Glutamatergic neurotransmission in the procerebrum (Olfactory center) of a terrestrial mollusk

Visual afferents from an eye in the terrestrial slug Limax valentianus

Terrestrial gastropods have a lens-bearing eye on the tip of their tentacles. There are two morphologically distinct photoreceptors, called Type-I and Type-II photoreceptors, in the retina. Type-I photoreceptors are equipped with highly developed photoreceptive microvilli in their outer rhabdomeric segment, whereas Type-II photoreceptors have short and fewer microvilli. Although both types of photoreceptors send afferent projections directly to the brain, their destinations in the brain, called optic neuropiles, have not been sufficiently investigated. Our recent studies revealed that there are commissural fibers in the cerebral ganglia that transmit photic information acquired by bilateral eyes. Moreover, some of the retinal photoreceptors are connected by gap junctions to the photosensitive brain neurons, suggesting the functional interaction of the photic information between the eye and brain photoreceptors, as well as between bilateral eyes. However, it has not been clarified which type of retinal photoreceptors send commissural projections to the contralateral hemiganglion nor interact with the brain photoreceptors. In the present study, we demonstrated by molecular histological analyses and tracer injections that (1) Type-I and Type-II photoreceptors send glutamatergic afferent projections to the medial and lateral lobes of the ipsilateral optic neuropile, respectively, (2) direct synaptic interaction between bilateral optic nerves occurs in the medial lobe of the optic neuropile, and (3) brain photosensory neurons form gap junctions with the medial lobe of the contralateral optic neuropile. These results reveal an ordered pattern of afferent projections from the retina and provide insight into the different functional roles of retinal photoreceptors.

Regional expression of neuropeptides in the retina of the terrestrial slug Limax valentianus (Gastropoda, Stylommatophora, Limacidae)

Gastropods use lens-bearing eyes to detect ambient light. The retina contains photoreceptors that directly project to the brain. Here we identified the neurotransmitters that the retinal cells use for projection to the brain in the terrestrial slug Limax. We identified 12 genes encoding neuropeptides as well as a novel vesicular glutamate transporter, a marker of glutamatergic neuron, expressed in the retinal cells. Spatial expression profiles of the neuropeptide genes were determined by in situ hybridization. WWamide/MIP1/Pedal peptide2 were co-expressed in the neurons of the accessory retina. In the main retina, prohormone-4 was expressed in the ventro-lateral region. Clionin was expressed in the ventro-medial region. Pedal peptide was expressed in the anterior region of the main retina and in the accessory retina. Enterin was expressed in many neurons, including the accessory retina, but not in the dorsal region. FxRIamide1 and 2 were co-expressed in the posterior region. Prohormone-4 variant was uniformly expressed in many neurons but scarcely in the accessory retina. MIP2 was widely expressed throughout the dorso-ventral axis in the posterio-lateral region of the main retina. Myo1 was expressed in many neurons of the main retina but predominantly in the dorsal region. These expression patterns were confirmed by immunohistochemistry with specific antibodies against the neuropeptides. Projections of these peptidergic retinal neurons were confirmed by immunostaining of the optic nerve. FxRIamide regulates the oscillatory activity in the olfactory center of the terrestrial slug Limax

The terrestrial slug Limax acquires odor-aversion memory. The procerebrum is the secondary olfactory center in the brain of Limax, and functions as the locus of the memory formation and storage. The change in the local field potential oscillation in the procerebrum reflects the information processing of the learned odor. However, it is not fully understood what factors, intrinsic or extrinsic in the procerebrum, alter the oscillatory activity and how it is regulated. In the present study, we found that FxRIamide (Phe-x-Arg-Ile-NH₂), which was previously identified as a myomodulatory peptide in the gastropod Fusinus ferrugineus, downregulates the oscillatory frequency of the local field potential oscillation in the procerebrum of Limax. FxRIamide peptides were encoded by two distinct transcripts, which exhibit partially overlapping expression patterns in the brain. Immunohistochemical staining revealed a scattered distribution of FxRIamide-expressing neurons in the cell mass layer of the procerebrum, in addition to the ramified innervation of FxRIamidergic neurons in the neuropile layers. Down-regulation of the oscillatory frequency of the local field potential was explained by the inhibitory effects of FxRIamide on the bursting neurons, which are the kernels of the local field potential oscillation in the procerebrum. Our study revealed the previously unidentified role of FxRIamide peptides in the network of interneurons of Limax, and these peptides may play a role in the mnemonic functions of the procerebrum.

