Analysis of natural organic matter via fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry: an overview of recent non-petroleum applications

Selective molecular characterization of organic aerosols using in situ laser desorption ionization mass spectrometry

RATIONALE

The sources and chemical compositions of organic aerosol (OA) exert a significant influence on both regional and global atmospheric conditions, thereby having far-reaching implications on environmental chemistry. However, existing mass spectrometry (MS) methods have limitations in characterizing the detailed composition of OA due to selective ionization as well as fractionation during cold-water extraction and solid-phase extraction (SPE).

METHODS

A comprehensive MS study was conducted using aerosol samples collected on dusty, clean, and polluted days. To supplement the data obtained from electrospray ionization (ESI), a strategy for analyzing OAs collected using the quartz fiber filter directly utilizing laser desorption ionization (LDI) was employed. Additionally, the ESI method was conducted to explore suitable approaches for determining various OA compositions from samples collected on dusty, clean, and polluted days.

RESULTS

In situ LDI has the advantages of significantly reducing the sample volume, simplifying sample preparation, and overcoming the problem of overestimating sulfur-containing compounds usually encountered in ESI. It is suitable for the characterization of highly unsaturated and hydrophobic aerosols, such as brown carbon-type compounds with low volatility and high stability, which is supplementary to ESI.

CONCLUSIONS

Compared with other ionization methods, in situ LDI helps provide a complementary description of the molecular compositions of OAs, especially for analyzing OAs in polluted day samples. This method may contribute to a more comprehensive MS analysis of the elusive compositions and sources of OA in the atmosphere.

Proposed Missions to Collect Samples for Analyzing Evidence of Life in the Venusian Atmosphere

The recent and still controversial claim of phosphine detection in the venusian atmosphere has reignited consideration of whether microbial life might reside in its cloud layers. If microbial life were to exist within Venus' cloud deck, these microorganisms would have to be multi-extremophiles enclosed within the cloud aerosol particles. The most straightforward approach for resolving the question of their existence is to obtain samples of the cloud particles and analyze their interior. While developing technology has made sophisticated in situ analysis possible, more detailed information could be obtained by examining samples with instrumentation in dedicated ground-based facilities. Ultimately, therefore, Venus Cloud-level Sample Return Missions will likely be required to resolve the question of whether living organisms exist in the clouds of Venus. Two multiphase mission concepts are currently under development for combining in situ analyses with a sample return component. The Venus Life Finder architecture proposes collection of cloud particles in a compartment suspended from a balloon that floats for weeks at the desired altitude, while the Novel solUtion for Venus explOration and Lunar Exploitation (NUVOLE) concept involves a glider that cruises within the cloud deck for 1200 km collecting cloud aerosol particles through the key regions of interest. Both architectures propose a rocket-driven ascent with the acquired samples transported to a high venusian orbit as a prelude to returning to Earth or the Moon. Both future conceptual missions with their combined phases will contribute valuable information relative to the habitability of the clouds at Venus, but their fulfillment is decades away. We suggest that, in the meantime, a simplification of a glider cloud-level sample collection scenario could be accomplished in a shorter development time at a lower cost. Even if the cloud particles are not organic and show no evidence of living organisms, they would reveal critical insights about the natural history and evolution of Venus.

Characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in Chinese farmland soils under different climate zone types: A molecular perspective

Interactions between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and surrounding environments are highly complex. Understanding DOM at the molecular level can contribute to the management of soil pollution and safeguarding agricultural fields. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR-MS) has enabled a molecular-level understanding of DOM. Accordingly, in this study, we investigated soil samples from 27 different regions of mainland China with various soil types and climatic characteristics. Based on the geographical features of the four typical climatic zones in mainland China (temperate monsoon, temperate continental, subtropical monsoon, and Qinghai-Tibet Plateau climates), we employed high-resolution mass spectrometry to determine the molecular diversity of DOM under different climatic conditions. The results indicated that lignin and tannin-like substances were the most active categories of DOM in the soils. Collectively, the composition and unsaturation of DOM molecules are influenced by sunlight, precipitation, temperature, and human activity. All climatic regions contained a substantial number of characteristic molecules, with CHO and CHON constituting over 80%, and DOM containing nitrogen and sulfur was relatively more abundant in the monsoon regions. The complex composition of DOM incorporates various active functional groups, such as -NO2 and -ONO2. Furthermore, soil DOM in the monsoon regions showed higher unsaturation and facilitated various (bio) biochemical reactions in the soil.

