Selective Removal of Hemoglobin from Blood Using Hierarchical Copper Shells Anchored to Magnetic Nanoparticles

Hierarchical copper shells anchored on magnetic nanoparticles were designed and fabricated to selectively deplete hemoglobin from human blood by immobilized metal affinity chromatography. Briefly, CoFe₂O₄ nanoparticles coated with polyacrylic acid were first synthesized by a one-pot solvothermal method. Hierarchical copper shells were then deposited by immobilizing Cu²⁺ on nanoparticles and subsequently by reducing between the solid CoFe₂O₄@COOH and copper solution with NaBH₄. The resulting nanoparticles were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and vibrating sample magnetometry. The particles were also tested against purified bovine hemoglobin over a range of pH, contact time, and initial protein concentration. Hemoglobin adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and reached equilibrium in 90 min. Isothermal data also fit the Langmuir model well, with calculated maximum adsorption capacity 666 mg g⁻¹. Due to the high density of Cu²⁺ on the shell, the nanoparticles efficiently and selectively deplete hemoglobin from human blood. Taken together, the results demonstrate that the particles with hierarchical copper shells effectively remove abundant, histidine-rich proteins, such as hemoglobin from human blood, and thereby minimize interference in diagnostic and other assays.

Molecular imprinting science and technology: a survey of the literature for the years 2004-2011

Herein, we present a survey of the literature covering the development of molecular imprinting science and technology over the years 2004-2011. In total, 3779 references to the original papers, reviews, edited volumes and monographs from this period are included, along with recently identified uncited materials from prior to 2004, which were omitted in the first instalment of this series covering the years 1930-2003. In the presentation of the assembled references, a section presenting reviews and monographs covering the area is followed by sections describing fundamental aspects of molecular imprinting including the development of novel polymer formats. Thereafter, literature describing efforts to apply these polymeric materials to a range of application areas is presented. Current trends and areas of rapid development are discussed.

Recent advances in capillary electrochromatography using molecularly imprinted polymers

There is an increased and continuous need for developing new methods for the separation and quantification of an increasing number of analytes in the environmental, pharmaceutical, pharmacological, and toxicological sciences. CEC is still withholding its popularity, representing a viable alternative to the more conventional techniques (HPLC, GC) due to the numerous advantages, such as, low sample/reagent volumes, high separation efficiencies, hybrid separation principle, etc. One particular promising direction in CEC is the use of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) as stationary phases. They are usually immobilized in the capillary column as a continuous polymeric monolith or as a thin polymer coating attached to the capillary's inner wall. Another emerging trend is the use of MIPs in the form of nanoparticles as a pseudostationary phase. This review discusses the recent developments (2011-2013) in finding the optimal polymerization mixture and the suitable MIP format that should be employed in CEC separations. The most important applications of MIPs in CEC technique are also highlighted.
