Development of a novel DGT passive sampler for measuring polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in aquatic systems

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are priority pollutants and need to be measured reliably in waters and other media, to understand their sources, fate, behaviour and to meet regulatory monitoring requirements. Conventional water sampling requires large water volumes, time-consuming pre-concentration and clean-up and is prone to analyte loss or contamination. Here, for the first time, we developed and validated a novel diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT) passive sampler for PAHs. Based on the well-known DGT principles, the sampler pre-concentrates PAHs with typical deployment times of days/weeks, with minimal sample handling. For the first time, DGT holding devices made of metal and suitable for sampling hydrophobic organic compounds were designed and tested. They minimize sorption and sampling lag times. Following tests on different binding layer resins, a MIP-DGT was preferred - the first time applying MIP for PAHs. It samples PAHs independent of pH (3.9 -8.1), ionic strength (0.01 -0.5 M) and dissolved organic matter < 20 mg L-1, making it suitable for applications across a wide range of environments. Field trials in river water and wastewater demonstrated that DGT is a convenient and reliable tool for monitoring labile PAHs, readily achieving quantitative detection of environmental levels (sub-ng and ng/L range) when coupled with conventional GC-MS or HPLC. ENVIRONMENTAL IMPLICATIONS: PAHs are carcinogenic and genotoxic compounds. They are environmentally ubiquitous and must be monitored in waters and other media. This study successfully developed a new DGT passive sampler for reliable in situ time-integrated measurements of PAHs in waters at the ng/L level. This is the first time to use passive samplers for accurate measurements of hydrophobic organic contaminants in aquatic systems without calibration, a big step forward in monitoring PAHs. The application of this new sampler will enhance our understanding of the sources, fate, behavior and ecotoxicology of PAHs, enabling improved environmental risk assessment and management of these compounds.

Effects on food intake of Gammarus spp. after exposure to PFBA in very low concentrations

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of thousands of highly persistent anthropogenic chemicals widely used in many industries. Therefore, they are, ubiquitously present in various types of environments. Despite their omnipresence, ecotoxicological studies of most PFAS are scarce, and those available often assess the effects of long chain PFAS. In this study, we present the results of an exposure experiment in which wild aquatic amphipod Gammarus spp. was exposed to the short chain perfluorinated substance perfluorobutanoic acid (PFBA) at very low and environmentally relevant concentrations of 0, 10 and 100 ng/L. The exposure lasted for 12 days, and food intake and non-reproductive behavior were analyzed. Exposure to 10 and 100 ng/L PFBA resulted in a lower consumption of food during exposure but no effect on behavior was found.

Nitrite-dependent anaerobic methane oxidation (N-DAMO) in global aquatic environments: A review

The vast majority of processes in the carbon and nitrogen cycles are driven by microorganisms. The nitrite-dependent anaerobic oxidation of methane (N-DAMO) process links carbon and nitrogen cycles, offering a novel approach for the simultaneous reduction of methane emissions and nitrite pollution. However, there is currently no comprehensive summary of the current status of the N-DAMO process in natural aquatic environments. Therefore, our study aims to fill this knowledge gap by conducting a comprehensive review of the global research trends in N-DAMO processes in various aquatic environments (excluding artificial bioreactors). Our review mainly focused on molecular identification, global study sites, and their interactions with other elemental cycling processes. Furthermore, we performed a data integration analysis to unveil the effects of key environmental factors on the abundance of N-DAMO bacteria and the rate of N-DAMO process. By combining the findings from the literature review and data integration analysis, we proposed future research perspectives on N-DAMO processes in global aquatic environments. Our overarching goal is to advance the understanding of the N-DAMO process and its role in synergistically reducing carbon emissions and removing nitrogen. By doing so, we aim to make a significant contribution to the timely achievement of China's carbon peak and carbon neutrality targets.

Human health risks assessment of the fluctuations in mercury levels in seafood from different key regions of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Mercury (Hg) contamination on the Brazilian southeast coast has been highlighted, especially in relation to species of commercial importance. This study aimed to quantify the Hg concentration in species of mussels, fish, and crabs obtained from fishing colonies on the beaches of the west and south of the city of Rio de Janeiro, investigate the possible effect of seasonality, sex, and location sampling, and finally, the risk to consumer health in four different age groups. The difference between cooked and raw commercially available mussel samples was also verified. The main results highlight that the fish presented higher levels of Hg and that the mussel samples sold cooked presented lower levels of Hg when compared to the raw ones. For Micropogonias furnieri, Sardinella brasiliensis, and Callinectes spp., the season variable influenced Hg concentrations, while only for Merluccius merluccius was a difference between the sexes identified, with males having the highest values. Although Hg concentrations in animals were below the permitted limit, consumption of all species exceeded the monthly intake limit for this metal. For the hazard quotient (HQ) calculation, most species presented HQ > 1, especially when ingested by the child population. These results are fundamental for designing consumption strategies for these animals, in order to prioritize the acquisition of some species over others, depending on the location and/or season, for each age group, with the aim of maintaining seafood consumption with minimal risk to the population's health.

Unveiling novel threats: Urban river isolation of Aeromonas veronii with unusual VEB-28 extended-spectrum β-lactamase and distinct mcr variants

Aeromonas spp. are frequently encountered in aquatic environments, with Aeromonas veronii emerging as an opportunistic pathogen causing a range of diseases in both humans and animals. Recent reports have raised public health concerns due to the emergence of multidrug-resistant Aeromonas spp. This is particularly noteworthy as these species have demonstrated the ability to acquire and transmit antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). In this study, we report the genomic and phenotypic characteristics of the A. veronii TR112 strain, which harbors a novel variant of the Vietnamese Extended-spectrum β-lactamase-encoding gene, blaVEB-28, and two mcr variants recovered from an urban river located in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, Brazil. A. veronii TR112 strain exhibited high minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for ceftazidime (64 μg/mL), polymyxin (8 μg/mL), and ciprofloxacin (64 μg/mL). Furthermore, the TR112 strain demonstrated adherence to HeLa and Caco-2 cells within 3 h, cytotoxicity to HeLa cells after 24 h of interaction, and high mortality rates to the Galleria mellonella model. Genomic analysis showed that the TR112 strain belongs to ST257 and presented a range of ARGs conferring resistance to β-lactams (blaVEB-28, blaCphA3, blaOXA-912) and polymyxins (mcr-3 and mcr-3.6). Additionally, we identified a diversity of virulence factor-encoding genes, including those encoding mannose-sensitive hemagglutinin (Msh) pilus, polar flagella, type IV pili, type II secretion system (T2SS), aerolysin (AerA), cytotoxic enterotoxin (Act), hemolysin (HlyA), hemolysin III (HlyIII), thermostable hemolysin (TH), and capsular polysaccharide (CPS). In conclusion, our findings suggest that A. veronii may serve as an environmental reservoir for ARGs and virulence factors, highlighting its importance as a potential pathogen in public health.

A critical review of distribution, toxicological effects, current analytical methods and future prospects of synthetic musks in aquatic environments

Synthetic musks (SMs) have gained widespread utilization in daily consumer products, leading to their widespread dissemination in aquatic environments through various pathways. Over the past few decades, the production of SMs has consistently risen, prompting significant concern over their potential adverse impacts on ecosystems and human health. Although several studies have focused on the development of analytical techniques for detecting SMs in biological samples and cosmetic products, a comprehensive evaluation of their global distribution in diverse aquatic media and biological matrices remains lacking. This review aims to provide an up-to-date overview of the occurrence of SMs in both aquatic and various biological matrices, investigating their worldwide distribution trends, assessing their ecological toxicity, and comparing different methodologies for processing and analysis of SMs. The findings underscore the prevalence of polycyclic musks as predominant SMs, with consumption of various products in different countries leading to contrasting distribution of contaminants. Furthermore, the migration of SMs from sediments to the water phase is investigated, indicating the role of solid-phase reservoirs. Incomplete degradation of SMs in the environment could contribute to their accumulation in aquatic systems, impacting the growth and oxidative stress of aquatic organisms, and having a possibility of genotoxicity to them. Human exposure data highlight substantial risks for vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and infants. Moreover, contemporary methods for SMs analysis are presented in this review, particularly focusing on advancements made in the last five years. Finally, research enhancement and critical questions regarding the analysis of SMs are provided, offering suggestions for future research endeavors.

