Aggregation-Induced Emission Boosting the Study of Polymer Science

The past one hundred years witness the great development of polymer science. The advancement of polymer science is closely related with the developing of characterization techniques and methods, from viscometry in molecular weight determination to advanced techniques including differential scanning calorimetry, nuclear magnetic resonance and scanning electron microscopy. However, these techniques are normally constrained to tedious sample preparation, high cost, harsh experimental condition, or ex-situ characterization. Fluorescence technology has the merits of high sensitivity and direct visualization. Contrary to conventional aggregation-causing quenching fluorophores, those dyes with aggregation-induced emission characteristic show high emission efficiency in aggregate states. Based on the restriction of intramolecular motions for AIE properties, the AIE materials are very sensitive to the surrounding microenvironments owing to the twisted propeller-like structures and therefore reveal great potentials in polymer's study. The AIE concept has been successfully used in polymer's study and provides us a deeper understanding on polymer structure and properties. In this review, the applications of AIEgens in polymer science for visualizing polymerization, glass transition, dissolution, crystallization, gelation, self-assembly, phase separation, cracking and self-healing were exemplified and summarized. Fluorene-Based Fluorometric and Colorimetric Conjugated Polymers for Sensitive Detection of 2,4,6-Trinitrophenol Explosive in Aqueous Medium

Nitroaromatic explosives are a class of compounds that are responsible for various health hazards and terrorist outrages. Among these, sensitive detection of 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) explosive has always been highly desirable considering public health and national security. In this regard, three fluorene-based conjugated polymers (CP 1, CP 2, and CP 3) were synthesized through the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction and were found to be highly sensitive for fluorescence detection of TNP with detection limits of 3.2, 5.7, and 6.1 pM, respectively. Excellent selectivity of CPs toward TNP was attributed to their unique π-π interactions based on fluorescence studies and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The high sensitivity of CPs to TNP was attributed to the static quenching mechanism based on the photoinduced electron transfer process and was evaluated by fluorescence, UV-visible absorption, dynamic light scattering, Job's plots, the Benesi-Hildebrand plots, and DFT calculations. CPs were also used for colorimetric and real-water sample analysis for the detection of TNP explosive. Meanwhile, sensor-coated test strips were fabricated for on-site detection of TNP, which makes them convenient solid-supported sensors.

In Situ Generation of Heterocyclic Polymers by Triple-Bond Based Polymerizations

Stemming from unique ring structures, heterocyclic polymers exhibit distinguished electrical, mechanical, and photophysical properties and have been widely used in a variety of important applications. Along with the technological significance are the challenges in their synthesis. Traditional synthetic strategies toward heterocyclic polymers often require the direct attachment of heterocycles to polymer backbones, which are generally limited by the lack of suitable and low-cost heterocyclic monomers, tedious reaction process, difficulties in incorporation of multiple substitutents, etc. Alternatively, in situ construction of heterocyclic polymers via triple-bond based polymerization offers promising prospects. This review summarized the recent progress on polymerizations of triple-bond based monomers including alkynes, nitriles, and isonitriles that can in situ generate heterocyclic polymers. The properties and advanced applications of the derived heterocyclic polymers will also be discussed. Finally, the future perspectives and challenges in this field will be addressed.

Metal-Free Catalysts for the Polymerization of Alkynyl-Based Monomers

Novel polymerizations based on alkyne monomers are becoming a powerful tool to construct polymers with unique structures and advanced functions in the areas of polymer and material sciences, and scientists have been attracted to develop a variety of novel polymerizations in recent decades. Therein, catalytic systems play an indispensable role in the influence of polymerization efficiencies and the performances of the resultant polymers. Concerning the shortcomings of metallic catalysts, much of the recent research focus has been on metal-free polymerization systems. In this paper, metal-free catalysts are classified and the corresponding polymerizations are reviewed, including organobase-catalyzed polymerizations, Lewis-acid-catalyzed polymerizations, as well as catalyst-free polymerizations. Moreover, the challenges and perspectives in this area are also briefly discussed.

Construction of Functional Hyperbranched Poly(phenyltriazolylcarboxylate)s by Metal-Free Phenylpropiolate-Azide Polycycloaddition

The 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of activated internal alkynes with azides has been developed into an efficient polymerization reaction for constructing functional linear 1,4,5-trisubstitued polytriazoles. However, it is rarely employed for the synthesis of hyperbranched polymers. In this work, metal-free polycycloadditions of tris(3-phenylpropiolate)s (1) and tetraphenylethene-containing diazides (2) are performed in dimethylformamide at 100 °C for 7 and 12 h, producing hyperbranched poly(phenyltriazolylcarboxylate)s (hb-PPTCs) with high molecular weights and satisfactory regioregularities in good yields. The hb-PPTCs have good solubility in common organic solvents and high thermal stability. They are non-emissive in solutions, but emit intensively upon aggregation, showing an aggregation-induced emission effect. Their aggregates can work as fluorescent sensors for explosive detection with high sensitivity. Furthermore, the polymers can be utilized for the fabrication of 2D fluorescent patterns with high resolution by UV irradiation through copper grid masks.

Progress on Catalytic Systems Used in Click Polymerization

Click polymerization, a powerful synthetic technique to construct polymers with unique structures and advanced functions, is of crucial importance in the areas of polymer and material sciences. A variety of click polymerizations such as azide-alkyne, thiol-yne, amino-yne, and hydroxyl-yne reactions have been established, wherein the catalytic systems play an indispensable role in realizing these highly practical reactions based on triple-bond building blocks, as they directly influence the efficiencies of the click polymerizations and the performances of the resultant polymers. The vital employment of catalysts is reviewed and their developments from innovative discoveries to the eminent position are outlined. Moreover, the challenges and perspectives in this area are also briefly discussed.

Conjugated polymers containing tetraphenylethylene in the backbones and side-chains for highly sensitive TNT detection

The novel polytriphenylamines derivatives PTPA1-TPE and PTPA2-TPE with TPE as side groups and bis(tert-butyl)-TPE in the backbones have been successfully synthesized via Yamamoto-type coupling under microwave heating. The incorporation of TPE units in the backbones and side-chains endows the polymers with a distinct AIE effect and high fluorescence quantum yields in the solid state. Meanwhile, nitroaromatic explosive detection based on dispersed, electron-rich PTPA1-TPE and PTPA2-TPE nanoaggregates in THF/water was carried out. Both of them show high sensitivity towards the TNT analyte, with a maximum Stern-Volmer quenching constant K sv of up to 8.3 × 104 M-1. In addition, the paper strip test demonstrates the promising practical application of the polymers as solid state sensors towards PL-based nitroaromatic explosive detection.

Recent advances in alkyne-based click polymerizations
