Vellus hair condition is related to dermal elasticity and facial sagging severity

BACKGROUND

Sagging of facial skin is a critical factor associated with an aged appearance. However, the mechanism of sagging has not been fully elucidated. The facial skin contains vellus hair (fine hair), but the contribution of vellus hair to skin condition and facial aging has yet to be studied.

AIM

We aimed to clarify the influence of vellus hair on the physical properties and sagging severity of facial skin by establishing an evaluation system for vellus hair condition.

METHOD

Photographs were taken to assess the vellus hair condition in the cheek area in 30 middle-aged female volunteers. Skin elasticity was measured with a cutometer and sagging severity was evaluated by using previously established photograph-based grading criteria.

RESULTS

Facial skin vellus hairs were divided into three types: fine, thick, and normal thickness. Based on this observation, we established a 6-grade photograph-based grading system based on the dominant type of vellus hair in the target area and used it to evaluate vellus hair condition at the cheek. We found that vellus hair condition is significantly positively related to skin elasticity parameters Ua/Uf (representing overall elasticity including creep and creep recovery), Ur/Ue (representing net elasticity without viscoelastic creep), and Ur/Uf (ratio of elastic recovery to total deformation). Further, vellus hair condition was significantly negatively correlated to sagging severity.

CONCLUSION

Our results suggest that vellus hair condition positively contributes to the skin's physical properties, and consequently deterioration of the vellus hair condition promotes an aged facial appearance.

Morpho-functional Analysis of the Head Glands in Three Auchenorrhyncha Species and Their Possible Biological Significance

The Cicadomorpha Philaenus spumarius, Neophilaenus campestris, and Cicadella viridis are known transmitters of the bacterium Xylella fastidiosa. Here, we studied the ultrastructural organization of their cephalic glands. Our investigations with scanning, transmission, focused ion beam-scanning electron microscopes and light microscope revealed for the first time in Auchenorrhyncha the presence of two types of cephalic glands. Both belonged to the Class III epidermal glands, according to the Noirot and Quennedey classification. Type A glands were the most common, being mainly located around antennae, lorum, and gena. Moreover, these glands were observed also on the abdomen and thorax, always in association with sensilla trichoidea. The second type of glands (type B) were located exclusively at the apical part of the postclypeus in P. spumarius and N. campestris. The ultrastructural organization was similar in both types, being composed of a secretory cell and a conducting canal. Differences were observed in the width of the cuticular opening, being smaller in the type II glands. In addition, we have recorded the presence of a maxillary sensory pit in all species and described sensilla trichoidea ultrastructural organization. Finally, we discussed the ultrastructural organization of the glands and their potential biological role.

A new species of the genus Dryinus Latreille (Hymenoptera, Dryinidae) from the USA

A new species of Dryinus Latreille, 1804, is described from Georgia (USA). D. georgianus sp. nov. is morphologically similar to D. mexicanus (Perkins, 1907) and D. splendidus Guglielmino and Olmi, 2013, but is distinguished by the lateral ocelli not touching the occipital carina (in the other two species, the lateral ocelli touch the occipital carina). The key to the females of the Nearctic species of Dryinus group 1 is modified to include the new taxon.

Transmission and scanning electron microscopic observations on antennal apical pegs in the wasp species Pimplinae (Insecta: Hymenoptera)

Pimplinae are parasitoids belonging to the family Ichneumonidae that attack and develops inside hidden host; female wasps evolved a peculiar host recognition strategy, that involves the use of self-produced vibrations which are transmitted through the antennae on the substrate and perceived back as an echo using the leg subgenual organ. In this study we investigated, using both scanning and transmission electron microscopy, the antennal tips of a few Pimplinae. In all the investigated species, the antennal tips present peculiar apical pegs with different shape and number, often defining a flattened sole devoid of other antennal structures, such as sensilla. These pegs are present in both sexes with different number and development, are inserted on the antennal wall through an inflexible socket and present a cuticular shaft with cuticle of different thickness. We never found the presence of sensory neurons or glandular epithelium associated with these pegs. Because of their peculiar morphological features, we hypothesize for the antennal apical pegs a role in the context of host searching behavior (in the case of the female through the vibrational sounding strategy), as well as during mating behavior.
