Abstract
Background Helicobacterpylori (H. pylori) biofilm formation is a key factor in refractory H. pylori infection. The aim of this study was to understand research trends in H. pylori biofilms. Methods The Web of Science Core Collection database was used to retrieve publications published from 1998 to 2023. Different kinds of software, EXCEL, an online bibliometric analysis platform, and the VOS viewer were used to evaluate and visualize the bibliometric data. Results In total, 184 publications were identified, and the number of publications increased annually. The USA made the greatest contributions to this research field, while Helicobacter was the most productive journal. Grande rossella published the most papers, and the most productive institution was Gabriele D'Annunzio university. Co-occurrence network maps revealed that the keyword "Helicobacter pylori" ranked first in research field, and the keyword of "biofilm formation" and "in vitro" began to appear in the past three to five years. The majority of the five most-cited articles (60%) were published in USA and focused on the mechanism of H. pylori biofilm formation. Conclusion The annual number of publications on H. pylori biofilms has increased steadily over the past two decades and will continue to increase. Future studies should focus on evaluate the pharmacological effects, efficacy and safety of these anti-biofilm treatments in animal models and clinical trials.

Abstract
Background: The utilization of antibiotic adjuvants presents a promising strategy for addressing bacterial resistance. Recently, the development of antibiotic adjuvants has attracted considerable attention from researchers in academia and industry. This study aimed to identify the most influential publications on antibiotic adjuvants and elucidate the hotspots and research trends in this field. Method: Original articles and reviews related to antibiotic adjuvants were retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection database. The top 100 highly cited publications were selected and the visual analyses of publication outputs, countries, institutions, authors, journals, and keywords were conducted using Excel, VOSviewer, or CtieSpace software tools. Results: The top 100 cited publications concerning antibiotic adjuvants spanned the years 1977-2020, with citation counts ranging from 174 to 2,735. These publications encompassed 49 original articles and 51 reviews. The journal "Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy" accounted for the highest number of publications (12%). The top 100 cited publications emanated from 39 countries, with the United States leading in production. Institutions in Canada and the United States exhibited the most substantial contributions to these highly cited publications. A total of 526 authors participated in these studies, with Robert E.W. Hancock, Laura J. V. Piddock, Xian-Zhi Li, Hiroshi Nikaido, and Olga Lomovskaya emerging as the most frequently nominated authors. The most common keywords included "E. coli", "P. aeruginosa", "S. aureus", "in-vitro activity", "antimicrobial peptide", "efflux pump inhibitor" "efflux pump", "MexAB-OprM" and "mechanism". These keywords underscored the hotspots of bacterial resistance mechanisms and the development of novel antibiotic adjuvants. Conclusion: Through the bibliometric analysis, this study identified the top 100 highly cited publications on antibiotic adjuvants. Moreover, the findings offered a comprehensive understanding of the characteristics and frontiers in this field.

Abstract
Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) is an opportunistic human pathogen, which is involved in a wide range of dangerous infections. It develops alarming resistances toward antibiotic treatment. Therefore, alternative strategies, which suppress pathogenicity or synergize with antibiotic treatments are in great need to combat these infections more effectively. One promising approach is to disarm the bacteria by interfering with their quorum sensing (QS) system, which regulates the release of various virulence factors as well as biofilm formation. Herein, this work reports the rational design, optimization, and in-depth profiling of a new class of Pseudomonas quinolone signaling receptor (PqsR) inverse agonists. The resulting frontrunner compound features a pyrimidine-based scaffold, high in vitro and in vivo efficacy, favorable pharmacokinetics as well as clean safety pharmacology characteristics, which provide the basis for potential pulmonary as well as systemic routes of administration. An X-ray crystal structure in complex with PqsR facilitated further structure-guided lead optimization. The compound demonstrates potent pyocyanin suppression, synergizes with aminoglycoside antibiotic tobramycin against PA biofilms, and is active against a panel of clinical isolates from bronchiectasis patients. Importantly, this in vitro effect translated into in vivo efficacy in a neutropenic thigh infection model in mice providing a proof-of-principle for adjunctive treatment scenarios.

