Mental health of individuals who are deaf during COVID-19: Depression, anxiety, aggression, and fear

A comparison of psychosocial health among individuals with different levels of hearing ability during the COVID-19 pandemic

OBJECTIVE

This study assessed the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on psychosocial health among individuals with different levels of hearing ability.

DESIGN

For this cross-sectional study, adults completed an online digits-in-noise test and survey. Participants were categorised into "good", "insufficient", or "poor" hearing groups. Survey questions included topics on depression, anxiety, distress, somatisation, and loneliness levels. Multiple logistic, linear, and negative binomial regressions examined differences in psychosocial health between hearing groups. Moderation analyses identified vulnerable subgroups. Mediation analyses examined mediating effects of pandemic measures on hearing ability and psychosocial health.

STUDY SAMPLE

Eight-hundred and sixty-five adults with or without hearing impairment.

RESULTS

Individuals with poor hearing had a higher odds of having elevated anxiety levels and had higher somatisation levels compared to participants with good hearing. Chronic diseases significantly moderated the relationship between poor hearing ability and loneliness. Difficulties with communicating through facemasks, 1.5 m distance, plastic screens, and during video calls significantly mediated the relationships between hearing ability, anxiety and somatisation.

CONCLUSIONS

Results highlight the elevated anxiety and somatisation levels experienced among individuals with hearing impairment during the COVID-19 pandemic. More awareness is needed of the negative impact pandemic measures can have on psychosocial health during future health crises.

Social perception in deaf individuals: A meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies

Deaf individuals may report difficulties in social interactions. However, whether these difficulties depend on deafness affecting social brain circuits is controversial. Here, we report the first meta-analysis comparing brain activations of hearing and (prelingually) deaf individuals during social perception. Our findings showed that deafness does not impact on the functional mechanisms supporting social perception. Indeed, both deaf and hearing control participants recruited regions of the action observation network during performance of different social tasks employing visual stimuli, and including biological motion perception, face identification, action observation, viewing, identification and memory for signs and lip reading. Moreover, we found increased recruitment of the superior-middle temporal cortex in deaf individuals compared with hearing participants, suggesting a preserved and augmented function during social communication based on signs and lip movements. Overall, our meta-analysis suggests that social difficulties experienced by deaf individuals are unlikely to be associated with brain alterations but may rather depend on non-supportive environments.

A systematic review of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of adolescents and young people with disabilities aged 15-29 years

BACKGROUND

The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the psychological burden on young people around the world and may have disproportionately large impacts for young people with disabilities. This review aims to systematically review the quantitative evidence on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of young people with disabilities and evaluate the quality of included studies.

METHODS

A systematic search was conducted using 5 electronic databases. The quality of the studies was assessed using the SIGN risk of bias assessment tool. A narrative synthesis was performed to synthesize the results of included studies.

RESULTS

The initial search yielded 1935 studies, of which two met the eligibility criteria, one longitudinal study and one cross-sectional study, both assessed to be of low quality. In the cross-sectional study, young people with intellectual and developmental disabilities self-reported an increase in mental health symptoms. The longitudinal study found no evidence of a change in mental health symptoms from pre-pandemic to during the pandemic among young people with autism spectrum disorder, although these individuals reported negative impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on their emotional or mental health.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings of this review provide some weak evidence of a negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of young people with disabilities. Importantly, the findings highlight the lack of research in this area. More research is needed to investigate the impact of the pandemic on the mental health of young disabled people, in order for governments to develop emergency preparedness plans to safeguard the well-being of this population.

"Effect of the SARS-COV-2 pandemic outbreak on the emergency department admission for an acute psychiatric condition"

Preliminary evidence seems to suggest a reduction in absolute terms of Emergency Department (ED) admissions for an acute psychiatric condition during the first months of the pandemic. The study aimed to test through a long-term time analysis the effect of COVID-19 on changes in ED visits for an acute psychiatric condition. A quasi-experimental interrupted time series analysis of admissions for acute psychiatric conditions to the Emergency Department of the Merano Hospital (Italy) was performed from January 2017 to August 2021. The main outcome was the monthly rate of ED accesses for an acute psychiatric condition reported per 1000 general admissions. The pandemic outbreak was used as an intervention point. 4398 ED admissions for an acute psychiatric condition were registered. The rate of monthly admissions over total admissions increased from a mean of March 17, 1000 (SD 2.9) admissions per month in the pre-COVID-19 era to September 22, 1000 (SD 4.5) in the pandemic months, p < 0.001. In March 2020, the pandemic outbreak led to a significant increase in ED visits for an acute psychiatric condition (p = 0.013) and suicide attempts (p = 0.029), and to an increased need for pharmacological sedation in ED (p = 0.001). During the pandemic, although admissions and hospitalizations showed a non-significant decreasing trend, suicide attempts increased steadily and significantly. The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic caused a major increase in rates of admission to the ED for an acute psychiatric condition.

The Effect of Fear of the COVID-19 on Depression Among Chinese Outbound Students Studying Online in China Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic Period: The Role of Resilience and Social Support

Objective: The present study focused on examining fear of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is correlated with depression and explored the potential role of resilience and social support on the association between fear of the COVID-19 (FoC) and depression among Chinese outbound students studying online in China amid the COVID-19 pandemic period. Methods: A total of 476 Chinese outbound students from different universities worldwide, currently studying via online mode in China, completed an online survey including measures on FoC, resilience, social support, and depression. Results: (1) Fear of the COVID-19 was positively correlated with depression and negatively correlated with resilience and social support. Both resilience and social support were negatively correlated with depression. Social support showed a positive correlation with resilience. (2) The effect of FoC on depression mainly occurred through two paths: the mediating effect of resilience and the moderating effect of resilience. However, the moderating effect of social support on the association between FoC and depression was not sustained in this study. Conclusion: This study indicated the mediating and moderating effects of resilience on the association between FoC and depression among Chinese outbound students studying online in China during the COVID-19 pandemic period. The current findings confirmed that resilience has significant implications in preventing negative mental states under the COVID-19 context among this particular group.