Pharmaceuticals in the Aquatic Environment: No Answers Yet to the Major Questions

The presence of pharmaceuticals in the environment, especially the aquatic environment, has received a lot of attention in the last 20 plus years. Despite that attention, the two most important questions regarding pharmaceuticals in the environment still cannot be answered. It is not possible to put the threat posed by pharmaceuticals into perspective with the many other threats (stressors) facing aquatic organisms, such as low flows due to over-abstraction of water, inhibited passage of migratory species due to dams and weirs, diseases, algal blooms causing low oxygen levels and releasing toxins, eutrophication, climate change, and so on. Nor is it possible to identify which pharmaceuticals are of concern and which are not. Not only can these key questions not be answered presently, they have received extremely little attention, despite being identified 10 years ago as the two most important questions to answer. Visualization and characterisation of microplastics in aquatic environment using a home-built micro-Raman spectroscopic set up

Microplastics (MP) which are tiny plastic particles of sizes range from 1 μm (μm) to 5 mm (mm), have become a growing cause of concern due to their widespread presence in the environment and their potential impacts on ecosystems and human health. Marine organisms have the potential to consume microplastics, which could lead to physical injuries, blockages, or the transfer of harmful substances up the food chain. Humans may indirectly consume microplastics through contaminated seafood and water, although the complete scope of health risks is currently under investigation. An essential step in gaining a comprehensive understanding of microplastic pollution in waterbodies is the identification of microplastics, which is also crucial for further development of effective environmental regulations to address its adverse impacts. Majority of the researchers are accomplishing it globally using commercial platforms based on Raman spectroscopy. However, the development of indigenous Raman systems, which can enable microplastic identification, particularly in developing nations, is the need of the hour due to the outrageous cost of commercial platforms. In the current study, a custom-designed micro-Raman spectroscopy system was developed to detect and characterize microplastics from waterbodies. The developed system enabled visualization, size measurement and characterization of microplastics. Experimental parameters were fine-tuned, and a standardized Raman database was established for each type of plastic. This system exhibited high resolution which was capable of analysing microparticles of size up to 5 μm. Principal component analysis was carried out on the experimental Raman data, demonstrating good classification amongst different kinds of plastics. The performance of the developed system in analysing real samples was evaluated through experiments conducted on water samples obtained from the shore of Malpe Beach in Udupi district. The results revealed the presence of polyethylene and polyethylene terephthalate in the samples, along with the detection of pigments like copper phthalocyanine and indigo blue.

Derivation of aquatic predicted no-effect concentration and ecological risk assessment for triphenyl phosphate and tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate

Triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) and tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl) phosphate (TDCIPP) are common organophosphate esters (OPEs), which are used as additives in various industries. These compounds have been widely detected in aquatic environment, raising concerns about their adverse effects on aquatic organisms. In order to protect aquatic ecosystems, a total of 7 species were selected for acute and chronic toxicity tests in this study. The results indicated that TPhP and TDCIPP exhibited varying degrees of toxicity to aquatic organisms. The 96-h LC50 values ranged from 1.088 mg/L to 1.574 mg/L for TPhP and from 2.027 mg/L to 17.855 mg/L for TDCIPP. The 28-d LC10 values ranged from 0.023 mg/L to 0.177 mg/L for TPhP and from 0.300 mg/L to 1.102 mg/L for TDCIPP. The tested toxicity data, combined with collected toxicity data, were used to investigate the predicted no-effect concentration in water (PNECwater) of TPhP and TDCIPP by species sensitivity distribution (SSD) method. The results revealed PNECwater values of 6.35 and 38.0 μg/L for TPhP and TDCIPP, respectively. Furthermore, the predicted no-effect concentrations in sediment (PNECsed) were derived as 110 μg/kg dry weight (dw) for TPhP and 424 μg/kg dw for TDCIPP using the equilibrium partitioning (EqP) approach. Based on the toxicity data and PNECs, the ecological risk of these two chemicals in surface waters and sediments worldwide over the last decade were evaluated. The results indicated that TDCIPP posed negligible risk in aquatic ecosystems. However, TPhP showed potential risk in sediments, as indicated by the hazard quotients (HQs) exceeding 0.1. The results of joint probability curves (JPC) indicated that the probabilities of exceeding hazardous concentration for 1 % of species for TPhP in water and sediment were 0.33 % and 5.2 %, respectively. Overall, these findings highlight the need for continued monitoring and assessment of the presence and potential impacts of TPhP and TDCIPP in aquatic ecosystems.

Are Chinese mitten crabs (Eriocheir sinensis) suitable as biomonitor or bioindicator of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pollution?

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are ubiquitous in the environment. In Flanders, the bioaccumulation in aquatic organisms is currently being monitored using European perch and European eel. Since both are native species, there is an ethical need to search for other suitable biomonitors. This study aims to investigate whether the invasive Chinese mitten crab could be used in biomonitoring programs by assessing PFAS accumulation in hepatopancreas, muscle tissue, and carapace. Furthermore, we correlated accumulated concentrations to those in the local abiotic environment. Concentrations in the crabs (highest average ∑PFAS concentration of 688 ± 505 ng/g ww) were often higher than those in crab species from other regions across the globe, confirming that Flanders is highly polluted with PFAS. Concentrations in the crabs did not reflect those in the abiotic environment. This implies that biomonitoring is necessary to investigate the impact of PFAS pollution on organisms in aquatic ecosystems, as important data is missing when only the abiotic environment is monitored. The accumulation profiles differed between the invasive crab and the native European perch and European eel, potentially due to a different ecology and trophic position. Since all three species provide complementary information on the PFAS pollution, a multi-species approach in biomonitoring is recommended. Overall, our results show that the crabs can be used as biomonitor, but more information is necessary to confirm their suitability as bioindicator.

Adaptive shifts in plant traits associated with nitrogen removal driven by phytoremediation strategies in subtropical river restoration

Phytoremediation, which is commonly carried out through hydroponics and substrate-based strategies, is essential for the effectiveness of nature-based engineered solutions aimed at addressing excess nitrogen in aquatic ecosystems. However, the performance and mechanisms of plants involving nitrogen removal between different strategies need to be deeply understood. Here, this study employed in-situ cultivation coupled with static nitrogen tracing experiments to elucidate the influence of both strategies on plant traits associated with nitrogen removal. The results indicated that removal efficiencies in plants with substrate-based strategies for ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen were 30.51-71.11 % and 16.82-99.95 %, respectively, which were significantly higher than those with hydroponics strategies (25.98-58.18 % and 7.29-79.19 %, respectively). Similarly, the plant nitrogen uptake rates in the substrate-based strategy also generally showed higher levels compared to hydroponics strategies (P < 0.05). Meanwhile, the microorganisms-mediated nitrous oxide emission rates in the substrate-based strategy during summer (unamended: 0.00-0.58 μg/g/d; potential: 3.35-7.65 μg/g/d) were obviously lower than those in the hydroponics strategy (unamended: 2.23-11.70 μg/g/d; potential: 9.72-43.09 μg/g/d) (P < 0.05). Notably, analysis of similarity tests indicated that the influences of strategy on the above parameters generally surpass the effects attributable to interspecies plant differences, particularly during summer (R > 0, P < 0.05). Based on statistical and metagenomic analyses, this study revealed that these differences were driven by the stabilizing influence of substrate-based strategy on plant roots and enhancing synergistic interplay among biochemical factors within plant-root systems. Even so, phytoremediation strategies did not significantly alter the characteristics of plants with regards to their tendency towards ammonium nitrogen uptake (up to 87.68 %) and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium as primary biological pathway for nitrogen transformation which accounted for 53.66-96.47 % nitrate removal. In summary, this study suggested that the substrate-based strategy should be a more effective strategy for enhancing the nitrogen removal ability of plants in subtropical river restoration practices.

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) in water and edible fish species of Karun River, Ahvaz, Iran: spatial distribution, human health, and ecological risk assessment

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) such as perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) are environmental contaminants with unfavorable impacts on human health and nature. This study aimed to determine the PFOA and PFOS concentration in water and fish samples from Karun, the largest river in Iran. According to the results, the PFOA and PFOS in water samples were 5.81-69.26 ng/L and not detected (n.d.)-35.12 ng/L, respectively. The dry season displayed higher concentrations in water samples than in the wet season. The maximum PFOS concentration measured was related to Barbus barbules sp. (27.89 ng/g). The human health risk assessment indicated minor risks (hazard ratio, HR < 1) from PFOA and PFOS through consuming contaminated drinking water and fish. Only HR value of PFOS in downstream area exceeded slightly 1.0, indicating potential health risk due to consumption of the river fish. Considering the average PFASs concentration, the risk quotients (RQs) showed low ecological risk.

