Glycidyl Triazolyl Polymers: Poly(ethylene glycol) Derivatives Functionalized by Azide-Alkyne Cycloaddition Reaction

Copper-Free Synthesis of Cationic Glycidyl Triazolyl Polymers

Copper-free synthesis of cationic glycidyl triazolyl polymers (GTPs) is achieved through a thermal azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction between glycidyl azide polymer and propiolic acid, followed by decarboxylation and quaternization of the triazole unit. For synthesizing nonfunctionalized GTP (GTP-H), a microwave-assisted method enhances the decarboxylation reaction of carboxy-functionalized GTP (GTP-COOH). Three variants of cationic GTPs with different N-substituents [N-ethyl, N-butyl, and N-tri(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (EG3)] are synthesized. The molecular weight of GTP-H is determined via size exclusion chromatography. Thermal properties of all GTPs are characterized using differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The ionic conductivities of these cationic GTPs are assessed by impedance measurements. The conducting ion concentration and mobility are calculated based on the electrode polarization model. Among three cationic GTPs, the GTP with the N-EG3 substituent exhibits the highest ionic conductivity, reaching 6.8 × 10-6 S cm-1 at 25 °C under dry conditions. When compared to previously reported reference polymers, the reduction of steric crowding around the triazolium unit is considered to be a key factor in enhancing ionic conductivity.

Alkyl Substituent in Heterocyclic Substrate, Carbon Skeleton Length of O-Nucleophilic Agent and Conditions Influence the Product Composition from Competitive Reactions of SNipso Substitution by Aliphatic Oligoethers

Using 1H NMR spectroscopy, we studied the relative mobility of the NO2 group in 1-alkyl-5-nitro-1,2,4-triazoles in the reaction of nucleophilic heterocyclic substitution by aliphatic oligoethers. The main pathways of the SNipso substitution process and the composition of resultant products from competitive reactions were examined, and the key factors influencing the relative mobility of the nitro group, such as the nitrotriazole substrate constitution, the carbon skeleton length of the O-nucleophilic agent and the process conditions, were discussed. Several independent competitive reactions directed towards the substitution of the nitro group at position C(5) in the alkyltriazole substrate by different types of nucleophiles such as alkoxide-, hydroxide- and triazolonate anions were observed to take place under conditions used. The major reaction yielded oligoethers containing terminal alkyltriazole heterocycles. Secondary reactions occurred to form the corresponding triazolone and N-C triazolyl triazolone structures in the reaction system. Additionally, in excess of the alkaline agent, alkaline hydrolysis was observed to proceed at the final stages of the process involving the O-nucleophile having a longer oligoether backbone in the series studied, leading to the formation of new O-nucleophilic sites. The obtained findings can provide a foundation for devising a method for the modification of a wide range of commercially available aliphatic oligo- or polyethers to prepare functional macromolecules whose terminals carry bioactive 1,2,4-triazole heterocycles located at a desired distance from each other.

Poly(ionic liquid)s Based on Copolymers of Poly(ethylene oxide) and Cationic Glycidyl Triazolyl Polymers with Tribranched Side Chains

Copolymers comprising poly(ethylene oxide) and cationic glycidyl triazolyl polymer with tribranched side chains (PEO-co-GTP·3X) were synthesized from glycidyl azide copolymer (PEO-co-GAP) and the tricationic alkyne. A synthetic route for the tricationic alkyne was also improved. Bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (TFSI) and bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSI) were used as counteranions. Copolymers PEO-co-GTP·3TFSI and PEO-co-GTP·3FSI were characterized by NMR, IR, size exclusion chromatography, DSC, TGA, rheological, and impedance measurements. The NMR results suggested that the main chain of the copolymer was more flexible than that of the homopolymer. However, no major changes were detected in the glass transition temperature and ionic conductivity of the homopolymer and copolymer with TFSI counteranions. The counterion exchange from TFSI to FSI resulted in an increase in the storage modulus and complex viscosity because of the ionic association. Despite its unfavorable viscoelastic properties, PEO-co-GTP·3FSI exhibited higher ionic conductivity than PEO-co-GTP·3TFSI (3.9 × 10^-5 S cm^-1 at 25 °C under anhydrous conditions).

Glycidyl Azide Polymer and its Derivatives-Versatile Binders for Explosives and Pyrotechnics: Tutorial Review of Recent Progress

Glycidyl azide polymer (GAP), an energetic binder, is the focus of this review. We briefly introduce the key properties of this well-known polymer, the difference between energetic and non-energetic binders in propellant and explosive formulations, the fundamentals for producing GAP and its copolymers, as well as for curing GAP using different types of curing agents. We use recent works as examples to illustrate the general approaches to curing GAP and its derivatives, while indicating a number of recently investigated curing agents. Next, we demonstrate that the properties of GAP can be modified either through internal (structural) alterations or through the introduction of external (plasticizers) additives and provide a summary of recent progress in this area, tying it in with studies on the properties of such modifications of GAP. Further on, we discuss relevant works dedicated to the applications of GAP as a binder for propellants and plastic-bonded explosives. Lastly, we indicate other, emerging applications of GAP and provide a summary of its mechanical and energetic properties.