Low concentrations of oxazepam induce feeding and molecular changes in Radix balthica juveniles

Psychotropics, especially benzodiazepines, are commonly prescribed worldwide. Poorly eliminated at wastewater treatment plants, they belong to a group of emerging contaminants. Due to their interaction with the GABA_A receptor, they may affect the function of the nervous system of non-target organisms, such as aquatic organisms. The toxicity of oxazepam, a very frequently detected benzodiazepine in continental freshwater, has been largely studied in aquatic vertebrates over the last decade. However, its effects on freshwater non-vertebrates have received much less attention. We aimed to evaluate the long-term effects of oxazepam on the juvenile stage of a freshwater gastropod widespread in Europe, Radix balthica. Juveniles were exposed for a month to environmentally-relevant concentrations of oxazepam found in rivers (0.8 μg/L) and effluents (10 μg/L). Three main physiological functions were studied: feeding, growth, and locomotion. Additionally, gene expression analysis was performed to provide insights into toxicity mechanisms. There was a strong short-term activation of the feeding rate at low concentration, whereas the high dose resulted in long-term inhibition of food intake. A significant decrease in mortality rate was observed in juveniles exposed to the lowest dose. Shell growth and locomotor activity did not appear to be affected by oxazepam. Transcriptomic analysis revealed global over-expression of genes involved in the nervous regulation of the feeding, digestive, and locomotion systems after oxazepam exposure. The molecular analysis also revealed a possible interference of animal manipulation with the molecular effects induced by oxazepam exposure. Overall, these results improve our understanding of the effects of the psychoactive drug oxazepam on an aquatic mollusc gastropod.

RFamidergic neurons in the olfactory centers of the terrestrial slug Limax

BACKGROUND

The terrestrial slug Limax has long been used as a model for the study of olfactory information processing and odor learning. Olfactory inputs from the olfactory epithelium are processed in the tentacular ganglion and then in the procerebrum. Glutamate and acetylcholine are the major neurotransmitters used in the procerebrum. Phe-Met-Arg-Phe-NH₂ (FMRFamide) has been shown to be involved in the regulation of the network activity of the procerebrum. Although there are thought to be various RFamide family peptides other than FMRFamide that are potentially recognized by anti-FMRFamide antibody in the central nervous system of mollusks, identifying the entire repertoire of RFamide peptides in Limax has yet to be achieved.

METHODS

In the present study, we made a comprehensive search for RFamide peptide-encoding genes from the transcriptome data of Limax, and identified 12 genes. The expression maps of these RFamide genes were constructed by in situ hybridization in the cerebral ganglia including the procerebrum, and in the superior/inferior tentacles.

RESULTS

Ten of 12 genes were expressed in the procerebrum, and nine of 12 genes were expressed in the tentacular ganglia. Gly-Ser-Leu-Phe-Arg-Phe-NH₂ (GSLFRFamide), which is encoded by two different genes, LFRFamide1 (Leu-Phe-Arg-Phe-NH₂-1) and LFRFamide2 (Leu-Phe-Arg-Phe-NH₂-2), decreased the oscillatory frequency of the local field potential oscillation in the procerebrum when exogenously applied in vitro. We also found by immunohistochemistry that the neurons expressing pedal peptide send efferent projections from the procerebrum back to the tentacular ganglion.

CONCLUSION

Our findings suggest the involvement of a far wider variety of RFamide family peptides in the olfactory information processing in Limax than previously thought.

Nitric oxide-coupled signaling in odor elicited molecular events in the olfactory center of the terrestrial snail, Helix pomatia

