Polyaniline-co-polyindole functionalized magnetic porous carbon derived from MIL-53(Fe) for separation/enrichment of nitrophenols pollutants before determination with high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection

Herein, a novel polyaniline-co-polyindole functionalized magnetic porous carbon derived from MIL-53(Fe) was prepared and employed as an excellent nano-adsorbent to preconcentrate trace amounts of nitro-phenols in water and wastewater samples. Briefly, magnetic MIL-53(Fe) was synthesized by the addition of magnetite nanoparticles, terephthalic acid, and FeCl3 to the reaction medium. The magnetic MIL-53(Fe) was pyrolyzed under nitrogen protection to obtain a magnetic porous carbon nanocomposite, and finally, the nanomaterial was functionalized with polyaniline-co-polyindole via oxidation polymerization. The obtained nano-adsorbent was characterized via X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry, and transmission and scanning electron microscopies. After that, the fabricated nano-material was utilized as an excellent nano-adsorbent for the preconcentration of trace nitro-phenols (2-nitrophenol, 4-nitrophenol, and 2,4-dinitrophenol) in environmental water, and wastewater samples. The detection limits were obtained from 0.1 to 0.15 μg/L after performing the optimization process. The new method was in the range of 0.4-300 μg/L. The proposed method exhibited a good precision from 3.2% to 9.6% for within-day assay, and 5.2%-13.2% for between-day assay at three concentration levels (1, 50, and 250 μg/L). Eventually, this method was utilized to preconcentrate/determine the target analytes in three water, and wastewater samples, satisfactory (relative standard deviations, 5.4%-9.3%; relative recovery, 88%-109%).

Development of a Solid-Phase Extraction Method Based on Biocompatible Starch Polyurethane Polymers for GC-MS Analysis of Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in Ambient Water Samples

A new solid-phase extraction (SPE) method for the extraction, enrichment, and analysis of eight polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) in water was developed. The current approach involves using a cross-linked starch-based polymer as an extraction adsorbent and determining the PBDE analytes of interest using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry in negative chemical ionization mode (GC-NCI-MS). The starch-based polymer was synthesized by the reaction of soluble starch with 4,4'-methylene-bis-phenyldiisocyanate as a cross-linking agent in dry dimethylformamide. Various parameters impacting extraction efficiencies, such as adsorbent quantity, sample volumes, elution solvents and volumes, and methanol content, were carefully optimized. The 500 mg of starch-based polymer as an adsorbent used to extract 1000 mL of spiked water, presented high extraction recoveries of eight PBDEs. The linearity of the extraction process was investigated in the range of 1-200 ng L-1 for BDE-28, 47, 99, 100, and 5-200 ng L-1 for BDE-153, 154, 183, and 209, with coefficients of determination (r2) exceeding 0.990 for all PBDEs. The limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.06 to 1.42 ng L-1 (S/N = 3) and the relative standard deviation values (RSD) were between 3.6 and 9.5 percent (n = 5) under optimum conditions. The method was successfully used to analyze river and lake water samples, where it exhibited acceptable recovery values of 71.3 to 104.2%. Considering the excellent analytical performance and comparative cost advantage, we recommend the developed starch-based SPE method for routine extraction and analysis of PBDEs in water media.

Olefin Cross Metathesis as a Versatile Method for the Facile Functionalization of Porous Polymers

Olefin cross metathesis has been employed for the first time for the postpolymerization chemical modification of porous polymers. High quality microspheres of poly(divinylbenzene) were synthesized by the precipitation polymerization of divinylbenzene-55 in porogenic solvents, and the olefin cross metathesis reactions of the pendent (polymer-bound) vinyl groups not consumed by polymerization were performed with diverse coupling partners in dichloromethane using the Grubbs 2 catalyst, leading to microspheres decorated with a wide range of functional groups.
