based on these findings, we believe the ScSeI monolayer is a highly promising photocatalyst.

Ruthenium complexes bearing nile red chromophore and one of its derivative: Theoretical evaluation of PDT-related properties

The outcomes of DFT-based calculations are here reported to assess the applicability of two synthesized polypyridyl Ru(II) complexes, bearing ethynyl nile red (NR) on a bpy ligand, and two analogues, bearing modified-NR, in photodynamic therapy. The absorption spectra, together with the non-radiative rate constants for the S1 - Tn intersystem crossing transitions, have been computed for this purpose. Calculations evidence that the structural modification on the chromophore destabilizes the HOMO of the complexes thus reducing the H-L gap and, consequently, red shifting the maximum absorption wavelength within the therapeutic window, up to 620 nm. Moreover, the favored ISC process from the bright state involves the triplet state closest in energy, which is also characterized by the highest SOC value and by the involvement of the whole bpy ligand bearing the chromophore in delocalising the unpaired electrons. These outcomes show that the photophysical behavior of the complexes is dominated by the chromophore.

Modeling Intermolecular Interactions with Exchange-Hole Dipole Moment Dispersion Corrections to Neural Network Potentials

Neural network potentials (NNPs) are an innovative approach for calculating the potential energy and forces of a chemical system. In principle, these methods are capable of modeling large systems with an accuracy approaching that of a high-level ab initio calculation, but with a much smaller computational cost. Due to their training to density-functional theory (DFT) data and neglect of long-range interactions, some classes of NNPs require an additional term to include London dispersion physics. In this Perspective, we discuss the requirements for a dispersion model for use with an NNP, focusing on the MLXDM (Machine Learned eXchange-Hole Dipole Moment) model developed by our groups. This model is based on the DFT-based XDM dispersion correction, which calculates interatomic dispersion coefficients in terms of atomic moments and polarizabilities, both of which can be approximated effectively using neural networks.

Giant Optical Anisotropy Induced by Magnetic Order in FePS3/WSe2 Heterostructures

Magnetic 2D materials offer a promising platform for manipulating quantum states at the nanoscale. Recent studies have underscored the significant influence of 2D magnetic materials on the optical behaviors of transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), revealing phenomena such as interlayer exciton-magnon interactions, magnetization-dependent valley polarization, and an enhanced Zeeman effect. However, the controlled manipulation of anisotropic optical properties in TMDs via magnetism remains challenging. Here, the magnetic ordering in FePS3 profoundly impacts the optical characteristics of WSe2, achieving a giant linear polarization degree of 5.1 in exciton emission is demonstrated. This is supported by a detailed analysis of low-temperature photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectra from nL-FePS3/WSe2 heterostructures. These findings indicate that a phase transition in FePS3 from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic enhances interlayer Coulomb interactions, inducing a transition from non-polar to polar behavior in the heterostructures. Additionally, valley-polarized PL spectra under magnetic fields from -9 to 9 T reveal the influence of FePS3 on valley polarization and Zeeman splitting of excitons in monolayer WSe2. These results present a novel strategy for tailoring the optoelectronic properties of 2D magnetic van der Waals heterostructures, paving the way for advancements in nanoscale device design.

A Novel Asymmetric Diffusion Path for Superior Ion Dynamic in High-Voltage Mg-Based Hybrid Batteries

Magnesium-based batteries have garnered significant attention due to their high energy density, excellent intrinsic safety, and low cost. However, the application process has been hindered by the high Mg2+ ions diffusion barrier in solid-state structures and solid-liquid interphase. To address this issue, a hybrid battery technology based on Mg anode and Fe-based Prussian Blue Analogue cathode doped with functional transition metal ions and N═O bonds is proposed. Combined multiscale experimental characterizations with theoretical calculations, the subtle lattice distortion can create an asymmetric diffusion path for the active ions, which enables reversible extraction with significantly reduced diffusion barriers achieved by synergistic doping. The optimized cathode exhibits a working potential of 2.3 V and an initial discharge capacity of 152 mAh g-1 at 50 mA g-1. With the preferred electrolyte combined with equivalent concentration [Mg2(µ-Cl)2(DME)4][AlCl4]2 and NaTFSI salt solution, the hybrid system demonstrates superior cycling performance over 200 cycles at a high current density of 200 mA g-1, maintaining ≈100% coulombic efficiency with superior ion dynamic. The findings are expected to be marked an important step in the further application of high-voltage cathodes for Mg-based hybrid batteries.

