Abstract
OBJECTIVE The most common causes of plantar and heel pain are plantar fasciitis and calcaneal spurs, and they often co-exist. Surgery is a recognized treatment for refractory plantar fasciitis. However, few studies have proposed treatment options for patients with metatarsophalangeal fasciitis with bone spurs. Accordingly, this study's purpose was to propose a four-step surgical regimen, and to improve the surgical outcome of plantar fasciitis with osteophytes and to establish a procedure for surgical treatment. METHODS Retrospective analysis of 45 patients suffering from plantar fasciitis with bone spurs from 2020 to 2023. All patients underwent a four-step procedure, including plantar fascia release, calcaneal spur grinding, inflammatory tissue removal, and calcaneal burr decompression. The imaging parameters and functional scores were recorded before and after the operation. The objective evaluation included the measurement of calcaneal spur length on radiographs. Clinical evaluation included the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS), the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and the Foot and Ankle Outcome Scale (FAOS). Measurement data that conformed to normal distribution were expressed as (x2 ± s), and pre-and postoperative AOFAS, FAOS, and VAS scores were compared using repeated-measures ANOVA, and preoperative and postoperative spur lengths were compared using paired t-tests. RESULTS The 45 patients were followed up for 3 to 30 months, (17.72 ± 8.53) months, at final follow-up, the patient's AOFAS score improved from preoperative (74.93 ± 5.56) to (94.78 ± 3.98), FAOS score increased from preoperative (76.42 ± 3.37) to (96.16 ± 2.74), the VAS score decreased from (3.18 ± 0.54) to (1.07 ± 1.20) (p < 0.05), the length of spur decreased from (0.72 ± 1.81) cm to (0.23 ± 1.19) cm, and there were significant differences before and after operation (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION The four-step surgical regimen is an appropriate and effective surgical procedure to treat plantar fasciitis with bone spurs.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Corticosteroid injections have been typically used for the management of plantar fasciitis with apparently good clinical outcomes; however, there is no information of the effect of corticosteroids on the thickness of the plantar fascia which is typically altered in this pathology. We aimed determine whether treatment with corticosteroid injections induces plantar fascia thickness changes in plantar fasciitis. METHODS MEDLINE, Embase, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCT) reporting the use of corticosteroid injection to treat plantar fasciitis to July 2022. Studies must have reported plantar fascia thickness measurement. The risk of bias in all studies was assessed with the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0 tool. Meta-analysis was conducted using a random-effects model and the generic inverse variance method. RESULTS Data from 17 RCT (including 1109 subjects) were collected. The follow-up period ranged from one to six months. Most studies measured the thickness of the plantar fascia at the insertion into the calcaneus using ultrasound. Pooled analysis revealed that corticosteroid injections had no significant effect on plantar fascia thickness (weighted mean differences [WMD], 0.06 mm [95% CI: -0.17, 0.29]; p = 0.61) or pain relief (WMD, 0.12 cm [95% CI: -0.36, 0.61]; p = 0.62) above active controls. CONCLUSION Corticosteroid injections do not perform better than other common interventions in terms of a decrease of plantar fascia thickness and pain relief for plantar fasciitis.

