Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Steelworkers are more likely to have a higher prevalence of hyperuricemia due to their exposure to special occupational factors and dietary habits. The interrelationships of visceral adiposity index (VAI), hyperuricemia, and drinking tea remain uncertain. This study aimed to assess the association between VAI and hyperuricemia among steelworkers, and if drinking tea modified this association. METHODS A total of 9928 steelworkers from Hunan Hualing Xiangtan Iron and Steel Company participated in this cross-sectional study. All participants completed a questionnaire, received anthropometric measurements, and provided blood samples for biochemical testing. Three logistic regression models were used to analyze the association between VAI and hyperuricemia. RESULTS In this study, the prevalence of hyperuricemia was approximately 23.74% (males: 24.41%; females: 20.63%), and a positive correlation between VAI and hyperuricemia risk was observed. In multivariate logistic regression analysis, the risk of hyperuricemia increased 1.76 times (95% CI: 1.64-1.89) and 2.13 times (95% CI: 1.76-2.57) with the increase of ln VAI in males and females, respectively. For males, compared to quartile 1, the risk of hyperuricemia in the second, third, and fourth quartile of VAI were 1.75 (95% CI: 1.11-2.71), 2.56 (95% CI: 1.67-3.93) and 4.89 (95% CI: 3.22-7.43). For females, compared to quartile 1, the risk of hyperuricemia in the second, third, and fourth quartile of VAI were 1.99 (95% CI: 1.40-2.82), 2.92 (95% CI: 1.96-4.34) and 4.51 (95% CI: 2.89-7.02). Additionally, our study found that, compared with not consuming tea, drinking tea could reduce uric acid levels by 0.014 in male steelworkers (t = -2.051, p = 0.040), 0.020 in workers consuming smoked food (t = -2.569, p = 0.010), and 0.022 in workers consuming pickled food (t = -2.764, p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, VAI is positively correlated with hyperuricemia in steelworkers. Drinking tea may lower uric acid levels in male steelworkers and steelworkers who prefer smoked and pickled foods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Menopause significantly impacts the immune system. Postmenopausal women are more susceptible to infection. Nonetheless, the pattern of change in peripheral white blood cell counts around the menopause remains poorly understood. METHODS We conducted a prospective longitudinal cohort study with repeated measurements using Kailuan cohort study of 3632 Chinese women who participated in the first checkup (2006-2007) and reached their final menstrual period (FMP) by the end of the seventh checkup (2018-2020). Peripheral WBC count indicators included total white blood cells (TWBC), neutrophils (NEUT), lymphocytes (LYM), and monocytes (MON). Multivariable mixed effects regressions fitted piece-wise linear models to repeated measures of WBC count indicators as a function of time before or after the final menstrual period (FMP). Interaction and subgroup analysis were used to explore the effects of age and body mass index (BMI) on changes in WBC indicators around FMP. RESULTS WBC count indicators decreased before the FMP, and the reduction in TWBC, NEUT, and MON continued for 2 years following the FMP. LYM and NEUT declined during < -1 years and - 4 ∼ + 2 years relative to FMP, respectively. A reduction in MON was observed pre-FMP, extending continuously through the two-year period post-FMP. TWBC declined from - 3 to + 2 years relative to FMP, but both MON and TWBC increased during > + 2 years. The baseline age had an interaction effect on changes in WBC indicators during specific menopausal stages, except for TWBC. Individuals in different age subgroups showed distinct trajectories for NEUT, LYM and MON around the FMP. High baseline BMI had a synergistic effect on changes in specific menopause segments for TWBC, LYM, and MON. The impact of menopause on TWBC and LYM was postponed or counterbalanced in high BMI individuals. Individuals in three BMI subgroups experienced similar MON changes around FMP, and there were slight variations during < -4 years. CONCLUSIONS Menopause was associated with count changes of peripheral WBC. The trajectories of various WBC types differ around menopause. Age and BMI affected WBC trajectory around menopause. The menopause period may represent a window of opportunity to promote immune health in middle-aged women.