Abstract
Background In the past two decades, the surge of research on bacterial persisters has been inspired as increasingly concerning about the frequent failure of antibiotics treatment. This study was aimed at presenting a bibliometric and visualized analysis of relative publications on bacterial persisters, which offered insights into the development and research trends of this field. Methods The Web of Science Core Collection and Ovid MEDLINE databases were utilized to retrieve relevant publications on bacterial persisters from 2001 to 2021. After manual selection, data including titles, authors, journals, author keywords, addresses, the number of citations, and publication years were subsequently extracted. The data analysis and visual mapping were conducted with Excel, SPSS, R studio, and VOSviewer. Results In this study, 1,903 relevant publications on bacterial persisters were included. During 2001-2021, there was an exponential growth in the quantity of publications. It was found that these studies were conducted by 7,182 authors from 74 different countries. The USA led the scientific production with the highest total number of publications (859) and citation frequency (52,022). The Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy was the most influential journal with 113 relevant publications. The cooccurrence analysis revealed that studies on bacterial persisters focused on four aspects: "the role of persisters in biofilms," "clinical persistent infection," "anti-persister treatment," and "mechanism of persister formation." Conclusion In the past two decades, the global field of bacterial persisters has significantly increased. The USA was the leading country in this field. Mechanistic studies continued to be the future hotspots, which may be helpful to adopt new strategies against persisters and solve the problem of chronic infection in the clinic.

Abstract
Aim Bibliometric studies have gained popularity since they are able to define the characteristics of articles on specific subjects. The aim of this study was to analyze the characteristics of 100 most-cited papers related to septic arthritis of the native joints. Methods Web of Science database was analyzed and 100 most-cited articles about septic arthritis were determined. The characteristics of the articles including publication year, country, journal, study type, and sponsorship were recorded and investigated for any possible relationship with citation numbers. The visualization of the most commonly used keywords was made by software. Results The highest citation number and density were 309 and 21.6, respectively. The highest contribution was from the USA with 44 articles. The most common study type was case series with 26 articles. Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases journal had the highest number of articles with 8 papers. Fifteen studies were funded. The average citation density of review articles was significantly higher than in clinical and basic science studies (p < 0.001). Citation density was positively correlated with publication year and institution number, while it was negatively correlated with the level of evidence. Conclusion This study summarizes the general characteristics and research trends of the 100 most influential septic arthritis papers. Citation density and level of evidence performance were better in more recent articles. Additionally, citation density was higher in papers that included contributions from multiple institutions and papers with a high level of evidence. However, a high level of evidence is lacking indicating the need for better study design in future research.

Abstract
Background: Bacterial persisters are thought to be responsible for the recalcitrance and relapse of persistent infections, and they also lead to antibiotic treatment failure in clinics. In recent years, researches on bacterial persisters have attracted worldwide attention and the number of related publications is increasing. The purpose of this study was to better understand research trends on bacterial persisters by identifying and bibliometrics analyzing the top 100 cited publications in this field. Methods: The Web of Science Core Collection was utilized to retrieve the highly cited publications on bacterial persisters, and these publications were cross-matched with Google Scholar and Scopus. The top 100 cited publications were identified after reviewing the full texts. The main information of each publication was extracted and analyzed using Excel, SPSS, and VOSviewer. Results: The top 100 cited papers on bacterial persisters were published between 1997 and 2019. The citation frequency of each publication ranged from 147 to 1815 for the Web of Science Core Collection, 153 to 1883 for Scopus, and 207 to 2,986 for Google Scholar. Among the top 100 cited list, there were 64 original articles, 35 review articles, and 1 editorial material. These papers were published in 51 journals, and the Journal of Bacteriology was the most productive journal with 8 papers. A total of 14 countries made contributions to the top 100 cited publications, and 64 publications were from the United States. 15 institutions have published two or more papers and nearly 87% of them were from the United States. Kim Lewis from Northeastern University was the most influential author with 18 publications. Furthermore, keywords co-occurrence suggested that the main topics on bacterial persisters were mechanisms of persister formation or re-growth. Finally, “Microbiology” was the most frequent category in this field. Conclusion: This study identified and analyzed the top 100 cited publications related to bacterial persisters. The results provided a general overview of bacterial persisters and might help researchers to better understand the classic studies, historical developments, and new findings in this field, thus providing ideas for further research.