Abstract
Pain represents a common symptom of several diseases and is often associated with a reduction in rehabilitation outcomes and recovery. The effectiveness of pain alleviation by botulinum toxin has been recently demonstrated. We searched in PubMed the papers about this topic published in the last ten years, and we selected clinical trials, guidelines, meta-analyses, reviews, and systematic reviews. We used different approaches: multiperspective presentation, lexical evaluation, and systematic review. The systematic review was only performed for the randomized controlled trials. We predominantly found reviews and trials about the rehabilitation of stroke/brain injury and epicondylitis. The most common outcome measures were pain, function, and spasticity. Among the common words, pain was the most frequent and the terms were grouped into different families, especially concerning the outcomes. Rehabilitation showed a relatively low frequency. Finally, the systematic review showed moderate-low levels of bias which confirms the effectiveness of botulinum toxin for pain treatment. The current literature about botulinum toxin is wide and globally diffuse but with some limitations in study strategies and clearness in the formal presentation. The evidence justifies the use of botulinum toxin in treating pain in different diseases.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Treatment of chronic plantar fasciitis is challenging given that there are various of available treatment options with no clear gold standard. The aim of the study was to examine the dose-escalation effect of rESWT on the biomechanical parameters of the plantar fascia and pain ailments. Materials and Methods: In the experimental group (n = 30), the intensity of the shock wave was increased every two subsequent treatment sessions. In the control group (n = 32), the treatment parameters were not changed. In both groups, six treatments were performed, with two treatment sessions a week. In order to assess the biomechanical parameters of the plantar fascia, myotonometric measurements were performed. The pain intensity was assessed using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS). Results: The tension of the plantar fascia attachment in the experimental group decreased from 27.69 ± 2.06 [Hz] before treatment to 26.29 ± 1.69 [Hz] after treatment (p = 0.009) and to 26.03 ± 2.15 [Hz] 1 month after the beginning of treatment (p = 0.003). In the control group, the frequency results did not change significantly (p > 0.05). Flexibility increased in both groups. The test results before treatment and 1 month after the beginning of the treatment showed statistical significance in the experimental group (p = 0.001) vs. (p = 0.002) in the control group. The differences were not statistically significant between groups (p > 0.05). The assessment of pain intensity carried out 1 month after the end of treatment in the experimental group amounted to 3.14 ± 2.28 points, which was statistically significantly lower compared to that in the control group, where it amounted to 5.14 ± 1.92 points. (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The use of rESWT performed with an increasing intensity of impact during subsequent treatment procedures demonstrated greater effectiveness in improving the biomechanical parameters of the plantar fascia and was also more effective in reducing the pain ailments. Our results are encouraging. The dose escalation in the treatment cycle is worth considering. To prove that this method of treatment is more effective, a randomized controlled trial should be carried out on a representative sample.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A lack of data exist about the effectiveness of active treatments for persistent plantar heel pain (PPHP). OBJECTIVES To compare short-term functional and clinical effects of a 4-week barefoot or shod treadmill walking program for people with PPHP. METHODS A single-blinded clinical trial randomized 52 participants with PPHP into either a barefoot walking group (BWG), or a shod walking group (SWG). All participants received therapeutic ultrasound. Outcomes were measured at baseline (t0), following 4 weeks of treatment (t1), and at 1-month follow-up (t2). The SF-36 functional questionnaire score was the main outcome. Secondary outcomes were self-reported and clinically-assessed pain provocation levels, pressure pain thresholds and pain tolerance. Treadmill walking time and speed were measured at t0 and t1; people also recorded the time spent walking each day in a diary. RESULTS The BWG exhibited significant improvements in all SF-36 items (except "emotional well-being") (P < 0.05), whereas the SWG exhibited improvements only in "pain" and "health change" items (P = 0.0001; effect size 0.13-0.94). Greater improvements were observed in the BWG than the SWG for "physical function" (P = 0.019) and "role limitations due to physical health" items (P = 0.035). Both groups demonstrated significant improvements in pain, with greater improvements in the BWG (P = 0.0001; effect size 0.89). Only the BWG showed significant improvements in pain pressure thresholds (P < 0.05; effect size 0.70) and pain tolerance (P < 0.001; effect size 0.67). Both groups significantly increased their speed and time spent walking on the treadmill (BWG Δ=19.7 min and Δ=1.7 km/h; SWG Δ=16.7 min and Δ=1.1 km/h) and time outdoors (SWG ∆=38.2 min/week; BWG mean ∆=48.5 min/week) (P < 0.001). All clinical tests of pain were significantly less positive in the BWG at all time points (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Both walking programs benefited people with PPHP by alleviating pain and improving function and quality of life. Greater improvements were observed in the BWG than the SWG overall.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and botulinum toxin type A (BTX-A) injections have proven effective in clinical trials for plantar fasciitis treatment but have not been directly compared. We aimed to compare clinical outcomes in patients undergoing PRP or BTX-A injections. METHODS We performed a randomised controlled trial (59 patients; 1-year follow-up) to assess efficacy, using pain and functional scales (VAS, AOFAS Hindfoot-scale and FAAM questionnaire) and fascia thickness reduction, in control and single ultrasound-guided BTX-A or PRP injection groups. RESULTS The BTX-A group showed better results at 1-month after treatment. Conversely, the PRP injection was more effective in the long-term, with significant pain reduction and functional improvement. Plantar fascia thickness significantly reduced from months 1 and 3 in the PRP and BTX-A groups, respectively. CONCLUSION PRP and BTX-A injections are effective in patients with plantar fasciitis with BTX-A achieving better short-term pain reduction and PRP better long-term results. Abstract
Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the results of extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT), corticosteroid injection (CI), and kinesio taping (KT) in terms of pain and function in plantar fasciitis (PF). Patients and methods In this prospective study, 90 feet of 64 patients (11 males, 53 females; mean age: 38.3±10.4 years; range, 22 to 70 years) who presented with chronic PF between November 2021 and March 2022 were evaluated. The patients were randomized to three groups, with 30 feet in each group: the CI group, the ESWT group, and the KT group. Each group received only the respective treatment modalities assigned to their group. Pain assessment of the patients before the treatment and at six weeks, three months, and six months was evaluated with the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), and their functions were evaluated with the American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score. Results There was no statistical difference in the demographic data (age, body mass index, and VAS; all p>0.05). At six weeks, VAS was statistically significantly lower in the CI group compared to the other groups (p<0.001), but there was no difference in AOFAS between the groups (p=0.666). At three months, there was no statistical difference between the groups regarding VAS (p=0.311), while the AOFAS was higher in the ESWT group (p=0.006). At six months, VAS was lower (p<0.001) and AOFAS was higher (p=0.003) in the ESWT group. Conclusion All three commonly used treatment modalities, ESWT, CI, and KT, are effective in reducing pain and increasing function in chronic PF. However, while CIs can be more effective in relieving pain in the early period, the most significant improvement at the end of the sixth month was achieved by ESWT.

Abstract
The pathogenesis of plantar fasciitis is unclear, which hampers the development of an effective treatment. The altered fate of plantar fascia stem/progenitor cells (PFSCs) under overuse-induced inflammation might contribute to the pathogenesis. This study aimed to isolate rat PFSCs and compared their stem cell-related properties with bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs). The effects of inflammation and intensive mechanical loading on PFSCs' functions were also examined. We showed that plantar fascia-derived cells (PFCs) expressed common MSC surface markers and embryonic stemness markers. They expressed lower Nanog but higher Oct4 and Sox2, proliferated faster and formed more colonies compared to BMSCs. Although PFCs showed higher chondrogenic differentiation potential, they showed low osteogenic and adipogenic differentiation potential upon induction compared to BMSCs. The expression of ligament markers was higher in PFCs than in BMSCs. The isolated PFCs were hence PFSCs. Both IL-1β and intensive mechanical loading suppressed the mRNA expression of ligament markers but increased the expression of inflammatory cytokines and matrix-degrading enzymes in PFSCs. In summary, rat PFSCs were successfully isolated. They had poor multi-lineage differentiation potential compared to BMSCs. Inflammation after overuse altered the fate and inflammatory status of PFSCs, which might lead to poor ligament differentiation of PFSCs and extracellular matrix degeneration. Rat PFSCs can be used as an in vitro model for studying the effects of intensive mechanical loading-induced inflammation on matrix degeneration and erroneous stem/progenitor cell differentiation in plantar fasciitis.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the effects of different therapeutic interventions that have ever been evaluated in randomized controlled trials on pain due to plantar fasciitis. METHODS We searched different electronic databases until September 2022. Mean differences (MDs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation was used to evaluate the overall certainty evidence. RESULTS A total of 236 studies met the study criteria, including 15,401 patients. Botulinum toxin MD -2.14 (CI: -4.15, -0.14), micronized dehydrated human amnion/chorion membrane injection MD -3.31 (CI: -5.54, -1.08), dry needling MD -2.34 (CI: -4.64, -0.04), low-dye taping MD -3.60 (CI: -4.16, -3.03), low-level laser therapy MD -2.09 (CI: -2.28, -1.90), myofascial releases MD -1.79 (CI: -2.63, -0.94), platelet-rich plasma MD -2.40 (CI: -4.16, -0.63), radiofrequency MD -2.47 (CI: -4.65, -0.29), and stretching MD -1.14 (CI: -2.02, -0.26) resulted in being effective treatments for pain when compared to the control in the short term. In the medium and long term, only extracorporeal shock wave therapy MD -0.97 (CI: -1.13, -0.81)/MD -2.49 (CI: -3.17, -1.82) was effective for improving pain when compared to the control. CONCLUSIONS Considering the available studies, this systematic review and meta-analysis showed that different therapeutic interventions seem to be useful strategies for improving pain in patients with plantar fasciitis. In the medium and long term, only extracorporeal shock wave therapy was effective in improving pain when compared to the control.