Electrical Contacts in Monolayer MoSi2N4 Transistors

The latest synthesized monolayer (ML) MoSi2N4 material exhibits stability in ambient conditions, suitable bandgap, and high mobilities. Its potential as a next-generation transistor channel material has been demonstrated through quantum transport simulations. However, in practical two-dimensional (2D) material transistors, the electrical contacts formed by the channel and the electrode must be optimized, as they are crucial for determining the efficiency of carrier injection. We employed the density functional theory (DFT) combined with the nonequilibrium Green's function (NEGF) method to systematically explore the vertical and horizontal interfaces between the typical metal electrodes and the ML MoSi2N4. The DFT+NEGF method incorporates the coupling between the electrode and the channel, which is crucial for quantum transport. Among these metals, Sc and Ti form n-type Ohmic contacts with zero tunneling barriers at both vertical and horizontal interfaces with ML MoSi2N4, making them optimal for contact metals. In-ML MoSi2N4 contacts display zero Schottky barriers but a 3.11 eV tunneling barrier. Cu and Au establish n-type Schottky contacts, while Pt forms a p-type contact. The Fermi pinning factors of the metal-ML MoSi2N4 contacts for both electrons and holes are above 0.51, much higher than the typical 2D semiconductors. Moreover, there is a strong positive correlation between the Fermi pinning factor and the band gap, with a Spearman rank correlation coefficient of 0.897 and a p-value below 0.001. Our work provides insight into the contact optimization for the ML MoSi2N4 transistors and highlights the promising potential of ML MoSi2N4 as the channel material for the next-generation FETs.

Conformational dependence of chemical shifts in the proline rich region of TAU protein

Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is an important method for structure elucidation of proteins, as it is an easily accessible and well understood method. To characterize intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) using computational models it is often necessary to analyze and integrate calculated observables with measurements derived from solution NMR experiments. In this case study, we investigate whether and which chemical shifts of the proline-rich region of Tau protein (residues 210-240) offer information about the conformational state to distinguish two different microscopic conformers. Using multiple computational methods, the chemical shifts of these two conformationally distinct structures are calculated. The different methods are compared regarding their ability to compute chemical shifts that are sensitive to conformational change. The analysis of the data shows significant differences between the available methods and gives suggestions for an improved pathway for ensemble reweighting. Nevertheless, the variation in the chemical shifts which are predicted for configurations that are commonly considered to belong to the same conformation is such that this obscures a comparison between distinct conformations. Conformational sensitivity is found for up to ∼26% of calculated chemical shifts. It is found to be unrelated to the atom element and has a minor relationship with the change in the corresponding ϕ dihedral angle.

Enter MnIV-NHC: A Dark Photooxidant with a Long-Lived Charge-Transfer Excited State

Detailed photophysical investigation of a Mn(IV)-carbene complex has revealed that excitation into its lowest-energy absorption band (∼500 nm) results in the formation of an energetic ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) state with a lifetime of 15 ns. To the best of our knowledge, this is the longest lifetime reported for charge-transfer states of first-row-based transition metal complexes in solution, barring those based on Cu, with a d10 configuration. A so-called superoxidant, Mn(IV)-carbene exhibits an excited state potential typically only harnessed via excited states of reactive organic radical species. Furthermore, the long-lived excited state in this case is found to be a dark doublet, with its transition to the quartet ground state being spin-forbidden, a contrast to most first-row literature examples, and a possible cause of the long lifetime. Showcasing excited state properties which in some cases exceed those of complexes based on precious metals, these findings not only advance the library of earth-abundant photosensitizers but also shed general insight into the photophysics of d3 and related Mn complexes.

