Abstract
Reactivity descriptors indicate where a reagent is most reactive and how it is most likely to react. However, a reaction will only occur when the reagent encounters a suitable reaction partner. Determining whether a pair of reagents is well-matched requires developing reactivity rules that depend on both reagents. This can be achieved using the expression for the minimum-interaction-energy obtained from the density functional reactivity theory. Different terms in this expression will be dominant in different circumstances; depending on which terms control the reactivity, different reactivity indicators will be preferred.

Abstract
This paper presents a brief summary of the difficulty that resides in the definition of the elusive concept of local chemical hardness. We argue that a definition of local hardness should be useful to a reactivity principle and not just as a mere definition. We then continue with a formal discussion about the benefits and difficulties of using the Fukui potential, which is interpreted as an alchemical derivative (alchemical hardness), as descriptor of local hardness of molecules. Computational evidence shows that the alchemical hardness is at least as good a descriptor as the combination of other two well-stabilized descriptors of local hardness, such as the Fukui function and grand canonical local hardness. Although our results are auspicious for the alchemical hardness as descriptor of local hardness, we finish by calling the attention of the community on the importance of discussing the raison d'être of a local hardness function and its main characteristics. We suggest that an axiomatic construction of local hardness could be they way of constructing a local hardness which is both useful and free of arbitrariness.

Abstract
The ability to understand and predict ambident reactivity is key to the rational design of organic syntheses. An approach to understand trends in ambident reactivity is the hard and soft acids and bases (HSAB) principle. The recent controversy over the general validity of this principle prompted us to investigate the competing gas-phase SN 2 reaction channels of archetypal ambident nucleophiles CN- , OCN- , and SCN- with CH3 Cl (SN 2@C) and SiH3 Cl (SN 2@Si), using DFT calculations. Our combined analyses highlight the inability of the HSAB principle to correctly predict the reactivity trends of these simple, model reactions. Instead, we have successfully traced reactivity trends to the canonical orbital-interaction mechanism and the resulting nucleophile-substrate interaction energy. The HOMO-LUMO orbital interactions set the trend in both SN 2@C and SN 2@Si reactions. We provide simple rules for predicting the ambident reactivity of nucleophiles based on our Kohn-Sham molecular orbital analysis.

Abstract
In the present study, trends of electronic contribution to molecular electrostatic potential [Vel(r¯)(r=0)], Fukui potential [v(+)f|(r=0) and v(-)f|(r=0)] and hardness potential derivatives [Δ(+)h(k) and Δ(-)h(k)] for isolated atoms as well as atoms in molecules are investigated. The generated numerical values of these three reactivity descriptors in these two electronically different situations are critically analyzed through the relevant formalism. Values of Vel(r¯) (when r → 0, i.e., on the nucleus) are higher for atoms in molecules than that of isolated atoms. In contrast, higher values of v(+)|(r=0) and v(-)|(r=0) are observed for isolated atoms compared to the values for atoms in a molecule. However, no such regular trend is observed for the Δ(+)h(k) and Δ(-)h(k) values, which is attributed to the uncertainty in the Fukui function values of atoms in molecules. The sum of Fukui potential and the sum of hardness potential derivatives in molecules are also critically analyzed, which shows the efficacy of orbital relaxation effects in quantifying the values of these parameters. The chemical consequence of the observed trends of these descriptors in interpreting electron delocalization, electronic relaxation and non-negativity of atomic Fukui function indices is also touched upon. Several commonly used molecules containing carbon as well as heteroatoms are chosen to make the investigation more insightful.

Abstract
Within the context of reactivity descriptors known in conceptual DFT, the linear response function (χ(r,r')) remained nearly unexploited. Although well known, in its time dependent form, in the solid state physics and time-dependent DFT communities the study of the "chemistry" present in the kernel was, until recently, relatively unexplored. The evaluation of the linear response function as such and its study in the time independent form are highlighted in the present review. On the fundamental side, the focus is on the approaches of increasing complexity to compute and represent χ(r,r'), its visualisation going from plots of the unintegrated χ(r,r') to an atom condensed matrix. The study on atoms reveals its physical significance, retrieving atomic shell structure, while the results on molecules illustrate that a variety of chemical concepts are retrieved: inductive and mesomeric effects, electron delocalisation, aromaticity and anti-aromaticity, σ and π aromaticity,…. The applications show that the chemistry of aliphatic (saturated and unsaturated) chains, saturated and aromatic/anti-aromatic rings, organic, inorganic or metallic in nature, can be retrieved via the linear response function, including the variation of the electronic structure of the reagents along a reaction path. The connection of the linear response function with the concept of nearsightedness and the alchemical derivatives is also highlighted.