Abstract
Introduction Plantar fasciitis is a common musculoskeletal problem in Orthopaedic practice. Heel pain caused due to plantar fasciitis, if persistent, can cause distress to the patient, so the correct intervention at the right time is needed. Plantar fasciitis is also common in the rural population. Objectives To compare the efficacy of local injection of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and corticosteroid (CS) (methylprednisolone) in patients with chronic plantar fasciitis, and to evaluate the safety, side effect and complications of two different modalities of treatment. Materials and methods The study period was between August 2018 and September 2020. After obtaining proper written consent, 110 patients, who were above the age of 18 years and suffering from plantar fasciitis for more than three months, were included in the study. The patient characteristics including gender, age, weight, history of heel pain, duration of symptoms and types of prior treatment were noted. All the 110 patients were subjected to four parameter assessments before administration of the PRP/CS injections. Out of the 110 patients, 55 patients received PRP injection and 55 received CS - 2 ml (40 mg) methylprednisolone with 2 ml of sterile water injections. Post administration of injections, the patients' clinical, radiological, subjective and functional outcomes were assessed at the first, third and sixth month by using the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), Foot and Ankle Outcome Instrument Core Scale (FAI), Roles and Maudsley Scores (RMS), American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) ankle-hind foot scale and ultrasonogram of plantar fascia thickness. Discussion In this study, 110 patients were screened and evaluated. Out of these 110 patients, five patients who received PRP and five who received CS were lost for follow-up. Out of the 110 patients, 59 were females and 41 were males. The majority of the patients were in the BMI range of 18.5 to 24.9, with a mean BMI of 23.6. Comparing the results in both the groups reflected an improvement in the group of patients who received PRP injections. Two patients had post-operative complications (superficial infection) in the PRP injection group, while 10 patients had post-procedure complications (five patients developed superficial infections, three patients developed skin depigmentation, and two patients had atrophy of fat pad) in the corticosteroid injections (CSI) group. Infections subsided in all the patients as observed during subsequent follow-up. Conclusion This study shows that PRP administration is a good method of managing patients suffering from chronic plantar fasciitis, presenting with some discomfort following activity, with more than three months of symptoms and with a VAS score of more than 6 and plantar fascia thickness of 5 mm and failed conservative management. This is evidenced by a comparison of AOFAS, FAI score and thickness of plantar fascia using an ultrasonogram before and after the procedure. This study reflects better treatment outcomes with PRP injection compared to local steroid infiltration. This is the largest series of cases studied compared to other previously available studies in the literature. PRP injections may thus be used as a superior alternative to the already available treatments for chronic heel pain.