Chemometric Combination of Ultrahigh Resolving Mass Spectrometry and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy for a Structural Characterization of Lignin Compounds

In recent years, the potential of lignins as a resource for material-based applications has been highlighted in many scientific and nonscientific publications. But still, to date, a lack of detailed structural knowledge about this ultracomplex biopolymer undermines its great potential. The chemical complexity of lignin demands a combination of different, powerful analytical methods, in order to obtain these necessary information. In this paper, we demonstrate a multispectroscopic approach using liquid-state and solid-state Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy to characterize a fractionated LignoBoost lignin. Individual FT-ICR-MS, tandem MS, and NMR results helped to determine relevant information about the different lignin fractions, such as molecular weight distributions, oligomer sizes, linkage types, and presence of specific functional groups. In addition, a hetero spectroscopic correlation approach was applied to chemometrically combine MS, MS/MS, and NMR data sets. From these correlation analyses, it became obvious that a combination of tandem MS and NMR data sets gives the opportunity to comprehensively study and describe the general structure of complex biopolymer samples. Compound-specific structural information are obtainable, if this correlation approach is extended to 1D-MS and NMR data, as specific functional groups or linkages are verifiable for a defined molecular formula. This enables structural characterization of individual lignin compounds without the necessity for tandem MS experiments. Hence, these correlation results significantly improve the depth of information of each individual analysis and will hopefully help to structurally elucidate entire lignin structures in the near future.

FT-ICR MS Spectral Improvement of Dissolved Organic Matter by the Absorption Mode: A Comparison of the Electrospray Ionization in Positive-Ion and Negative-Ion Modes

Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) in the absorption mode has a superior performance over the conventional magnitude mode. However, this improved performance for the analysis of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in negative-ion and positive-ion modes of electrospray ionization [ESI(-) and ESI(+), respectively] remains unknown. This study systemically compared the improved performance by the absorption mode for DOM FT-ICR MS spectra acquired with the low-field and high-field magnet instruments between two charge modes. The absorption mode enhanced the resolution and signal-to-noise ratio values of DOM peaks with factors of 1.88-1.94 and 1.60-1.72, respectively. The significantly higher improvement of mass resolution for the ESI(+) mode than that for the ESI(-) mode could resolve the extensive occurrence of mass doublets in the ESI(+) mode, yielding some formulas exclusively identified in the ESI(+) mode. The findings of this study have systemically demonstrated the superiority of the absorption mode in improving the spectra quality during the routine FT-ICR MS postdata analysis and highlighted its great potential in characterizing the molecular composition of DOM using the FT-ICR MS technique in both ESI(-) and ESI(+) modes.

Molecular and optical signatures of photochemical transformation of dissolved organic matter: Nonnegligible role of suspended particulate matter in urban river

Natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) is one of the Earth's dynamic carbon pools and a key intermediate in the global carbon cycle. Photochemical processes potentially affect DOM composition and activity in surface water. Suspended particulate matter (SPM) is the integral component of slow-moving rivers, and holds the potential for photochemical reactivity. To further investigate the influence of SPM on DOM photochemical transformation, this study conducted experiments comparing samples with and without SPM irradiated under simulated sunlight. Surface water samples from slow-moving urban rivers were collected. DOM optical characteristics and molecular features obtained by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) were investigated. Photolabile DOM was enriched in unsaturated and highly aromatic terrestrial substances. Photoproduced DOM had low aromaticity and was dominated by saturated aliphatics, protein-like substances, and carbohydrates. Study results indicated that the presence of SPM had a nonnegligible impact on the molecular traits of DOM, such as composition, molecular diversity, photolability, and bioavailability during photochemical reactions. In the environment affected by SPM, molecules containing heteroatoms exhibit higher photosensitivity. SPM promotes the photochemical transformation of a wider range of chemical types of photolabile DOM, particularly nitrogen-containing compounds. This study provides an essential insight into the more precise simulation of photochemical reactions of DOM influenced by SPM occurring in natural rivers, contributing to our understanding of the global carbon cycle from new theoretical perspectives.

