Abstract
Cigarette smoke contains a large number of chemicals, including both flavor components and harmful substances. The mainstream smoke (MSS) generated by smoking is directly inhaled by individuals, making it crucial to establish an effective method for smoke detection and analysis. One promising technique for analyzing smoke is MPT-MS (Microwave plasma torch mass spectrometry). This approach offers several advantages in accurately detecting the composition of cigarette smoke. By combining MPT-MS with a smoke pumping device, we can achieve real-time online detection of smoke components. We successfully detected 22 flavor compounds present in the smoke. These compounds contribute to the distinct taste of cigarettes. Moreover, we identified 2 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the smoke. PAHs are known carcinogens and are of great concern in terms of their potential health risks. The successful detection and identification of flavor compounds and PAHs using our method confirm the online detection capability of MPT-MS. This approach provides an efficient and reliable means for analyzing the complex composition of cigarette smoke. By utilizing MPT-MS, we can gain valuable insights into the chemical composition of cigarette smoke and can inform the development of strategies and policies aimed at reducing the harmful effects of smoking and protecting public health.

Simultaneous and on-line detection of organic and heavy metal components in water using a novel nebulization-assisted injection plasma ionization triple quadruple mass spectrometry instrument. Anal Chim Acta 2024; 1304:342531. [PMID: 38637047 DOI: 10.1016/j.aca.2024.342531] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Key Words] [Track Full Text] [Journal Information] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Received: 09/07/2023] [Revised: 03/11/2024] [Accepted: 03/25/2024] [Indexed: 04/20/2024]
Abstract
BACKGROUND The global release of organic and heavy metal components into natural water bodies is a major concern for the environment and human health. The assessment of water quality relies on analyzing organic and heavy metal components qualitatively and quantitatively. Real-time identification of organic and metal components in water systems requires different analytical techniques due to varying measurement requirements. Thus, on-line detecting both organic compounds and heavy metals in ambient water systems simultaneously using a single instrumentation setup presents a significant challenge. RESULTS In this study, an analytical technique of nebulization-assisted injection plasma ionization mass spectrometry (NI-PIMS) was developed. This novel method enables the simultaneous detection of heavy metals and organic compounds in water system with high sensitivity, which has been demonstrated by the limit of quantification (LOQ) values below 1.0 μg/L for the three sterols (Enrofloxacin, ciprofloxacin, and clenbuterol) and three heavy metals (Pb, Ba, and Cd). Moreover, the method was successfully applied to rapidly analyze real water samples from urban and rural areas in China. The analytical results are available in less than 0.5 min, and only a few microliters of sample are required for each analysis. SIGNIFICANCE AND NOVELTY As far as we know, this is the first report of on-line simultaneous analysis of organic compounds and heavy metals in a water system using a single mass spectrometry instrument. Compared to traditional methods, NI-PIMS demonstrates higher efficiency, sensitivity, no or lower sample preparation, and less sample consumption. The advancement and widespread use of this technology are expected to enhance the effectiveness of mass spectrometers, broaden the applications, and play an important role in complex sample analysis in fields such as atmospheric science, environmental science, and earth science.

Abstract
In this study, a soft microwave plasma torch (SMPT) combined with a mass spectrometer (MS) was used for the first time as an analytical method to detect and analyze various pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments without the need for sample pretreatment. For this purpose, ambient SMPT was used to generate plasma for ionizing the analyte molecules. Accordingly, nine PPCPs were identified by the SMPT-MS, and their identification was verified by collision-induced dissociation (CID). The technique's performance was verified with known PPCP samples, and the limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) obtained over a linear range of 50-1 μg/L were 1.56 to 2.81 and 2.07 to 3.62 μg/L, respectively, with the standard addition recovery rate falling between 87.14 and 115.16%. These results show that the method has excellent sensitivity and selectivity, suggesting that SMPT can rapidly and directly detect PPCPs in environmental water, making it a promising method for rapid water quality inspection.

