Sensing mechanism elucidation of a europium(III) metal-organic framework selective to aniline: A theoretical insight by means of multiconfigurational calculations

Synthesis of highly sensitive and multi-response Eu-MOF, fluorescence sensing properties and anti-counterfeiting applications

A new Europium metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF), namely [Eu(dpa) (H2O)]·0.5(bpy)·4H2O}n (H4dpa = 5-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) isophenic acid, bpy = protonated 4,4'-bipyridine) was synthesized and structurally characterized by elemental analyses, infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray single-crystal diffraction analyses. Eu-MOF shows a three-dimensional network structure based on EuIII ions and (dpa)4- ligands via µ4: η1, η2, η2, η2 coordination mode. Fluorescence analysis shows that Eu-MOF has excellent fluorescence sensing characteristics, which can efficiently and sensitively detect various pollutants in water: the limit of detection (LOD) of ratiometric fluorescence detection of ANI in water was 42.9 nM, which was better than the single-peak detection limit. In addition, the peak detection limits of Eu-MOF for Flu, ORN and NB were 120 nM, 27 nM and 94 nM, respectively. In addition, XPS, LUMO orbital energy level, fluorescence lifetime, ultraviolet absorption and other principles are used to explore the mechanism of fluorescence quenching. Surprisingly, Eu-MOF not only has excellent anti- counterfeiting ability and stability, can be used as anti-counterfeiting material in life, but also has good selectivity to Flu. Eu-MOF has obvious fluorescence quenching effect on Flu on paper under ultraviolet light, which can be used for rapid in situ imaging test paper of pesticide residues.

Tunable optical properties of isoreticular UiO-67 MOFs for photocatalysis: a theoretical study

A theoretical study of the reported photocatalytic systems based on Zr-based MOF (UiO-67) with biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (bpdc) and 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid (bpydc) as linkers was performed. Quantum chemical calculations were carried out to understand the optical properties of the materials and to facilitate the rational design of new UiO-67 derivatives with potentially improved features as photocatalysts under ambient conditions. Hence, the effect of the structural modifications on the optical properties was studied considering different designs based on the nature of the linkers: in 1 only the bpdc linker was considered, or the mixture 1 : 1 between bpdc and bpydc linkers (labeled as 1A). Also, substituents R, -NH2, and -SH, were included in the 1A MOF only over the bpdc linker (labeled as 1A-bpdc-R) and on both bpdc and bpydc linkers (labeled as 1A-R). Thus a family of six isoreticular UiO-67 derivatives was theoretically characterized using Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations on the ground singlet (S0) and first excited states (singlet and triplet) using Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT), multiconfigurational post-Hartree-Fock method via Complete Active Space Self-Consistent Field (CASSCF). In addition, the use of periodic DFT calculations suggest that the energy transfer (ET) channel between bpdc and bpydc linkers might generate more luminescence quenching of 1A when compare to 1. Besides, the results suggest that the 1A-R (R: -SH and NH2) can be used under ambient conditions; however, the ET exhibited by 1A, cannot take place in the same magnitude in these systems. These ET can favor the photocatalytic reduction of a potential metal ion, that can coordinate with the bpydc ligand, via LMCT transition. Consequently, the MOF might be photocatalytically active against molecules of interest (such as H2, N2, CO2, among others) with photo-reduced metal ions. These theoretical results serve as a useful tool to guide experimental efforts in the design of new photocatalytic MOF-based systems.

Rapid redox-response featured visual ascorbic acid sensor based on simple-assembled europium metal-organic framework

A facile, fast and visible sensing platform for ascorbic acid (AA) detection has been developed based on self-assembled hydrangea-like europium metal-organic framework (HL-EuMOF). HL-EuMOF was synthesized through a simple one-step mixing process with Eu3+ and 1, 10-phenanthroline-2, 9-dicarboxylic acid at room temperature, which exhibited excellent properties including strong red fluorescence, long decay lifetime (548.623 μs) and good luminescent stability. Based on the specific redox reaction between Fe3+ and AA, the HL-EuMOF@Fe3+ was fabricated with "turn-off" response for AA, where the resulting Fe2+ displayed effective fluorescence quenching ability toward HL-EuMOF. The sensor demonstrated low detection limit (31.94 nM), rapid response time (30 s) and high selectivity. Integration of smartphone-assisted RGB analysis with HL-EuMOF@Fe3+ permitted convenient and visible quantitative determination of AA level. This approach also presented good detection performances in complex human serum and beverage samples, which could provide a valuable tool for AA detection in biomedical research and food industry.

