Abstract
Acanthamoeba spp. is the etiological agent of amoebic keratitis. In this study, the effect of taurine in physiological concentrations in tears (195 μM) on trophozoites of Acanthamoeba castellanii through the ex vivo amoebic keratitis model was evaluated. Trophozoites were coincubated with the Syrian golden hamster cornea (Mesocricetus auratus) for 3 and 6 h. Group 1: Control (-). Corneas coincubated with amoebic culture medium and taurine. Group 2: Control (+). Corneas coincubated with trophozoites without taurine. Group 3: Corneas coincubated with taurine 15 min before adding trophozoites. Group 4: Trophozoites coincubated 15 min with taurine before placing them on the cornea. Group 5: Corneas coincubated for 15 min with trophozoites; subsequently, taurine was added. Results are similar for both times, as evaluated by scanning electron microscopy. As expected, in the corneas of Group 1, no alterations were observed in the corneal epithelium. In the corneas of Group 2, few adhered trophozoites were observed on the corneal surface initiating migrations through cell junctions as previously described; however, in corneas of Groups 3, 4 and 5, abundant trophozoites were observed, penetrating through different corneal cell areas, emitting food cups and destabilizing corneal surface in areas far from cell junctions. Significant differences were confirmed in trophozoites adherence coincubated with taurine (p < 0.05). Taurine does not prevent the adhesion and invasion of the amoebae, nor does it favor its detachment once these have adhered to the cornea, suggesting that taurine in the physiological concentrations found in tears stimulates pathogenic mechanisms of A. castellanii.

Abstract
In recent years, advances in sensitive analytical techniques have encouraged the analysis of various compounds in biological fluids. While blood serum, blood plasma and urine still remain the golden standards in clinical, toxicological and forensic science, analyses of other body fluids, such as breast milk, exhaled breath condensate, sweat, saliva, amniotic fluid, cerebrospinal fluid, or capillary blood in form of dried blood spots are becoming more popular. This review article focuses on capillary electrophoresis and microchip electrophoresis of small ions and molecules (e.g. inorganic cations/anions, basic/acidic drugs, small acids/bases, amino acids, peptides and other low molecular weight analytes) in various less conventional human body fluids and hopes to stimulate further interest in the field.

Abstract
The rapid and accurate determination of the level of taurine biomarker in various tissues and body fluids can be of great interest in the early diagnosis of several important pathologies and diseases. In the present study, an innovative electrochemical interface for quantitation of taurine based on ternary signal amplification strategy was fabricated. In this work, silver nanoparticles were electrodeposited onto green and biocompatible nanocomposite containing α-cyclodextrin as conductive matrix. Therefore, a double layer film based on α-cyclodextrin and silver nanoparticles was exploited to develop a highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for detection of taurine. Fully electrochemical methodology was used to prepare a transducer on a glassy carbon electrode which provided a high surface area towards sensitive detection of taurine biomarker. The surface morphology of electrode surface was characterized by high-resolution field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). The proposed sensing platform provides a simple tool for taurine detection. The calibration curve for taurine concentration was linear in 0.7 nM to 0.1 mM with low limit of quantification of 0.7 nM. The practical analytical utility of the modified electrode was illustrated by determination of taurine in unprocessed human plasma samples with recovery of 90.8% to 104%.

Abstract
CE and microchip CE (ME) are powerful tools for the analysis of a number of different analytes and have been applied to a variety of clinical fields and human samples. This review will present an overview of the most recent applications of these techniques to different areas of clinical medicine during the period of 2014 to mid-2017. CE and ME have been applied to clinical chemistry, drug detection and monitoring, hematology, infectious diseases, oncology, endocrinology, neonatology, nephrology, and genetic screening. Samples examined range from serum, plasma, and urine to lest utilized materials such as tears, cerebral spinal fluid, sweat, saliva, condensed breath, single cells, and biopsy tissue. Examples of clinical applications will be given along with the various detection systems employed.

Abstract
In the tenth edition of this article focused on recent advances in amino acid analysis using capillary electrophoresis, we describe the most important research articles published on this topic during the period from June 2015 to May 2017. This article follows the format of the previous articles published in Electrophoresis. The new developments in amino acid analysis with CE mainly describe improvements in CE associated with mass spectrometry. Focusing on applications, we mostly describe clinical works, although metabolomics studies are also very important. Finally, works focusing on amino acids in food and agricultural applications are also described.

Abstract
Fast and sensitive monitoring of drug-induced liver and kidney injury in early stage is beneficial. An ultrafast liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry assay was developed and validated to simultaneously determine ten endogenous biomarkers in serum and urine, including hippuric acid, phenylacetylglycine, 5-oxoproline, cholic acid, taurine, indoleacetic acid, 3-indoxyl sulfate, guanidinosuccinic acid, guanidinoacetic acid and uric acid. A CAPCELL CORE PC column (2.1 × 150 mm, 2.7 μm) was adopted for analytes separation. Gradient elution was performed with acetonitrile and water containing 5 mM ammonium acetate. Simple protein precipitation was applied in sample preparation. Good linearities were achieved with all the regression coefficients above 0.9911. Accuracy was 2.9-14.2% in serum and 4.1-14.6% in urine. The mean recovery was above 70% with acceptable matrix effects. The method was applied to monitor injury induced by Euphorbiae pekinensis Radix with a subacute rats model. All the biomarkers showed obvious concentration changes during the injury period. Furthermore, several biomarkers showed significant changes in earlier stage when compared with the current clinical serum bio-parameters. The method might be helpful for early diagnosis of drug induced liver and kidney injury in clinical after tested on more drugs.