Abstract
The misuse of pesticides poses a tremendous threat to human health. Excessive pesticide residues have been shown to cause many diseases. Many sensor detection methods have been developed, but most of them suffer from problems such as slow detection speed or narrow detection range. So, the development of rapid, direct and sensitive means of detecting trace amounts of pesticide residues is always necessary. A novel online sensor technique was developed for direct analysis of pesticides in complex matrices with no sample pretreatment. The portable sensor ion source consists of an MPT (microwave plasma torch) with desolventizing capability and an APCI (atmosphere pressure chemical ionization), which provides abundant precursor ions and a strong electric field. The performance which improves the ionization efficiency and suppresses the background signal was verified by using pesticide standard solution and pesticide pear juice solution measurements with an Orbitrap mass spectrometer. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantization (LOQ) of the method were measured by pear juice solutions that were obtained in the ranges of 0.034-0.79 μg/L and 0.14-1 μg/L. Quantitative curves were obtained ranging from 0.5 to 100 μg/L that showed excellent semi-quantitative ability with correlation coefficients of 0.985-0.997. The recoveries (%) of atrazine, imidacloprid, dimethoate, profenofos, chlorpyrifos, and dichlorvos were 96.6%, 112.7%, 88.1%, 85.5%, 89.2%, and 101.9% with the RSDs ranging from 5.89-14.87%, respectively. The results show that the method has excellent sensitivity and quantification capability for rapid and direct detection of trace pesticide.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The less volatile fraction of perfumes can be easily contaminated by phthalates esters (PAEs) which are endocrine-disrupting chemicals during the production, bottling and transportation processes. It is necessary to establish an innovative and rapid method to determine the trace PAEs in commercial perfumes. OBJECTIVE Hence, self-built spray-inlet microwave plasma torch ionization coupled with a quadrupole time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometer (QTOF-MS) was developed for direct analysis of PAEs in perfumes with no sample pretreatment. METHODS Perfumes were sprayed to the MPT's flame directly by sampling pump in 10 µL/min and the ions produced by MPT were introduced into QTOF-MS, the MPT worked at 2450 MHz and 40 W in the 800 ml/min flow rate of argon. RESULTS For the developed method, excellent linearities were obtained and the correlation coefficient of Di-n-pentyl Phthalate was 0.9799 and the rest were larger than 0.99. The LODs and LOQs were obtained in the ranges of 1.452-18.96 ng/g and 4.839-63.19 ng/g, respectively. The spiked recoveries of PAEs were in the range of 100.1-105.2% with satisfied intra-day RSDs and inter-day RSDs ranging from 1.51-4.34% and 3.45-5.65%, respectively. PAEs in commercial perfumes were successfully detected by spray-inlet MPT-MS2 with low concentrations from 0.036-1.352 µg/g. CONCLUSIONS The method is a promising tool in field analysis of PAEs in cosmetic solutions where rapid qualitative and quantitative analysis in needed. HIGHLIGHTS The method was satisfactorily applied to the analysis of commercial perfume samples within 30 s, and earned merits such as simplicity, sensitivity, environmental friendliness and ease operation.

Abstract
Phthalate esters are synthetic chemicals that are widely used in plastic industries as plasticizer. They are harmful to humans and could be carcinogenic. In this research, a new nanosorbent was prepared via a Schiff-base reaction between p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde and Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2 nanoparticles. A characterization of the sorbent was performed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive spectroscopy. A modified nanosorbent has a core shell structure, and shows a great tendency towards the sorption of phthalate esters. Hence, it was utilized for the dispersive solid-phase extraction of six phthalate esters and determination by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection. Several variables, such as the pH, sorbent amount, salt effects, extraction and desorption time, extraction solvent type and volume, were investigated to establish the optimal conditions. Calibration graphs were linear in the range of 1.0 - 150.0 μg L-1 for dimethyl phthalate, bis-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, di-n-octyl phthalate and 0.1 - 200.0 μg L-1 for diethyl phthalate, di-n-butyl phthalate and butyl benzyl phthalate, respectively. The obtained limits of detections (S/N = 3) were in the range of 0.02 - 0.31 μg L-1. Application of the method for the enrichment and determination of phthalate esters in mineral water, natural low fat yogurt and sodium chloride infusion (0.9%, w/v) was investigated.

