Abstract
Low molecular-mass aliphatic carboxylic acids are critically important for intermediate metabolism and may serve as important biomarkers for metabolic homeostasis. Here in, we focused on multiplexed method development of aliphatic carboxylic analytes, including methylsuccinic acid (MSA), ethylmalonic acid (EMA), and glutaric acid (GA). Also assessed was their utility in a population's health as well as metabolic disease screening in both plasma and urine matrices. MSA, EMA, and GA are constitutional isomers of dicarboxylic acid with high polarity and poor ionization efficiency, resulting in such challenges as poor signal intensity and retention, particularly in reversed-phase liquid chromatography with electrospray mass spectrometry (RP-LC-ESI-MS/MS). Derivatization using n-butanol was performed in the sample preparation to enhance the signal intensity accompanied with a positive charge from ionization in complicated biomatrices as well as to improve the separation of these isomers with optimal retention. Fit-for-purpose method validation results demonstrated quantitative ranges for MSA/EMA/GA from 5/10/20 ng/mL to 400 ng/mL in plasma analysis, and 100/200/100 ng/mL to 5000/10000/5000 ng/mL in urine analysis. This validated method demonstrates future utility when exploring population health analysis and biomarker development in metabolic diseases.

Abstract
In situ missions of exploration require analytical methods that are capable of detecting a wide range of molecular targets in complex matrices without a priori assumptions of sample composition. Furthermore, these methods should minimize the number of reagents needed and any sample preparation steps. We have developed a method for the detection of metabolically relevant inorganic and organic anions that is suitable for implementation on in situ spaceflight missions. Using 55 mM acetic acid, 50 mM triethylamine, and 5% glycerol, more than 21 relevant anions are separated in less than 20 min. The method is robust to sample ionic strength, tolerating high concentrations of background salts (up to 900 mM NaCl and 300 mM MgSO4 ). This is an important feature for future missions to ocean worlds. The method was validated using a culture of Escherichia coli and with high salinity natural samples collected from Mono Lake, California.

Abstract
The presence of five different pharmaceuticals, consisting of four anti-inflammatory and one antiepileptic drug, was determined in influent and effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) near the city of Jyväskylä, Finland, and in the receiving water, northern Lake Päijänne. In addition, samples of sedimented particles were collected among water samples from five locations near the discharge point of the treated wastewater. The solid phase extracts (SPEs) of water samples were analyzed by liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) in the multiple reaction monitoring mode. The studied pharmaceuticals were detected from influent, effluent, and lake water but also in the sedimented particles. The concentrations of carbamazepine, diclofenac, ibuprofen, ketoprofen, and naproxen in Lake Päijänne ranged from 1 to 21 ng L(-1), 4 to 209 ng L(-1), 5 to 836 ng L(-1), 9 to 952 ng L(-1), and 2 to 129 ng L(-1), respectively. The concentrations of ketoprofen in sedimented particles ranged from 79 to 135 μg g(-1) while only trace amounts of other selected pharmaceuticals were detected. The results indicate that the concentrations of pharmaceuticals are affected by the biological and chemical reactions occurring in the wastewater treatment processes but also by the UV light in the photic layer of Lake Päijänne. It can be concluded that considerable amount of selected pharmaceuticals are present in the influent and effluent of municipal WWTP but also in the water phase and sedimented particles of northern Lake Päijänne.

Abstract
Solubility of carbamazepine co-crystal produced from cooling co-crystallization process with succinic acid as a co-crystal former is investigated in this study. Two techniques were used to determine the solubility of the co-crystal which are gravimetry and HPLC. The solubility experiments in ethanol solvent systems were conducted at 6 different temperatures (25, 30, 35, 40, 45 and 50 °C) while for succinic acid ethanolic solution system were conducted at 5 different concentration ratios. Both of the systems are equilibrated for 72 hours. Result from the experiments has shown that the solubility of co-crystal is temperature dependent. As the temperature increases, the solubility of co-crystal also increases; this agrees with the Second Law of Thermodynamic which states that heat facilitates the dissolution process by providing more energy to the system.