Characterizing lignins from various sources and treatment processes after optimized sample preparation techniques and analysis via ESI-HRMS and custom mass defect software tools

Sample preparation of complex, natural mixtures such as lignin prior to mass spectrometry analysis, however minimal, is a critical step in ensuring accurate and interference-free results. Modern shotgun-MS techniques, where samples are directly injected into a high-resolution mass spectrometer (HRMS) with no prior separation, usually still require basic sample pretreatment such as filtration and appropriate solvents for full dissolution and compatibility with atmospheric pressure ionization interfaces. In this study, sample preparation protocols have been established for a unique sample set consisting of a wide variety of degraded lignin samples from numerous sources and treatment processes. The samples were analyzed via electrospray (ESI)-HRMS in negative and positive ionization modes. The resulting information-rich HRMS datasets were then transformed into the mass defect space with custom R scripts as well as the open-source Constellation software as an effective way to visualize changes between the samples due to the sample preparation and ionization conditions as well as a starting point for comprehensive characterization of these varied sample sets. Optimized conditions for the four investigated lignins are proposed for ESI-HRMS analysis for the first time, giving an excellent starting point for future studies seeking to better characterize and understand these complex mixtures.

Deep Characterization of Serum Metabolome Based on the Segment-Optimized Spectral-Stitching Direct-Infusion Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry Approach

Direct-infusion Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (DI-FTICR MS) shows great promise for metabolomic analysis due to ultrahigh mass accuracy and resolution. However, most of the DI-FTICR MS approaches focused on high-throughput metabolomics analysis at the expense of sensitivity and resolution and the potential for metabolome characterization has not been fully explored. Here, we proposed a novel deep characterization approach of serum metabolome using a segment-optimized spectral-stitching DI-FTICR MS method integrated with high-confidence and database-independent formula assignments. With varied acquisition parameters for each segment, a highly efficient acquisition was achieved for the whole mass range with sub-ppm mass accuracy. In a pooled human serum sample, thousands of features were assigned with unambiguous formulas and possible candidates based on highly accurate mass measurements. Furthermore, a reaction network was used to select confidently unique formulas from possible candidates, which was constructed by unambiguous formulas and possible candidates connected by the formula differences resulting from biochemical and MS transformation. Compared with full-range and conventional segment acquisition, 8- and 1.2-fold increases in observed features were achieved, respectively. Assignment accuracy was 93-94% for both a standard mixture containing 190 metabolites and a spiked serum sample with the root mean square mass error of 0.15-0.16 ppm. In total, 3534 unequivocal neutral molecular formulas were assigned in the pooled serum sample, 35% of which are contained in the HMDB. This method offers great enhancement in the deep characterization of serum metabolome by DI-FTICR MS.

Identification of Trace Components in Sauce-Flavor Baijiu by High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry

Sauce-flavor Baijiu is one of the most complex and typical types of traditional Chinese liquor, whose trace components have an important impact on its taste and quality. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) is one of the most favorable analytical tools to reveal trace molecular components in complex samples. This study analyzed the chemical diversity of several representative sauce-flavor Baijiu using the combination of electrospray ionization (ESI) and FT-ICR MS. The results showed that ESI+ and ESI- exhibited different chemical features characteristic of trace components. Overall, sauce-flavor Baijiu was dominated by CHO class compounds, and the main specific compound types were aliphatic, highly unsaturated with low oxygen, and peptide-like compounds. The mass spectral parameters resolved by FT-ICR MS of several well-known brands were relatively similar, whereas the greatest variability was observed from an internally supplied brand. This study provides a new perspective on the mass spectrometry characteristics of trace components of sauce-flavor Baijiu and offers a theoretical foundation for further optimization of the gradients in Baijiu.