Olfaction, a chemosensory modality, plays a pivotal role in the orientation and behavior of invertebrates. The central olfactory processing unit in terrestrial stylomatophoran snails is the procerebrum, which contains NO synthesizing interneurons, whose oscillatory currents are believed to be the base of odor evoked memory formation. Nevertheless, in this model the up- and downstream events of molecular cascades that trigger and follow NO release, respectively, have not been studied. Immunocytochemistry and flow cytometry studies performed on procerebral neural perikarya isolated from the snail Helix pomatia revealed cell populations with discrete DAF-2 fluorescence, indicating the release of different amounts of NO. Glutamate increased the intensity of DAF-2 fluorescence, and the number of DAF-2 positive non-bursting interneurons, through a mechanism likely to involve an NMDA-like receptor. Similarly to glutamate, NO activation induced an increase in intracellular cGMP levels through activation of soluble guanylyl cyclase. Immunohistochemical localization of proteins possessing the phosphorylated target sequence of AGC family kinases (RXXS/T-P), among them protein kinase A (RRXS/T-P), showed striking similarities to the distribution of NOS/cGMP. Activators of cyclic nucleotide synthesis increased the AGC-kinase-dependent phosphorylation of discrete proteins with 28, 45, and 55kDamw. Importantly, exposure of snails to an attractive odorant induced hyperphosphorylation of the 28kDa protein, and increased levels of cGMP synthesis. Protein S-nitrosylation and intercellular activation of protein kinase G were also suggested as alternative components of NO signaling in the snail procerebrum. The present results from Helix pomatia indicate an important role for procerebrum NO/cGMP/PKA signaling pathways in the regulation of olfactory (food-finding) behavior.

Phase-Dependent Modulation of Oscillatory Phase and Synchrony by Long-Lasting Depolarizing Inputs in Central Neurons

Oscillatory neural activities have been implicated in various types of information processing in the CNS. The procerebral (PC) lobe of the land mollusk Limax valentianus shows an ongoing oscillatory local field potential (LFP). Olfactory input increases both the frequency and spatial synchrony of the LFP oscillation by a nitric oxide (NO)-mediated mechanism, but how NO modulates the activity in a specific manner has been unclear. In the present study, we used electrical stimulation and NO uncaging to systematically analyze the response of the LFP oscillation and found phase-dependent effects on phase shifting and synchrony. The neurons that presumably release NO in the PC lobe preferentially fired at phases in which NO has a synchronizing effect, suggesting that the timing of NO release is regulated to induce a stereotyped response to natural sensory stimuli. The phase-response curve (PRC) describes the timing dependence of responses of an oscillatory system to external input. PRCs are usually constructed by recording the temporal shifts of the neural activity in response to brief electrical pulses. However, NO evokes a long-lasting depolarization persisting for several cycles of oscillation. The phase-response relationship obtained by NO stimulation was approximately the integral of the PRC. A similar relationship was also shown for regular firing of mouse cerebellar Purkinje cells receiving step depolarization, suggesting the generality of the results to oscillatory neural systems with highly distinct properties. These results indicate novel dynamic effects of long-lasting inputs on network oscillation and synchrony, which are based on simple and ubiquitous mechanisms.

Target innervation is necessary for neuronal polyploidization in the terrestrial slug Limax

The brain of gastropod mollusks contains many giant neurons with polyploid genomic DNAs. Such DNAs are generated through repeated DNA endoreplication during body growth. However, it is not known what triggers DNA endoreplication in neurons. There are two possibilities: (1) DNAs are replicated in response to some unknown molecules in the hemolymph that reflect the nutritive status of the animal; or (2) DNAs are replicated in response to some unknown factors that are retrogradely transported through axons from the innervated target organs. We first tested whether hemolymph with rich nutrition could induce DNA endoreplication. We tested whether the transplanted brain exhibits enhanced DNA endoreplication like an endogenous brain does when transplanted into the homocoel of the body of a slug whose body growth is promoted by an increased food supply. However, no enhancement was observed in the frequency of DNA endoreplication when we compared the transplanted brains in the growth-promoted and growth-suppressed host slugs, suggesting that the humoral environment is irrelevant to triggering the body growth-dependent DNA endoreplication. Next, we tested the requirement of target innervation by surgically dissecting a unilateral posterior pedal nerve of an endogenous brain. Substantially lower number of neurons exhibited DNA endoreplication in the pedal ganglion ipsilateral to the dissected nerve. These results support the view that enhanced DNA endoreplication is mediated by target innervation and is not brought about through the direct effect of humoral factors in the hemolymph during body growth. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Extrasynaptic glutamate and inhibitory neurotransmission modulate ganglion cell participation during glutamatergic retinal waves