Abstract
Shift work has become increasingly common in modern society. Shift work has been associated with a range of negative health outcomes. Therefore, this 10-years retrospective cohort study, aimed to investigate the relationship between shift work and blood and metabolic parameters. This retrospective cohort study was conducted in a metal parts manufacturing industry in 2023. In this study, 204 shift workers and 204 day workers were examined. All the studied blood and metabolic parameters were collected by reviewing the medical records of all participants during a 10-years period (2013-2022). Moreover, the amounts of physical, chemical, and ergonomics harmful agents in the work environment were investigated. All the collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 25.0. The values of Body Mass Index (BMI), Red Blood Cell Count (RBC), Platelets Count (PLT), Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone Level (TSH), Fasting Blood Sugar Level (FBS), Creatinine, Triglyceride (TG), Liver Enzymes level (SGOT and SGPT), and Systolic Blood Pressure (SBP) were higher among the shift work employees, and a significant difference was observed between the values of these parameters between the two groups. The results of logistic regression showed that the highest effect of shift work was observed on the parameters of FBS, TG, SGPT, TSH, Physical activity, BMI, Sleep duration, PLT, and Sleep quality with beta coefficient values of 0.49, 0.33, 0.29, 0.29, 0.20, 0.18, 0.14, 0.13 and, 0.11, respectively (p-value < 0.01). The present study contributes to a growing body of evidence that blood and metabolic factors are likely to be influenced by shift work. These findings have important implications for policy makers, highlighting the need for interventions to mitigate the negative health effects of shift work on workers.

Abstract
Sleep is a vital process that impacts biological functions such as cell renewal, bone regeneration, and immune system support. Disrupted sleep can interrupt erythropoiesis, leading to fewer red blood cells, reduced haemoglobin concentration, and decreased haematocrit levels, potentially contributing to haematological disorders. This is particularly concerning for shift workers for example firefighters. While previous studies have explored sleep's adverse effects on various professions, research specific to firefighters is limited. This study investigates the relationship between sleep quality and haematological parameters among firefighters in Northeast Portugal. From a sample of 201 firefighters, variations in red blood cells, haemoglobin, and haematocrit values were linked to sleep quality. The study utilised non-parametric tests (Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney, Spearman's correlation) to explore the connection between sleep quality and haematological profile. The impact of covariates on haematological parameters was assessed using non-parametric ANCOVA (Quade's). A multiple regression analysis was employed to further understand how sleep quality and various confounding variables impact haematological levels. Findings suggest a negative link between sleep quality and haematological levels, meaning that as sleep quality deteriorates, there is a tendency for haematological levels to decrease, as indicated by Spearman's correlation (rRBC = -0.157, pRBC = 0.026; rHb = -0.158, pHb = 0.025; rHCT = -0.175, pHCT = 0.013). As observed in scientific literature, the correlation found suggests a possible inhibition of erythropoiesis, the process responsible for red blood cell production. Despite firefighters presenting a haematological profile within the reference range (RBC: 5.1 × 106/mm3 (SD ± 0.4), Hb: 15.6 g/dL (SD ± 1.3), 47% (SD ± 1.0), there is already an observable trend towards lower levels. The analysis of co-variables did not reveal a significant impact of sleep quality on haematological levels. In conclusion, this study underscores the importance of sleep quality in determining haematological parameters among firefighters. Future research should investigate the underlying mechanisms and long-term implications of poor sleep quality on firefighter health. Exploring interventions to enhance sleep quality is vital for evidence-based strategies promoting firefighter well-being.