Fractionation and characterization of dissolved organic matter using solid-phase extraction followed by Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry with electrospray, atmospheric pressure photoionization, and laser desorption ionization

RATIONALE

Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) combined with different ionization techniques provides a powerful means to characterize dissolved organic matter (DOM) at the molecular level. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) is currently the most widely utilized method for extracting the DOM, but one-step elution using methanol does not provide a comprehensive picture of DOM. The development of efficient extraction and enrichment methods as well as characterization techniques from water samples remains a priority for DOM research, which is investigated in this study.

METHODS

The DOM was extracted from lake water by SPE using one-step elution (methanol or dichloromethane) and multistep elution (water, methanol, acetone, and dichloromethane). A combination of electrospray ionization (ESI), atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI), and matrix-free laser desorption ionization (LDI) was utilized for FT-ICR MS analysis in both positive (+) and negative (-) ion modes.

RESULTS

The total recovery of the multistep elution was 23.5% higher as compared to the investigated one-step elution procedure (85% vs. 61.6%); however, a comparison of the observed molecular species and the range of diversity under different ionization techniques along with the statistical analyses showed that proper selection of solvent and ionization method was required to explore specific compounds from the sample.

CONCLUSIONS

For DOM species containing different heteroatoms, a combination of ESI, APPI, and LDI can offer a comprehensive profile of DOM in aquatic ecosystems. The specific molecular formulae of each ionization technique are characterized as follows: ESI- mode exhibited strong selectivity for lignin-like and tannins-like species with high oxygen content, as well as organosulfates. ESI+ favored lipid species and peptide/protein compounds. Unsaturated and condensed aromatic hydrocarbons with low oxygen were preferably ionized by both APPI and LDI.

Fully Automated Unconstrained Analysis of High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry Data with Machine Learning

Mass spectrometry (MS) is a convenient, highly sensitive, and reliable method for the analysis of complex mixtures, which is vital for materials science, life sciences fields such as metabolomics and proteomics, and mechanistic research in chemistry. Although it is one of the most powerful methods for individual compound detection, complete signal assignment in complex mixtures is still a great challenge. The unconstrained formula-generating algorithm, covering the entire spectra and revealing components, is a "dream tool" for researchers. We present the framework for efficient MS data interpretation, describing a novel approach for detailed analysis based on deisotoping performed by gradient-boosted decision trees and a neural network that generates molecular formulas from the fine isotopic structure, approaching the long-standing inverse spectral problem. The methods were successfully tested on three examples: fragment ion analysis in protein sequencing for proteomics, analysis of the natural samples for life sciences, and study of the cross-coupling catalytic system for chemistry.

Chemical and Reactive Transport Processes Associated with Hydraulic Fracturing of Unconventional Oil/Gas Shales

Hydraulic fracturing of unconventional oil/gas shales has changed the energy landscape of the U.S. Recovery of hydrocarbons from tight, hydraulically fractured shales is a highly inefficient process, with estimated recoveries of <25% for natural gas and <5% for oil. This review focuses on the complex chemical interactions of additives in hydraulic fracturing fluid (HFF) with minerals and organic matter in oil/gas shales. These interactions are intended to increase hydrocarbon recovery by increasing porosities and permeabilities of tight shales. However, fluid-shale interactions result in the dissolution of shale minerals and the release and transport of chemical components. They also result in mineral precipitation in the shale matrix, which can reduce permeability, porosity, and hydrocarbon recovery. Competition between mineral dissolution and mineral precipitation processes influences the amounts of oil and gas recovered. We review the temporal/spatial origins and distribution of unconventional oil/gas shales from mudstones and shales, followed by discussion of their global and U.S. distributions and compositional differences from different U.S. sedimentary basins. We discuss the major types of chemical additives in HFF with their intended purposes, including drilling muds. Fracture distribution, porosity, permeability, and the identity and molecular-level speciation of minerals and organic matter in oil/gas shales throughout the hydraulic fracturing process are discussed. Also discussed are analysis methods used in characterizing oil/gas shales before and after hydraulic fracturing, including permeametry and porosimetry measurements, X-ray diffraction/Rietveld refinement, X-ray computed tomography, scanning/transmission electron microscopy, and laboratory- and synchrotron-based imaging/spectroscopic methods. Reactive transport and spatial scaling are discussed in some detail in order to relate fundamental molecular-scale processes to fluid transport. Our review concludes with a discussion of potential environmental impacts of hydraulic fracturing and important knowledge gaps that must be bridged to achieve improved mechanistic understanding of fluid transport in oil/gas shales.