During the first 2 wk of mouse postnatal development, transient retinal circuits give rise to the spontaneous initiation and lateral propagation of depolarizations across the ganglion cell layer (GCL). Glutamatergic retinal waves occur during the second postnatal week, when GCL depolarizations are mediated by ionotropic glutamate receptors. Bipolar cells are the primary source of glutamate in the inner retina, indicating that the propagation of waves depends on their activation. Using the fluorescence resonance energy transfer-based optical sensor of glutamate FLII81E-1μ, we found that retinal waves are accompanied by a large transient increase in extrasynaptic glutamate throughout the inner plexiform layer. Using two-photon Ca(2+) imaging to record spontaneous Ca(2+) transients in large populations of cells, we found that despite this spatially diffuse source of depolarization, only a subset of neurons in the GCL and inner nuclear layer (INL) are robustly depolarized during retinal waves. Application of the glutamate transporter blocker dl-threo-β-benzyloxyaspartate (25 μM) led to a significant increase in cell participation in both layers, indicating that the concentration of extrasynaptic glutamate affects cell participation in both the INL and GCL. In contrast, blocking inhibitory transmission with the GABAA receptor antagonist gabazine and the glycine receptor antagonist strychnine increased cell participation in the GCL without significantly affecting the INL. These data indicate that during development, glutamate spillover provides a spatially diffuse source of depolarization, but that inhibitory circuits dictate which neurons within the GCL participate in retinal waves.

Analysis of DNA endoreplication in the brain neurons in the terrestrial slug, Limax valentianus

DNA endoreplication is the DNA synthesis without cell division, resulting in the generation of a nucleus containing a larger amount of genomic DNA compared to a normal diploid genome. There are many such giant neurons in the molluscan brain that are generated as a result of repeated endoreplication. However, it has been controversial whether the endoreplication is the whole genome replication (polyploidy) or the local amplification of the genes that are necessary for the neuron's function (polyteny/polysomy). Here in this study, we investigated these two possibilities by (1) immunohistochemical analysis of the distribution of 5'-bromodeoxyuridine incorporated into the nuclei of the brain neurons, and by (2) quantitative genomic PCR directed to two different genes expressed in specific brain regions. Our data supported the view that the DNA endoreplication is the whole genome replication rather than the local amplification of a specific genomic region.

GABAergic effects on the slow oscillatory neural activities in the procerebrum of Limax valentianus. Short communication

We examined GABAergic modulation on "slow" oscillation (<1.0 Hz) of the procerebrum in the terrestrial mollusk, Limax valentianus. Short application of GABA-receptor agonists slightly increased the frequency of a periodic oscillation in the procerebrum, whereas persistent application decreased it. GABA-receptor antagonists decreased the oscillatory frequency. The GABA-like immunoreactivities were found in the neuropil and the cell body layers of the procerebrum. Because GABAergic inhibition is known to be essential for the generation of "fast" synchronous neuronal oscillation in the CNSs in othre many animals, our present findings are first evidence suggesting that GABA modulates 'slow' oscillation in the CNS.

Excitatory effects of GABA on procerebrum neurons in a slug

Classical neurotransmitters, such as glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), often have different actions on invertebrate neurons from those reported for vertebrate neurons. In the terrestrial mollusk Limax, glutamate was found to function as an inhibitory transmitter in the procerebrum (PC), but it has not yet been clarified how GABA acts in the PC. We thus examined what effects GABA exerts on PC neurons in the present study. For this purpose, we first applied GABA to isolated PC preparations and recorded postsynaptic currents and potentials in PC neurons. The GABA application reduced the amplitude of inhibitory postsynaptic currents and depolarization-induced outward currents recorded in nonbursting neurons and increased the number of spontaneous spikes of nonbursting neurons. However, direct GABA-induced currents were not observed in either bursting or nonbursting neurons. These results suggest a potential direct effect of GABA on outward currents resulting in enhanced excitability of PC neurons. Next, we measured the change in [Ca2+]i in cultured PC neurons by application of GABA. The GABA application increased spontaneous Ca2+ events in cultured neurons. These Ca2+ events were ascribable to the influx of extracellular Ca2+. We then confirmed the presence of GABA and GABA receptors in the PC. The GABA-like immunoreactivity was observed in the neuropil layers of the PC, and the mRNAs for both GABAA and GABAB receptors were expressed in the PC. In particular, GABAB receptor mRNA, rather than GABAA, was found to be more abundantly expressed in the PC. These results suggest that GABA functions as an excitatory modulator for PC neurons via mainly GABAB receptors.