Effects of biochar on the manganese enrichment and oxidation by a microalga Scenedesmus quadricauda in the aquatic environment

Microalgae play a significant impact in the biogeochemical cycle of Mn(II) in the aquatic ecosystem. Meanwhile, the inflow of biochar into the water bodies is bound to impact the aquatic organisms. However, the influence of biochar on the manganese transformation in algae-rich water has not drawn much attention. Thus, we studied the effects of rice straw biochar on manganese enrichment and oxidation by a common type of algae in freshwater (Scenedesmus quadricauda). The results showed that Mn(II) was absorbed intracellularly and adsorbed extracellularly by active algal cells. A significant portion of enriched Mn(II) was oxidized to amorphous precipitates MnO2, MnOOH, and Mn2O3. Moreover, the extracellular bound Mn(II) content in the coexistent system of algae and biochar increased compared with the pure Scenedesmus quadricauda system. Nevertheless, the intracellular Mn content was continually lowered as the biochar dose rose from an initial 0.2 to 2.0 g·L-1, suggesting that Mn assimilation of the cell was suppressed. It was calculated that the total enrichment ability of Scenedesmus quadricauda in the algae-biochar coexistent system was 0.31- 15.32 mg Mn/g biomass, more than that in the pure algae system. More importantly, with biochar in the algae system, the amount of generated MnOx increased, and more Mn(II) was oxidized into highly-charged Mn(IV). This was probably because the biochar could relieve the stress of massive Mn(II) on algae and support the MnOx precipitates. In brief, moderate biochar promoted the Mn(II) accumulation by algal cells and its oxidation activity. This study offers deeper insight into the bioconversion of Mn(II) by algae and the potential impact of biochar application to the aquatic system.

Environmental remediation of the norfloxacin in water by adsorption: Advances, current status and prospects

Antibiotics are considered as the new generation water pollutants as these disturb endocrine systems if water contaminated with antibiotics is consumed. Among many antibiotics norfloxacin is present in various natural water bodies globally. This antibiotic is considered an emerging pollutant due to its low degradation in aquatic animals. Besides, it has many side effects on human vital organs. Therefore, the present article discusses the recent advances in the removal of norfloxacin by adsorption. This article describes the presence of norfloxacin in natural water, consumption, toxicity, various adsorbents for norfloxacin removal, optimization factors for norfloxacin removal, kinetics, thermodynamics, modeling, adsorption mechanism and regeneration of the adsorbents. Adsorption takes place in a monolayer following the Langmuir model. The Pseudo-second order model represents the kinetic data. The adsorption capacity ranged from 0.924 to 1282 mg g-1. In this sense, the parameters such as the NFX concentration added to the adsorbent textural properties exerted a great influence. Besides, the fixed bed-based removal at a large scale is also included. In addition to this, the simulation studies were also discussed to describe the adsorption mechanism. Finally, the research challenges and future perspectives have also been highlighted. This article will be highly useful for academicians, researchers, industry persons, and government authorities for designing future advanced experiments.

Microplastics in Ecuador: A review of environmental and health-risk assessment challenges

Pollution from plastic debris and microplastics (MPs) is a worldwide issue. Classified as emerging contaminants, MPs have become widespread and have been found not only in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems but also within the food chain, which affects both the environment and human health. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the consumption of single-use plastics has drastically increased, intensifying mismanaged plastic waste in countries such as Ecuador. Therefore, the aim of this review is to 1) summarize the state of MP-related knowledge, focusing on studies conducted with environmental matrices, biota, and food, and 2) analyze the efforts by different national authorities and entities in Ecuador to control MP contamination. Results showed a limited number of studies have been done in Ecuador, which have mainly focused on the surface water of coastal areas, followed by studies on sediment and food. MPs were identified in all samples, indicating the lack of wastewater management policies, deficient management of solid wastes, and the contribution of anthropogenic activities such as artisanal fishing and aquaculture to water ecosystem pollution, which affects food webs. Moreover, studies have shown that food contamination can occur through atmospheric deposition of MPs; however, ingredients and inputs from food production, processing, and packaging, as well as food containers, contribute to MP occurrence in food. Further research is needed to develop more sensitive, precise, and reliable detection methods and assess MPs' impact on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, biota, and human health. In Ecuador specifically, implementing wastewater treatment plants in major cities, continuously monitoring MP coastal contamination, and establishing environmental and food safety regulations are crucial. Additionally, national authorities need to develop programs to raise public awareness of plastic use and its environmental effects, as well as MP exposure's effects on human health.

Chronic toxicity and liver histopathology of mosquito fish (Gambusia holbrooki) exposed to natural and modified nanoclays

Nanoclays are found in the air, water, and soil, and modified nanoclays are being developed and used in several consumer products. For example, modified nanoclays are used to remove pollutants from wastewater. Ironically, however, nanoclays are now considered emerging contaminants. Indeed, release of modified nanoclays in aquatic systems, even as remediating agents, could adversely affect associated wildlife. However, aquatic organisms have interacted with natural nanoclays for millennia, and it is unclear if modified nanoclays induce stronger effects than the nanoclays that occur naturally. The concentrations over which nanoclays occur and illicit negative effects are not well studied. This study investigated the dose response of a natural nanoclay (Na+montmorillonite) relative to two modified nanoclays (Cloisite®30B and Novaclay™) on survival, body condition, and liver pathomorphology of Gambusia holbrooki after 14 days of exposure. Although none of the nanoclays affected survival and body condition of G. holbrooki over 14 days, each nanoclay induced histopathological changes in liver tissues at very low concentrations (LOAEL: 0.01 mgL-1). The effects of nanoclays on hepatic cell circulatory (blood cell aggregation with increased number of Kupffer cells and hemosiderin deposits), regressive (hepatocyte vacuolization), and degenerative (cell death) changes of mosquito fish varied among nanoclay types. Novaclay™ at low concentrations caused circulatory changes on hepatic tissues of G. holbrooki, whereas both natural nanoclays and Cloisite®30B showed little effect on circulatory endpoints. In contrast, all of the nanoclays induced regressive and degenerative changes on liver tissues of mosquito fish across all concentrations tested. This study clearly reveals that natural and modified nanoclays have important health implications for fish and other aquatic organisms. Consequently, the widespread use of modified nanoclays in several applications and increased release of natural nanoclays through erosion or other processes needs to be evaluated in more detail especially in the context of their safety for aquatic systems.

Using compound-specific isotope analysis to identify the mechanism of acetochlor degradation during oxygenation of hyporheic zone sediment

Biodegradation is recognized as the main pathway for acetochlor attenuation in aquatic environments. However, the potential abiotic degradation of acetochlor by hydroxyl radicals (•OH) generated during oxygenation of hyporheic zone sediments has not been investigated. This study aims to examine the production of •OH during oxygenation of hyporheic zone sediments and its effects on acetochlor attenuation. A significant decrease of acetochlor, ranging from 77.9% to 100%, was observed in the water-sediment systems with extensive •OH production. The primary sources of •OH production were found to be the oxidation of Fe(II) and reduced humic acids. Furthermore, a •OH quenching experiment suggests that •OH driven oxidation is the dominant pathway for acetochlor attenuation. Carbon isotope fractionation of acetochlor degradation during oxygenation of sediments (εbulk,C ranged from -1.5‰ to -0.5 ± 0.3‰) was close to that during acetochlor degradation by •OH in a H2O2-Fe3O4 Fenton system (εbulk,C = -0.5 ± 0.1‰), but significantly smaller than that during acetochlor biodegradation (εbulk,C = -5.8 ± 0.9‰). Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) further suggests that •OH produced by sediment oxygenation plays a critical role in acetochlor attenuation in aquatic environments. Results of calculated apparent kinetic isotope effect of carbon (AKIEC) and transformation products indicate that SN1 and SN2-type nucleophilic substitution are the first steps in acetochlor attenuation through •OH driven oxidation (AKIEC = 1.007 ± 0.001) and aerobic biodegradation (AKIEC = 1.088 ± 0.013), respectively. Our findings highlight the potential of CSIA to assess the acetochlor degradation in water-sediment system, which can help to elucidate the fate of herbicide in aquatic environments.

Bioactive substances of cyanobacteria and microalgae: Sources, metabolism, and anticancer mechanism insights

Cyanobacteria and microalgae contain various phytochemicals, including bioactive components in the form of secondary metabolites, namely flavonoids, phenolic acids, terpenoids, and tannins, with remarkable anticancer effects. This review highlights the recent advances in bioactive compounds, with potential anticancer activity, produced by cyanobacteria and microalgae. Previous in vitro investigations showed that many of these bioactive compounds exhibit potent effects against different human cancer types, such as leukemia and breast cancers. Multiple mechanisms implicated in the antitumor effect of these compounds were elucidated, including their ability to target cellular, subcellular, and molecular checkpoints linked to cancer development and promotion. Recent findings have highlighted various mechanisms of action of bioactive compounds produced by cyanobacteria and microalgae, including induction of autophagy and apoptosis, inhibition of telomerase and protein kinases, as well as modulation of epigenetic modifications. In vivo investigations have demonstrated a potent anti-angiogenesis effect on solid tumors, as well as a reduction in tumor volume. Some of these compounds were examined in clinical investigations for certain types of cancers, making them potent candidates/scaffolds for antitumor drug development.