Enhanced Speciation of Pyrogenic Organic Matter from Wildfires Enabled by 21 T FT-ICR Mass Spectrometry

Wildfires affect soils through the formation of pyrogenic organic matter (pyOM) (e.g., char and soot). While many studies examine the connection between pyOM persistence and carbon (C) composition, nitrogen (N) transformation in wildfire-impacted systems remains poorly understood. Thermal reactions in wildfires transform biomass into a highly complex, polyfunctional, and polydisperse organic mixture that challenges most mass analyzers. High-field Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) is the only mass analyzer that achieves resolving powers sufficient to separate species that differ in mass by the mass of an electron across a wide molecular weight range (m/z 150-1500). We report enhanced speciation of organic N by positive-ion electrospray ionization (ESI) that leverages ultrahigh resolving power (m/Δm_50% = 1 800 000 at m/z 400) and mass accuracy (<10-100 ppb) achieved by FT-ICR MS at 21 T. Isobaric overlaps, roughly the mass of an electron (M_e^- = 548 μDa), are resolved across a wide molecular weight range and are more prevalent in positive ESI than negative ESI. The custom-built 21 T FT-ICR MS instrument identifies previously unresolved mass differences in C_cH_hN_nO_oS_s formulas and assigns more than 30 000 peaks in a pyOM sample. This is the first molecular catalogue of pyOM by positive-ion ESI 21 T FT-ICR MS and presents a method to provide new insight into terrestrial cycling of organic carbon and nitrogen in wildfire impacted ecosystems.

A Use of Tritium-Labeled Peat Fulvic Acids and Polyphenolic Derivatives for Designing Pharmacokinetic Experiments on Mice

Natural products (e.g., polyphenols) have been used as biologically active compounds for centuries. Still, the mechanisms of biological activity of these multicomponent systems are poorly understood due to a lack of appropriate experimental techniques. The method of tritium thermal bombardment allows for non-selective labeling and tracking of all components of complex natural systems. In this study, we applied it to label two well-characterized polyphenolic compounds, peat fulvic acid (FA-Vi18) and oxidized lignin derivative (BP-Cx-1), of predominantly hydrophilic and hydrophobic character, respectively. The identity of the labeled samples was confirmed using size exclusion chromatography. Using ultra-high resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT ICR MS), key differences in the molecular composition of BP-Cx-1 and FA-Vi18 were revealed. The labeled samples ([³H]-FA-Vi18 (10 mg/kg) and [³H]-BP-Cx-1 (100 mg/kg)) were administered to female BALB/c mice intravenously (i.v.) and orally. The label distribution was assessed in blood, liver, kidneys, brain, spleen, thymus, ovaries, and heart using liquid scintillation counting. Tritium label was found in all organs studied at different concentrations. For the fulvic acid sample, the largest accumulation was observed in the kidney (C_max 28.5 mg/kg and 5.6 mg/kg, respectively) for both routes. The organs of preferential accumulation of the lignin derivative were the liver (C_max accounted for 396.7 and 16.13 mg/kg for i.v. and p.o. routes, respectively) and kidney (C_max accounted for 343.3 and 17.73 mg/kg for i.v. and p.o. routes, respectively). Our results demonstrate that using the tritium labeling technique enabled successful pharmacokinetic studies on polyphenolic drugs with very different molecular compositions. It proved to be efficient for tissue distribution studies. It was also shown that the dosage of the polyphenolic drug might be lower than 10 mg/kg due to the sensitivity of the ³H detection technique.

