Abstract
Peroxy radicals (RO2) are key reactive intermediates in atmospheric oxidation processes and yet their chemistry is not fully unraveled. Little is known about their structures and the structures of the dimeric products (ROOR) in the self-reaction of small RO2, which are among the most abundant RO2 in the atmosphere. The product branching ratios of ROOR and their atmospheric roles are still in controversy. Here, the self-reaction of propyl peroxy radicals (C3H7O2), a typical small RO2 radical in the atmosphere, has been studied using synchrotron radiation vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry. Both radical (C3H7O) and closed-shell molecular (C3H6O, C3H7OH, C3H7OOC3H7) products in the self-reaction are observed in photoionization mass spectra and their elusive isomers are definitely identified in mass-selected photoionization spectra. Three isomers of the C3H7OOC3H7 dimeric products, R1OOR1, R1OOR2, and R2OOR2 (R1 and R2 represent 1-C3H7 and 2-C3H7, respectively), as well as their complex structures have been determined for the first time. Kinetic experiments are performed and compared with chemical simulations to reveal the sources of specific products. The branching ratio of the C3H7OOC3H7 dimeric channel is measured at 10 ± 5%. This work demonstrates that the dimeric product formation in the self-reaction of small RO2 radicals is non-negligible and should provide valuable new insight into atmospheric modelling.

Abstract
The gas-phase reaction of trans-2-pentenal (T2P) with Cl atoms was studied at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. A rate coefficient of (2.56 ± 0.83) × 10-10 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 was obtained using the relative rate method and isoprene, cyclohexane and ethanol as reference compounds. The kinetic study was carried out using a 300-L Teflon bag simulation chamber (IMT Lille Douai-France) and a 16-L Pyrex cell (UCLM-Ciudad Real-Spain), both coupled to the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) technique. Gas-phase products and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation were studied at UCLM using a 16-L Pyrex cell and a 264-L quartz simulation chamber coupled to the FTIR and gas-chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) techniques. HCl, CO, and propanal were identified as products formed from the studied reaction and quantified by FTIR, the molar yield of the latter being (5.2 ± 0.2)%. Formic acid was identified as a secondary product and was quantified by FTIR with a yield of (6.2 ± 0.4)%. In addition, 2-chlorobutanal and 2-pentenoic acid were identified, but not quantified, by GC-MS as products. The SOA formation was investigated using a fast mobility particle sizer spectrometer. The observed SOA yields reached maximum values of around 7% at high particle mass concentrations. This work provides the first study of the formation of gaseous and particulate products for the reaction of Cl with T2P. A reaction mechanism is suggested to explain the formation of the observed gaseous products. The results are discussed in terms of structure-reactivity relationship, and the atmospheric implications derived from this study are commented as well.

Abstract
Rate constants of the reactions Cl + CH3OH → CH2OH + HCl ( k1) and Cl + CH3CHO → CH3C(O) + HCl ( k3) were measured at 100 Torr over the temperature range 230.3-297.1 K. Radical chemistry was initiated by pulsed laser photolysis of Cl2 in mixtures of CH3OH and CH3CHO in a flow reactor. Heterodyne near-IR wavelength modulation spectroscopy was used to directly detect HO2 produced from the subsequent reaction of CH2OH with O2 in real time to determine the rate of reaction of Cl with CH3OH. The rate of Cl + CH3CHO was measured relative to that of the Cl + CH3OH reaction. Secondary chemistry, including that of the adducts HO2·CH3OH and HO2·CH3CHO, was taken into account. The Arrhenius expressions were found to be k1( T) = 5.02-1.5+1.8 × 10-11 exp[(20 ± 88)/ T] cm3 molecule-1 s-1 and k3( T) = 6.38-2.0+2.4 × 10-11 exp[(56 ± 90)/ T] cm3 molecule-1 s-1 (2σ uncertainties). The average values of the rate constants over this temperature range were k1 = (5.45 ± 0.37) × 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 and k3 = (8.00 ± 1.27) × 10-11 cm3 molecule-1 s-1 (2σ uncertainties), consistent with current literature values.

Abstract
The self-reactions and cross reactions of the peroxy radicals C2H5O2 and HO2 were monitored using simultaneous independent spectroscopic probes to observe each radical species. Wavelength modulation (WM) near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy was used to detect HO2, and UV absorption monitored C2H5O2. The temperature dependences of these reactions were investigated over a range of interest to tropospheric chemistry, 221-296 K. The Arrhenius expression determined for the cross reaction, k2(T) = (6.01(-1.47)(+1.95)) x 10(-13) exp((638 +/- 73)/T) cm3 molecules(-1) s(-1) is in agreement with other work from the literature. The measurements of the HO2 self-reaction agreed with previous work from this lab and were not further refined. The C2H5O2 self-reaction is complicated by secondary production of HO2. This experiment performed the first direct measurement of the self-reaction rate constant, as well as the branching fraction to the radical channel, in part by measurement of the secondary HO2. The Arrhenius expression for the self-reaction rate constant is k3(T) = (1.29(-0.27)(+0.34)) x 10(-13)exp((-23 +/- 61)/T) cm3 molecules(-1) s(-1), and the branching fraction value is alpha = 0.28 +/- 0.06, independent of temperature. These values are in disagreement with previous measurements based on end product studies of the branching fraction. The results suggest that better characterization of the products from RO2 self-reactions are required.