Abstract
Background The lack of preceding research in Sudan emphasizes the importance of this study, which contributes critical data to the global understanding of sleep-related health effects. This study investigates the complex relationship between sleep deprivation and blood-related factors, particularly focusing on full blood count and coagulation parameters. Methods From January to March 2022, a case-control study was conducted in Kosti, Sudan. A control group of 11 healthy 23-33-year-olds (6 men and 5 women) had regular sleep patterns. Six men and five women ages 23-33 were chosen for this sleep-deprived case study. The case group was deprived of sleep from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. for three days and allowed to sleep normally during the day. Daily at 7:00 a.m., antecubital vein blood was drawn. The ACL 7000 coagulation analyzer and Sysmex fully automated hematology analyzers were used for coagulation and whole blood count analysis. Data analysis included descriptive and inferential approaches like the Mann-Whitney U test for group comparisons. Results The study found no significant differences in total white blood cell counts reported between case and control groups (p=0.898). The case group had a substantial drop in lymphocyte counts on day 3 (p=0.016). The third day showed significant differences in neutrophil and eosinophil levels (p=0.003 and 0.000, respectively). The difference in hemoglobin and hematocrit on day 3 was statistically significant (p=0.023). Platelet counts were stable. Both groups' prothrombin times were unaffected. On all three days, groups had significant differences in activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT) (p=0.004). Therefore, the intrinsic coagulation system may have changed. Conclusion This study demonstrates the complex link between sleep deprivation, coagulation indicators, and complete blood count. Monitoring blood indicators in poor sleep helps explain fundamental mechanisms and medicinal implications.

Abstract
Cigarette smoking is a major preventable cause of morbidity and mortality. While quitting smoking is the best option, switching from cigarettes to non-combustible alternatives (NCAs) such as e-vapor products is a viable harm reduction approach for smokers who would otherwise continue to smoke. A key challenge for the clinical assessment of NCAs is that self-reported product use can be unreliable, compromising the proper evaluation of their risk reduction potential. In this cross-sectional study of 205 healthy volunteers, we combined comprehensive exposure characterization with in-depth multi-omics profiling to compare effects across four study groups: cigarette smokers (CS), e-vapor users (EV), former smokers (FS), and never smokers (NS). Multi-omics analyses included metabolomics, transcriptomics, DNA methylomics, proteomics, and lipidomics. Comparison of the molecular effects between CS and NS recapitulated several previous observations, such as increased inflammatory markers in CS. Generally, FS and EV demonstrated intermediate molecular effects between the NS and CS groups. Stratification of the FS and EV by combustion exposure markers suggested that this position on the spectrum between CS and NS was partially driven by non-compliance/dual use. Abstract
OBJECTIVES One of the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease is obesity, particularly abdominal and visceral obesity. Another concern for it is inflammation. Both risk factors are interrelated as obesity is a state of subacute low-grade systemic inflammation. As neck circumference and waist-hip ratio are potential indicators of obesity, we wanted to compare the level of total leukocyte count in subjects with normal and high neck circumference and waist-hip ratio. We also wanted to observe whether there is any correlation between neck circumference and waist-hip ratio with total leukocyte count. METHODS We selected 62 subjects (30 males, and 32 females) for the study. Both males and females were categorized into groups of normal and high neck circumference and waist-hip ratios. The total leukocyte count was compared among the groups and we correlated neck circumference and waist-hip ratios with total leukocyte count. Statistical analysis was done with SPSS version 23.0. RESULTS We observed a statistically significant higher value of total leukocyte count in males with a high waist-hip ratio. But there was not a significant increase in TLC in males with high neck circumference. In females, the values were insignificant. On Pearson correlation, there was a negative correlation between neck circumference, waist-hip ratio, and total leukocyte count in both genders which is not significant. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that waist-hip ratio rather than neck circumference might be a proxy measure of a marker of inflammation in males.

Abstract
The white blood cell (WBC) count increases significantly in reaction to infections and certain chronic diseases. Shift employment increases the risk for chronic low-grade inflammation and the progression of several chronic diseases. The objective of this study was to systematically evaluate the evidence from studies on total and differential WBC counts in shift employees. A literature search was performed in PubMed®, Web of Science, and Scopus databases using keywords for research published before March 1, 2022. A meta-analysis was conducted for total and differential WBC counts using a random-effects approach. A total of 25 studies covering a sample of 37,708 day and shift employees were included in this review. The studies represented America, Europe, East Asia, and Middle East. A significant increase in the total counts (×109/L) of WBC [mean difference (MD) = 0.43; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.34-0.52; P < 0.001], lymphocytes (MD = 0.16; 95% CI: 0.02-0.30; P = 0.02), monocytes (MD = 0.04; 95% CI: 0-0.07; P = 0.03), and eosinophils (MD = 0.01; 95% CI: 0-0.01; P = 0.03) was observed in shift workers compared to the day counterparts. However, neutrophils and basophils were not significantly different between the groups. Shift work significantly increases the total and differential blood counts in peripheral circulation. Therefore, total and differential WBC counts represent a relatively inexpensive biomarker for diagnostics and prognostics of diseases in shift workers.