Abstract
(1) Background: Plantar fasciitis (PF) is the most common cause of heel pain in adults. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a minimally invasive treatments commonly used for treating PF. Our aim is to provide a complete overview of which treatments have been compared to ESWT, with a focus on the modalities that have been used. (2) Methods: A thorough search of the literature was performed on Medline via Pubmed, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) of the Cochrane Library and Physiotherapy Evidence Databases (PEDro) up to 18 November 2021. In the study were included only systematic reviews and meta-analysis in English language, published from 2010 to date. (3) Results: A total of 14 systematic reviews and meta-analysis were included in the umbrella review. A total of eight studies compared the efficacy of ESWT treatment with placebo, three studies compared ESWT with another therapy (two studies compared ESWT and corticosteroids, one study ESWT and ultrasound therapy), and three studies had more than one comparison. (4) Conclusions: When compared to placebo, ESWT demonstrated to be effective. More randomized trials with specific comparisons between different types and intensity of SW are needed to obtain more precise information on SW effectiveness.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) versus dextrose prolotherapy on pain and foot functions in patients with chronic plantar fasciitis with a prospective randomized-controlled trial. A total of 29 patients in whom conservative care failed were enrolled for the study after the clinical and ultrasonographic assessment. The patients were randomly assigned to receive ESWT (ESWT group, n = 15) or dextrose prolotherapy (dextrose prolotherapy group, n = 14). ESWT group received 1800 to 2000 focused shock waves (session of 0.20-0.30 mJ/mm2 with a frequency of 4-6 Hz) followed by soft tissue 3000 to 3500 radial pulses (session of 1.8-3.0 bar with a frequency of 15-21 Hz). Dextrose prolotherapy group underwent an injection of 5 ml 15% dextrose solution with 2% lidocaine. ESWT and dextrose prolotherapy were repeated 3 times by 2 weeks apart. A 100-mm Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for overall and morning pain, Foot Function Index (FFI) and the Roles and Maudsley Scale score (RMS) were assessed at baseline, 6 weeks, and 12 weeks after the last intervention. Overall VAS, Morning VAS, RMS and FFI scores improved significantly in both treatment groups at 6 weeks and 12 weeks compared to baseline (p < .001). Comparison of changes in overall VAS, Morning VAS, RMS and FFI scores did not show a significant difference between the groups at each time point (p > .05) In our study dextrose prolotherapy and ESWT had similar effectiveness in patients with chronic plantar fasciitis who have not respond to conservative care. The results showed ESWT and dextrose prolotherapy were not superior to each other.

Abstract
The number of systematic review and meta-analyses on plantar fasciitis is expanding. The purpose of this review was to provide a comprehensive summary of reviews on the topic pertaining to plantar fasciitis, identify any conflicting and inconsistent results, and propose future research direction. A qualitative review of all systematic reviews and meta-analyses related to plantar fasciitis up to February 2021 was performed using PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Database. A total of 1052 articles were initially identified and 96 met the inclusion criteria. Included articles were summarized and divided into the following topics: epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment. While the majority of reviews had high level of heterogeneity and included a small number of studies, there was general consensus on certain topics, such as BMI as a risk factor for plantar fasciitis and extracorporeal shockwave therapy as an effective mode of therapy. A qualitative summary of systematic reviews and meta-analyses published on plantar fasciitis provides a single source of updated information for clinicians. Evidence on topics such as the epidemiology, exercise therapy, or cost-effectiveness of treatment options for plantar fasciitis are lacking and warrant future research.

Abstract
Plantar fasciitis is a common condition that causes foot pain. While shockwave therapy has been shown to provide successful results, comparative outcomes from different forms of shockwave therapy have yet to be described for this condition. In this retrospective cohort study, we describe findings from a quality improvement initiative assessing safety and functional outcomes for patients with plantar fasciitis treated with radial shockwave therapy (n = 20) or radial and focused shockwave therapy (combined shockwave, n = 18). Most were runners (n = 31, 81.6%), mean age was 43.3 ± 12.9 years, and average symptom duration 12.1 ± 11.1 months. All patients were prescribed an exercise program focusing on foot intrinsic strengthening. We hypothesized both groups would have improvement in function using the foot and Ankle Ability Measure, with a similar safety profile. Both radial and combined groups received similar number of total treatments (4.9 ± 2.5 and 4.1 ± 2.4, respectively; p = .33). Within group score changes for the Activities of Daily Living and Sports subscales were observed for both the radial (16.5 ± 16.3, p < .001; 31.7 ± 23.1, p < .001) and combined groups (19.8 ± 10.8, p = .001; 26.0 ± 21.5, p = .003). There was no difference in proportion of patients meeting the minimal clinically important difference between radial and combined groups regarding the Activities of Daily Living (14 (70%) vs 14 (77.8%), p = .58) and Sports subscales (17 (85%) vs 12 (75%), p = .45). Collectively, these findings suggest that a majority of patients with chronic plantar fasciitis may achieve functional gains using either form of shockwave therapy.