Abstract
Myeloperoxidase-derived HOCl reacts with the vinyl ether bond of plasmalogens yielding α-chlorofatty aldehydes. These chlorinated aldehydes can be purified using thin-layer chromatography, which is essential for subsequent analysis of extracts from some tissues such as myocardium. The α-chlorofatty aldehyde 2-chlorohexadecanal (2-ClHDA) is quantified after conversion to its pentafluorobenzyl oxime derivative using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and negative-ion chemical ionization detection. 2-ClHDA accumulates in activated human neutrophils and monocytes, as well as in atherosclerotic lesions and infarcted myocardium. Metabolites of 2-ClHDA have also been identified, including the oxidation product, 2-chlorohexadecanoic acid (2-ClHA), and the reduction product, 2-chlorohexadecanol. 2-ClHA can be quantified using LC-MS with selected reaction monitoring (SRM) detection. 2-ClHA can be ω-oxidized by hepatocytes and subsequently β-oxidized from the ω-end, leading to the production of the dicarboxylic acid, 2-chloroadipic acid. This dicarboxylic acid is excreted in the urine and can also be quantified using LC-MS methods with SRM detection. Quantitative analyses of these novel chlorinated lipids are essential to identify the role of these lipids in leukocyte-mediated injury and disease.

Abstract
Myeloperoxidase-derived HOCl targets tissue- and lipoprotein-associated plasmalogens to generate α-chlorinated fatty aldehydes, including 2-chlorohexadecanal. Under physiological conditions, 2-chlorohexadecanal is oxidized to 2-chlorohexadecanoic acid (2-ClHA). This study demonstrates the catabolism of 2-ClHA by ω-oxidation and subsequent β-oxidation from the ω-end. Mass spectrometric analyses revealed that 2-ClHA is ω-oxidized in the presence of liver microsomes with initial ω-hydroxylation of 2-ClHA. Subsequent oxidation steps were examined in a human hepatocellular cell line (HepG2). Three different α-chlorinated dicarboxylic acids, 2-chlorohexadecane-(1,16)-dioic acid, 2-chlorotetradecane-(1,14)-dioic acid, and 2-chloroadipic acid (2-ClAdA), were identified. Levels of 2-chlorohexadecane-(1,16)-dioic acid, 2-chlorotetradecane-(1,14)-dioic acid, and 2-ClAdA produced by HepG2 cells were dependent on the concentration of 2-ClHA and the incubation time. Synthetic stable isotope-labeled 2-ClHA was used to demonstrate a precursor-product relationship between 2-ClHA and the α-chlorinated dicarboxylic acids. We also report the identification of endogenous 2-ClAdA in human and rat urine and elevations in stable isotope-labeled urinary 2-ClAdA in rats subjected to intraperitoneal administration of stable isotope-labeled 2-ClHA. Furthermore, urinary 2-ClAdA and plasma 2-ClHA levels are increased in LPS-treated rats. Taken together, these data show that 2-ClHA is ω-oxidized to generate α-chlorinated dicarboxylic acids, which include α-chloroadipic acid that is excreted in the urine.

Abstract
This article describes a fast and simple methodology for the extraction and determination of organic acids in tissues and root exudates of maize, lupin, and chickpea by LC/MS/MS. Its main advantage is that it does not require sample prepurification before HPLC analysis or sample derivatization to improve sensibility. The results obtained showed good precision and accuracy, a recovery close to 100%, and no significant matrix effect. Moreover, the sensibility of the method is in general better than that of previously described methodologies, with detection limits between 15 and 900 pg injected.

Abstract
For environmental analytical purposes, an anion-exchange chromatography-electrospray ionization MS method was developed enabling the identification and quantification of 18 aliphatic (poly)hydroxy (poly)carboxylic acids including sugar and uronic acids. The initially incomplete separation could be partially improved for specific analyte combinations adding borate, the zwitter ionic MES, or an alkylglycoside to the NaOH gradient supplied with the Dionex IonPac AS-11 HC column. Despite the incomplete separation, reproducible and sensitive identification and quantification is possible with MS detection in the selected ion-monitoring mode. Applying an internal standard for the compensation of the sensitivity drift of the detector, linear calibration functions were calculated for all analytes. Limits of detection spanned between 18 and 71 microgL(-1) which could be further improved for some more hydrophobic analytes by post-column addition of MeOH.

Abstract
The versatile characterization of organic material and especially of the significant aliphatic hydroxy acids in black liquor is of great importance, for example, in monitoring the progress of the kraft pulping process. This paper describes a simple high-performance liquid chromatographic separation method with atmospheric-pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry (HPLC-APCI-MS) which was developed for the rapid quantitative analysis of these acids, mainly formed as the alkaline degradation products of feedstock carbohydrates. The fraction of carbohydrate degradation products is mainly composed of hydroxy monocarboxylic and volatile acids (formic and acetic acids) along with lesser amounts of various dicarboxylic acids. This method was thoroughly tested and validated to determine the most abundant nonvolatile low-molecular-mass aliphatic mono- and dicarboxylic acids present in softwood (pine and spruce) and hardwood (birch and aspen) kraft black liquors. This straightforward technique provides, compared to the conventional gas chromatographic methods, some important advantages such as simple sample preparation and a faster analysis time, thus enabling almost real-time monitoring of these acids.