Abstract
Machine Learning is a powerful tool to discover hidden information and relationships in various data-driven research fields. Obesity is an extremely complex topic, involving biological, physiological, psychological, and environmental factors. One successful approach to the topic is machine learning frameworks, which can reveal complex and essential risk factors of obesity. Over the last two decades, the obese population (BMI of above 23) in Korea has grown. The purpose of this study is to identify risk factors that predict obesity using machine learning classifiers and identify the algorithm with the best accuracy among classifiers used for obesity prediction. This work will allow people to assess obesity risk from blood tests and blood pressure data based on the KNHANES, which used data constructed by the annual survey. Our data include a total of 21,100 participants (male 10,000 and female 11,100). We assess obesity prediction by utilizing six machine learning algorithms. We explore age- and gender-specific risk factors of obesity for adults (19-79 years old). Our results highlight the four most significant features in all age-gender groups for predicting obesity: triglycerides, ALT (SGPT), glycated hemoglobin, and uric acid. Our findings show that the risk factors for obesity are sensitive to age and gender under different machine learning algorithms. Performance is highest for the 19-39 age group of both genders, with over 70% accuracy and AUC, while the 60-79 age group shows around 65% accuracy and AUC. For the 40-59 age groups, the proposed algorithm achieved over 70% in AUC, but for the female participants, it achieved lower than 70% accuracy. For all classifiers and age groups, there is no big difference in the accuracy ratio when the number of features is more than six; however, the accuracy ratio decreased in the female 19-39 age group.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The long-term isolation, endogamy practices, and environmental adaptations have shaped the enormous human diversity in India. The genetic and morphological variations in mainland Indians are well studied. However, the data on the Indian Himalayan populations are scattered. Thus, the present study attempts to understand variations in the selected parameter among four Tibeto-Burman speaking ethnic tribal populations from the Darjeeling Hill Region (DHR) in the Eastern Himalaya Biodiversity Hotspot region of India. METHODS A total of 178 healthy male individuals (Lepcha 98, Sherpa 31, Bhutia 27, and Tibetans 22) living at an altitudinal range of 1467-2258 m above the sea level were studied for the 10 parameters namely, weight (kg), height (cm), body mass index (BMI) (kg/m2 ) systolic and diastolic pressure (mm of Hg), pulse rate (per minute), saturation of peripheral oxygen (SPO2 ) (%), hemoglobin (g/dl), hematocrit (HCT) (%), and blood glucose (mg/dl). The data was statistically analyzed using analysis of variance and multiple linear regression methods. RESULTS Our analysis revealed comparatively lower hemoglobin and HCT levels, and higher systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the Sherpas followed by the Tibetans. This may be reflecting the persistence of high-altitude adaptation signatures even in lowlands. Interestingly, the Tibetans differed significantly from other populations in terms of their higher body weight, height, and BMI. CONCLUSION Thus, our study showed the persistence of high altitude signatures in Tibetans and Sherpa inhabited the DHR. Additionally, we also observed significant differences in the anthropometric and physiological parameters among the Tibeto-Burman populations of the DHR.