Abstract
A newly constructed chamber/Fourier transform infrared system was used to determine the relative rate coefficient, k(i), for the gas-phase reaction of Cl atoms with 2-butanol (k(1)), 2-methyl-2-butanol (k(2)), 3-methyl-2-butanol (k(3)), 2,3-dimethyl-2-butanol (k(4)) and 2-pentanol (k(5)). Experiments were performed at (298 +/- 2) K, in 740 Torr total pressure of synthetic air, and the measured rate coefficients were, in cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) units (+/-2sigma): k(1)=(1.32 +/- 0.14) x 10(-10), k(2)=(7.0 +/- 2.2) x 10(-11), k(3)=(1.17 +/- 0.14) x 10(-10), k(4)=(1.03 +/- 0.17) x 10(-10) and k(5)=(2.18 +/- 0.36) x 10(-10), respectively. Also, all the above rate coefficients (except for 2-pentanol) were investigated as a function of temperature (267-384 K) by pulsed laser photolysis-resonance fluorescence (PLP-RF). The obtained kinetic data were used to derive the Arrhenius expressions: k(1)(T)=(6.16 +/- 0.58) x 10(-11)exp[(174 +/- 58)/T], k(2)(T)=(2.48 +/- 0.17) x 10(-11)exp[(328 +/- 42)/T], k(3)(T)=(6.29 +/- 0.57) x 10(-11)exp[(192 +/- 56)/T], and k(4)(T)=(4.80 +/- 0.43) x 10(-11)exp[(221 +/- 56)/T](in units of cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) and +/-sigma). Results and mechanism are discussed and compared with the reported reactivity with OH radicals. Some atmospheric implications derived from this study are also reported.

Abstract
FTIR smog chamber techniques and ab initio calculations have been used to investigate the kinetics and mechanism of the reaction of Cl atoms with i-propanol in 700 Torr of N(2) at 296 K. The reaction is observed to proceed with a rate constant of k(1) = (8.28 +/- 0.97) x 10(-11) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1) and gives CH(3)C(OH)CH(3) and CH(3)CH(OH)CH(2) radicals in yields of 85 +/- 7 and 15 +/- 7%, respectively. Calculations indicate that abstraction of the secondary H can proceed through a lower energy pathway than the primary. Rapid decomposition of the chlorination product CH(3)CCl(OH)CH(3) complicates its direct detection, likely due to heterogeneous chemistry. IR spectra for the chlorides CH(3)CCl(OH)CH(3) and CH(3)CH(OH)CH(2)Cl were inferred experimentally and assignments confirmed via comparison with ab initio computed spectra.

Abstract
The reactions of Cl with a series of linear alcohols: methanol (k1), ethanol (k2), 1-propanol (k3), 1-butanol (k4), and 1-pentanol (k5) were investigated as a function of temperature in the range of 264-382 K by laser photolysis-resonance fluorescence. The obtained kinetic data were used to derive the following Arrhenius expressions: k1=(3.55+/-0.22)x10(-10) exp[-(559+/-40)T], k2=(5.25+/-0.52)x10(-11) exp[(190+/-68)T], k3=(2.63+/-0.21)x10(-11) exp[(525+/-51)T], k4=(3.12+/-0.31)x10(-11) exp[(548+/-65)T], and k5=(3.97+/-0.48)x10(-11) exp[(533+/-77)T] (in units of cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1)). To our knowledge, these are the first absolute kinetic data reported for 1-butanol and 1-pentanol and also the first kinetic study as a function of temperature for these two compounds. Results, mechanism, and tropospheric implications are discussed and compared with the reported reactivity with OH radicals. Moreover, a theoretical insight into the mechanisms of these reactions has also been pursued through ab initio Möller-Plesset second-order perturbation treatment calculations with 6-311G** basis sets. Optimized geometries and vibrational frequencies have been obtained for transition states and molecular complexes appearing along the different reaction pathways. Furthermore, molecular energies have been calculated at quadratic configuration interaction with single, double, and triple excitations level in order to get an estimation of the activation energies.

Abstract
The kinetics and mechanism of the reactions of Cl atoms and OH radicals with CH3CH2CHO were investigated at room temperature using two complementary techniques: flash photolysis/UV absorption and continuous photolysis/FTIR smog chamber. Reaction with Cl atoms proceeds predominantly by abstraction of the aldehydic hydrogen atom to form acyl radicals. FTIR measurements indicated that the acyl forming channel accounts for (88 +/- 5)%, while UV measurements indicated that the acyl forming channel accounts for (88 +/- 3)%. Relative rate methods were used to measure: k(Cl + CH3CH2CHO) = (1.20 +/- 0.23) x 10(-10); k(OH + CH3CH2CHO) = (1.82 +/- 0.23) x 10(-11); and k(Cl + CH3CH2C(O)Cl) = (1.64 +/- 0.22) x 10(-12) cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1). The UV spectrum of CH3CH2C(O)O2, rate constant for self-reaction, and rate constant for cross-reaction with CH3CH2O2 were determined: sigma(207 nm) = (6.71 +/- 0.19) x 10(-18) cm2 molecule(-1), k(CH3CH2C(O)O2 + CH3CH2C(O)O2) = (1.68 +/- 0.08) x 10(-11), and k(CH3CH2C(O)O2 + CH3CH2O2) = (1.20 +/- 0.06) x 10(-11) cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1), where quoted uncertainties only represent 2sigma statistical errors. The infrared spectrum of C2H5C(O)O2NO2 was recorded, and products of the Cl-initiated oxidation of CH3CH2CHO in the presence of O2 with, and without, NO(x) were identified. Results are discussed with respect to the atmospheric chemistry of propionaldehyde.