Whole genome amplification in large neurons of the terrestrial slug Limax

The brain of gastropod mollusks contains giant neurons whose nuclei are enlarged with a large amount of genomic DNA. Such DNA is produced by repeated endoreplication. We have previously demonstrated that the frequency of the neuronal DNA endoreplication is correlative to the body growth of the adult land slug and to the increase in the amount of transcripts within the neuron. However, it has long been controversial whether the neuronal DNA endoreplication entails whole genome amplification (polyploidy), or whether only the necessary genomic loci are amplified (polyteny, polysomy, or cis-amplification by unequal recombination). In the present study, we adopted two modern techniques - quantitative genomic PCR and 5'-bromodeoxyuridine labeling - to distinguish between these two possibilities. Our results demonstrated that multiple genomic loci were amplified to the same extent irrespective of the transcriptional activities at these loci. Moreover, the visceral giant cell, the biggest neuron in the slug's brain, was estimated to contain approximately 10 000-times as much genomic DNA as the haploid amount. The 5'-bromodeoxyuridine-labeling experiments also revealed a uniform DNA synthesis within the nucleus. These results strongly support the idea that the giant neurons contain a polyploid genome rather than a locus-specific amplified genome.

Spontaneous regeneration of the central nervous system in gastropods

Of all organs in mammals including humans, the brain has the most limited regenerative capacity after injury or damage. In spite of extensive efforts to treat ischemic/stroke injury of the brain, thus far no reliable therapeutic method has been developed. However, some molluscan species show remarkable brain regenerative ability and can achieve full functional recovery following injury. The terrestrial pulmonates are equipped with a highly developed olfactory center, called the procerebrum, which is involved in olfactory discrimination and odor-aversion learning. Recent studies revealed that the procerebrum of the land slug can spontaneously recover structurally and functionally relatively soon after injury. Surprisingly, no exogenous interventions are required for this reconstitutive repair. The neurogenesis continues in the procerebrum in adult slugs as in the hippocampus and the olfactory bulb of mammals, and the reconstitutive regeneration seems to be mediated by enhanced neurogenesis. In this review, we discuss the relationship between neurogenesis and the regenerative ability of the brain, and also the evolutionary origin of the brain structures in which adult neurogenesis has been observed.

DNA endoreplication in the brain neurons during body growth of an adult slug

Endoreplication is DNA synthesis without cell division. Giant neurons observed in the brains of mollusks are thought to be generated as a result of DNA endoreplication. It has been hypothesized that neuronal size becomes larger in parallel with an increase in body size and that DNA endoreplication is involved in this process to meet the increasing demand for macromolecules in neurons. There is, however, no experimental evidence for this hypothesis to date. In the present study, we investigated the following quantitatively: (1) the size of the brain and each ganglion, (2) the size of identified neurons, (3) the total number of neurons undergoing DNA endoreplication, (4) the total number of the neurons containing a cardioexcitatory peptide, and (5) the gene expression level per neuron, using terrestrial slugs whose body growth was regulated through the amount of food supplied in the laboratory. The body growth was accompanied by increases in the sizes of both neurons and ganglia and triggered more frequent DNA endoreplication events in each ganglion of the growth-promoted slugs, without increasing the total number of neurons. Increase in the neuronal size also involved the increase in the amount of transcripts expressed in a single neuron. This is the first quantitative evidence showing that the DNA endoreplication, neuronal size, and gene expression are increased concomitantly with body growth in adult mollusks.

Two pairs of tentacles and a pair of procerebra: optimized functions and redundant structures in the sensory and central organs involved in olfactory learning of terrestrial pulmonates

Terrestrial pulmonates can learn olfactory-aversion tasks and retain them in their long-term memory. To elucidate the cellular mechanisms underlying learning and memory, researchers have focused on both the peripheral and central components of olfaction: two pairs of tentacles (the superior and inferior tentacles) and a pair of procerebra, respectively. Data from tentacle-amputation experiments showed that either pair of tentacles is sufficient for olfactory learning. Results of procerebrum lesion experiments showed that the procerebra are necessary for olfactory learning but that either one of the two procerebra, rather than both, is used for each olfactory learning event. Together, these data suggest that there is a redundancy in the structures of terrestrial pulmonates necessary for olfactory learning. In our commentary we exemplify and discuss functional optimization and structural redundancy in the sensory and central organs involved in olfactory learning and memory in terrestrial pulmonates.