Abstract
Local hard-soft acid-base (HSAB) principle is semiquantitative in nature due to the presence of an ad hoc charge transfer parameter. The accuracy of HSAB principle significantly depends on the definition of this ad hoc parameter. In this paper, for the first time we have introduced the second-order approximation of ΔN (ΔNsecond) as an ad hoc parameter for charge transfer to calculate interaction energies of multiple site based interactions using local hard soft acid base principle. The second-order approximation of ΔN has been derived from Sanderson's electronegativity equalization principle. To validate our approach, we have studied interaction energies of some prototype molecules. The interaction energies obtained from our approach have been further compared with the interaction energies of those obtained using other charge transfer parameters (ΔNfirst and λ) and the conventional methods. We have also discussed the advantages and limitations of the approach.

Abstract
We extend the periodic charge-dipole electrostatic model, see I. V. Bodrenko, M. Sierka, E. Fabiano, and F. Della Sala, J. Chem. Phys. 137, 134702 (2012), to include a kinetic-exchange-correlation (KXC) correction. The KXC correction is approximated by means of an extended-Hückel-type formula, it is exact in the infinite jellium model and it is also computationally efficient as it requires only the computation of overlap integrals. Tests on the linear response of silver slabs to an external electrostatic perturbation show that the KXC correction yields a very accurate description of induced dipole and of the whole induced charge density profile. We also show that the KXC parameters are quite transferable and related to the atomic polarizability.

Abstract
We present an extension of the charge-dipole model for the description of periodic systems. This periodic charge-dipole electrostatic model (PCDEM) allows one to describe the linear response of periodic structures in terms of charge- and dipole-type gaussian basis functions. The long-range electrostatic interaction is efficiently described by means of the continuous fast multipole method. As a first application, the PCDEM method is applied to describe the polarizability of silver slabs. We find that for a correct description of the polarizability of the slabs both charges and dipoles are required. However a continuum set of parametrizations, i.e., different values of the width of charge- and dipole-type gaussians, leads to an equivalent and accurate description of the slabs polarizability but a completely unphysical description of induced charge-density inside the slab. We introduced the integral squared density measure which allows one to obtain a unique parametrization which accurately describes both the polarizability and the induced density profile inside the slab. Finally the limits of the electrostatic approximations are also pointed out.

Abstract
Chemical reactivity descriptors are derived within the framework of the pair density functional theory. These indices provide valuable information about bonding rearrangements and activating mechanisms upon electrophilic or nucleophilic reactions. Indices derived and tested in this work represent nonlocal counterparts of the local reactivity indices derived in the context of conceptual density functional theory (CDFT) and frequently used in reactivity studies; the Fukui function, the local softness and the dual descriptor. In this work, we show how these nonlocal indices provide a quantum chemical basis to explain the success of qualitative resonance models in chemical reactivity predictions. Also, local information is implicitly contained as CDFT indices are obtained by simple integration. As illustrative examples, we have considered in this work the Markovnikov's rule, the reactivity of enolate anion, the nucleophilic conjugate addition to α,β-unsaturated compounds and the electrophilic aromatic substitution of benzene derivatives. The densities used in this work were obtained with Hartree-Fock, Kohn-Sham DFT, and singles and doubles configuration interaction (CISD) approaches.

Abstract
We continue a series of papers in which the chemical importance of the linear response kernel χ(r,r') of conceptual DFT is investigated. In previous contributions (J. Chem. Theory Comput. 2010, 6, 3671; J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2010, 1, 1228; Chem. Phys. Lett. 2010, 498, 192), two computational methodologies were presented and it was observed that the linear response kernel could serve as a measure of electron delocalisation, discerning inductive, resonance and hyperconjugation effects. This study takes the analysis one step further, linking the linear response kernel to the concept of aromaticity. Based on a detailed analysis of a series of organic and inorganic (poly)cyclic molecules, we show that the atom-condensed linear response kernel discriminates between aromatic and non-aromatic systems. Moreover, a new quantitative measure of aromaticity, termed the para linear response (PLR) index, is introduced. Its definition was inspired by the recent work published around the para delocalisation index (PDI). Both indices are shown to correlate very well, which emphasises the linear response kernel's value in the theoretical description of aromaticity.

