Electronic reorganization triggered by electron transfer: The intervalence charge transfer of a Fe3+/Fe2+bimetallic complex

Orthogonally Constrained Orbital Optimization: Assessing Changes of Optimal Orbitals for Orthogonal Multireference States

The choice of molecular orbitals is decisive in configuration interaction calculations. In this letter, a democratic description of the ground and excited states follows an orthogonally constrained orbital optimization to produce state-specific orbitals. The approach faithfully recovers the excitation energy of a four-electron Hubbard trimer, whereas state-average calculations can miss the value by a factor 2.5. The method emphasizes the need for orbital optimization to reduce configuration interaction expansions and to reach spectroscopic accuracy.

Non-stoichiometric magnetite as catalyst for the photocatalytic degradation of phenol and 2,6-dibromo-4-methylphenol - a new approach in water treatment

Phenol and 2,6-dibromo-4-methylphenol (DBMP) were removed from aqueous solutions by ozonolysis and photocatalysis. The properties and structural features of the catalysts and the organic compounds are discussed, as well as their influence on the degradation reaction rates. The degradation efficiency in photocatalytic processes was higher for DBMP (98%) than for phenol (approximately 50%). This proves the high efficiency of magnetite in the photocatalytic degradation of halogenated aromatic pollutants. The particularly high degradation efficiency regarding halogen-containing DBMP molecules and the yield of bromide ions indicate that DBMP degradation follows a mixed reduction-oxidation mechanism. DBMP molecules interact with the magnetite surface, enabling them to react with the available electrons, and, as a result, bromide ions can be released. The results confirm that magnetite is an effective photocatalyst in the degradation of halogenated aromatic pollutants.

Magnetic exchange and valence delocalization in a mixed valence [Fe2+Fe3+Te2]+ complex: insights from theory and interpretations of magnetic and spectroscopic data

A mixed valence binuclear Fe^2.5+-Fe^2.5+ (Robin-Day Class III) transition metal complex, [Fe^2.5+μTe₂Fe^2.5+]^1-, composed of two FeN₂Te₂ pseudo-tetrahedral units with μ-bridging Te^2- ligands was reported to exist in an unprecedented S = 3/2 ground state (Nature Chemistry, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41557-021-00853-5). For this and the homologous complexes containing Se^2- and S^2-, the Anderson-Hasegawa double exchange spin-Hamiltonian was broadly used to interpret the corresponding structural, spectroscopic and magnetic data. First principles multireference ab initio calculations are used here to simulate magnetic and spectroscopic EPR data; analysis of the results affords a rationale for the stabilization of the S = 3/2 ground state of the Fe₂ pair. Complete Active Space Self-Consistent Field (CASSCF) calculations and dynamical correlation accounted for by means of N-Electron Valence Perturbation Theory to Second Order (NEVPT2) reproduce well the g-factors determined from simulations of X-band EPR spectra. A crucial technical tool to achieve these results is: (i) use of a localized orbital formulation of the many-particle problem at the scalar-relativistic CASSCF step; (ii) choice of state averaging over states of a given spin (at the CASCI/NEVPT2 step); and (iii) accounting for spin-orbit coupling within the non-relativistic Born-Oppenheimer (BO) many-particle basis using Quasi-Degenerate Perturbation Theory (QDPT). The inclusion of the S = 5/2 spin manifold reproduced the observed increase in the magnetic susceptibility (χT) in the high temperature range (T > 100 K), which is explained by thermal population of the S = 5/2 excited state at energy 160 cm^-1 above the S = 3/2 ground state. Theoretical values of χT from experimentally reported data points in the temperature range from 3 to 30 K were further computed and analyzed using a model which takes spin-phonon coupling into account. The model considerations and the computational protocols of this study are generally applicable to any Class I/II mixed valence dimer. The work can potentially stimulate further experimental and theoretical work on bi- and oligonuclear transition metal complexes of importance to bioinorganic chemistry and life sciences.

Mixed Valence (μ-Phenoxido) FeII FeIII et FeIII FeIV Compounds: Electron and Proton Transfers

Mixed-valence non-heme diiron centers are present at the active sites of a few enzymes and confer them interesting reactivities with the two ions acting in concert. Related (μ-phenoxido)diiron complexes have been developed as enzyme mimics. They exhibit very rich spectroscopic properties enabling independent monitoring of each individual ion, which proved useful for mechanistic studies of catalytic hydrolysis and oxidation reactions. In our studies of such complexes, we observed that these compounds give rise to a wide variety of electron transfers (intervalence charge transfer), proton transfers (tautomerism), coupled electron and proton transfers (H^. abstraction and PCET). In this minireview, we present and analyze the main results illustrating the latter aspects.

Reduced Common Molecular Orbital Basis for Nonorthogonal Configuration Interaction

Electron and charge transfers are part of many vital processes in nature and technology. Ab initio descriptions of these processes provide useful insights that can be utilized for applications. A combination of the embedded cluster material model and nonorthogonal configuration interaction (NOCI), in which the cluster wave functions are expanded in many-electron basis functions (MEBFs) consisting of spin-adapted, antisymmetrized products of multiconfigurational wave functions of fragments (which are usually molecules) in the cluster, appears to provide a compromise between accuracy and calculation time. Additional advantages of this NOCI-Fragments approach are the chemically convenient interpretation of the wave function in terms of molecular states, and the direct accessibility of electronic coupling between diabatic states to describe energy and electron transfer processes. Bottlenecks in this method are the large number of two-electron integrals that have to be handled for the calculation of an electronic coupling matrix element and the enormous number of matrix elements over determinant pairs that have to be evaluated for the calculation of one matrix element between the MEBFs. We show here how we created a reduced common molecular orbital basis that is utilized to significantly reduce the number of two-electron integrals that need to be handled. The results obtained with this basis do not show any loss of accuracy in relevant quantities like electronic couplings and vertical excitation energies. We also show a significant reduction in computation time without loss in accuracy when matrix elements over determinant pairs with small weights are neglected in the NOCI. These improvements in the methodology render NOCI-Fragments to be also applicable to treat clusters of larger molecular systems with larger atomic basis sets and larger active spaces, as the computation time becomes dependent on the number of occupied orbitals and less dependent on the size of the active space.

GronOR: Massively parallel and GPU-accelerated non-orthogonal configuration interaction for large molecular systems

GronOR is a program package for non-orthogonal configuration interaction calculations for an electronic wave function built in terms of anti-symmetrized products of multi-configuration molecular fragment wave functions. The two-electron integrals that have to be processed may be expressed in terms of atomic orbitals or in terms of an orbital basis determined from the molecular orbitals of the fragments. The code has been specifically designed for execution on distributed memory massively parallel and Graphics Processing Unit (GPU)-accelerated computer architectures, using an MPI+OpenACC/OpenMP programming approach. The task-based execution model used in the implementation allows for linear scaling with the number of nodes on the largest pre-exascale architectures available, provides hardware fault resiliency, and enables effective execution on systems with distinct central processing unit-only and GPU-accelerated partitions. The code interfaces with existing multi-configuration electronic structure codes that provide optimized molecular fragment orbitals, configuration interaction coefficients, and the required integrals. Algorithm and implementation details, parallel and accelerated performance benchmarks, and an analysis of the sensitivity of the accuracy of results and computational performance to thresholds used in the calculations are presented.
