Electrostatic Adsorption and Cytotoxity of Cellulose Nanocrystals with Loading Trace Metal Elements

Influence of Dietary Fibre and Protein Fractions on the Trace Element Bioaccessibility of Turnip Tops (Brassica rapa) Growing under Mediterranean Conditions

The objective of this work was to study the influence of three dietary fibre fractions (pectin, gum arabic and cellulose) and three protein fractions (casein, lactalbumin and soy) on the trace element bioaccessibility (Fe, Mn, Ni, Se and Zn) of turnip tops (B. rapa subsp. Rapa) growing under Mediterranean conditions. Then, it aimed to promote the use of this vegetable not only for direct fresh consumption but also as a main ingredient in the development of food mixtures. The results showed that soluble fibre fractions, such as pectin and gum arabic, can enhance the bioaccessibility of trace elements, such as Fe, Mn, Se and Zn. This effect was not proved for cellulose (an insoluble fibre fraction), in which, at best, no bioaccessibility effect was observed. Regarding the protein fractions, with the exception of Se, caseins and lactalbumin had a neutral effect on improving the trace element bioaccessibility. This did not hold true for soy protein, in which a considerable improvement in the bioaccessibility of Fe, Mn, Se and Zn was determined.

Visualized adsorption and enhanced photocatalytic removal of Cr6+ by carbon dots-incorporated fluorescent nanocellulose aerogels

In this study, carbon dots (CDs) and titanate nanofibers (TNs) were mixed with TEMPO-oxidized nanocellulose (TOCNC) to prepare fluorescent nanocellulose aerogels (FNAs) by a Schiff base reaction. The resulting FNA can detect the adsorption of Cr6+ through the fluorescence quenching in CDs and promote the removal of Cr6+ through the synergistic effect of CDs in photocatalysis. The optimized FNA has a maximum adsorption capacity of 543.38 mg/g, higher than most reported Cr6+ adsorbents. This excellent performance is due to the porous structure of the aerogel, which gives it a high specific surface area of 20.53 m2/g and provides abundant adsorption sites. Simultaneously, CDs can enhance the amino-induced Cr6+ adsorption, improve the photocatalytic performance of TNs, and expose more adsorption sites through electrostatic adsorption of amino-induced reduction products (Cr3+). This study explores the preparation of visualized nanosorbents with enhanced photocatalytic removal of Cr6+ and provides a new direction for nanoscale photocatalysts.

Degradation performance of methylene blue in metal nanoparticle modified 3D mesoporous wood microchannels

Wood has a rich three-dimensional pore structure and many bottom-up nanochannels. However, the structure of wood itself has limited ability to adsorb dyes, so the effective combination of the unique structure of wood and Pd NPs was studied to achieve efficient degradation of dyes. First, the three-dimensional structure of natural wood is optimized by combining the complex pore structure of wood with Pd NPs to improve the contact process between the dye and Pd NPs. Then, Pd (II) ion can be well reduced to Pd NPs by wood lignin. In addition, Pd NPs can be fixed by hydroxyl groups on cellulose in wood. The flow state inside Pd NPs/wood film and the contact area between catalyst and dye were discussed in detail by hydrodynamic simulation, which filled the gap. It provides reference for composite structure. When Pd NPs/wood membrane was used to treat methylene blue (MB), the degradation efficiency was up to 96.7%, which was 90% higher than that of natural wood. Its TOF value was 1.82 molMB molPd-1min-1, which was higher than that in the previous literature. Therefore, the novelty of this study is that the mechanism of catalytic degradation of MB by Pd nanoparticles/wood composites is reported for the first time. The internal flow mode and contact condition of the new material are understood, which has a good application prospect.

Biofibrous nanomaterials for extracting strategic metal ions from water

Strategic metals play an indispensable role in the related industries. Their extraction and recovery from water are of great significance due to both their rapid consumption and environmental concern. Biofibrous nanomaterials have shown great advantages in capturing metal ions from water. Recent progress in extraction of typical strategic metal ions such as noble metal ions, nuclear metal ions, and Li-battery related metal ions is reviewed here using typical biological nanofibrils like cellulose nanofibrils, chitin nanofibrils, and protein nanofibrils, as well as their assembly forms like fibers, aerogels/hydrogels, and membranes. An overview of advances in material design and preparation, extraction mechanism, dynamics/thermodynamics, and performance improvement in the last decade is provided. And at last, we propose the current challenges and future perspectives for promoting biological nanofibrous materials toward extracting strategic metal ions in practical conditions of natural seawater, brine, and wastewater.
