C–H Functionalization Strategies in the Naphthalene Series: Site Selections and Functional Diversity

Naphthalene is certainly not a common arene. In contrast to benzene, the bicyclic feature of naphthalene offers multiple differentiable positions and thus a broad diversity of substitution patterns. Naphthalene is a central building block for the construction of elaborated polycyclic architectures with applications in broad domains such as life and materials sciences. As a result, C–H functionalization strategies specially designed for naphthalene substrates have become essential to install valuable substituents on one or both rings towards polysubstituted naphthalenes. This short review provides a focus on uncommon substitution patterns; however, classical ortho C–H activation is not covered.

Mechanism and enantioselectivity of the asymmetric [3+2]-annulation between N-methylindole and enoldiazoacetamide catalyzed by prolinate-coordinated dirhodium: A theoretical study

The mechanistic study of Rh₂(S-MSP)₄-catalyzed asymmetric [3 + 2]-annulation of N-methylindole and enoldiazoacetamide carbenoid to produce C2,C3-fused indole skeleton has been carried out by combining the density functional theory and semi-empirical method with ONIOM methodology. The mechanism and origin of enantioselectivity were disclosed by our calculations. The cycloaddition process was initiated by vinylogous attack of indole on the enol terminus of carbenoid, which was considered to be the enantio-controlling step. Followed by ring closure step where C-Rh bond adds to the iminium, adduct was afforded enantioselectively. The rate-controlling step, depending on the pathways the reaction proceeds along, could be either one of the two steps. Moreover, we elucidated the effect of weak interaction on the enantioselectivity using the independent gradient model analysis and provided possible insight into reaction design. The catalytic cycle was also kinetically interpreted in a non-conventional way, which is the energetic span model, realized by the AUTOF program.

Direct ortho-Selective Amination of 2-Naphthol and Its Analogues with Hydrazines

Described herein is a regioselective ortho-amination of 2-naphthol and its analogues with substituted hydrazines. It provides a direct methodology for the synthesis of N-arylaminated naphthol derivatives without the formation of related 1,1'-biaryl-2,2'-diamine or carbazole byproducts. Specifically, using N, N-disubstituted hydrazine precursors, N-unsubstituted ortho-aminated derivatives and related secondary amines can be formed in ethylene glycol in moderate to excellent yields. Variation of substrates to N, N'-diarylhydrazines and N-methyl- N, N'-diarylhydrazines led to N-aryl-1-amino-2-naphthol compounds. It is noted that biologically interesting indazole motifs can be facilely created by the reaction of N, N'-dialkylhydrazines with 2-naphthols. These ortho-amination reactions have the advantage of one-pot operation without the use of transition metal catalysts.

Theoretical study of the thermodynamic and burning properties of oxygen-rich hydrazine derivatives--green and powerful oxidants for energetic materials

A series of no-chlorine and oxygen-rich hydrazine derivatives (hydrazine modified with -NO₂ and NO₃(-) groups) was designed and optimized to obtain molecular geometries and electronic structures at density functional theory-B3PW91/6-311++G(3df,3pd) level. Some important properties such as bond dissociation enthalpy, density, natural bond orbitals, thermodynamic parameters, molecular orbital energy and burning rate were then calculated. The simulation results revealed that these compounds exhibit excellent performance, with significant superiority over traditional oxidants found in propellants.