Soil Organic Matter Characterization by Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometry (FTICR MS): A Critical Review of Sample Preparation, Analysis, and Data Interpretation

The biogeochemical cycling of soil organic matter (SOM) plays a central role in regulating soil health, water quality, carbon storage, and greenhouse gas emissions. Thus, many studies have been conducted to reveal how anthropogenic and climate variables affect carbon sequestration and nutrient cycling. Among the analytical techniques used to better understand the speciation and transformation of SOM, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FTICR MS) is the only technique that has sufficient mass resolving power to separate and accurately assign elemental compositions to individual SOM molecules. The global increase in the application of FTICR MS to address SOM complexity has highlighted the many challenges and opportunities associated with SOM sample preparation, FTICR MS analysis, and mass spectral interpretation. Here, we provide a critical review of recent strategies for SOM characterization by FTICR MS with emphasis on SOM sample collection, preparation, analysis, and data interpretation. Data processing and visualization methods are presented with suggested workflows that detail the considerations needed for the application of molecular information derived from FTICR MS. Finally, we highlight current research gaps, biases, and future directions needed to improve our understanding of organic matter chemistry and cycling within terrestrial ecosystems.

Characteristics and Evolution of Nitrogen in the Heavy Components of Algae Pyrolysis Bio-Oil

Algae pyrolytic bio-oil contains a large quantity of N-containing components (NCCs), which can be processed as valuable chemicals, while the harmful gases can also be released during bio-oil upgrading. However, the characteristics of NCCs in the bio-oil, especially the composition of heavy NCCs (molecular weight ≥200 Da), have not been fully studied due to the limitation of advanced analytical methods. In this study, three kinds of algae rich in lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates were rapidly pyrolyzed (10-25 °C/s) at different temperatures (300-700 °C). The bio-oil was analyzed using a Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometer equipped with electrospray ionization, and the characteristics and evolution of nitrogen in heavy components were first obtained. The results indicated that the molecular weight of most heavy NCCs was distributed in the 200-400 Da range. N_1-3 compounds account for over 60% in lipid and protein-rich samples, while N₀ and N₄ components are prominent in carbohydrate-rich samples. As temperature increases, most NCCs become more aromatic and contain less O due to the strong Maillard and deoxygenation reactions. Moreover, the heavier NCCs were promoted to form lighter compounds with more nitrogen atoms through decomposition (mainly denitrogenation and deoxygenation). Finally, some strategies to deal with the NCCs for high-quality bio-oil production were proposed.

Optical Microscopy-Guided Laser Ablation Electrospray Ionization Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry: Ambient Single Cell Metabolomics with Increased Confidence in Molecular Identification

Single cell analysis is a field of increasing interest as new tools are continually being developed to understand intercellular differences within large cell populations. Laser-ablation electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (LAESI-MS) is an emerging technique for single cell metabolomics. Over the years, it has been validated that this ionization technique is advantageous for probing the molecular content of individual cells in situ. Here, we report the integration of a microscope into the optical train of the LAESI source to allow for visually informed ambient in situ single cell analysis. Additionally, we have coupled this ‘LAESI microscope’ to a drift-tube ion mobility mass spectrometer to enable separation of isobaric species and allow for the determination of ion collision cross sections in conjunction with accurate mass measurements. This combined information helps provide higher confidence for structural assignment of molecules ablated from single cells. Here, we show that this system enables the analysis of the metabolite content of Allium cepa epidermal cells with high confidence structural identification together with their spatial locations within a tissue.

Characterization of Lignin Compounds at the Molecular Level: Mass Spectrometry Analysis and Raw Data Processing

Lignin is the second most abundant natural biopolymer, which is a potential alternative to conventional fossil fuels. It is also a promising material for the recovery of valuable chemicals such as aromatic compounds as well as an important biomarker for terrestrial organic matter. Lignin is currently produced in large quantities as a by-product of chemical pulping and cellulosic ethanol processes. Consequently, analytical methods are required to assess the content of valuable chemicals contained in these complex lignin wastes. This review is devoted to the application of mass spectrometry, including data analysis strategies, for the elemental and structural elucidation of lignin products. We describe and critically evaluate how these methods have contributed to progress and trends in the utilization of lignin in chemical synthesis, materials, energy, and geochemistry.
