Consumers’ perspectives of Malaysian community pharmacists as health educators: a qualitative insight

Medical Devices-Related Counseling Practices Among Community Pharmacists: A Nationwide Cross-Sectional Study from Saudi Arabia

Objective

The current study was conducted to assess medical devices-related counseling practices among community pharmacists in Saudi Arabia.

Methodology

This was a cross-sectional study conducted among community pharmacists from Saudi Arabia using a convenience sampling technique. An online questionnaire based on Google forms was used to collect data. Descriptive and inferential analyses were conducted using SPSS statistics 22. Student t-test, one way ANOVA, and Pearson correlation statistics were used where applicable. Results with a p-value of <0.05 were considered statistically significant.

Results

One thousand and six community pharmacists responded to the survey. Males’ rating of their ability to operate medical devices was significantly higher than females (overall average score of 3.8 versus 3.5, p=0.033). As years of experience increased there were slight but significant increases in the overall scores on ability to operate medical devices (p=0.002) and confidence to counsel patients about the devices (p=0.032). Those who got a board certification used devices for self-treatment significantly more than their counterparts (on average 6.9 devices versus 5.2, p=0.003). Those who received clinical training reported higher rates of ability to use/operate devices (p=0.011), confidence to counsel patients on devices (p=0.001), and counseling practice (p=0.044) than those who did not receive clinical training.

Conclusion

The present study revealed good to very good self-reported medical devices-related counseling practices. There is a need for more future rigorous research to evaluate pharmacists' actual practice in this area. Pharmacy educators and CPD programs should pay attention to updating pharmacists’ knowledge and skills and improve their contribution to medical devices supportive services.

Is there a time and place for health education in chain pharmacies? Perspectives of Polish community pharmacists

Pharmaceutical practice has evolved significantly from the provision of drugs to a more patient-centred model. However, the ownership structure of pharmacies may impact the level of cognitive services provided by them. The discrepancy may be observed between pharmacists' opinions on how involved they should get and their actual involvement in health promotion and disease prevention. Given the growing market share of pharmacy chains in Europe, this study aimed to investigate the attitudes of pharmacists employed in them towards their role as health educators. It applies Ajzen's theory of planned behaviour to examine pharmacists' perspectives with the use of semi-structured in-depth interviews. A total of 10 semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted in May 2017 among Polish pharmacists employed in chains. Obtained results showed that respondents welcomed the possibility of providing health education, but simultaneously they seek physicians' and patients' acceptance for undertaking this task. Competency gaps and unfavourable working conditions may also decrease pharmacists' intention to serve as health educators. Including the role of a health educator to the scope of the pharmacists' practice requires a precise definition of their competencies and responsibilities together with additional training aimed to fill potential gaps in their qualifications. The pharmacists' image as a health educator should also be widely communicated to patients and other healthcare professionals.

Pharmacists' Preparedness to Patients Education at the Time of Pandemic-A Cross-Sectional Study with an Example of SARS-CoV-2 Outbreak in Poland

Although pharmacy employees’ involvement in patient education has great potential, the extent to which they actually provide cognitive services seems inadequate. Given the overburdening of the healthcare system and limited access to medical services due to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic outbreak, this study aimed to evaluate the preparedness of Polish pharmacy employees for patient education on the new threat. The study was conducted using the mystery shopper method. Two interviewers phoned 90 randomly chosen community pharmacies throughout Poland and presented some inquiries on the SARS-CoV-2. Pharmacists devoted more time to patients than pharmacy technicians (2:22 vs. 1:54), and the information they provided was significantly more comprehensive (p = 0.006). The majority of respondents provided an evidence-based recommendation on prevention, symptoms, and management of SARS-CoV-2; however, the scope of advice significantly varied. Community pharmacy staff often expressed their concern about the lack of time to address patients’ questions adequately. No statistically significant differences were found in recommendations provided by chain and non-chain pharmacy staff. Obtained results seem to confirm the possibility of involving pharmacists in public health activities during a pandemic. Nevertheless, providing proper working conditions and adequate just-in-time learning solutions is crucial.