Exogenous mobile genetic elements and their associated integrons drive the enrichment of antibiotic-resistant genes in the river of a valley basin city (Lanzhou, China)

River is a unique source of drinking water in valley-type cities, affecting local urban development and human lifestyles. However, the key driving factors for dissemination of antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs) in valley-type urban environments remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of ARGs in the Yellow River and to clarify the driving factors of ARGs in a typical valley basin city (Lanzhou, China). The seven selected ARGs with higher abundances including tetracycline resistance genes (tetM, tetX), macrolide resistance genes (ermB, ermF, ereA), and sulfonamide resistance genes (sul1, sul2) were detected. The results showed that the total absolute abundance of all the selected ARGs varied from 9.97 × 1012 to 1.04 × 1015 copies/L in the water body, with higher abundances in the wet season, relative to the dry season. Among these, sulfonamide resistance genes (sul1, sul2) displayed the highest absolute abundance in the river and soil. The ARGs and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) were significantly correlated with bacterial abundance, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+), and total nitrogen (TN) levels in the water environment (Mantel test, P < 0.01). Structural equation modeling revealed the direct input of point-source and nonpoint-source ARGs in this area contributed less to the overall level of the ARGs in the water. Among the multiple drivers, the MGEs derived from wastewater treatment plant and anthropogenic nonpoint area positively and directly affected the ARG profiles in water (P < 0.01), rather than the factors of bacterial abundance and physicochemical properties. According to this study, the exogenous MGEs from anthropogenic activities are the main driver for the enrichment of ARGs in the valley-type urban river environment.

Successful expansion of hospital-associated clone of vanA-positive vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis ST9 to an anthropogenically polluted mangrove in Brazil

Mangrove ecosystems are hotspots of biodiversity, but have been threatened by anthropogenic activities. Vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) are nosocomial bacteria classified as high priority by the World Health Organization (WHO). Herein, we describe the identification and genomic characteristics of a vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecalis strain isolated from a highly impacted mangrove ecosystem of the northeastern Brazilian, in 2021. Genomic analysis confirmed the existence of the transposon Tn1546-vanA and clinically relevant antimicrobial resistance genes, such as streptogramins, tetracycline, phenicols, and fluoroquinolones. Virulome analysis identified several genes associated to adherence, immune modulation, biofilm, and exoenzymes production. The UFSEfl strain was assigned to sequence type (ST9), whereas phylogenomic analysis with publicly available genomes from a worldwide confirmed clonal relatedness with a hospital-associated Brazilian clone. Our findings highlight the successful expansion of hospital-associated VRE in a mangrove area and shed light on the need for strengthening genomic surveillance of WHO priority pathogens in these vital ecosystems.

Emergence of nanoplastics in the aquatic environment and possible impacts on aquatic organisms

Plastic production on a global scale is instrumental in advancing modern society. However, plastic can be broken down by mechanical and chemical forces of humans and nature, and knowledge of the fate and effects of plastic, especially nanoplastics, in the aquatic environment remains poor. We provide an overview of current knowledge on the environmental occurrence and toxicity of nanoplastics, and suggestions for future research. There are nanoplastics present in seas, rivers, and nature reserves from Asia, Europe, Antarctica, and the Arctic Ocean at levels of 0.3-488 microgram per liter. Once in the aquatic environment, nanoplastics accumulate in plankton, nekton, benthos through ingestion and adherence, with multiple toxic results including inhibited growth, reproductive abnormalities, oxidative stress, and immune system dysfunction. Further investigations should focus on chemical analysis methods for nanoplastics, effect and mechanism of nanoplastics at environmental relevant concentrations in aquatic organisms, as well as the mechanism of the Trojan horse effect of nanoplastics.

A review of polybrominated diphenyl ethers and novel brominated flame retardants in Chinese aquatic environment: Source, occurrence, distribution, and ecological risk assessment

Due to the widespread commercial production and use of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) in China, their potential impact on human health development should not be underestimated. This review searched the literature on Polybrominated diphenyl ethers and Novel brominated flame retardant (PBDEs and NBFRs) (broad BFRs) in the aquatic environment (including surface water and sediment) in China over the last decade. It was found that PBDEs and NBFRs entered the aquatic environment through four main pathways, atmospheric deposition, surface runoff, sewage effluent and microplastic decomposition. The distribution of PBDEs and NBFRs in the aquatic environment was highly correlated with the local economic structure and population density. In addition, a preliminary risk assessment of existing PBDEs and PBDEs in sediments showed that areas with high-risk quotient values were always located in coastal areas with e-waste dismantling sites, which was mainly attributed to the historical legacy of electronic waste. This research provides help for the human health development and regional risk planning management posed by PBDEs and NBFRs.

Greater transmission capacities and small-world characteristics of bacterial communities in the above- than those in the below- ground niches of a typical submerged macrophyte, Vallisneria natans

Leaves and roots of submerged macrophytes provide extended surfaces and stable internal tissues for distinct microorganisms to rest, but how these microorganisms interact with each other across different niches and ultimately drive the distribution through horizontal and vertical transmissions remains largely undetermined. Knowledge of the mechanisms of assemblage and transmission in aquatic macrophytes-associated microbial communities will help to better understanding their important roles in plant fitness and benefit ecological functions. Here, we conducted a microcosmic experiment based on in situ lake samples to investigate the bacterial community assemblage, transmission, and co-occurrence patterns in different niches of a typical submerged macrophyte, Vallisneria natans (V. natans), including seed endosphere, as well as environmental (water and bulk sediment), epiphytic (phyllosphere and rhizosphere), and endophytic (leaf and root endosphere) microhabitats of both leaves and roots representatives of the above- and below- ground niches (AGNs and BGNs), respectively. We found the bacterial communities colonized in epiphytic niches not only exhibited the highest diversity compared to adjacent environmental and endophytic niches, but also dominated the interactions between those bacterial members of neighboring niches in both AGNs and BGNs. The host plants promoted niche specificity at bacterial community-level, as confirmed by the proportion of bacterial specialists increased with plant proximity, especially in the BGNs. Furthermore, the bacterial taxa colonized in the AGNs exhibited higher horizontal and vertical transmission capacities than those in the BGNs, especially in the vertical transmission from seeds to leaves (41.38 %) than roots (0.42 %). Meanwhile, the bacterial co-occurrence network in AGNs was shown to have stronger small-world characteristics but weaker stability than those in the BGNs. Overall, this study cast new light on the plant microbiome in the aquatic environment, thus better promoting the potential development of strategies for breeding aquatic macrophyte holobiont with enhanced water purification and pollutant removal capabilities in the future.

Ecological risk assessment of pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting compounds in Brazilian surface waters

Pharmaceuticals and endocrine disrupting compounds are organic micropollutants that can cause adverse effects at low concentrations. Their occurrence in surface waters has been reported in several countries, including Brazil, at concentrations on the order of ngL-1, while the concentrations at which toxic effects are observed are often in the range of mg.L-1 to μg.L -1, however few studies have been undertaken to characterize risks they represent in Brazilian surface waters. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the ecological risk to Brazilian surface waters caused by the presence of pharmaceuticals and natural and environmental estrogens. Twenty-nine pharmaceuticals, hormones and environmental estrogens were included in the risk assessment while twelve were discarded due to insufficient data availability. The endocrine disrupting compounds were the most frequently detected (39.8% of the reported concentrations), followed by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (16.3%), antibiotics (6.6%), antiseptics (5.1%), analgesics (5.1%), antihypertensives (4.6%), and to a lesser extent, lipid controllers, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, antihistamines, antivirals and corticosteroids. Bisphenol-A was the most frequently detected compound, followed by diclofenac, 17-β-estradiol, 17-α-ethynilestradiol, naproxen, triclosan and 4-n-nonylphenol. Acute ecological risk was predicted in two thirds and chronic risk in one third of the water bodies surveyed. The presence of diclofenac or triclosan was determinant for acute risk while estrogenic hormones proved to be decisive for chronic risk. In addition to natural and synthetic endocrine disruptors, the pharmacological groups estimated to have the highest average associated risks were non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, followed by anticonvulsants. No discharge limits exist for most of the compounds found to contribute to ecological risks, indicating the need for regulatory action by the proper Brazilian authorities.