Effects of tentacle amputation and regeneration on the morphology and activity of the olfactory center of the terrestrial slug Limax valentianus

The tentacles of pulmonates regenerate spontaneously following amputation. The regenerated tentacle is equipped with all the elements necessary for normal olfactory functioning, and the slugs can behave as well as they did before the tentacle amputation. However, it is not known what changes occur to the olfactory center procerebrum in the brain at the morphological and physiological levels. Here, we investigated the innervation of tentacular nerves into the procerebrum by examining the size of the terminal mass (input layer from tentacular nerves) of the procerebrum and also by staining afferent nerves immunohistochemically at 15, 58 and 75 days following unilateral amputation of the superior and inferior tentacles. The size of the terminal mass was significantly decreased, and the Phe-Met-Arg-Phe-NH2ergic (FMRFamidergic) afferent nerves disappeared by 15 days following the tentacle amputation. However, the size of the terminal mass had recovered substantially by 58 days, as the tentacle regenerated. The FMRFamidergic innervation into the cerebral ganglion was also restored by this time. An extended recovery (75 days), however, did not result in any further increase in the size of the terminal mass. We also recorded the local field potential (LFP) oscillation in the procerebrum. We found that the oscillatory frequency of the LFP had decreased at 15 days following the tentacle amputation but had recovered at 58 and 75 days. These results suggest that the amputation and regrowth of the tentacle are accompanied by the respective degeneration and re-innervation of olfactory nerves, and these changes in the innervation status affect the basal state of LFP oscillation.

Glutamate transporters in the central nervous system of a pond snail

Previous studies on glutamate (GLU) and its receptors in the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis have suggested that GLU functions as a neurotransmitter in various behaviors, particularly for generation of feeding rhythm. The uptake mechanism of GLU is not yet known in Lymnaea. In the present study, we characterized the GLU transporters and examined their functions in the feeding circuits of the central nervous system (CNS) in Lymnaea. First, measurement of the accumulation of (3)H-labeled GLU revealed the presence of GLU transport systems in the Lymnaea CNS. The highest accumulation rate was observed in the buccal ganglia, supporting the involvement of GLU transport systems in feeding behavior. Second, we cloned two types of GLU transporters from the Lymnaea CNS, the excitatory amino acid transporter (LymEAAT) and the vesicular GLU transporter (LymVGLUT). When we compared their amino acid sequences with those of mammalian EAATs and VGLUTs, we found that the functional domains of both types are well conserved. Third, in situ hybridization revealed that the mRNAs of LymEAAT and LymVGLUT are localized in large populations of nerve cells, including the major feeding motoneurons in the buccal ganglia. Finally, we inhibited LymEAAT and found that changes in the firing patterns of the feeding motoneurons that have GLUergic input were similar to those obtained following stimulation with GLU. Our results confirmed the presence of GLU uptake systems in the Lymnaea CNS and showed that LymEAAT is required for proper rhythm generation, particularly for generation of the feeding rhythm.

Spontaneous recovery of the injured higher olfactory center in the terrestrial slug limax

Background

Of all organs and tissues in adult mammals, the brain shows the most limited regeneration and recovery after injury. This is one reason why treating neurological damage such as ischemic injury after stroke presents such a challenge. Here we report a novel mode of regeneration which the slug's cognitive center, the procerebrum, shows after surgical lesioning in the adult. It is well known that the land slug Limax possesses the capacity to demonstrate conditioned food aversion. This learning ability critically depends on the procerebrum, which is the higher olfactory center in the brain of the terrestrial mollusk.

Principal Findings

In the present study, after a 1-month recovery period post-surgical lesioning of the procerebrum we investigated whether the brain of the slug shows recovery from damage. We found that learning ability, local field potential oscillation, and the number of cells in the procerebrum (PC) all recovered spontaneously within 1 month of bilateral lesioning of the PC. Moreover, neurogenesis was enhanced in the lesioned PC. However, memory acquired before the surgery could not be retrieved 1 month after surgery although the procerebrum had recovered from injury by this time, consistent with the notion that the procerebrum is the storage site of odor-aversion memory, or deeply involved in the memory recall process.

Significance

Our findings are the first to demonstrate that a brain region responsible for the associative memory of an adult organism can spontaneously reconstitute itself, and can recover its function following injury.
