Mediating role of dyadic satisfaction on social support and health outcomes in a sample of military family care-givers

LAY SUMMARY

Military family caregivers (MFCs) can experience many health-related challenges associated with caregiving responsibilities. Perceived support from a spouse or partner can influence dyadic satisfaction and health outcomes among those who care for a spouse or partner. This study examined the relations among social support, dyadic satisfaction, and mental (i.e., depressive and anxiety symptoms) and physical (i.e., somatic symptoms) health outcomes in a sample of MFCs. This sample consisted of 104 MFCs who were the spouse or partner of their care recipient. The findings indicate that more support predicted greater dyadic satisfaction and greater dyadic satisfaction predicted fewer anxiety symptoms. This study highlights the importance of considering relationship-focused contributors to mental health outcomes.

Linking Disaster Risk Reduction and Healthcare in Locations with Limited Accessibility: Challenges and Opportunities of Participatory Research

Disaster risk reduction and healthcare support each other, including the mitigation of further harm after illness or injury. These connections are particularly relevant in locations which have permanent or temporary limited accessibility. In these circumstances, people are required to be self-sufficient in providing emergency and long-term healthcare with limited resources. Planning and preparing to mitigate further harm after illness or injury from disasters (disaster risk reduction) must include people living and working in locations with limited accessibility, meaning that participatory research can be used. The challenges and opportunities of enacting participatory research in such contexts have not been thoroughly examined. The research question of this paper is therefore, "What challenges and opportunities occur when participatory research links disaster risk reduction and healthcare to mitigate illness and injury in locations with limited accessibility?" To answer this research question, the method used is a qualitative evidence synthesis, combined with an overview paper approach. Two principal themes of challenges and opportunities are examined: defining the data and collecting the data. The themes are explored in theory and then through contextual examples. The conclusion is that an overarching challenge is divergent goals of research and actions that, when recognized, lead to opportunities for improved connections between disaster risk reduction and healthcare.

Rapid telepsychology deployment during the COVID-19 pandemic: A special issue commentary and lessons from primary care psychology training

Objective

This article positions the special issue on telepsychology amidst the COVID‐19 pandemic, which has dramatically accelerated the adoption and dissemination of telepsychology.

Method

The article makes general observations about the themes emerging in the special issue with considerations for application, training, theory‐driven research, and policy. It then presents as a case example the rapid deployment during the pandemic of telepsychology doctoral training and services at the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) Primary Care Psychology Collaborative.

Results

Facilitators to VCU telepsychology deployment included trainee and supervisor resources, strong telepsychology training, and prior experience. Barriers to overcome included limited clinic capacity, scheduling, technology, and accessibility and diversity issues. Lessons learned involved presenting clinical issues, supervision, and working with children and adolescents.

Conclusions

Telepsychology is crucial for psychological service provision, during the COVID‐19 pandemic more than ever, and that is unlikely to change as psychologists and patients increasingly continue to appreciate its value.