Adsorption properties of M-UiO-66 (M = Zr(IV); Hf(IV) or Ce(IV)) with BDC or PDC linker

The increasing CO2 emissions and their direct impact on climate change due to the greenhouse effect are environmental issues that must be solved as soon as possible. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one class of crystalline adsorbent materials that are thought to have enormous potential in CO2 capture applications. In this research, the effect of changing the metal center between Zr(IV), Ce(IV), and Hf(IV), and the linker between BDC and PDC has been fully studied. Thus, the six UiO-66 isoreticular derivatives have been synthesized and characterized by FTIR, PXRD, TGA, and N2 adsorption. We also report the BET surface area, CO2 adsorption capacities, kinetics, and the adsorption isosteric heat (Qst) of the UiO-66 derivatives mentioned family. The CO2 adsorption kinetics were evaluated using pseudo-first order, pseudo-second order, Avrami's kinetic models, and the rate-limiting step with Boyd's film diffusion, interparticle diffusion, and intraparticle diffusion models. The isosteric heats of CO2 adsorption using various MOFs are in the range 20-65 kJ mol-1 observing differences in adsorption capacities between 1.15 and 4.72 mmol g-1 at different temperatures due to the electrostatic interactions between CO2 and extra-framework metal ions. The isosteric heat of adsorption calculation in this report, which accounts for the unexpectedly high heat released from Zr-UiO-66-PDC, is finally represented as an increase in the interaction of CO2 with the PDC linker and an increase in Qst with defects.

Photophysical characterization of tetrahydroxyphenyl porphyrin Zn(II) and V(IV) complexes: experimental and DFT study

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising technique for the treatment of various diseases. In this sense, the singlet oxygen quantum yield (Φ∆) is a physical-chemical property that allows to stablish the applicability of a potential photosensitizers (PS) as a drug for PDT. In the herein report, the Φ∆ of three photosensitizers was determined: metal-free tetrahydroxyphenyl porphyrin (THPP), THPP-Zn and the THPP-V metal complexes. Their biological application was also evaluated. Therefore, the in vitro study was carried out to assess their biological activity against Escherichia coli. The metal-porphyrin complexes exhibited highest activities against the bacterial strain Escherichia coli. at the highest concentration (175 μg/mL) and show better activity than the free base ligand (salts and blank solution). Results indicated a relation between Φ∆ and the inhibitory activity against Escherichia coli, thus, whereas higher is the Φ∆, higher is the inhibitory activity. The values of the Φ∆ and the inhibitory activity follows the tendency THPP-Zn > THPP > THPP-V. Furthermore, quantum chemical calculations allowed to gain deep insight into the electronic and optical properties of THPP-Zn macrocycle, which let to verify the most probable energy transfer pathway involved in the singlet oxygen generation.

Ratiometric Luminescent Thermometer Based on the Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks by Thermal Curing

