Photo‐Modulating Multicolor Photoluminescence Including White‐Light Emission from a Photochromic Copolymer

Color-Tunable Binary Copolymers Manipulated by Intramolecular Aggregation and Hydrogen Bonding

Construction of color-tunable luminescent polymeric materials with enhanced emission intensity and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) performance regulated by a single chromophore component is highly desirable in the scope of photoluminescent materials. Herein, a set of binary copolymers were facilely synthesized using free radical polymerization by selecting different types of polymer matrix and N-substituted naphthalimides (NPA) as chromophores. Surprisingly, the fluorescence emission of copolymers could be remarkably enhanced, because of the intramolecular aggregation of NPA manipulated by a single polymer chain in both solution and solid state. Moreover, RTP signals of binary copolymers were all clearly observed in the air without any processing procedure, because of the embedding of phosphors into hydrogen bonding networks after copolymerization with vinyl-based acrylamide monomers. Taking advantages of the synergistic effect of copolymerization-induced aggregation and copolymerization-induced rigidification to promote optical performance, UV stimulus-responsive luminescent polymer films with processability, flexibility, and adjustable emission wavelength were simply prepared using a drop-casting method in large scale, the setting of which is the basis for application in the fields of organic optoelectronics, information security, and bioimaging/sensing.

Photoluminescent Polymer Nanoparticles Based on Oxazolidine Derivatives for Authentication and Security Marking of Confidential Notes

Colloidal materials have widely been used to develop innovative anticounterfeiting nanoinks for information encryption. Latex nanoparticles based on methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) bearing hydroxyl functional groups were synthesized via semicontinuous miniemulsion polymerization. The size determination of the nanoparticles and microscopic results showed mostly spherical nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution and a mean size of about 80 nm. Two oxazolidine derivatives were physically doped at the surface of the nanoparticles to prepare photoluminescent polymer nanoparticles. Hydroxyl functional groups at the surface of the nanoparticles led to their hydrogen bonding interactions with the doped luminescent compounds. Optical analysis of the photoluminescent nanoparticles displayed different fluorescence emission and UV-vis absorbance intensities based on the amount of polar groups located at the surface of colloidal nanoparticles. Reducing the particle size to below 100 nm along with increasing the surface area can assist the decrease of the light reflectance and improvement of the latex nanoparticles' efficiency in the anticounterfeiting industry. This preparation methodology can efficiently provide remarkable photoreversible anticounterfeiting nanoinks used in different applications, such as print marking, security encoded tags, labeling, probing, and handwriting.

Optical Chemosensors based on Spiropyran-Doped Polymer Nanoparticles for Sensing pH of Aqueous Media

Photochromic polymers, which are prepared by the incorporation of photochromic compounds into polymer matrices, show fluorescence emission along with color change under UV light irradiation. Polymer nanoparticles yield high chromic properties at low chromophore loadings, as they have a large surface area to absorb a high level of light irradiation. Particle size is a significant parameter to control optical properties, where the decrease of particle size results in a high light absorption and efficiency of photochromism and fluorescence emission. Reverse atom transfer radical polymerization was used to synthesize methyl methacrylate homopolymer and its copolymers with different comonomers to yield polymers with a narrow molecular weight distribution. Spiropyran was doped to the polymeric nanoparticles during nanoprecipitation to yield photochromic polymer nanoparticles. Particle size below 100 nm for the photochromic nanoparticles was shown by dynamic light scattering. Morphology investigation with microscopic analysis showed spherical morphology for nanoparticles. The photochromic properties of the polymer nanocarriers were studied in both acidic and alkaline media. The results indicated that the pH of the media as well as the copolymer composition significantly affect the optical properties. Therefore, the photochromic polymer nanoparticles could have potential applications as optical pH chemosensors by colorimetric and fluorometric detection mechanisms. The nanoparticles with hydroxyl- or amine-functional groups were shown to be highly efficient for pH chemosensor applications. Finally, photochromic cellulosic papers prepared from the photochromic polymer nanoparticles were highly applicable in the detection of acid vapors.

Recent Advances in Photochemical Reactions on Single-Molecule Electrical Platforms

The photochemical reaction is a very important type of chemical reactions. Visualizing and controlling photo-mediated reactions is a long-standing goal and challenge. In this regard, single-molecule electrical detection with label-free, real-time and in situ characteristics has unique advantages in monitoring the dynamic process of photoreactions at the single-molecule level. In this Review, we provide a valuable summary of the latest process of single-molecule photochemical reactions based on single-molecule electrical platforms. The single-molecule electrical detection platforms for monitoring photoreactions are displayed, including their fundamental principles, construction methods and practical applications. The single-molecule studies of two different types of light-mediated reactions are summarized as below: i) photo-induced reactions, including reversible cyclization, conformational isomerization and other photo-related reactions; ii) plasmon-mediated photoreactions, including reaction mechanisms and concrete examples, such as plasmon-induced photolysis of S-S/O-O bonds and tautomerization of porphycene. Dynamic Photochromic Polymer Nanoparticles Based on Matrix-Dependent Förster Resonance Energy Transfer and Aggregation-Induced Emission Properties