Abstract
PurposeThis study uses a bibliometric approach to analyze the overall status of e-government research by revealing patterns and trends that would help gain a broad understanding of global developments in the field and future directions.Design/methodology/approachAll documents related to e-government published from 2000 to 2019 were extracted from the Scopus and the Digital Government Reference Library databases. Bibexcel, Biblioshiny, and VOSviewer were used to perform the analyses and visualize the science mapping.FindingsThe results showed that 21,320 documents related to e-government research were published and cited 263,179 times. The annual growth rate of e-government research has reached 21.50%. The regression analysis showed that the growth rate is expected to increase gradually over the coming years. Despite the significant role that conference papers play in the e-government literature, the impact of articles far exceeds conference papers. The University of Albany (SUNY) has played an important role in e-government research in terms of production and impact. Furthermore, the study revealed some countries that are expected to play a prominent role in e-government research, as well as several topics that may attract more attention soon.Originality/valueThe results presented in this study and the comprehensive picture obtained about the e-government field make it an effective supplement to the expert evaluation. Thus, researchers, research managers, policymakers, institutions, funding agencies, and governments can rely on it.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Clostridioides (Clostridium) difficile (C. difficile) is still the most common cause of healthcare-associated diarrhoea and is increasing in prevalence as a community-acquired infection. In addition, the emergence of antibiotic resistance in C. difficile can increase the likelihood of the disease developing and/or spreading.
AIM To provide an up-to-date picture of the trends in publications related to C. difficile infection, together with specific insights into hot-button issues in this field.
METHODS Publications on C. difficile infections in the field of microbiology between 2001 and 2020 were identified from the Scopus database and Reference Citation Analysis. Bibliometric indicators were determined, including the number and type of publications, countries, affiliations, funding agencies, journals and citation patterns. VOSviewer was used to determine research areas and hot-button issues by identifying recurring terms with a high relative occurrence in the title and abstract.
RESULTS A total of 8127 documents on ‘C. difficile-associated diarrhoea’ published between 2001 and 2020 were retrieved from the Scopus database. In the last decade, there has been a significant almost fourfold increase in the number of published papers on this topic. The United States was among the countries (44.11%) with the most publications, and the most involved institution was the University of Leeds in the United Kingdom (2.50%). Three clusters of research were identified and included ‘illness spectrum and severity, as well as the signs, symptoms and clinical pathogenesis of C. difficile’; ‘laboratory diagnosis and characterization of C. difficile’ and ‘risk factors for C. difficile infection’.
CONCLUSION This study contains the most up-to-date and comprehensive data ever compiled in this field. More international research and cross-institutional collaborations are needed to address more global C. difficile concerns and to benefit from greater sharing of expertise, which will result in higher quality or more effective studies in the future. Promising research avenues in the near future may draw the attention of relevant scientists and funding organizations and open up novel C. difficile infection–based diagnosis and treatment approaches.

Abstract
Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms cause chronic, antibiotic tolerant infections in wounds and lungs. Numerous recent studies demonstrate that bacteria can detect human communication compounds through specific sensor/receptor tools that modulate bacterial physiology. Consequently, interfering with these mechanisms offers an exciting opportunity to directly affect the infection process. It is shown that the human hormone Atrial Natriuretic Peptide (hANP) both prevents the formation of P. aeruginosa biofilms and strongly disperses established P. aeruginosa biofilms. This hANP action is dose-dependent with a strong effect at low nanomolar concentrations and takes effect in 30-120 min. Furthermore, although hANP has no antimicrobial effect, it acts as an antibiotic adjuvant. hANP enhances the antibiofilm action of antibiotics with diverse modes of action, allowing almost full biofilm eradication. The hANP effect requires the presence of the P. aeruginosa sensor AmiC and the AmiR antiterminator regulator, indicating a specific mode of action. These data establish the activation of the ami pathway as a potential mechanism for P. aeruginosa biofilm dispersion. hANP appears to be devoid of toxicity, does not enhance bacterial pathogenicity, and acts synergistically with antibiotics. These data show that hANP is a promising powerful antibiofilm weapon against established P. aeruginosa biofilms in chronic infections.

Abstract
Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm formation is a primary cause of chronic infections. This has been a highly active area of research over the past two decades due to causing high mortality risks in immunocompromised patients. This study evaluates global trends in the dynamic and rapidly evolving field of P. aeruginosa biofilm research through bibliometric and visualized analyses. Publications from 1994 to 2018 on P. aeruginosa biofilm research were retrieved from Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed, and their bibliometric data were systematically studied. The VOSviewer software was used to conduct global analyses of bibliographic coupling, coauthorship, cocitation, and co-occurrence. A total of 9,527 publications were included in this study. The overall number of publications and research interest in the field displayed a strongly rising trend. The USA made the greatest contributions to the field, with the highest h-index and number of citations compared with other countries, while Denmark had the highest average citation per publication. The Journal of Bacteriology had the highest number of publications in the field, while the University of Copenhagen was the institution with the highest contribution influence. Co-occurrence network maps revealed that the most prominent topics in P. aeruginosa biofilm research were mechanistic studies, in vitro/in vivo studies, and biofilm formation studies. Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms constitute a dynamic research area in microbiology with increasing global research interest. Future studies will likely focus on investigating the mechanisms of biofilm formation to solve infection-associated clinical problems.
