Catalyst Free Indirect Friedländer Synthesis of Substituted Quinolines from Alcohols in PEG-400

CuI nanoparticle-immobilized on a hybrid material composed of IRMOF-3 and a sulfonamide-based porous organic polymer as an efficient nanocatalyst for one-pot synthesis of 2,4-diaryl-quinolines

As a significant class of synthetic and natural products with multiple biological activities, quinolines are used in medical and electronic devices. In this study, a novel method is presented to synthesize 2,4-diarylquinoline derivatives via a simple one-pot multicomponent reaction between phenylacetylenes, aniline derivatives, and aldehydes in CH₃CN using IRMOF-3/PSTA/Cu. Notably, polymer/MOF is stabilized through a reaction between a sulfonamide-triazine-based porous organic polymer [poly (sulfonamide-triazine)](PSTA) and an amino-functionalized zinc metal-organic framework (IRMOF-3). Next, the prepared nanocomposites (IRMOF-3/PSTA) are modified using copper iodide nanoparticles (CuI NPs). Overall, the high product yields, facile recovery of nanocatalysts, short reaction times, and broad substrate range make this process environmentally friendly, practical, and economically justified.

Synthesis of 2-Aryl Acetophenones via Hydrobromination and Oxy-isomerization of (o-Arylethynyl)benzyl Alcohols

Hydrobromination and oxy-isomerization of (o-arylethynyl)benzyl alcohols to yield brominated aryl ketones were achieved with bromotrimethylsilane. The substrate scope suggested that vinyl carbocations, stabilized by the conjugated aryl groups, are the reaction intermediates. 1H-Isochromene was also detected by ¹H NMR, and an isolated 1H-isochromene was converted to the product when retreated with TMSBr. The formation of 1H-isochromene is equivalent to a 6-endo-dig cyclization and contrasts with the corresponding reactions under basic conditions, in which the 5-exo-dig process dominated.

Greener Synthesis of Nitrogen-Containing Heterocycles in Water, PEG, and Bio-Based Solvents

The solvents used in chemistry are a fundamental element of the environmental performance of processes in corporate and academic laboratories. Their influence on costs, health safety, and nature cannot be neglected. Quantitatively, solvents are the most abundant constituents of chemical transformations; therefore, acting on solvents and replacing standard solvents with safer products can have a great ecological impact. However, not all green solvents are suitable for the wide scope of organic chemistry reactions. A second point to consider is that 50% of pharmaceutical drugs are nitrogen heterocycles compounds. It therefore appeared important to provide an overview of the more ecological methodologies for synthesizing this class of compounds. In this review, all publications since 2000 that describe green reactions leading to the formation of nitrogen heterocycles using safe solvents were considered. We chose water, PEG, and bio-based solvents for their negligible toxicity. The synthesis of five-, six-, and seven-membered aromatic nitrogen heterocycles using green reactions reported in the literature to date is described.