Electronic and Structural Properties of Thin Iron Oxide Films on CeO2

Modification of CeO2 (ceria) with 3d transition metals, particularly iron, has been proven to significantly enhance its catalytic efficiency in oxidation or combustion reactions. Although this phenomenon is widely reported, the nature of the iron-ceria interaction responsible for this improvement remains debated. To address this issue, we prepared well-defined model FeOx/CeO2(111) catalytic systems and studied their structure and interfacial electronic properties using photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning tunneling microscopy, and low-energy electron diffraction, coupled with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Our results show that under ultrahigh vacuum conditions, Fe deposition leads to the formation of small FeOx clusters on the ceria surface. Subsequent annealing results in the growth of large amorphous FeOx particles and a 2D FeOx layer. Annealing in an oxygen-rich atmosphere further oxidizes iron up to the Fe3+ state and improves the crystallinity of both the 2D layer and the 3D particles. Our DFT calculations indicate that the 2D FeOx layer interacts strongly with the ceria surface, exhibiting structural corrugations and transferred electrons between Fe2+/Fe3+ and Ce4+/Ce3+ redox pairs. The novel 2D FeOx/CeO2(111) phase may explain the enhancement of the catalytic properties of CeO2 by iron. Moreover, the corrugated 2D FeOx layer can serve as a template for the ordered nucleation of other catalytically active metals, in which the redox properties of the 2D FeOx/CeO2(111) system are exploited to modulate the charge of the supported metals.

Disorder-Dependent Li Diffusion in Li6PS5Cl Investigated by Machine-Learning Potential

Solid-state electrolytes with argyrodite structures, such as Li6PS5Cl, have attracted considerable attention due to their superior safety compared to liquid electrolytes and higher ionic conductivity than other solid electrolytes. Although experimental efforts have been made to enhance conductivity by controlling the degree of disorder, the underlying diffusion mechanism is not yet fully understood. Moreover, existing theoretical analyses based on ab initio molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have limitations in addressing various types of disorder at room temperature. In this study, we directly investigate Li-ion diffusion in Li6PS5Cl at 300 K using large-scale, long-term MD simulations empowered by machine-learning potentials (MLPs). To ensure the convergence of conductivity values within an error range of 10%, we employ a 25 ns simulation using a 5 × 5 × 5 supercell containing 6500 atoms. The computed Li-ion conductivity, activation energies, and equilibrium site occupancies align well with experimental observations. Notably, Li-ion conductivity peaks when Cl ions occupy 25% of the 4c sites rather than at 50% where the disorder is maximized. In addition, Li-ion diffusion shows non-Arrhenius behavior, leading to different activation energies at high temperatures (>400 K). These phenomena are explained by the interplay between inter- and intracage jumps. By elucidation of the key factors affecting Li-ion diffusion in Li6PS5Cl, this work paves the way for optimizing ionic conductivity in the argyrodite family.

Chemically accurate predictions for water adsorption on Brønsted sites of zeolite H-MFI

We investigate the adsorption of water molecules in the zeolite H-MFI at isolated Brønsted acid sites (BAS) for loadings of 1, 2, and 3 H2O/BAS. We consider two approaches to the O3Al-O(H)-Si sites: the Brønsted-type approach of H2O to the acidic proton and the Lewis-type approach to the aluminium atom of the AlO4 tetrahedron. From the twelve crystallographically inequivalent framework sites for Al, a representative set of six active site positions is chosen. For them, we calculate CCSD(T)-quality adsorption energies at MP2-quality adsorption structures for different approaches, 48 in total. The Brønsted-type approach is favoured for most cases but the Lewis-type approach has similar stability for some framework positions. We predict heats of adsorption per molecule ranging from 60 to 76, 56 to 65, and 56 to 64 kJ mol-1 for loadings of 1, 2, and 3 H2O/BAS, respectively. For 1 H2O/BAS, the experimental result (70 kJ mol-1) falls into the range of our predictions, whereas for 2 and 3 H2O/BAS, the measured adsorption heats per molecule (74 and 70 kJ mol-1, respectively) are larger than our predictions. For 2 H2O/BAS, the ion-pair structure generated by proton transfer to the water dimer competes with the neutral adsorption complex. The DFT adsorption energies (PBE+D2) deviate significantly from the CCSD(T)-quality reference energies, by up to 25 kJ mol-1 for 1 H2O/BAS, 25 kJ mol-1 per H2O for 2 H2O/BAS, and 18 kJ mol-1 per H2O for 3 H2O/BAS. Specifically, PBE+D2 overstabilises the ion-pair structure, i.e. in many cases the PBE+D2 error is much larger for ionic than for neutral adsorption structures.