The high-performance optical thermometer probes are of great significance in diverse areas; lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) are a promising candidate for luminescence temperature sensing owing to their unique luminescence properties. However, Ln-MOFs have poor maneuverability and stability in complex environments due to the crystallization properties, which then hinder their application scope. In this work, the Tb-MOFs@TGIC composite was successfully prepared using simple covalent crosslinking through uncoordinated -NH₂ or COOH on Tb-MOFs reacting with the epoxy groups on TGIC {Tb-MOFs = [Tb₂(atpt)₃(phen)₂(H₂O)]_n; H₂atpt = 2-aminoterephthalic acid; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline monohydrate}. After curing, the fluorescence properties, quantum yield, lifetime, and thermal stability of Tb-MOFs@TGIC were remarkably enhanced. Meanwhile, the obtained Tb-MOFs@TGIC composites exhibit excellent temperature sensing properties in the low-temperature (S_r = 6.17% K^-1 at 237 K), physiological temperature (S_r = 4.86% K^-1 at 323 K), or high-temperature range (S_r = 3.88% K^-1 at 393 K) with high sensitivity. In the temperature sensing process, the sensing mode of single emission changed into double emission for ratiometric thermometry owing to the back energy transfer (BenT) from Tb-MOFs to TGIC linkers, and the BenT process enhanced with the increase of temperature, which further improved the accuracy and sensitivity of temperature sensing. Most notably, the temperature-sensing Tb-MOFs@TGIC can be easily coated on the surface of polyimide (PI), glass plate, silicon pellet (SI), and poly(tetrafluoroethylene) plate (PTFE) substrates by a simple spraying method, which also exhibited an excellent sensing property, making it applicable for a wider T range measurement. This is the first example of a postsynthetic Ln-MOF hybrid thermometer operative over a wide temperature range including the physiological and high temperature based on back energy transfer.

DFT-Based Multireference Diagnostics in the Solid State: Application to Metal-Organic Frameworks

When a many-body wave function of a system cannot be captured by a single determinant, high-level multireference (MR) methods are required to properly explain its electronic structure. MR diagnostics to estimate the magnitude of such static correlation have been primarily developed for molecular systems and range from low in computational cost to as costly as the full MR calculation itself. We report the first application of low-cost MR diagnostics based on the fractional occupation number calculated with finite-temperature DFT to solid-state systems. To compare the behavior of the diagnostics on solids and molecules, we select metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as model materials because their reticular nature provides an intuitive way to identify molecular derivatives. On a series of closed-shell MOFs, we demonstrate that the DFT-based MR diagnostics are equally applicable to solids as to their molecular derivatives. The magnitude and spatial distribution of the MR character of a MOF are found to have a good correlation with those of its molecular derivatives, which can be calculated much more affordably in comparison to those of the full MOF. The additivity of MR character discussed here suggests the set of molecular derivatives to be a good representation of a MOF for both MR detection and ultimately for MR corrections, facilitating accurate and efficient high-throughput screening of MOFs and other porous solids.

Expanding the Knowledge of the Selective-Sensing Mechanism of Nitro Compounds by Luminescent Terbium Metal-Organic Frameworks through Multiconfigurational ab Initio Calculations

The current research shows that the excited-state dynamics of the antenna ligand, both in the interacting system sensor/analyte and in the sensor without analyte, is a safe tool for elucidating the detection principle of the luminescent lanthanide-based metal-organic framework sensors. In this report the detection principle of the luminescence quenching mechanism in two Tb-based MOFs sensors is elucidated. The first system is a luminescent Tb-MOF [Tb(BTTA)_1.5(H₂O)_4.5]_n (H₂BTTA = 2,5-bis(1H-1,2,4-triazol-1-yl) terephthalic acid) selective to nitrobenzene (NB), labeled as Tb-1. The second system is {[Tb(DPYT)(BPDC)_1/2(NO₃)]·H₂O}_n (DPYT = 2,5-di(pyridin-4-yl) terephthalic acid, BPDC = biphenyl-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid), reported as a selective chemical sensor to nitromethane (NM) in situ, labeled as Tb-2. The luminescence quenching of the MOFs is promoted by intermolecular interactions with the analytes that induce destabilization of the T₁ electronic state of the linker "antenna", altering thus the sensitization pathways of the Tb atoms. This study demonstrates the value of host-guest interaction simulations and the rate constants of the radiative and nonradiative processes in understanding and elucidating the sensing mechanism in Ln-MOF sensors.