Unveiling the traits of dry and wet pre-magnetized zero-valent iron-activated peroxymonosulfate: Degradation of oxytetracycline

It has been previously reported that pre-magnetization could enhance the efficacy of zero-valent iron (ZVI) in removing contaminants. However, little is known about the effects and persistence of different magnetization methods on pre-magnetized ZVI (Pre-ZVI) when used in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). Gaining a comprehensive understanding of the durability of various pre-magnetization methods in enhancing the removal efficiency of different pollutants will significantly impact the widespread utilization of Pre-ZVI in practical engineering. Herein, we investigated the efficiency of dry and wet Pre-ZVI-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) in eliminating oxytetracycline (OTC) and evaluated the durability of Pre-ZVI. Additionally, we examined several factors that influence the degradation process's efficiency. Our results found that the reaction constant k values corresponding to the dry Pre-ZVI/PMS system at the pH values of 3, 7, and 9 varied from approximately 0.0384, 0.0331, and 0.0349 (day 1) to roughly 0.0297, 0.0278, and 0.0314 (day 30), respectively. Meanwhile, the wet Pre-ZVI/PMS system exhibited k values ranging from approximately 0.0392, 0.0349, and 0.0374 (day 1) to roughly 0.0380, 0.0291, and 0.0322 (day 30), respectively. Moreover, we proposed four OTC degradation pathways using LC-MS/MS and density functional theory calculations. The toxicity of the degradation products was assessed using the ecological structure activity relationship and the toxicity estimation software tool. Overall, this study provides insights into the application of Pre-ZVI/PMS that can be selectively used to eliminate tetracycline antibiotics from water.

Occurrence of microplastics in three types of household cleaning products and their estimated emissions into the aquatic environment

Microplastics (MPs) in household cleaning products are a significant source of primary MPs. However, their presence in these products remain largely unknown. In this study, three types of common household cleaning products (laundry detergents, toilet bowl cleaners, and dishwashing detergents) were examined to assess the presence of MPs. The potential global emissions of MPs into aquatic environments resulting from the use of these products were estimated using statistics on global wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and household cleaning product markets. The average abundance of MPs in household cleaning products was 564.97 ± 327.83 n·kg-1, with toilet bowl cleaners having a significantly higher abundance than the other two products. The most commonly detected polymers in these products were polyamide (PA), silicone, polyurethane (PU), acrylate copolymer (ACR), polyethylene (PE), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), while the size of the MPs ranged from 21.34 to 442.97 μm, with 81.52 % being <50 μm and 87.32 % being fragment-shaped. The estimated annual MP emissions from these three types of household cleaning products were 3.88 × 1013 ± 1.35 × 1013, with toilet bowl cleaners accounting for 56.44 % of the total emissions. MPs directly released without treatment in WWTPs (2.46 × 1013 n year-1) accounted for 63.40 % of the total emissions, highlighting the importance of increasing the treated rate of wastewater to reduce MP emissions. Sensitivity tests indicated that increasing the MP removal rates of secondary and tertiary WWTPs could also effectively reduce MP emissions. Moreover, gross and per capita MP emissions in 149 countries showed significant differences, which could be attributed to population, market size, demand for household cleaning products, and the level of MP removal among different countries. The findings of this study provide important insights into controlling MP contamination in household cleaning products.

Surface water in Lower Saxony: A reservoir for multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales

The emergence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase and carbapenemase-producing Enterobacterales (ESBL-E and CPE, respectively) is a threat to modern medicine, as infections become increasingly difficult to treat. These bacteria have been detected in aquatic environments, which raises concerns about the potential spread of antibiotic resistance through water. Therefore, we investigated the occurrence of ESBL-E and CPE in surface water in Lower Saxony, Germany, using phenotypic and genotypic methods. Water samples were collected from two rivers, five water canals near farms, and 18 swimming lakes. ESBL-E and CPE were isolated from these samples using filters and selective agars. All isolates were analyzed by whole genome sequencing. Multidrug-resistant Enterobacterales were detected in 4/25 (16%) water bodies, including 1/2 rivers, 2/5 water canals and 1/18 lakes. Among all samples, isolates belonging to five different species/species complexes were detected: Escherichia coli (n = 10), Enterobacter cloacae complex (n = 4), Citrobacter freundii (n = 3), Citrobacter braakii (n = 2), and Klebsiella pneumoniae (n = 2). Of the 21 isolates, 13 (62%) were resistant at least to 3rd generation cephalosporins and eight (38%) additionally to carbapenems. CPE isolates harbored blaKPC-2 (n = 5), blaKPC-2 and blaVIM-1 (n = 2), or blaOXA-181 (n = 1); additionally, mcr-9 was detected in one isolate. Two out of eight CPE isolates were resistant to cefiderocol and two to colistin. Resistance to 3rd generation cephalosporins was mediated by ESBL (n = 10) or AmpC (n = 3). The presence of AmpC-producing Enterobacterales, ESBL-E and CPE in northern German surface water samples is alarming and highlights the importance of aquatic environments as a potential source of MDR bacteria.

Review on impacts of micro- and nano-plastic on aquatic ecosystems and mitigation strategies

The rapid proliferation of microplastics (MPs) and nanoplastics (NPs) in our environment presents a formidable hazard to both biotic and abiotic components. These pollutants originate from various sources, including commercial production and the breakdown of larger plastic particles. Widespread contamination of the human body, agroecosystems, and animals occurs through ingestion, entry into the food chain, and inhalation. Consequently, the imperative to devise innovative methods for MPs and NPs remediation has become increasingly apparent. This review explores the current landscape of strategies proposed to mitigate the escalating threats associated with plastic waste. Among the array of methods in use, microbial remediation emerges as a promising avenue for the decomposition and reclamation of MPs and NPs. In response to the growing concern, numerous nations have already implemented or are in the process of adopting regulations to curtail MPs and NPs in aquatic habitats. This paper aims to address this gap by delving into the environmental fate, behaviour, transport, ecotoxicity, and management of MPs and NPs particles within the context of nanoscience, microbial ecology, and remediation technologies. Key findings of this review encompass the intricate interdependencies between MPs and NPs and their ecosystems. The ecological impact, from fate to ecotoxicity, is scrutinized in light of the burgeoning environmental imperative. As a result, this review not only provides an encompassing understanding of the ecological ramifications of MPs and NPs but also highlights the pressing need for further research, innovation, and informed interventions.

Aquatic environment impacts of floating photovoltaic and implications for climate change challenges

With the aggravation of global warming and the increasing demand for energy, the development of renewable energy is imminent. Floating photovoltaic (FPV) is a new form of renewable energy generation. However, the impact of FPV on the aquatic environment is still unclear. By long-term empirical monitoring and data analysis, this paper reveals the shading effect of large-scale FPV power station on aquatic environment for the first time. The results show that: (1) Compared with the non-photovoltaic (NP) zone, FPV only significantly reduces the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the photovoltaic (P) zone. (2) The concentration of chlorophyll a, nitrate nitrogen and total phosphorus increase, while pH and ammonia nitrogen decrease. FPV only causes an effect of the same order of magnitude as the initial concentration, and has no significant adverse effects on the nutritional status of the water body at a coverage ratio less than 50%. (3) FPV has a cooling effect on the water body during the daytime and a thermal insulation effect at night, with the most pronounced impact on peak water temperature (Tw). The heating and cooling process of Tw in P zone usually lags behind the NP zone by 1-3 h. The diurnal fluctuation and vertical difference of Tw as well as the stability of water body are reduced under the shading of FPV, alleviating the influence of climate change on Tw and water body stratification. (4) If 10% of the water area larger than 1 km2 in China are used to develop FPV, more than 900 million tons of CO2 emissions can be reduced, and about 5 billion m3 water can be saved, which is significant in the context of climate change. In general, this paper provides a reference for the future aquatic environmental impact assessment of FPV and the formulation of related policies.

The hind information: Exploring the impact of physical damage on mask microbial composition in the aquatic environment

Due to poor management and the lack of environmental awareness, lots of masks (an emerging form of plastic pollution) are discarded into the environment during the COVID-19, thereby jeopardizing the health of humans and the environment. Our study introduces a novel perspective by examining the impact of physical damage on the microbial composition of masks in the water environment. We focus on the variations in biofilm formation on each layer of both damaged and undamaged masks, which allows us to understand more about the biofilm on each layer and the significant changes that occur when masks are physically damaged. Research has shown that the community structure of microorganisms on discarded masks can be altered in just ten days, showing an evolution from undifferentiated pioneer colonizing species ("non-picky") to adaptive dominant species ("picky"). Especially, considering that discarded masks were inevitably damaged, we found that the biomass on the damaged samples is 1.62-2.38 times higher than that of the undamaged samples, respectively. Moreover, the microbial community structure on it was also significantly different. Genes involved in biogeochemical cycles of nutrients are more enriched in damaged masks. When damaged, the colonization process and community structure in the middle layer significantly differ from those in the inner and outer layers and even enrich more pathogenic bacteria. Based on the above, it is evident that the environmental risk of masks cannot be assessed as a whole, and the middle layer carries a higher risk.