First-Principles Study on Bi2Te2S Monolayer for Adsorption Performance and Sensing Capability

In this study, a comprehensive investigation into the gas sensing capabilities of the two-dimensional (2D) Bi2Te2S was conducted using first-principles calculations based on density functional theory. A wide array of gas molecules, including CH4, Cl2, CO, CO2, H2, H2O, H2S, N2, NH3, NO, NO2, O2, and SO2, was encompassed in this work. Through the strategic placement of these gas molecules at different locations on the Bi2Te2S monolayer and taking into account a range of configurations, the adsorption process was thoroughly investigated, with a particular emphasis on the structures that are most thermodynamically stable. It was revealed that Cl2, O2, NO, and NO2 molecules exhibit a pronounced affinity for the Bi2Te2S monolayer. Notably, it was found that the Cl2@Bi2Te2S, O2@Bi2Te2S, and NO2@Bi2Te2S systems' gas adsorption capabilities are greatly enhanced by the introduction of an external electric field. Moreover, the addition of horizontal biaxial strain significantly impacts the gas adsorption properties of the O2@Bi2Te2S system, underscoring the tunability of the Bi2Te2S monolayer's sensing capabilities. In light of these theoretical results, the Bi2Te2S monolayer is proposed to have great potential as an extremely sensitive and selective gas sensing material, especially for identifying Cl2, O2, NO, and NO2. This study clarifies the intrinsic gas sensing capabilities of the Bi2Te2S monolayer, while highlighting how its performance can be tailored in response to external stimuli, setting the stage for the advancement of more sophisticated gas sensing devices.

High-valent actinyl (AnO2; An = U, Np and Pu) complexation with TEtraQuinoline (TEQ) ligand - a DFT study

A recently synthesised novel macrocycle composed of four quinoline units called TEtraquinoline (TEQ) (J. Am. Chem. Soc., 2023, 145(4), 2609-2618) was reported to exhibit transition metal complexation ability. Meanwhile, there is a growing interest in different binding motifs for radioactive and toxic actinides. In this study, we modelled high-valent actinyl (AnO2)n+, An = U, Np, Pu; n = 1, 2, 3 complexes of TEQ and studied their geometric and electronic properties using scalar relativistic density functional theory (SR-DFT). The calculated results showed that the equatorial An-N and axial AnO bonds were polar bonds with a high degree of covalence, the former being longer than the latter. Natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis of the An-N bond orders decreased from complexes of uranyl to plutonyl and from complexes of heptavalent to pentavalent actinyls. This was due to the localization of the 5f orbital in the heavier actinyl and the high charge on An. The charge analysis showed a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) on complexation. It was interesting to observe metal-to-ligand spin delocalization only in the [AnVI/VIIO2L]2+/3+ complexes, where the spin density on An was observed to increase on complexation. Based on the assigned oxidation states, it was observed that the heptavalent neptunyl cation retained its formal high oxidation state on complexation with TEQ. The energetics associated with the formation reaction of all the actinyl-TEQ complexes suggest spontaneity at lower temperatures (i.e., lower than 298.15 K). The energy decomposition analysis (EDA) indicates that the electrostatic energy contributions were predominant in the [AnVO2L]+ complexes, while covalent (orbital) energy contributions were higher in the [AnVIO2L]2+ and [AnVIIO2L]3+ complexes. The extended transition state-natural orbitals for chemical valence (ETS-NOCV) analysis confirmed the prominent covalent character in [AnVIIO2L]3+ over [AnVIO2L]2+ and [AnVO2L]+and the back donation of charges from An to N that stabilizes TEQ.