Abstract
Tendinopathy is a chronic degenerative musculoskeletal disorder that is common in both athletes and the general population. Exercise and extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is among the most common treatments used to mediate tendon healing and regeneration. The review presents the current understanding of mechanisms of action of ESWT and exercise in isolation and briefly synthesises evidence of their effectiveness for various tendinopathies. The central purpose of the review is to synthesize research findings investigating the combination of ESWT and exercise for five common tendinopathies (plantar heel pain, rotator cuff, lateral elbow, Achilles, and patellar tendinopathy) and provide recommendations on clinical applicability. Collectively, the available evidence indicates that ESWT combined with exercise in the form of eccentric training, tissue-specific stretching, or heavy slow resistance training are effective for specific tendinopathies and can therefore be recommended in treatment. Whilst there are at present a limited number of studies investigating combined EWST and exercise approaches, there is evidence to suggest that the combination improves outcomes in the treatment of plantar heel pain, Achilles, lateral elbow, and rotator cuff tendinopathy. However, despite overall positive outcomes in patellar tendinopathy, the combined treatment has not been shown at present to offer additional benefit over eccentric exercise alone.

Abstract
Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) is a promising treatment for plantar fasciitis (PF), however, treatment results have varied due to inconsistencies among types of shock wave treatment and devices used. This retrospective chart review includes patients who underwent ESWT using the OrthoGold 100™ shock wave device (MTS, Konstanz, Germany) for PF between January, 2013 and September, 2018. There were 108 patients (119 heels) identified, with a mean age of 51.7 ± 16.5 (Range 21-83) years. Patients were treated weekly for 3 weeks, with 2000 impulses per session at an energy flux density between 0.10 and 0.17 mJ/mm2. Mean follow-up duration was 11.5 ± 9.7 (Range 3-51) months. Mean pre-ESWT pain visual assessment scale improved from 6.7 ± 1.7 to 2.6 ± 2.7 (p < .001). The Foot and Ankle Outcome Score subscales: pain, function of daily living, function of sports and recreational activities and quality of life domains improved from 53.7 ± 14.9 to 75.7 ± 16.7 (p < .001), from 38 ± 15.2 to 71.8 ± 23 (p < .001), from 55.8 ± 16.4 to 71.4 ± 18 (p < .001), from 42.4 ± 21.5 to 59.4 ± 20.3 (p < .001) and from 44.9 ± 16.4 to 69 ± 23.9 (p < .001), respectively. Eighty-eight (81.5%) patients were satisfied with the procedure at final follow-up. Treatment of PF with unfocused shock waves was well tolerated and led to significant pain reduction, functional improvement, and patient satisfaction.

Abstract
AIM Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is known as one of the most effective treatment methods in plantar fasciitis (PF). Low-dye taping, which is the most preferred method of banding treatments, provides an analgesic effect by correcting biomechanics. It was aimed to compare the efficacy of adjuvant low-dye kinesio-taping (KT), sham-taping, or ESWT alone in PF. METHODS In this double-blind, sham-controlled study, 45 patients with PF were randomised into Group 3 (Group 1: ESWT plus low-dye KT, n = 15; Group 2: ESWT plus Sham-taping, n = 15; and Group 3: ESWT only, n = 15) five-session ESWT were administrated. KT was performed and changed every 1-week for the ESWT sessions in Groups 1 and 2. The main outcome measures were the visual analogue scale (VAS) change, the heel tenderness index (HTI), foot function index (FFI). The patients were evaluated at the beginning and end of the treatment and at the 4-week follow-up. RESULTS The demographic characteristics and baseline outcomes between groups were similar (P > .05). No significant difference was found between Groups 1 and 2, Groups 1 and 3 and Groups 2 and 3 with respect to VAS, HTI changes during the 4-week follow-up. VAS and HTI changes were observed in all three groups, there were no differences between groups. Repeated-measures ANOVA showed a significant interaction between the time and the groups in FFI-total (F3.919 = 2.607; P = .043). For the FFI total, there was only a significant difference in favour of Group 1 when compared with Group 2 (P = .027). CONCLUSIONS Although low-dye KT in addition to ESWT was more effective on foot function improvement than additive sham-taping and ESWT alone, it did not provide a significant benefit on pain and heel tenderness because of PF. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER The study was registered at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (ClinicalTrials.gov) (NCT03904966).