Abstract
The title reactions were studied using laser flash photolysis/laser-induced-fluorescence (FP-LIF) techniques. The two spin-orbit states, Cl*(2P(1/2)) and Cl(2P(3/2)), were detected using LIF at 135.2 and 134.7 nm, respectively. Measured reaction rate constants were as follows (units of cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1)): k(Cl(2P(3/2))+CH3OH) = (5.35 +/- 0.24) x 10(-11), k(Cl(2P(3/2))+C2H5OH) = (9.50 +/- 0.85) x 10(-11), k(Cl(2P(3/2))+n-C3H7OH) = (1.71 +/- 0.11) x 10(-10), and k(Cl(2P(3/2))+i-C3H7OH) = (9.11 +/- 0.60) x 10(-11). Measured rate constants for total removal of Cl*(2P(1/2)) in collisions with CH3OH, C2H5OH, n-C3H7OH, and i-C3H7OH were (1.95 +/- 0.13) x 10(-10), (2.48 +/- 0.18) x 10(-10), (3.13 +/- 0.18) x 10(-10), and (2.84 +/- 0.16) x 10(-10), respectively; quoted errors are two-standard deviations. Although spin-orbit excited Cl*(2P(1/2)) atoms have 2.52 kcal/mol more energy than Cl(2P(3/2)), the rates of chemical reaction of Cl*(2P(1/2)) with CH3OH, C2H5OH, n-C3H7OH, and i-C3H7OH are only 60-90% of the corresponding Cl(2P(3/2)) atom reactions. Under ambient conditions spin-orbit excited Cl* atoms are responsible for 0.5%, 0.5%, 0.4%, and 0.7% of the observed reactivity of thermalized Cl atoms toward CH3OH, C2H5OH, n-C3H7OH, and i-C3H7OH, respectively.

Abstract
Rotational state resolved center-of-mass angular scattering and kinetic energy release distributions have been determined for the HCl (v' = 0, j' = 0-6) products of the reaction of chlorine with n-butane using the photon-initiated reaction technique, coupled with velocity-map ion imaging. The angular and kinetic energy release distributions derived from the ion images are very similar to those obtained previously for the Cl plus ethane reaction. The angular distributions are found to shift from forward scattering to more isotropic scattering with increasing HCl rotational excitation. The kinetic energy release distributions indicate that around 30% of the available energy is channeled into internal excitation of the butyl radical products. The data analysis also suggests that H-atom abstraction takes place from both primary and secondary carbon atom sites, with the primary site producing rotationally cold, forward scattered HCl (v' = 0) products, and the secondary site yielding more isotropically scattered HCl (v' = 0) possessing higher rotational excitation. The mechanisms leading to these two product channels are discussed in the light of the present findings, and in comparison with studies of other Cl plus alkane reactions.

Abstract
Relative rate techniques were used to measure k(OH + HFE-7500) = (2.6+/-0.6) x 10(-14), k(Cl + HFE-7500) = (2.3+/-0.7) x 10(-12), k[Cl + n-C3F7CF(OC(O)H)CF(CF3)2] = (9.7+/-1.4) x 10(-15), and k[Cl + n-C3F7CF(OC(O)CH3)CF(CF3)2] < 6 x 10(-17) cm3 molecule(-1) s(-1) at 295 K [HFE-7500 = n-C3F7-CF(OC2H5)CF(CF3)2]. From the value of k(OH + HFE-7500) an estimate of 2.2 years for the atmospheric lifetime of HFE-7500 is obtained. Two competing loss mechanisms for n-C3F7-CF(OCHO.CH3)CF(CF3)2 radicals were identified in 700 Torr of N2/O2 diluent at 295 K; reaction with O2 and decomposition via C-C bond scission with kO2/k(decomp) = 0.013+/-0.006 Torr(-1). The Cl atom initiated oxidation of HFE-7500 in N2/O2 diluent gives n-C3F7CF(OC(O)CH3)CF(CF3)2 as the major product and n-C3F7CF(OC(O)H)CF(CF3)2 as a minor product. The atmospheric oxidation of HFE-7500 gives n-C3F7-CF(OC(O)CH3)CF(CF3)2 and n-C3F7CF(OC(O)H)CF(CF3)2 as oxidation products. The results are discussed with respect to the atmospheric chemistry and environmental impact of HFE-7500.
