Abstract
1H-Pyrrole-2,3-diones, fused at [e]-side with a heterocycle, are suitable platforms for the synthesis of various angular polycyclic alkaloid-like spiroheterocycles. Recently discovered sulfur-containing [e]-fused 1H-pyrrole-2,3-diones (aroylpyrrolobenzothiazinetriones) tend to exhibit unusual reactivity. Based on these peculiar representatives of [e]-fused 1H-pyrrole-2,3-diones, we have developed an approach to an unprecedented 6/5/5/5-tetracyclic alkaloid-like spiroheterocyclic system of benzo[d]pyrrolo[3',4':2,3]pyrrolo[2,1-b]thiazole via their reaction with Schiff bases and carbodiimides. The experimental results have been supplemented with DFT computational studies. The synthesized alkaloid-like 6/5/5/5-tetracyclic compounds have been tested for their biotechnological potential as growth stimulants in the green algae Chlorella vulgaris.

Abstract
Ten different processes (Methods A-J) were tested to prepare tertiary amines bearing bulky alkyl groups. In particular, SN1 alkylation of secondary amines with the help of 1-adamantyl triflate (Method D) and reaction of N-chlorodialkylamines with organometallic reagents (Method H), but also attack of the latter reagents at iminium salts, which were generated in situ by N-alkylation of imines (Method J), led to trialkylamines with unprecedented steric congestion. These products showed a restriction of the rotation about the C-N bond. Consequently, equilibration of rotamers was slow on the NMR time scale resulting in distinguishable sets of NMR data at room temperature. Furthermore, tertiary amines with bulky alkyl substituents underwent Hofmann-like elimination when heating in toluene to form an olefin and a secondary amine. Since the tendency to take part in this decay reaction correlated with the degree of steric hindrance around the nitrogen atom, Hofmann elimination at ambient temperature, which made the isolation of the tertiary amine difficult, was observed in special cases.

Abstract
The results are presented of a theoretical study of the nitrosation chemistry of pyrroline 1 (X = CH2), imidazoline 2 (X = NH), and 2-oxazoline 3 (X = O). Imines 1-3 are converted to the alpha-hydroxy-N-nitrosamines 7-9 via the N-nitrosoiminium ions 4-6. The NN-cis isomers of 7-9 may undergo retro-ene reactions to the delta-oxoalkyl diazotic acids 10-12. With the opportunity for microsolvation, C-X cleavage becomes possible for 8 and 9 and leads to the formation of N-(2-aminoethyl)- and N-(2-hydroxyethyl)-N-nitrosoformamides 15 and 16, respectively. The NN-isomerization barriers are comparable to the barriers for the ring-opening reactions, and the consideration of two Curtin-Hammett scenarios is required: CH-I for the NN-trans-rotamers of 7-9 to undergo C-X cleavage or NN-isomerization and CH-II for the NN-cis-rotamers to undergo C-X cleavage, C-N cleavage, or NN-isomerization. We determined all stereoisomers of the substrates, the products, and of all transition states structures for the retro-ene reactions of 7-9, the C-X cleavages of microsolvated 8 and 9, and the NN-isomerizations of 8 and 9. The potential energy surfaces were explored at the B3LYP/6-31G level, and the results are discussed with emphasis on the comparison of the kinetics and thermodynamics of C-N versus C-X cleavage. The study shows all decompositions to be very fast with activation barriers below 21 kcal.mol(-1), and the comparative analysis predicts that the chemical toxicologies of 1 and 3 should be similar and remarkably different from that of 2.