Gold(I) Catalysis in Alkyne-Alkene Reactions: A Systematic Exploration through Molecular Electrostatic Potential Analysis

Gold catalysis enables selective chemical transformations with catalytic activity tunable through ligand selection. This study uses the density functional theory (DFT) to explore the impact of phosphine ligands (PR3) on gold(I)-catalyzed alkyne-alkene cyclobutene formation. We analyze the following key steps: (i) PR3-Au+ complexation, (ii) alkyne binding, (iii) alkene binding, (iv) C-C coupling transition state, (v) cyclobutene formation transition state, and (vi) cyclobutene dissociation. Molecular electrostatic potential (MESP) analysis provided a deeper understanding of electronic effects and revealed a strong correlation between the change in MESP at the gold nucleus (ΔNVAu+) upon complex formation with various ligands and the corresponding complexation energy, as well as between the change in MESP at the alkyne carbon (ΔVC) and the C-C coupling step activation barrier. This establishes MESP as a powerful tool for understanding ligand influence on catalysis. Our findings suggest that electron-donating phosphine ligands, combined with electron-withdrawing alkyne substituents, enhance catalyst turnover, promote cyclobutene product dissociation from the gold(I) complex, and facilitate catalyst regeneration. Solvent effects also play a crucial role. Bulky XPhos, JohnPhos, and CyJohnPhos ligands enhance gold(I) catalysis via steric protection, electron donation, and catalyst regeneration efficiency. In conclusion, this study provides insights into ligand effects in gold(I)-catalyzed cyclobutene formation, guiding future catalyst design.

Structural, mechanical, electronic, vibrational properties and hydrogen bonding of a novel energetic ionic 5, 5'-dinitroamino-3, 3'-azo-oxadiazole 4, 7-diaminopyridazino [4, 5-c] furoxan salt

CONTEXT AND RESULTS

The structure, mechanical, electronic, vibration, and hydrogen bonding properties of a novel high-energy and low-sensitivity 5, 5'-dinitroamino-3, 3'-azo-oxadiazole 4, 7-diaminopyridazino [4, 5-c] furoxan salt have been studied by density functional theory. The calculated vibrational properties show that the low-frequency mode is mainly contributed by the vibration of the -NO2 group, and the high-frequency mode is mainly contributed by the vibration of the -NH2 group and the N7-H3 bond which protonates the cation. In addition, it is analyzed that the first bond to break may be the N-NO2 bond. The calculated hydrogen bond properties indicate that the hydrogen bond between water molecules and cations is N7-H3… O5 (1.563 Å), which is the shortest hydrogen bond among all hydrogen bonds. The presence of this exceptionally short hydrogen bond renders the N7-H3 and H6-O5 bonds resistant to disruption at high frequencies, underscoring the pivotal role of hydrogen bonding in stabilizing the structure of energetic materials. Given the absence of experimental and theoretical data on the electronic, mechanical, and vibrational properties of the material thus far, our calculations offer valuable theoretical insights into the ionic salts of high energy and low sensitivity.

COMPUTATIONAL METHODS

All calculations have been carried out based on density functional theory (DFT) and implemented in the CASTEP code. The mode-conserving pseudopotential is utilized to describe the plane wave expansion function, while the PBE functional within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) is employed to characterize the exchange-correlation interaction. Additionally, dispersion correction is applied using Grimme's DFT-D method.

Ion adsorption-enrichment effect and its driving mechanism for nano-dots lithography with SPM probe on water-soluble crystal surfaces

HYPOTHESIS

Water-soluble KDP (KH2PO4) crystals possess excellent optical properties and are employed as frequency converters in clean fusion energy. To improve their performances, there is an immediate necessity to lithograph surface nano-patterns on them. Although the Scanning Probe Microscope (SPM) provides a promising way to achieve this purpose through the water menisci, the driving mechanisms of the lithographic behaviors have not yet been revealed.

SIMULATIONS AND EXPERIMENTS

Multi-scale investigations are constructed to explore the underlying driving mechanisms. The SPM probe-induced ion diffusion-transport behaviors are investigated by molecular dynamics. The ion adsorption-enrichment mechanisms are revealed by 18 adsorption models via the ab initio. The SPM probe-induced self-assembly experiments are performed to prove the local heavy concentration. A comprehensive model is developed to describe the lithography mechanisms of the probe-induced self-assembly nano-dots on water-soluble substrates.