Abstract
A new atmospheric pressure ionization method, plasmaspray ionization, termed as PSI, was developed to be an alternative ambient ion source for mass spectrometry. It comprises a plasma jet device and a sample spray part. While the nonthermal plasma jet strikes the surface of stainless steel tube out of the spray capillary, the sprayed sample will be ionized with the assistant of auxiliary gas. Although PSI is a little bit more complex than electrospray ionization (ESI) in instrument, it shows both better linearity and higher sensitivity for organic compounds. For protein samples, it presents wider distributions of multiply charged ions and higher mass resolution without sacrificing any sensitivity. For the mechanism of PSI, the charge build-up process on the tip of capillary should play a key role for the ion formation, and the stimulated pulsed voltage on the flow tube will promote the ion aggregation speed until the charge density is high enough. PSI source contains the features of plasma ionization and ESI and can be considered as a novel combo bridging these techniques. These results reflect that this method of PSI can be applied and further developed as a versatile new ion source for a wild range of organic and biological samples.

Abstract
Inert metals are of much importance and play a key role in modern industrial manufacturing. The analytical techniques of inert metals remain challenging. In particular, the mass spectrometry of inert metal elements is yet to be further developed, which also limits the contemporary conceptual in situ analysis of inert metals. As the representative element, the mass spectral detection of palladium is critical and of far-reaching significance. Herein, we developed a mass spectrometry method, which can be used for the high-speed and in situ analysis of palladium, and even for other inert metals. Combining the line ion trap mass spectrometer with the versatile ambient ionization source, a novel kilowatt microwave plasma torch (MPT) can be used to obtain the fully characteristic MPT mass spectra of palladium. Detailed multistage tandem mass spectra show that the general form of target ions is [M(O2)x(NO)mNy(NO2)n]- for the negative ion mode and [M(H2O)x(NO2)y(N2)m]+ for the positive ion mode. Moreover, the formation and evolution of these palladium complex ions were reasonably derived based on the analysis of MPT background mass spectra. This mass spectrometric technique is also suitable for the determination of the palladium-containing solution in the sub-trace level. Semi-quantitative results showed that the detecting ability for palladium in the negative mode is better than that of the positive mode. Under the negative ion mode, the limit of detection (LOD) for m/z 259 were evaluated to be 0.5 μg L-1 under the optimized conditions of the negative mode, with the linear range of 1-100 μg·L-1 (R2 ≥ 0.9985) and the relative standard deviation (RSD, n = 11) being in the range of 1.20%-5.98% (refer to Table S3). Our experimental data showed that MPT-MS was a promising technique for providing another alternative in the on-site analysis of liquid samples and other intimate relevant fields, as the supplement of ICP-MS for the detection of inert metal elements. On the other hand, this work will also certainly promote the more broad applications of platinum-group elements (PGE) in modern science and industry.

Abstract
Direct mass spectrometry has grown significantly due to wide applicability, relative ease of use, and high sample throughput. However, many current direct mass spectrometry methods are largely based on ambient ionization techniques that can suffer from matrix effects and poor selectivity. A strategy that addresses these shortcomings is condensed phase membrane introduction mass spectrometry-liquid electron ionization utilizing in situ liquid reagent chemical ionization (CP-MIMS-LEI/CI). In CP-MIMS measurements, a semipermeable hollow fiber polydimethylsiloxane membrane probe is directly immersed into a complex sample. Neutral, hydrophobic analytes permeating the membrane are entrained by a continuously flowing liquid acceptor phase (nL/min) to an LEI/CI source, where the liquid is nebulized, followed by analyte vaporization and ionization. This study marks the first intentional exploitation of the liquid CP-MIMS acceptor phase as an in situ means of providing liquid chemical ionization (CI) reagents for improved analyte sensitivity and selectivity (CP-MIMS-LEI/CI). Acetonitrile and diethyl ether were used as a combination acceptor phase/CI proton transfer reagent system for the direct analysis of dialkyl phthalates. Using isotopically labeled reagents, the gas phase ionization mechanism was found to involve reagent autoprotonation, followed by proton transfer to dialkyl phthalates. A demonstration of the applicability of CP-MIMS-LEI/CI for rapid and sensitive screening of bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in house dust samples is presented. The detection limit in house dust (6 mg/kg) is comparable to that obtained by conventional analyses, but without time-consuming sample workup or chromatographic separation steps.
