Exploration of the Potential Application of Banana Peel for Its Effective Valorization: A Review

The production of banana peel by the food-processing industry is substantial and the disposal of this waste material has become a matter of concern. However, recent studies have demonstrated that banana peel is a rich source of biologically active compounds that can be transformed into valuable products. This review aims to explore the potential of converting banana peel into valuable products and provides a comprehensive analysis of the physical and chemical composition of banana peel. Additionally, the utilization of banana peel as a substrate to produce animal feed, bio fertilizer, dietary fibers, renewable energy, industrial enzymes, and nanomaterials has been extensively studied. According to the researches that has been done so far, it is clear that banana peel has a broad range of applications and its effective utilization through biorefinery strategies can maximize its economic benefits. Based on previous studies, A plan for feasibility of a banana peel biorefinery has been put up which suggest its potential as a valuable source of renewable energy and high-value products. The utilization of banana peel through biorefinery strategies can provide a sustainable solution for waste management and contribute to the development of a circular economy.

Isolation, Purification and Characterization of Proteins in “Señorita” Banana (Musa acuminata (AAA) ‘Señorita’) Pulp with Bioactive Peptides Exhibiting Antihypertensive and Antioxidant Activities

Banana is one of the most important crops, providing multiple benefits. Although it has been widely studied for its health benefits, little information can be found about its proteins. This study determined the antihypertensive and antioxidant activities of the crude, purified, and hydrolyzed protein extracts from ‘Señorita’ banana pulp. Crude proteins were extracted using Tris-HCl buffer and purified through ammonium sulfate precipitation, dialysis, and gel filtration chromatography. The protein content of the crude, partially purified, and purified extracts were found to be 167.32, 120.45, and 28.51 μg·mL−1, respectively, with major protein having an approximate molecular weight of 15 kDa. These extracts were then subjected to enzymatic hydrolysis for release of bioactive peptides prior to ACE inhibitory and antioxidant activities determination. Among these samples, the undigested crude extract had the highest ACE inhibitory activity (85.20%). There was also an observable increase in ACE inhibition of the digested samples with increased digestion time. Meanwhile, the 3-h and 4-h crude digests had the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity with 30.82% and 34.74%, respectively. These were not significantly different from the activity of the standard, ascorbic acid. A general decrease in DPPH radical scavenging activity of the samples was observed with increased digestion time. These observations were coherent with the in silico analysis of the putative major protein, lectin, which showed that its enzymatic hydrolysis releases ACE inhibitor and antioxidant peptides.

Whole unripe plantain (Musa paradisiaca L.) as raw material for bioethanol production

BACKGROUND

The use of byproducts such as rejected plantain with final disposition problems and conversion processes with 'green' technologies are important research topics. Bioethanol production from crops with a high content of fermentable sugars is an alternative to that from traditional crops (corn and sugar cane). The aim of this work was to study the use of whole (peel and pulp) unripe plantain (WP) for bioethanol production.

RESULTS

Lab-scale liquefaction and saccharification of both materials released mainly three carbohydrates, glucose (9.02 mg g^-1 ), maltose (0.45 mg g^-1 ) and xylose (0.25 mg g^-1 ). The WP saccharification required the use of pectinase and cellulase because of the high amounts of pectin and cellulose associated with the peel. Fermentation for 11 h produced similar ethanol concentration for both samples, but at the end of fermentation (32 h), the ethanol production was higher in the WP (58.6 mL L^-1 ) compared with the plantain pulp (PP) (45.5 mL L^-1 ). The theoretical ethanol yield was lower with WP (67%) than with PP (90%).

CONCLUSION

Proteomics in commercial crops: An overview

Proteomics is a rapidly growing area of biological research that is positively affecting plant science. Recent advances in proteomic technology, such as mass spectrometry, can now identify a broad range of proteins and monitor their modulation during plant growth and development, as well as during responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. In this review, we highlight recent proteomic studies of commercial crops and discuss the advances in understanding of the proteomes of these crops. We anticipate that proteomic-based research will continue to expand and contribute to crop improvement.

SIGNIFICANCE

Plant proteomics study is a rapidly growing area of biological research that is positively impacting plant science. With the recent advances in new technologies, proteomics not only allows us to comprehensively analyses crop proteins, but also help us to understand the functions of the genes. In this review, we highlighted recent proteomic studies in commercial crops and updated the advances in our understanding of the proteomes of these crops. We believe that proteomic-based research will continue to grow and contribute to the improvement of crops.

Valorization of banana peel: a biorefinery approach

Banana peel (BP) is an agrowaste produced in large volumes annually, especially by food-processing industries; however, its disposal is of significant concern. However, recent research suggests that BP is a valuable source of bioactive compounds, which can be converted into value-added products. This article reviews the conversion process of value-added products from BP and provides an outline on the chemical composition of BP and its possible applications. In addition, we also discuss the utilization of BP as a substrate to produce animal feed, biofertilizer, dietary fibers, clean energy, industrial enzymes, as well as its use in the synthesis of nanomaterials. Based on the research conducted so far, it is obvious that BP has a wide variety of applications, and thus, developing a biorefinery approach to adequately utilize BP will help realize its economic benefits to the fullest. Transgenic soybeans and soybean protein analysis: an overview

To meet the increasing global demand for soybeans for food and feed consumption, new high-yield varieties with improved quality traits are needed. To ensure the safety of the crop, it is important to determine the variation in seed proteins along with unintended changes that may occur in the crop as a result various stress stimuli, breeding, and genetic modification. Understanding the variation of seed proteins in the wild and cultivated soybean cultivars is useful for determining unintended protein expression in new varieties of soybeans. Proteomic technology is useful to analyze protein variation due to various stimuli. This short review discusses transgenic soybeans, different soybean proteins, and the approaches used for protein analysis. The characterization of soybean protein will be useful for researchers, nutrition professionals, and regulatory agencies dealing with soy-derived food products.