Dynamic color-tunable fluorescent materials are sought-after materials in many applications. Here, we report a polymeric matrix-regulated fluorescence strategy via synergistically modulating aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties and the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) process, which leads to tunable dynamic variation of color and photoluminescence (PL) intensity of fluorescent polymeric nanoparticles (FRET-PNPs) driven by photoirradiation. The FRET-PNPs were prepared via a facile one-pot miniemulsion copolymerization with the tetraphenyletheyl (TPE) and spiropyran (SP) units chemically bonded to the polymer matrix. The FRET-PNPs exhibited dynamic variation of fluorescence properties (colors and PL intensity) under photoirradiation on the timescale of minutes. The variation of the polymer matrix composition could deliberately influence the AIE property of TPE units and the isomerization process of SP to merocyanine units, which further affect the FRET efficiency of FRET-PNPs and, eventually, lead to versatile dynamic fluorescence variation. The dynamic fluorescence property as well as the excellent processability and film formation ability of FRET-PNPs allowed for diverse applications, such as warning labels, dynamic decorative painting, and multiple information encryption. Without sophisticated molecular design or tedious preparation processes, a new perspective for the design, fabrication, and performance optimization of fluorescent nanomaterials for innovative applications was proposed.

Multi-Stimuli Responsive FRET Processes of Bifluorophoric AIEgens in an Amphiphilic Copolymer and Its Application to Cyanide Detection in Aqueous Media

A novel amphiphilic aggregation-induced emission (AIE) copolymer, that is, poly(NIPAM-co-TPE-SP), consisting of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) as a hydrophilic unit and a tetraphenylethylene-spiropyran monomer (TPE-SP) as a bifluorophoric unit is reported. Upon UV exposure, the close form of non-emissive spiropyran (SP) in poly(NIPAM-co-TPE-SP) can be photo-switched to the open form of emissive merocyanine (MC) in poly(NIPAM-co-TPE-MC) in an aqueous solution, leading to ratiometric fluorescence of AIEgens between green TPE and red MC emissions at 517 and 627 nm, respectively, via Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). Distinct FRET processes of poly(NIPAM-co-TPE-MC) can be observed under various UV and visible light irradiations, acid-base conditions, thermal treatments, and cyanide ion interactions, which are also confirmed by theoretical studies. The subtle perturbations of environmental factors, such as UV exposure, pH value, temperature, and cyanide ion, can be detected in aqueous media by distinct ratiometric fluorescence changes of the FRET behavior in the amphiphilic poly(NIPAM-co-TPE-MC). Moreover, the first FRET sensor polymer poly(NIPAM-co-TPE-MC) based on dual AIEgens of TPE and MC units is developed to show a very high selectivity and sensitivity with a low detection limit (LOD = 0.26 μM) toward the cyanide ion in water, which only contain an approximately 1% molar ratio of the bifluorophoric content and can be utilized in cellular bioimaging applications for cyanide detections.

Solvent-controlled assembly of pillar[5]arene-based supramolecular networks via π–π interactions for white light modulation

A supramolecular network based on pyrene-containing pillar[5]arene and a red emissive Eu(iii) complex was constructed, whose assembly and emission can be controlled by solvent polarity, eventually achieving white light emission.

UV Rewritable Hybrid Graphene/Phosphor p-n Junction Photodiode

Graphene-based p-n junction photodiodes have a potential application prospect in photodetection due to their broadband spectral response, large operating bandwidth, and mechanical flexibility. Here, we report an ultraviolet (UV) rewritable p-n junction photodiode in a configuration of graphene coated with an amorphous phosphor of 4-bromo-1,8-naphthalic anhydride derivative polymer (poly-BrNpA). Under moderate UV irradiation, occurrence of photoisomerization reaction in the poly-BrNpA film leads to its drastically modified optical characteristics and a concurrent n-type doping in the underneath graphene. Meanwhile, the poly-BrNpA film, highly sensitive to water molecules, has a capability of restoring graphene to its initial p-type doping status by means of water adsorption. Based on these findings, a lateral graphene/poly-BrNpA p-n junction photodiode, responsive to visible light at the junction interface, can be written by UV irradiation and then erased via water adsorption. The p-n junction photodiode is rewritable upon such repetitive loops showing repeatable optoelectronic properties. This study provides a new scheme and perspective of making graphene-based rewritable p-n junction photodiodes in a flexible and controllable way, and it may contribute to expanding new families of optoelectronic devices based on two-dimensional materials.

