Abstract
Polysaccharide-based edible films have been widely developed as food packaging materials in response to the rising environmental concerns caused by the extensive use of plastic packaging. In recent years, the integration of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and chitosan (CS) for a binary edible film has received considerable interest because this binary edible film can retain the advantages of both constituents (e.g., the great oxygen barrier ability of CMC and moderate antimicrobial activity of CS) while mitigating their respective disadvantages (e.g., the low water resistance of CMC and poor mechanical strength of CS). This review aims to present the latest advancements in CMC-CS edible films. The preparation methods and properties of CMC-CS edible films are comprehensively introduced. Potential additives and technologies utilized to enhance the properties are discussed. The applications of CMC-CS edible films on food products are summarized. Literature shows that the current preparation methods for CMC-CS edible film are solvent-casting (main) and thermo-mechanical methods. The CMC-CS binary films have superior properties compared to films made from a single constituent. Moreover, some properties, such as physical strength, antibacterial ability, and antioxidant activity, can be greatly enhanced via the incorporation of some bioactive substances (e.g. essential oils and nanomaterials). To date, several applications of CMC-CS edible films in vegetables, fruits, dry foods, dairy products, and meats have been studied. Overall, CMC-CS edible films are highly promising as food packaging materials.

Abstract
Reticular chemistry, exemplified by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), has proven invaluable in creating porous materials with finely tuned structures to address critical global energy and environmental challenges. In this context, the need for efficient carbon dioxide (CO2) capture and utilization has taken center stage. One promising approach involves the integration of MOFs into polymer matrix to develop mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). In this work, cerium-based MOFs (Ce-MOF) were selected due to their robust CO2 capture capabilities, while chitosan (CS) was chosen as the polymer matrix due to its reasonably good selectivity and balanced CO2 permeance for the development of MMMs for CO2/N2 (20/80 vol%) separation. A comprehensive suite of analytical techniques, including FTIR, XRD, FESEM, XPS, TGA, EDX, FETEM, and BET, was applied for precise characterization of both the MOF and MMMs. Various operational parameters, such as Ce-MOF content and temperature, were systematically explored to investigate the CO2 capture efficiency of the synthesized MMMs. The results revealed that the optimized Ce-MOF-embedded CS MMMs consistently outperformed the bare CS membranes.

Abstract
In this study, we fabricated a novel biodegradable functional film using natural polysaccharides by adding jujube seed powder as an active ingredient. Scanning electron microscopy analysis showed agglomerate formation in the film with increasing concentration of seed powder. Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy study demonstrated an electrostatic interaction between pectin and chitosan. The water solubility and swelling degree significantly decreased from 55.5 to 47.7 % and 66.0 to 41.9 %, respectively, depicting the film's water resistance properties. Higher opacity and lower transmittance value of the film indicated its protective effect towards light-induced oxidation of food. It was observed that the fabricated active film biodegraded to 82.33 % in 6 days. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of 98.02 % was observed for the functional film. The film showed antifungal activity against B. cinerea and P. chrysogenum. The highest zone of inhibition was obtained against food spoiling bacteria B. subtilis followed by S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and E. coli. Genotoxicity studies with the fabricated film showed a mitotic index of 8 % compared to 3 % in the control film. We used the fabricated film to preserve grapefruits, and the result showed that it could preserve grapes for ten days with an increase in antioxidant activity and polyphenolic content.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study developed an intelligent, pH-sensitive and amine-responsive colorimetric label based on chitosan, whey protein and thymol blue by controlling the pH value of the film-forming solution. The obtained label was used to monitor shrimp freshness in real time. The results of this study offer a new approach for developing highly intelligent biogenic labels for freshness monitoring during seafood preservation and processing. RESULTS The pH 2.0 chitosan-whey protein-thymol blue (CWT-pH 2.0) label exhibited remarkable properties, including the highest tensile strength (5.90 MPa), excellent thermal stability, low water solubility (27.80%) and highly sensitive color responsiveness. The characterization techniques of scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed the effective immobilization of thymol blue within the film-forming matrix through hydrogen bonding. Furthermore, the CWT-pH 2.0 label demonstrated visible color changes in the presence of volatile ammonia concentrations ranging from 25 to 25 000 ppm. Consequently, the label successfully facilitated real-time monitoring of shrimp freshness during storage at 4 °C. Importantly, the release rate of thymol blue from the label in food simulants was minimal, measuring only 2.53%. CONCLUSION The CWT-pH 2.0 label exhibits significant potential as a highly intelligent biogenic label for freshness monitoring in seafood preservation and processing. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Rubbery polymeric membranes, containing amine carriers, have received much attention in CO2 separation because of their easy fabrication, low cost, and excellent separation performance. The present study focuses on the versatile aspects of covalent conjugation of L-tyrosine (Tyr) onto the high molecular weight chitosan (CS) accomplished by using carbodiimide as a coupling agent for CO2/N2 separation. The fabricated membrane was subjected to FTIR, XRD, TGA, AFM, FESEM, and moisture retention tests to examine the thermal and physicochemical properties. The defect-free dense layer of tyrosine-conjugated-chitosan, with active layer thickness within the range of ~600 nm, was cast and employed for mixed gas (CO2/N2) separation study in the temperature range of 25-115 °C in both dry and swollen conditions and compared to that of a neat CS membrane. An enhancement in the thermal stability and amorphousness was displayed by TGA and XRD spectra, respectively, for the prepared membranes. The fabricated membrane showed reasonably good CO2 permeance of around 103 GPU and CO2/N2 selectivity of 32 by maintaining a sweep/feed moisture flow rate of 0.05/0.03 mL/min, respectively, an operating temperature of 85 °C, and a feed pressure of 32 psi. The composite membrane demonstrated high permeance because of the chemical grafting compared to the bare chitosan. Additionally, the excellent moisture retention capacity of the fabricated membrane accelerates high CO2 uptake by amine carriers, owing to the reversible zwitterion reaction. All the features make this membrane a potential membrane material for CO2 capture.