Energy Transfer in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Fluorescence Sensing

The development of materials with outstanding performance for sensitive and selective detection of multiple analytes is essential for the development of human health and society. Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (LMOFs) have controllable surface and pore sizes and excellent optical properties. Therefore, a variety of LMOF-based sensors with diverse detection functions can be easily designed and applied. Furthermore, the introduction of energy transfer (ET) into LMOFs (ET-LMOFs) could provide a richer design concept and a much more sensitive and accurate sensing performance. In this review, we focus on the recent five years of advances in ET-LMOF-based sensing materials, with an emphasis on photochemical and photophysical mechanisms. We discuss in detail possible energy transfer processes within a MOF structure or between MOFs and guest materials. Finally, the possible sensing applications of the ET-LMOF-based sensors are highlighted.

Na-Ln Heterometallic Coordination Polymers: Structure Modulation by Na+ Concentration and Efficient Detection to Tetracycline Antibiotics and 4-(Phenylazo)aniline

On the basis of the lanthanide metalloligand [Ln(ODA)₃]^3- (H₂ODA = oxydiacetic acid), three new Na-Ln heterometallic coordination polymers, [Ln(ODA)₃Na₂]_n [Ln = Eu (1) and Gd (2)] and [Tb(ODA)₃Na₃(H₂O)₂]_n (3), had been assembled by adjusting the concentration of Na⁺ ions in the reaction system. The investigations of fluorescence sensing showed that 1 could be a ratiometric probe to detect tetracycline (TC) and oxytetracycline (OTC) with high sensitivity and low detection limits, 71.92 ppb for the former and 45.54 ppb for the latter, and 3 could selectively sense 4-(phenylazo)aniline through the turn-off pathway with 14.59 ppb of detection limits. Moreover, the competing and circulating experiments indicated that both 1 and 3 had satisfactory antiinterference and recyclability for the corresponding analytes. All of these results implied that 1 and 3 should be potential fluorescent sensors for the detection of TC/OTC and 4-(phenylazo)aniline, and the possible sensing mechanism had also been discussed in depth.

The Effect of Auxiliary Nitrogenated Linkers on the Design of New Cadmium-Based Coordination Polymers as Sensors for the Detection of Explosive Materials

Three new cadmium-based coordination polymers, denoted [Cd(hfipbb)(4,4'-bipy)] (CdPF-1), [Cd(hfipbb)(2,2'-bipy)] (CdPF-2), and [Cd(hfipbb)(1,10-phen)] (CdPF-3), have been hydrothermally synthesized by using the well-known V-shaped organic linker 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)bis(benzoic acid) (H₂ hfipbb), together with different nitrogenated auxiliary linkers. Considering the d¹⁰ configuration of the transition metal selected, the luminescent properties for these CdPF-n materials were explored, finding that materials CdPF-2 and CdPF-3 act as excellent sensors in the detection of explosive nitro aromatic compounds. The photoluminescence properties of CdPF-2 and CdPF-3 revealed that significant and sensitive fluorescence quenching was observed toward NP (nitrophenol) for CdPF-2 and PA (picric acid) for CdPF-3 in MeOH suspensions.

Multireference Ab Initio Investigation on Ground and Low-Lying Excited States: Systematic Evaluation of J-J Mixing in a Eu3+ Luminescent Complex

A theoretical protocol combining density functional theory (DFT) and multireference (CAS) calculations is proposed for a Eu³⁺ complex. In the complex, electronic levels of the central Eu³⁺ ion are correctly calculated at the CASPT2 level of theory, and the effect of introducing different numbers of states in the configuration interaction matrices is highlighted as well as the shortcomings of DFT methods in the treatment of systems with high spin multiplicity and strong spin–orbit coupling effects. For the ⁵D₀ state energy calculation, the inclusion of states with different multiplicity and the number of states considered for each multiplicity are crucial parameters, even if their relative weight is different. Indeed, the addition of triplet and singlets is important, while the number of states is relevant only for the quintets. The herein proposed protocol enables a rigorous, full ab initio treatment of Eu³⁺ complex, which can be easily extended to other Ln³⁺ ions.