Photoresponsive Luminescent Polymeric Hydrogels for Reversible Information Encryption and Decryption

Conventional luminescent information is usually visible under either ambient or UV light, hampering their potential application in smart confidential information protection. In order to address this challenge, herein, light-triggered luminescence ON-OFF switchable hybrid hydrogels are successfully constructed through in situ copolymerization of acrylamide, lanthanide complex, and diarylethene photochromic unit. The open-close behavior of the diarylethene ring in the polymer could be controlled by UV and visible light irradiation, where the close form of the ring features fluorescence resonance energy transfer with the lanthanide complex. The hydrogel-based blocks with tunable emission colors are then employed to construct 3D information codes, which can be read out under a 254 nm UV lamp. The exposure to 300 nm UV light leads to the luminescence quenching of the hydrogels, thus erasing the encoded information. Under visible light (>450 nm) irradiation, the luminescence is recovered to make the confidential information readable again. Thus, by simply alternating the exposure to UV and visible lights, the luminescence signals could become invisible and visible reversibly, allowing for reversible multiple information encryption and decryption.

Multiple Photoluminescent Processes from Pyrene Derivatives with Aggregation- and Mechano-Induced Excimer Emission

Two novel pyrene-based isocyanide gold(I) complexes have been designed and synthesized. The different structures lead to distinct and diverse photophysical properties both in solution and in the aggregate state. Multiple photoluminescence, involving monomer emission, locally excited emission and excimer emission, are observed. Notably, an excimer is formed by aggregation in solution and external mechanical stimulation in the solid state, showing aggregation- and mechano-induced excimer emission.

A Highly Efficient Red Metal-free Organic Phosphor for Time-Resolved Luminescence Imaging and Photodynamic Therapy

Developing highly efficient red metal-free organic phosphors for biological applications is a formidable challenge. Here, we report a novel molecular design principle to obtain red metal-free organic phosphors with long emission lifetime (504.6 μs) and high phosphorescence efficiency (14.6%) from the isolated molecules in the crystal. Furthermore, the well-dispersed phosphorescent nanodots (PNDs) with the particle size around 5 nm are prepared through polymer-encapsulation in an aqueous solution, which show good biocompatibility and low cytotoxicity. The metal-free PNDs are successfully applied to time-resolved luminescence imaging to eliminate background fluorescence interference both in vitro and vivo as well as effective photodynamic anticancer therapy for the first time. This work will not only pave a pathway to develop highly efficient metal-free RTP materials but also expand the scope of their applications to biomedical fields.

Insights into supramolecular-interaction-regulated piezochromic carbonized polymer dots

The photoluminescence (PL) mechanism plays a significant role in the study of carbonized polymer dots (CPDs). The supramolecular interaction exists in most materials, which offers innate methods to regulate the optical and physical properties. However, insights into the tunable red- and blue-shifted PL peaks of CPDs by the supramolecular interaction still remain elusive. Herein, the supramolecular interaction-triggered fluorescence change of CPDs is reported by the investigation of the piezochromic behaviors. The π-conjugated system and the hydroxy group are both critical to manipulate the PL of CPDs under high pressure. The π-π stacking of the π-conjugated system was enhanced with increasing pressure, which induces the red-shifting of PL peaks, while the hydroxyl-related hydrogen bond formation eventually causes a blue-shift. In addition, their chemical stability, low toxicity, and the tunable PL properties of CPDs by supramolecular interaction under high pressure would deepen the understanding of the fluorescence mechanism of CPDs, inspiring extensive application prospects in sensing and light-emitting diodes.

A novel AIE-active dye for fluorescent nanoparticles by one-pot combination of Hantzsch reaction and RAFT polymerization: synthesis, molecular structure and application in cell imaging

In recent years, amphiphilic AIE-active fluorescent organic materials with aggregation-induced emission (AIE) properties have been extensively investigated due to their excellent properties. This study describes the synthesis of a novel AIE-active dye of tetraphenylethylene diphenylaldehyde (TPDA). As compared with the reported fluorescent dye TPB, the fluorescence intensity of TPDA is significantly enhanced with the distinct red shift of emission wavelength. Subsequently, the corresponding novel polymers PEG-TPD were obtained through the one-pot combination of Hantzsch reaction and RAFT polymerization. The structure of PEG-TPD1 by the two-step process was similar with that of PEG-TPD2 by the one-pot method at the same feeding ratio of TPDA and PEGMA. The molecular weights (M_n) of the polymers PEG-TPD1 and PEG-TPD2 were respectively 52 000 and 28 000 with narrow polydispersity index (PDI), and their molar fractions of TPDA were respectively about 9.5% and 14.3%, indicating that the degree of Hantzsch reaction in the one-pot process was more complete. Subsequently, the effect of feed ratio of TPDA and PEGMA on polymer structure was further studied. It can be seen that the M_n of the polymers gradually increases as the proportion of TPDA increases. In aqueous solution, these amphiphilic PEG-TPD polymers tended to self-assemble into corresponding fluorescent polymer nanoparticles (FPNs). The diameter of PEG-TPD2 FPNs ranged from 200 to 300 nm, and their fluorescence emission spectra have maximum emission peak at 509 nm. The PEG-TPD FPNs have significant advantages such as good fluorescence intensity, high water dispersibility, good biocompatibility and easy absorption by cells, which can be attractively used in the field of bioimaging.

This work reported the fabrication of a novel AIE-active dye and its amphiphilic PEG-TPD fluorescent polymers via one-pot combination of RAFT polymerization and Hantzsch reaction, which showed potential applications in bioimaging.