Evaluating crude oil distribution tendencies in a multi-phase aquatic system: Effects of oil type, water chemistry, and mineral sediment

Planning for effective response to crude oil spills into water depends on evidence of oil behavior, including its tendency to become distributed throughout an aquatic system. An improved laboratory method is employed to quantitatively assess crude oil distribution among different layers that form after mixing within a multi-phase system of water and sediment. Mixtures of conventional crude oil or diluted bitumen with different water types in the presence or absence of mineral sediment are first mixed by a standard end-over-end rotary agitation protocol. After a settling period, each mixture's visibly distinct floating, surface oil (e.g., slick or emulsion), subsurface bulk water, and bottom layers are then separated. Finally, the masses of oil, water, and sediment constituting each layer are isolated, quantified, and compared. The novel results reveal how component properties affect oil distribution among layers to inform spill behavior models, risk assessments, and response plans, including applications of spill-treating agents.

Biodegradation, photolysis, and sorption of antibiotics in aquatic environments: A scoping review

The presence of antibiotics in surface waters is a potential driver of antibiotic resistance and thus of concern to human and environmental health. Key factors driving the potential impact of antibiotics are their persistence and transport in rivers and lakes. The goal of this study was to describe the peer-reviewed published literature on the photolysis (direct and indirect), sorption, and biodegradation of a selected group of antibiotic compounds following a scoping review methodology. Primary research from 2000 to 2021 was surveyed to compile information on these processes for 25 antibiotics from 6 classes. After compilation and assessment of the available parameters, the results indicate that information is present to predict the rates of direct photolysis and reaction with hydroxyl radical (an indirect photolysis process) for most of the selected antibiotics. There is insufficient or inconsistent information for including other indirect photolysis processes, biodegradation, or removal via sorption to settling particles for most of the targeted antibiotic compounds. Future research should focus on collecting fundamental parameters such as quantum yields, second-order rate constants, normalized biodegradation rates, and organic carbon or surface area normalized sorption coefficients rather than pseudo-first order rate constants or sorption equilibrium constants that apply only to specific conditions/sites.

Deleterious effect of gestagens from wastewater effluent on fish reproduction in aquatic environment: A review

Gestagens are common pollutants accumulated in the aquatic ecosystem. Gestagens are comprised of natural gestagens (i.e. progesterone) and synthetic gestagens (i.e. progestins). The major contributors of gestagens in the environment are paper plant mill effluent, wastewater treatment plants, discharge from pharmaceutical manufacturing, and livestock farming. Gestagens present in the aquatic environment interact with progesterone receptors and other steroid hormone receptors, negatively influencing fish reproduction, development, and behavior. In fish, the gonadotropin induces 17α, 20β-dihydroxy-4-pregnen-3-one (DHP) production, an important steroid hormone involved in gametogenesis. DHP interacts with the membrane progestin receptor (mPR), which regulates sperm motility and oocyte maturation. Gestagens also interfere with the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, which results in altered hormone levels in fish. Moreover, recent studies showed that even at low concentrations exposure to gestagens can have detrimental effects on fish reproduction, including reduced egg production, masculinization, feminization in males, and altered sex ratio, raising concerns about their impact on the fish population. This review highlights the hormonal regulation of sperm motility, oocyte maturation, the concentration of environmental gestagens in the aquatic environment, and their detrimental effects on fish reproduction. However, the long-term and combined impacts of multiple gestagens, including their interactions with other pollutants on fish populations and ecosystems are not well understood. The lack of standardized regulations and monitoring protocols for gestagens pollution in wastewater effluent hampers effective control and management. Nonetheless, advancements in analytical techniques and biomonitoring methods provide potential solutions by enabling better detection and quantification of gestagens in aquatic ecosystems.

Ecotoxicity studies of two atrazine nanoformulations: From the evaluation of stability in media to the effects on aquatic organisms

In the field of agriculture, nanopesticides have been developed as an alternative to the conventional pesticides, being more efficient for pest control. However, before their widespread application it is essential to evaluate their safe application and no environmental impacts. In this paper, we evaluated the toxicological effects of two kinds of atrazine nanoformulations (ATZ NPs) in different biological models (Raphidocelis subcapitata, Danio rerio, Lemna minor, Artemia salina, Lactuca sativa and Daphnia magna) and compared the results with nanoparticle stability over time and the presence of natural organic matter (NOM). The systems showed different characteristics for Zein (ATZ NPZ) (184 ± 2 nm with a PDI of 0.28 ± 0.04 and zeta potential of (30.4 ± 0.05 mV) and poly(epsilon-caprolactone (ATZ PCL) (192 ± 3 nm, polydispersity (PDI) of 0.28 ± 0.28 and zeta potential of -18.8 ± 1.2 mV) nanoparticles. The results showed that there is a correlation between nanoparticles stability and the presence of NOM in the medium and Environmental Concentrations (EC) values. The stability loss or an increase in nanoparticle size result in low toxicity for R. subcapitata and L. minor. For D. magna and D. rerio, the presence of NOM in the medium reduces the ecotoxic effects for ATZ NPZ nanoparticles, but not for ATZ NPs, showing that the nanoparticles characteristics and their interaction with NOM can modulate toxic effects. Nanoparticle stability throughout the evaluation must be considered and become an integral part of toxicity protocol guidelines for nanopesticides, to ensure test quality and authentic results regarding nanopesticide effects in target and non-target organisms.

Pharmaceutical residues in the ecosystem: Antibiotic resistance, health impacts, and removal techniques

Hospital wastewater has emerged as a major category of environmental pollutants over the past two decades, but its prevalence in freshwater is less well documented than other types of contaminants. Due to compound complexity and improper operations, conventional treatment is unable to remove pharmaceuticals from hospital wastewater. Advanced treatment technologies may eliminate pharmaceuticals, but there are still concerns about cost and energy use. There should be a legal and regulatory framework in place to control the flow of hospital wastewater. Here, we review the latest scientific knowledge regarding effective pharmaceutical cleanup strategies and treatment procedures to achieve that goal. Successful treatment techniques are also highlighted, such as pre-treatment or on-site facilities that control hospital wastewater where it is used in hospitals. Due to the prioritization, the regulatory agencies will be able to assess and monitor the concentration of pharmaceutical residues in groundwater, surface water, and drinking water. Based on the data obtained, the conventional WWTPs remove 10-60% of pharmaceutical residues. However, most PhACs are eliminated during the secondary or advanced therapy stages, and an overall elimination rate higher than 90% can be achieved. This review also highlights and compares the suitability of currently used treatment technologies and identifies the merits and demerits of each technology to upgrade the system to tackle future challenges. For this reason, pharmaceutical compound rankings in regulatory agencies should be the subject of prospective studies.

Rapid analysis of pharmaceutical and personal care products by soft microwave-based plasma ionization-linear ion trap mass spectrometer (SMPI-LTQ) in natural water

In this study, a soft microwave plasma torch (SMPT) combined with a mass spectrometer (MS) was used for the first time as an analytical method to detect and analyze various pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments without the need for sample pretreatment. For this purpose, ambient SMPT was used to generate plasma for ionizing the analyte molecules. Accordingly, nine PPCPs were identified by the SMPT-MS, and their identification was verified by collision-induced dissociation (CID). The technique's performance was verified with known PPCP samples, and the limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) obtained over a linear range of 50-1 μg/L were 1.56 to 2.81 and 2.07 to 3.62 μg/L, respectively, with the standard addition recovery rate falling between 87.14 and 115.16%. These results show that the method has excellent sensitivity and selectivity, suggesting that SMPT can rapidly and directly detect PPCPs in environmental water, making it a promising method for rapid water quality inspection.

