Exploring effects of childhood parentification on adult-depressive symptoms in Korean college students

Depressive and anxiety symptom trajectories in Polish adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic and the outbreak of war in Ukraine: uncovering the role of family relations

INTRODUCTION

The aim of the study was to investigate longitudinal trajectories of change in anxiety and depression symptoms in Polish adolescents during the second year of the COVID-19 pandemic and after the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. Additionally, we aimed to identify risk/protective factors and outcomes associated with these trajectories.

METHOD

We collected data in three waves between November 2021 and May 2022. Adolescents (N = 281 in the first wave) completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9, the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7, the Filial Responsibility Scale for Youth, and questions related to the COVID-19 pandemic and war in Ukraine.

RESULTS

We identified three trajectories of depressive symptoms: resilient with low, stable symptoms (71% of participants), chronically elevated symptoms (11%), and acute symptoms followed by recovery (18%). We distinguished two trajectories of anxiety symptoms: resilient (75%) and chronic (25%). Non-resilient trajectories were predicted by higher levels of familial unfairness (perceived lack of equality and reciprocity in the family), relationship difficulties at school and at home, older age, and poor socioeconomic status. Chronic depressive and anxiety symptoms were associated with higher war-related concerns.

DISCUSSION

These findings can inform preventive and therapeutic interventions for at-risk adolescents to reduce negative long-term outcomes of social crises.

Parentification in Polish Adolescents: a Prevalence Study

This study investigated the prevalence of parentification in a nationwide cross-sectional study. There were N = 47,984 Polish adolescents aged 12-21 (M = 15.60; SD = 1.98; female 52.7%, male 47.3%). The results indicated that more adolescents experienced emotional parentification (toward parents 35.9%; toward siblings 25.2%) as compared to instrumental parentification (toward parents 7.2%; toward siblings 15.5%), which is noteworthy, since emotional parentification is the most detrimental form of parentification in USA samples. Overall, 15.5% of the participants reported a sense of injustice related to their family caregiving roles and 61.2% reported satisfaction related to their family caregiving roles. The results are important given the dearth of prevalence studies.

Factors associated with psychosocial problems in Korean nursing and non-nursing students during the COVID-19 pandemic

Background

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has changed our lives in many ways, including school closures and social distancing practices. These abrupt life changes may have led to psychosocial problems in college students. This study aimed to identify the factors associated with psychosocial problems in South Korean nursing and non-nursing students.

Methods

This descriptive cross-sectional survey was conducted with 139 nursing and 147 non-nursing students (N = 286) between August 6 and October 30, 2020. We investigated participants' general characteristics (that is, sociodemographic and health-promoting behaviors), sensitivity to COVID-19 infection, COVID-19 pandemic response indicators, and psychosocial problems. The factors associated with psychosocial problems were determined using multiple regression analysis.

Results

Among the COVID-19 pandemic response indicators, perceived health status during the COVID-19 pandemic was verified as a factor associated with psychosocial problems in nursing (β =  - 5.831, p < .001) and non-nursing students (β =  - 8.513, p < .001). Perceived stress (β = 1.263, p = .045), trust in policy (β = .892, p < .001), and religion (β =  - 1.424, p = .004) were verified as correlates of psychosocial problems in non-nursing students.

Conclusion

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the stakeholders can use our study results to identify students experiencing psychosocial problems and subsequently as a theoretical background for developing intervention programs for those at a high risk of psychosocial problems. Additionally, it can be used as primary data for future research and practice regarding COVID-19 guidelines among students.

Development and Validation of the Family Relationship Assessment Scale in Korean College Students' Families

The nature of family relationships is a critical measure for healthcare professionals who work with families. In particular, non-Western cultural groups display a higher level of collectivism that emphasizes relationships between family members. This paper reports the development and psychometric testing of a new scale, the Korean Family Relationship Assessment Scale (FRAS). Using DeVellis' Guidelines in Scale Development, a pool of 40 items was created after a review of the literature, followed by an assessment for content validity by six experts. Both exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted with data from a sample of 217 Korean family triads (father, mother, and college-aged offspring) (N = 651). The final evaluation yielded three factors with 15 items: family support, family conflict, and family togetherness. Since the FRAS demonstrated good internal consistency and validity, it would be able to facilitate research on the relationships between family support, conflict, togetherness, and health. Applying this new instrument in theory-based research may contribute to knowledge about the role of the family in the health and well-being of family members within a Korean context. For clinical practice, this culturally sensitive and valid instrument has the potential to measure changes in family relationships after family therapy or interventions.