FINDINGS

It is interestingly found that the KDP growth units (H2PO4-) exhibit obvious adsorption-enrichment effect at 3.16 Å from the probe surface, causing local heavy concentration. The H2PO4- would spontaneously adsorb onto the probe surface, which is dominated by the Si-O bonding reactions. The nano-dots with the height of 27 ∼ 48 nm and diameter of 2.0 ∼ 2.7 μm are lithographed on the KDP substrate. The proposed model further confirms that the lithography processes are driven by the solution supersaturation, solute diffusion, and surface free energy.

Room-temperature ferroelectric, piezoelectric and resistive switching behaviors of single-element Te nanowires

Ferroelectrics are essential in memory devices for multi-bit storage and high-density integration. Ferroelectricity mainly exists in compounds but rare in single-element materials due to their lack of spontaneous polarization in the latter. However, we report a room-temperature ferroelectricity in quasi-one-dimensional Te nanowires. Piezoelectric characteristics, ferroelectric loops and domain reversals are clearly observed. We attribute the ferroelectricity to the ion displacement created by the interlayer interaction between lone-pair electrons. Ferroelectric polarization can induce a strong field effect on the transport along the Te chain, giving rise to a self-gated ferroelectric field-effect transistor. By utilizing ferroelectric Te nanowire as channel, the device exhibits high mobility (~220 cm2·V-1·s-1), continuous-variable resistive states can be observed with long-term retention (>105 s), fast speed (<20 ns) and high-density storage (>1.92 TB/cm2). Our work provides opportunities for single-element ferroelectrics and advances practical applications such as ultrahigh-density data storage and computing-in-memory devices.

Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics Investigation on the Permeation of Sodium and Chloride Ions Through Nanopores in Graphene and Hexagonal Boron Nitride Membranes

Nanoporous membranes promise energy-efficient water desalination. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), like graphene, exhibits outstanding physical and chemical properties, making it a promising candidate for water treatment. We employed Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics simulations to establish an accurate modeling of Na+ and Cl- permeation through hydrogen passivated nanopores in graphene and h-BN membranes. We demonstrate that ion separation works well for the h-BN system by imposing a barrier of 0.13 eV and 0.24 eV for Na+ and Cl- permeation, respectively. In contrast, for permeation of the graphene nanopore, the Cl- ion faces a minimum of energy of 0.68 eV in the nanopore plane and is prone toward blockade of the nanopore, while the Na+ ion experiences a slight minimum of 0.03 eV. Overall, the desalination performance of h-BN nanopores surpasses that of their graphene counterparts.

Bifunctional Ligand Passivation Enables Stable Blue Mixed-Halide CsPb(Br/Cl)3 Perovskite Quantum Dots toward Light-Emitting Diodes

Mixed-halide CsPb(Br/Cl)3 perovskite quantum dots (PeQDs) have attracted extensive attention in light-emitting diodes (LEDs), but their low photoluminescent efficiency and especially poor stability impede their practical applications. Here, we employ bifunctional didodecyldimethylammonium thiocyanide (DDASCN) with a pseudohalogen SCN- and branched DDA+ to obtain blue-emitting CsPbBr2Cl PeQDs. DDASCN significantly boosts the photoluminescence quantum yield to 92% by inhibiting nonradiative recombination. Importantly, DDASCN PeQDs show excellent stabilities against air, UV light, heat, and polar solvents. These improved performances were explained by density functional theory calculation, which shows that SCN- fills the Cl- vacancy by simultaneously binding with undercoordinated Pb2+ and Cs+, while DDA+ connects undercoordinated Br- and lies parallel to the PeQD core, leading to efficient passivation and a strong binding capacity. Finally, we achieved high-performance white LEDs by integrating our PeQDs, resulting in a color-rendering index of 92.9, a color gamut of 119.61%, and chromaticity coordinates of (0.33, 0.33). This provides an effective method to obtain efficient and stable CsPb(Br/Cl)3 PeQDs for practical applications.