Abstract
In this paper we give a new definition of the softness kernel based on the exchange-correlation density. This new kernel is shown to correspond to the change of electron fluctuation upon external perturbation, thus helping to bridge the gap between conceptual density functional theory and some tools describing electron localization in molecules. With the aid of a few computational calculations on diatomics we illustrate the performance of this new computational tool.

Abstract
New Fukui functions have been derived within the conceptual density functional theory by the analysis of the polarization effect of a system in static electric field. Resulting Fukui functions accurately reproduce the global softness and electronic dipolar polarizability; they meet the condition integral[f(r)/r]dr = -(partial differential mu/partial differential Z)(N) and lead to very reasonable values of the global hardness for atoms for the group of 29 main group elements. Computational clarity makes the new Fukui functions a promising tool in studies of molecular reactivity.

Abstract
Global hardness and softness and the associated hard/soft acid/base (HSAB) principle have been used to explain many experimental observed reactivity patterns and these concepts can be found in textbooks of general, inorganic, and organic chemistry. In addition, local versions of these reactivity indices and principles have been defined to describe the regioselectivity of systems. In a very recent article (Chem.-Eur. J. 2008, 14, 8652), the present authors have shown that the picture of these well-known descriptors is incomplete and that the understanding of these reactivity indices must be "reinterpreted". In fact, the local softness and hardness contain the same "potential information" and they should be interpreted as the "local abundance" or "concentration" of their corresponding global properties. In this contribution, we analyze the implications of this new point of view for the applicability of these well-known descriptors when comparing two sites in three situations: two sites within one molecule, two sites in two different, but noninteracting molecules, and two sites in two different, but interacting, molecules. The implications on the HSAB principle are highlighted, leading to the discussion of the role of the electrostatic interaction.

Abstract
In this work, we will show that the largest values of the local softness and hardness do not necessarily correspond to the softest and hardest regions of the molecule, respectively. Based on our results, we will argue that it is more useful to interpret the local softness and the local hardness as functions that measure the "local abundance" or "concentration" of the corresponding global properties. This new point of view helps reveal how and when these local reactivity indices are most useful.

Abstract
A hardness based similarity index for studying the quantum similarity for atoms is analyzed. The investigation of hardness and Fukui functions of atoms leads to the construction of a quantum similarity measure, which can be interpreted as a quantified comparison of chemical reactivity of atoms. Evaluation of the new measure reveals periodic tendencies throughout Mendeleev's table. Moreover on the diagonal the global hardness was recovered. Considering a corresponding quantum similarity index reveals that renormalization of the measure can mask periodic patterns. The hardness was calculated for atoms with nuclear charge 3<or=Z<or=103, using the best single configuration electron density functions available. Different hardness kernels were used and the importance of the different contributions to the kernel was investigated. The atomic self-similarities constructed in this way show a fair correlation with experimental atomic polarizability.

Abstract
Chemical hardness, identified as the difference between the vertical first ionization potential I and the vertical electron affinity A, is analyzed in the context of the ionization theorems to derive expressions for its evaluation at different levels of approximation that arise as a direct consequence of the derivative discontinuity of the exchange-correlation potential. The quantities involved in these expressions incorporate indirectly the effects of the discontinuity, but their values may be calculated with any functional of the local density approximation, generalized gradient approximation, or optimized effective potential type, with or without derivative discontinuity, and with or without the correct asymptotic behavior. By comparison with the vertical energy difference values of I and A, which requires the calculation of the N-, (N-1)-, and (N+1)-electron systems, it is found, for a set of 14 closed shell molecules, that the difference between the eigenvalues of the highest occupied molecular orbitals of the N- and (N+1)-electron systems leads to rather accurate values, when the correct asymptotic behavior is incorporated, and that a second-order one-body perturbation approach that only requires information from the N-electron system leads to reasonable values.

Abstract
The weight of the energetic components (electronic kinetic, electron-nucleus and electron-electron Coulombic, and correlation energies) of the ionization potential, electron affinity, chemical potential, and global hardness is evaluated and contrasted with the energetic components of the hardness kernel and the experimental values of these properties for 40 systems. The contrast of the hardness terms obtained from finite difference and hardness kernel gives some insight on the possible implications to differentiate the electronic energy with respect to the number electrons or the electron density.