Abstract
Height loss starting in middle age is reported to be associated with increased all-cause and cardiovascular mortality later in life. However, the mechanisms underlying this association are unclear. Hypoxia and oxidative stress, which are known causes of cardiovascular disease, could be reduced by hemoglobin. Therefore, hemoglobin could be inversely associated with height loss. However, high body mass index (BMI) is a known risk factor for intervertebral disc disorder, a known cause of height loss in adults. High BMI might confound the association between hemoglobin and height loss. Therefore, we performed analyses stratified by BMI status. To clarify the association between hemoglobin and height loss, we conducted a retrospective study of Japanese workers (6,471 men and 3,180 women) aged 40–74 years. Height loss was defined as being in the highest quintile of height decrease per year. In men overall and men with BMI <25 kg/m2, hemoglobin was significantly inversely associated with height loss; but no association was observed for men with high BMI (BMI ≥25 kg/m2) and for women. For men, after adjusting for known cardiovascular risk factors, adjusted odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for height loss with each 1 standard deviation (SD) increase in hemoglobin (1.0 g/dL for men and 0.8g/dL for women) were 0.89 (0.83, 0.95) for men overall, 0.82 (0.75, 0.89) for men who do not have high BMI, and 1.01 (0.92, 1.12) for men with high BMI. For women, the corresponding values were 0.97 (0.89, 1.06), 0.98 (0.89, 1.09), and 0.93 (0.75, 1.15) respectively. Hemoglobin is significantly inversely associated with height loss in men who do not have high BMI, but not in men with high BMI or women. These results help clarify the mechanisms underlying height loss, which has been reported to be associated with a higher risk of mortality in adults.

Abstract
Anemia manifested as reduced red blood cell (RBC) amounts or hemoglobin levels has been associated with lower cardiorespiratory fitness. However, the relationship of smaller RBC with physical fitness was unknown. We included 2933 non-anemic military males (hemoglobin levels: 11.1-15.9 g/dL and mean corpuscular volume (MCV) <100 fL) in Taiwan during 2014. Aerobic fitness was assessed by time for a 3000-meter run, and anaerobic fitness was evaluated by numbers of sit-ups and push-ups, each performed within 2 minutes. Multiple linear and logistic regression models adjusting for age, service specialty, lipid profiles, and hemoglobin levels were used to determine the associations. Microcytosis and normocytosis were defined as MCV ≤ 70 fL (n = 190) and MCV > 70 fL (n = 2743), respectively. The linear regression shows that as compared with microcytosis, normocytosis was associated with more numbers of sit-ups performed within 2 minutes (β = 1.51, P-value = 0.02). The logistic regression also reveals that those males with microcytosis had higher probability as the worst 10% performers in the 2-minute push-up test (odds ratio: 1.91, 95% confidence intervals: 1.18-3.12). By contrast, there was no association of microcytosis with 3000-meter running time. Our study suggests that non-anemic microcytosis was associated with lower anaerobic fitness but not with aerobic fitness. Whether the causative factors for microcytosis such as iron deficiency status and thalassemia trait unavailable in the study might account for the relationship needs further investigations.

Background Increasing evidence suggests an association between lifestyle and white blood cell (WBC) count; however, no study has examined the effects of lifestyle associations on hematological parameters. The aim of this study was to examine the association between lifestyle factors and hematological parameters in a large population‐based sample of Chinese male steelworkers. Methods This study included 3189 male workers at a steel plant who responded to a cross‐sectional questionnaire on basic attributes, lifestyle, and sleep. All workers in the plant underwent periodic health checkups. Hematological parameters were also examined at the checkup. Results Stepwise linear regression analyses showed that smoking, poor sleep, shift work, and obesity were all significant factors associated with WBC count. Obesity was independently associated with RBC count. Furthermore, smoking and obesity were associated with hemoglobin, and smoking, poor sleep, and obesity were independently associated with hematocrit. Moreover, smoking was the main factor associated with MCV and MCH. When the subjects were divided into quartiles according to WBC count, RBC count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, MCH, and increased WBC count were associated with smoking, poor sleep, shift work, and obesity. Increased hemoglobin was associated with smoking and obesity. Furthermore, an increased RBC count was associated with obesity, and increased hematocrit was associated with smoking, poor sleep, and obesity. Similarly, increased MCV and MCH were also associated with smoking. Conclusion This study indicates that lifestyle factors may exert an important effect on hematological parameters (eg, WBC count, RBC count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, MCV, and MCH).