Extracellular polymeric substances altered the physicochemical properties of molybdenum disulfide nanomaterials to mitigate its toxicity to Chlorella vulgaris

Although the toxic effects of two-dimensional nanomaterials (2D-NMs) have been widely reported, the influence of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) on the environmental fate and risk of 2D-NMs in aquatic environments is largely unknown, and the processes and mechanisms involved remain to be revealed. Herein, we investigated the impact of EPS secreted by microalgae (Chlorella vulgaris (C. vulgaris)) on the environmental transformation and risk of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). We found that the attachment of EPS increased the thickness of MoS2 (from 2 nm to 5 nm), changed it from a monolayer sheet to a fuzzy multilayer structure, and promoted the formation of defects on MoS2. The blue-shift of the peak associated with the plasmon resonances in the 1 T phase and the generation of electron-hole pairs suggested that EPS altered the surface electronic structure of MoS2. EPS interacted mainly with the S atoms on the 1 T phase, and the attachment of EPS promoted the oxidation of MoS2. The reduction in hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) and the decrease in zeta potential indicated that EPS inhibited the agglomeration behavior of MoS2 and enhanced its dispersion and stability in aqueous media. Notably, EPS reduced the generation of free radicals (superoxide anion (•O2-), singlet oxygen (1O2), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH-)). Furthermore, EPS mitigated the toxicity of MoS2 to C. vulgaris, such as attenuated reduction in biomass and chlorophyll content. Compared to pristine MoS2, MoS2 + BG11 + EPS exhibited weaker oxidative stress, membrane damage and lipid peroxidation. The adsorption of EPS on MoS2 surface reduced the attachment sites of MoS2, making MoS2 less likely to be enriched on the cell surface. The findings have significant contribution for understanding the interactions between EPS and MoS2 in aquatic ecosystems, providing scientific guidance for risk assessment of 2D-NMs.

Screening and prioritization of organic chemicals in a large river basin by suspect and non-target analysis

Many organic chemicals are present in aquatic environments, but how to screen and prioritize these chemicals has always been a difficult task. Here we investigated organic chemicals in the West River Basin by using a developed non-target identification workflow. A total of 957 chemicals were tentatively identified, with 96 assigned as high confidence levels by matching with reference standards, MassBank spectral library, and using CompTox Chemistry Dashboard database as the compound library for MetFrag. More pesticides and their transformation products (e.g., metolachlor ESA, acetochlor ESA, deethylatrazine, and hydroxyatrazine) were detected in the wet season due to the increasing usage. High detection of pharmaceutical and personal care products and their transformation products in the tributaries was linked to rural farming and human activities. Irbesartan that is used to treat high blood pressure was recognized in the river and positive correlations between some detected chemicals and irbesartan were observed, indicating a domestic wastewater source. Ecological risks of the identified chemicals were calculated by toxicological prioritization ranking schemes, and 24 chemicals showed high ToxPi scores in the river. The results from this study show the presence of a large number of emerging organic chemicals in our waterways, and demonstrated conceptual schemes for integrating risk assessment into a non-target screening workflow.

Distribution, bioaccumulation, and trace element transfer among trophic levels in the southeastern Gulf of California

Our understanding of the trophic transfer of pollutants in marine subtropical ecosystems remains limited due to the complexity of their food webs. Thus, we aimed to evaluate Cd, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Zn sources, incorporation, and trophodynamics throughout the food web of the southeastern Gulf of California by stomach content analysis, stable isotope analysis, isotope mixing models, and trace element analysis in biological and environmental matrices. The food web comprised three main trophic guilds (TG1, TG2, and TG3). The bioaccumulation of Cd and Zn from seawater was efficient (> 1000) in TG2 and TG3. Bioaccumulation factor from sediment (BSAF >1) evidenced of Cd in all trophic guilds. In addition, non-trophic Cd relationships were identified in the food web. Based on the trophic magnification factor (TMF), Mn and Pb showed biodilution (TMFMn = 0.38; TMFPb = 0.16), while Cu and Zn exhibited biomagnification (TMFCu = 2.08; TMFZn = 3.31).

Face mask derived micro(nano)plastics and organic compounds potentially induce threat to aquatic ecosystem security revealed by toxicogenomics-based assay

Micro(nano)plastics widely detected in aquatic environments have caused serious threat to water quality security. However, as a potential important source of micro(nano)plastics in surface water during the COVID-19 pandemic, the ecological risks of face mask waste to aquatic environments remain poorly understood. Herein, we comprehensively characterized the micro(nano)plastics and organic compounds released from four daily used face masks in aqueous environments and further evaluated their potential impacts on aquatic ecosystem safety by quantitative genotoxicity assay. Results from spectroscopy and high-resolution mass spectrum showed that plastic microfibers/particles (∼11%-83%) and leachable organic compounds (∼15%-87%) were dominantly emitted pollutants, which were significantly higher than nanoplastics (< ∼5%) based on mass of carbon. Additionally, a toxicogenomics approach using green fluorescence protein-fused whole-cell array revealed that membrane stress was the primary response upon the exposure to micro(nano)plastics, whereas the emitted organic chemicals were mainly responsible for DNA damage involving most of the DNA repair pathways (e.g., base/nucleotide excision repair, mismatch repair, double-strand break repair), implying their severe threat to membrane structure and DNA replication of microorganisms. Therefore, the persistent release of discarded face masks derived pollutants might exacerbate water quality and even adversely affect aquatic microbial functions. These findings would contribute to unraveling the potential effects of face mask waste on aquatic ecosystem security and highlight the necessity for more developed management regulations in face mask disposal.

Assessment of toxicity potential of neglected Mithi River water from Mumbai megacity, India, in zebrafish using embryotoxicity, teratogenicity, and genotoxicity biomarkers

The Mithi River begins at Vihar Lake and flows through the industrial hub of the city of Mumbai, India, and merges with the Arabian Sea at Mahim Creek. The current study was carried out to assess the ecotoxicological effects of the Mithi River surface water in zebrafish (Danio rerio) embryos. Water samples were collected from ten sampling sites (S1 to S10) located along the course of the Mithi River. The toxicity of water samples was assessed using a zebrafish embryo toxicity test (ZFET). Water samples were diluted from all sites at 1:0, 1:2, 1:4, 1:8, 1:16, 1:32, 1:64, and 1:128 times. The lowest and highest LDil 20 values for 96 h were estimated as 9.16 and 74.18 respectively for the S2 and S5 sites. The results of embryotoxicity and teratogenicity assays indicated a significant difference (p < 0.0001) between embryos exposed to control and sampling sites (except S1) for various endpoints such as mortality, egg coagulation, pericardial edema, yolk sac edema, tail bend, and skeletal deformities. The histopathological analysis revealed various lesions, ascertaining the toxic effects of water samples. The comet assay revealed significantly higher DNA damage (except S1) in embryos exposed to sites S5 and S6 with OTM values of 4.46 and 2.48 respectively. The results indicated that the Mithi River is polluted with maximum pollution load at the middle stretches. The study further indicated that the pollutants in the Mithi River (except S1) could potentially be hazardous to the aquatic organisms; therefore, continuous biomonitoring of the river is needed for its revival.

Design and application of a novel culturing chip (cChip) for culturing the uncultured aquatic microorganisms

Culturing uncultured microorganisms is an important aspect of microbiology. Once cultured, these microorganisms can be a source of useful antibiotics, enzymes etc. In this study, we have designed a novel culturing chip (cChip) to facilitate the growth of uncultured aquatic bacterial community by concentrating the samples. cChip was optimized for microbial growth using known bacteria in the laboratory as a pre-experiment. Then microorganisms from a freshwater lake were concentrated and inoculated, before putting the inoculated cChip in a simulated lake environment and further sub-culturing on laboratory media. High-throughput sequencing and traditional culturing were also performed for comparison. These three methods were able to detect 265 genera of microorganisms in the sample, of which 78.87% were detected by high-throughput sequencing, 30.94% by cChip, while only 6.42% were obtained by traditional culture. Moreover, all microorganisms obtained by traditional culture were also cultured using the cChip. A total of 45 new strains were isolated from the cChip, and their 16S rRNA gene sequences were 91.35% to 98.7% similar to their closest relatives according to NCBI GenBank database. We conclude that the design and simple operation of cChip can improve the culture efficiency of traditional culture by almost 5 times. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report comparing a novel culturing method with high-throughput sequencing data and traditional culturing of the same samples.

Polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the water environment: A review on toxicity, microbial biodegradation, systematic biological advancements, and environmental fate

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are considered a major class of organic contaminants or pollutants, which are poisonous, mutagenic, genotoxic, and/or carcinogenic. Due to their ubiquitous occurrence and recalcitrance, PAHs-related pollution possesses significant public health and environmental concerns. Increasing the understanding of PAHs' negative impacts on ecosystems and human health has encouraged more researchers to focus on eliminating these pollutants from the environment. Nutrients available in the aqueous phase, the amount and type of microbes in the culture, and the PAHs' nature and molecular characteristics are the common factors influencing the microbial breakdown of PAHs. In recent decades, microbial community analyses, biochemical pathways, enzyme systems, gene organization, and genetic regulation related to PAH degradation have been intensively researched. Although xenobiotic-degrading microbes have a lot of potential for restoring the damaged ecosystems in a cost-effective and efficient manner, their role and strength to eliminate the refractory PAH compounds using innovative technologies are still to be explored. Recent analytical biochemistry and genetically engineered technologies have aided in improving the effectiveness of PAHs' breakdown by microorganisms, creating and developing advanced bioremediation techniques. Optimizing the key characteristics like the adsorption, bioavailability, and mass transfer of PAH boosts the microorganisms' bioremediation performance, especially in the natural aquatic water bodies. This review's primary goal is to provide an understanding of recent information about how PAHs are degraded and/or transformed in the aquatic environment by halophilic archaea, bacteria, algae, and fungi. Furthermore, the removal mechanisms of PAH in the marine/aquatic environment are discussed in terms of the recent systemic advancements in microbial degradation methodologies. The review outputs would assist in facilitating the development of new insights into PAH bioremediation.

Long-term release kinetic characteristics of microplastic from commonly used masks into water under simulated natural environments

Masks-related microplastic pollution poses a new threat to the environment and human health that has gained increasing concern. However, the long-term release kinetics of microplastic from masks in aquatic environments have yet to studied, which hampers its risk assessment. Four types of masks, namely cotton mask, fashion mask, N95 mask, and disposable surgical mask were exposed to systematically simulated natural water environments to determine the time-dependent microplastic release characteristics at 3, 6, 9, and 12 months, respectively. In addition, the structure changes of employed masks were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was applied to analyze the chemical composition and groups of released microplastic fibers. Our results showed that the simulated natural water environment could degrade four types of masks and continuously produce microplastic fibers/fragments in a time-dependent manner. The dominant size of released particles/fibers was below 20 μm across four types of face masks. The physical structure of all four masks was damaged to varying degrees concomitant with photo-oxidation reaction. Collectively, we characterized the long-term release kinetics of microplastic from four types of commonly used masks under a well-mimic real word water environment. Our findings suggest that urgent action must be taken to properly manage disposable masks and ultimately limit the health threats associated with discarded masks.

Antiviral drugs in wastewater are on the rise as emerging contaminants: A comprehensive review of spatiotemporal characteristics, removal technologies and environmental risks

Antiviral drugs (ATVs) are widely used to treat illnesses caused by viruses. Particularly, ATVs were consumed in such large quantities during the pandemic that high concentrations were detected in wastewater and aquatic environment. Since ATVs are not fully absorbed by the human or animal body, this results in large amounts of them being discharged into the sewage through urine or feces. Most ATVs can be degraded by microbes at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), while some ATVs either require deep treatment to reduce concentration and toxicity. Parent and metabolites residing in effluent posed a varying degree of risk when entering the aquatic environment, while increasing the potential of natural reservoirs for environmentally acquired antiviral drug resistance potential. There is a rising research on the behavior of ATVs in the environment has surged since the pandemic. In the context of multiple viral diseases worldwide, especially during the current COVID-19 pandemic, a comprehensive assessment of the occurrence, removal, and risk of ATVs is urgently needed. This review aims to discuss the fate of ATVs in WWTPs from various regions in the world with wastewater as the main analyzing object. The ultimate goal is to focus on ATVs with high ecological impact and regulate their use or develop advanced treatment technologies to mitigate the risk to the environment.

In-situ and real-time nano/microplastic coatings and dynamics in water using nano-DIHM: A novel capability for the plastic life cycle research

A novel nano-digital inline holographic microscope (nano-DIHM) was used to advance in-situ and real-time nano/microplastic physicochemical research, such as particle coatings and dynamic processes in water. Nano-DIHM data provided evidence of distinct coating patterns on nano/microplastic particles by oleic acid, magnetite, and phytoplankton, representing organic, inorganic, and biological coatings widely present in the natural surroundings. A high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy confirmed nano-DIHM data, demonstrating its nano/microplastic research capabilities. The sedimentation of two plastic size categories was examined: (a) ∼10 to 700 µm, and (b) ∼ 1 to 5 mm. Particle size was the primary factor affecting the sedimentation for studied (a) microplastics and (b) pellets. Two types of silicone rubbers exhibited different sedimentation processes. We also demonstrated that inorganic ions in seawater and oleic acid organic coatings altered the sedimentation velocity of studied plastics by 9 - 13% and 5 - 9%, respectively. Semi-empirical probability functions were developed and incorporated into a numerical model (CaMPSim-3D) to simulate the transport of studied microplastics and pellets in the Saint John River estuary. Water dynamics was the driving force of plastic transport, yet the accumulation of plastics was selectively dependant on particle physicochemical properties such as size and density by ∼ 7%. The usage of nano-DIHM for targeted identification of nano/microplastic hotspots and aquatic plastic wastes remediation were discussed.

Multigenerational effects of microplastic fragments derived from polyethylene terephthalate bottles on duckweed Lemna minor: Size-dependent effects of microplastics on photosynthesis

The 2019 global coronavirus disease pandemic has led to an increase in the demand for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) packaging. Although PET is one of the most recycled plastics, it is likely to enter the aquatic ecosystem. To date, the chronic effects of PET microplastics (MPs) on aquatic plants have not been fully understood. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the adverse effects of PET MP fragments derived from PET bottles on the aquatic duckweed plant Lemna minor through a multigenerational study. We conducted acute (3-day exposure) and multigenerational (10 generations from P0 to F9) tests using different-sized PET fragments (PET_0-200, < 200 μm; PET_200-300, 200-300 μm; and PET_300-500, 300-500 μm). Different parameters, including frond number, growth rate based on the frond area, total root length, longest root length, and photosynthesis, were evaluated. The acute test revealed that photosynthesis in L. minor was negatively affected by exposure to small-sized PET fragments (PET_0-200). In contrast, the results of the multigenerational test revealed that large-sized PET fragments (PET_300-500) showed substantial negative effects on both the growth and photosynthetic activity of L. minor. Continuous exposure to PET MPs for 10 generations caused disturbances in chloroplast distribution and inhibition of plant photosynthetic activity and growth. The findings of this study may serve as a basis for future research on the generational effects of MPs from various PET products.

Impact of microfiber pollution on aquatic biota: A critical analysis of effects and preventive measures

The widespread use of Personal protective equipments (PPEs) by the healthcare professionals and public due to Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19) pandemic has become a new source for MFs pollution. Mismanaged plastic wastes and random dispose of used surgical face mask end up in large aquatic bodies via small waterways and waste water treatment plants (WWTPs). Microplastics/Microfibres (MPs/MFs) have recently been reported in a variety of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, including water, deep sea sediments, air and soil. Natural components like UV radiation and temperature play a major role in weathering of surgical masks. High loads of MPs/MFs emitted into the aquatic environment are easily consumed by organism's habitat in such ecosystem by disrupting the food chain and causing chronic health problems in the organisms including humans. The aim of this review article is to shed light on these issues and compile the most recent information available regarding the deterioration of surgical face masks in the environment as well as other contaminants and their presence in various environments, particularly with regard to methods that make use of exposure models, biomarkers of exposure, and their limitations. Along with this, the study focuses on identifying gaps in current understanding and highlighting prospective research directions. The literature on surgical face mask pollution and its effects on the biological and physiological systems of various organisms and ecosystems is critically analysed in this review. It also raises awareness of how to properly dispose of used surgical face masks and other PPEs.

Comparative ecotoxicity of graphene, functionalized multi-walled CNTs, and their mixture in freshwater microalgae, Scenedesmus obliquus: analyzing the role of oxidative stress

Due to their remarkable properties, the applications of carbon-based nanomaterials (CNMs) such as graphene and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (f-MWCNTs) are increasing. These CNMs can enter the freshwater environment via numerous routes, potentially exposing various organisms. The current study assesses the effects of graphene, f-MWCNTs, and their binary mixture on the freshwater algal species Scenedesmus obliquus. The concentration for the individual materials was kept at 1 mg L^-1, while graphene and f-MWCNTs were taken at 0.5 mg L^-1 each for the combination. Both the CNMs caused a decrease in cell viability, esterase activity, and photosynthetic efficiency in the cells. The cytotoxic effects were accompanied by increased hydroxyl and superoxide radical generation, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activity (catalase and superoxide dismutase), and mitochondrial membrane potential. Graphene was more toxic compared to f-MWCNTs. The binary mixture of the pollutants demonstrated a synergistic enhancement of the toxic potential. Oxidative stress generation played a critical role in toxicity responses, as noted by a strong correlation between the physiological parameters and the biomarkers of oxidative stress. The outcomes from this study emphasize the significance of considering the combined effects of various CNMs as part of a thorough evaluation of ecotoxicity in freshwater organisms.