Stabilization of Cuδ+ Sites Within MnO2 for Superior Urea Electro-Synthesis

Electrocatalytic C-N coupling between NO3 - and CO2 has emerged as a sustainable route for urea production. However, identifying catalytic active sites and designing efficient electrocatalysts remain significant challenges. Herein, the synthesis of Cu-doped MnO2 nanotube (denoted as Cu-MnO2) with stable Cuδ+-oxygen vacancies (Ovs)-Mn3+ dual sites is reported. Compared with pure MnO2, Cuδ+ doping can effectively enhance urea production performance in the co-reduction of CO2 and NO3 -. Thus, Cu-MnO2 catalyst exhibits a maximum Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 54.7% and the highest yield rate of 116.7 mmol h-1 gcat. -1 in a flow cell. Remarkably, the urea yield rate remains over 78 mmol h-1 gcat. -1 across a wide potential range. Further experimental and theoretical results elucidate the unique role of Cu-MnO2 solid-solution for stabilizing Cuδ+ sites in Cuδ+-Ovs-Mn3+, endowing the catalyst with superior structural and electrochemical stabilities. This thermodynamically promotes urea formation and kinetically lowers the energy barrier of C-N coupling.

Modulation of triplet quantum coherence by guest-induced structural changes in a flexible metal-organic framework

Quantum sensing has the potential to improve the sensitivity of chemical sensing by exploiting the characteristics of qubits, which are sensitive to the external environment. Modulation of quantum coherence by target analytes can be a useful tool for quantum sensing. Using molecular qubits is expected to provide excellent sensitivity due to the proximity of the sensor to the target analyte. However, many molecular qubits are used at cryogenic temperatures, and how to make molecular qubits respond to specific analytes remains unclear. Here, we propose a material design in which the coherence time changes in response to a variety of analytes at room temperature. We used the photoexcited triplet, which can be initialized at room temperature, as qubits and introduce them to a metal-organic framework that can flexibly change its pore structure in response to guest adsorption. By changing the local molecular density around the triplet qubits by adsorption of a specific analyte, the mobility of the triplet qubit can be changed, and the coherence time can be made responsive.

Removal of phenazopyridine from water, synthetic urine, and real sample by adsorption using graphene oxide: A DFT theoretical/experimental approach

Herein, graphene oxide was used as the highly efficient phenazopyridine adsorbent from aqueous medium, synthetic, and human urine. The nanoadsorbent was characterized by different instrumental techniques. The adsorption capacity (1253.17 mg g-1) was reached at pH 5.0, using an adsorbent dosage of 0.125 g L-1 at 298 K. The Sips and Langmuir described the equilibrium data well. At the same time, the pseudo-second order was more suitable for fitting the kinetic data. Thermodynamic parameters revealed the exothermic nature of adsorption with an increase in randomness at the solid-liquid interface. The magnitude of the enthalpy variation value indicates that the process involves the physisorption phenomenon. At the same time, ab initio molecular dynamics data corroborated with the thermodynamic results, indicating that adsorbent and adsorbate establish hydrogen bonds through the amine groups (adsorbate) and hydroxyl groups on the adsorbent surface (weak interactions). Electrostatic interactions are also involved. Additionally, the adsorption assays conducted in simulated medium and human urine showed the excellent performance of adsorbent material to remove the drug in real concentrations excreted by the kidneys (removal values higher than 60%).

Strong interactions through the highly polar "Early-Late" metal-metal bonds enable single-atom catalysts good durability and superior bifunctional ORR/OER activity

Simultaneously enhancing the durability and catalytic performance of metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-Nx-C) single-atom catalysts is critical to boost oxygen electrocatalysis for energy conversion and storage, yet it remains a grand challenge. Herein, through the combination of early and late metals, we proposed to enhance the stability and tune the catalytic activity of M-Nx-C SACs in oxygen electrocatalysis by their strong interaction with the M2'C-type MXene substrate. Our density functional theory (DFT) computations revealed that the strong interaction between "early-late" metal-metal bonds significantly improves thermal and electrochemical stability. Due to considerable charge transfer and shift of the d-band center, the electronic properties of these SACs can be extensively modified, thereby optimizing their adsorption strength with oxygenated intermediates and achieving eight promising bifunctional catalysts for ORR/OER with low overpotentials. More importantly, the constant-potential analysis demonstrated the excellent bifunctional activity of SACs supported on MXene substrate across a broad pH range, especially in strongly alkaline media with record-low overpotentials. Further machine learning analysis shows that the d-band center, the charge of the active site, and the work function of the formed heterojunctions are critical to revealing the ORR/OER activity origin. Our results underscore the vast potential of strong interactions between different metal species in enhancing the durability and catalytic performance of SACs.