Abstract
The aetiology of plantar fasciitis (PF) remains uncertain and to date, it is not known if there is an association with spring ligament laxity. In this study, 28 patients with unilateral plantar fasciitis were evaluated. A digital Klaumeter was used to assess first ray for instability and lateral plane translation was used as a measure of spring ligament laxity in the affected vs unaffected foot (internal control). Retromalleolar tenderness as a sign of a reactive tibialis posterior tendon was also assessed. The mean lateral translation score for symptomatic feet was 67.2 (95% CI [63.26-71.14]), compared to asymptomatic feet mean of 33.0 (95% CI [27.35-38.65] p < 0.05). The mean TMT instability score for symptomatic feet was 11.3 (95% CI [10.29-12.3]), compared to the asymptomatic feet mean of 5.9 (95% CI [4.49-7.31] p < 0.05). 100% of symptomatic feet had a retromalleolar tenderness over the tibialis posterior compared to 14% of asymptomatic feet. This is the first study to demonstrate a statistically significant increase in spring ligament strain in feet affected with PF using internal controls. The study postulates that tensile overload at the medial plantar fascia develops secondary to spring ligament failure regardless of foot shape. Furthermore, this condition can be regarded as an early warning sign of adult acquired flat foot disorder (AAFD). Future treatments for PF should not further destabilise the medial arch. This understanding may allow development of new treatment strategies in restoring spring ligament integrity to offload the plantar fascia strain.

Abstract
PURPOSE To estimate the long-term effect of low-dose radiotherapy of painful plantar calcaneal spurs, and to verify possible prognostic factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS In this retrospective unicenter study, electronic patient files of patients with painful plantar calcaneal spurs treated with low-dose radiotherapy between July 2009 and February 2020 were reviewed. The low-dose radiotherapy consisted of a total dose of 3.0 Gy given with a fraction dose of 0.5 Gy three times a week. The pain reduction was estimated using a patient questionnaire with a visual analogue scale. Kaplan-Meier statistics and Cox regression analysis were used for the statistical analysis. RESULTS Altogether, 864 heels of 666 patients were reviewed. The probability of an insufficient pain control 10 years after low-dose radiotherapy was 45.9% (95% confidence interval 39.4-52.4%) in the subset of patients with a minimum follow-up of 3 months (582 heels of 467 patients). Patients with an unsatisfactory pain reduction 3 months after low-dose radiotherapy were offered a re-irradiation. Forty percent of the patients who received a re-irradiation developed good pain reduction. Occurrence of an initial aggravation of pain during or within 3 months after low-dose radiotherapy (p = 0.005), and treatment of bilateral painful plantar calcaneal spurs (p = 0.008) were identified as significant unfavorable prognostic factors on univariate analysis. On multivariate analysis, the initial aggravation of pain remained as independent significant prognostic factor (p = 0.01). No clear radiation toxicity was observed. CONCLUSIONS Low-dose radiotherapy is a safe and effective treatment option for patients with painful plantar calcaneal spurs. An initial aggravation of pain during or within 3 months after radiotherapy was identified as unfavorable prognostic factor for the treatment outcome. Re-irradiation of patients with an unsatisfactory pain reduction after low-dose radiotherapy is effective and should be offered to patients.

Abstract
Acupuncture and dry needling are both minimally invasive procedures that use thin, filiform needles without injectate for the management of a variety of neuromusculoskeletal pain conditions. While the theoretical constructs underlying the use of acupuncture and dry needling are unique, both appear to have the ability to elicit biochemical, biomechanical, endocrinological and neurovascular changes associated with reductions in pain and disability. However, optimal treatment dosage has yet to be determined, and there is a lack of consistency in the literature on the number of needles that should be inserted and the needle retention time. Therefore, the purpose of this narrative review is to further explore the importance of these two variables. While trigger point dry needling advocates single needle insertions via repetitive, quick in-and-out pistoning, most acupuncture and dry needling clinical trials have incorporated multiple needles for five to 40 min. Notably and to date, using a single needle to repeatedly prick trigger points one at a time with fast-in and fast-out pistoning maneuvers has not yet been shown to produce significant and clinically meaningful long term improvements in pain and disability in a wide array of musculoskeletal conditions. Insertion of multiple needles for typically 20-30 min durations has been shown to produce larger treatment effect sizes and longer-lasting outcomes than brief, single-needle strategies. Moreover, the number of needles and needle retention time are two variables associated with treatment dosage and must be carefully matched with specific musculoskeletal conditions and the patient's goals.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Plantar fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain. The aetiology of this condition remains unclear. Patients typically have pain upon palpation of the medial plantar calcaneal region. Extracorporeal shockwave therapy has shown favourable outcomes in various studies. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy with radial pressure wave therapy. PATIENTS AND METHODS Seventy-nine non-randomised patients diagnosed with plantar fasciitis were included between January 2017 and June 2018. Patients from the Arnau de Vilanova Hospital in Valencia were treated with focused extracorporeal shockwave therapy, and patients from Llíria Hospital with radial pressure wave therapy. Measured outcome variables were: visual analog scale; ultrasonographic measurement of plantar fascia thickness; self-reported foot-specific pain and disability using the Foot Function Index; self-reported health-related quality of life using the Euroqol-5D; self-reported pain and limitations of activity using the Roles & Maudsley Scale. RESULTS At inclusion, the 2groups showed no significant differences in demographic or clinical characteristics. Three months after treatment completion, both groups showed improvement in all outcome variables, without statistically significant differences between the 2groups. No adverse effects or complications were observed. CONCLUSIONS Both extracorporeal shockwave therapy and radial pressure wave therapy are effective treatments for plantar fasciitis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to determine whether the injection of botulinum toxin A (BTA) in the medial head of the gastrocnemius muscle could yield improvements in function and disability in patients with chronic plantar fasciitis with follow-up 12 months after treatment. METHODS Thirty-two patients with chronic plantar fasciitis were included in the study and randomly allocated to the BTA and placebo groups. The visual analog scale (VAS) and American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) scores were used to evaluate pain levels pre- and postinjection as well as function of the foot, respectively. Patients were also asked to rate their treatment satisfaction 1 year after injection. The range of dorsiflexion was measured before and 12 months after the injection. RESULTS At the 12-month follow-up, the mean VAS decreased from 7.8 to 4 in the placebo group and from 8 to 0.33 in the BTA group. Furthermore, the mean AOFAS scores increased from 48.4 to 65.3 in the placebo group and from 45.5 to 90.6 in the BTA group. The postinjection scores in the BTA group were significantly higher than those in the placebo group (P < .001). Patient satisfaction in the BTA group was higher than that in the placebo group at the 12-month follow-up. CONCLUSION In patients with chronic plantar fasciitis, the use of BTA had a positive effect on improvement in pain and foot function 1 year after treatment. Abstract
BACKGROUND Shock-wave therapy (SWT) has been widely applied and proven to be an effective treatment in ameliorating symptoms of plantar fasciitis (PF). Ultrasound therapy (UT) is another common treatment of PF, and several researches have documented its advantages when compared to corticosteroid injection. Despite this, few studies have focused on comparing the use of SWT and UT in the treatment of PF. The purpose of our meta-analysis is to evaluate whether SWT is better than UT in managing PF, both in terms of ameliorating pain and improving functionality. METHODS A systematic search of the literature was conducted to identify relevant articles that were published in Pubmed, Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Library, SpringerLink, Clinical Trials.gov and OVID from the databases' inception to October 2018. All studies comparing the efficacy of SWT and UT in terms of pain levels and functionality improvement were included. Data on the two primary outcomes were collected and analyzed using the Review Manager 5.3. RESULTS Five studies were included in the current meta-analysis. A significant difference in VAS score (MD = - 13.14, Cl - 14.07 to - 12.75 P < 0.00001, I2 = 100%) was noted between the SWT group and the UT group. No significant difference was seen in the AOFAS (MD = 3.19, Cl - 1.72 to 8.10 P = 0.20, I2 = 100%); FFI or PFPS score was not found significant difference either (SMD = - 1.17, Cl - 4.45 to 2.10 P = 0.48, I2 = 96%). CONCLUSIONS The results from this meta-analysis highlight the effectiveness of both SWT and UT in the treatment of PF. Although inter-group differences were not significant, the VAS score was better improved in the SWT group, suggesting that SWT may be a superior alternative for the treatment of PF.
