Relativistic heavy atom effect on the 31 P NMR parameters of phosphine chalcogenides. Part 1. Chemical shifts

The Scope of the Applicability of Non-relativistic DFT Calculations of NMR Chemical Shifts in Pyridine-Metal Complexes for Applied Applications

Heavy metals are toxic, but it is impossible to stop using them. Considering the variety of molecular systems in which they can be present, the multicomponent nature and disorder of the structure of such systems, one of the most effective methods for studying them is NMR spectroscopy. This determines the need to calculate NMR chemical shifts for expected model systems. For elements beyond the third row of the periodic table, corrections for relativistic effects are necessary when calculating NMR parameters. Such corrections may be necessary even for light atoms due to the shielding effect of a neighboring heavy atom. This work examines the extent to which non-relativistic DFT calculations are able to reproduce experimental 15N and 113Cd NMR chemical shift tensors in pyridine-metal coordination complexes. It is shown that while for the calculation of 15N NMR chemical shift tensors there is no real need to consider relativistic corrections, for 113Cd, on the contrary, none of the tested calculation methods could reproduce the experimentally obtained tensor to any extent correctly.

Symmetrical and Mixed Tris(acyl)phosphines: Synthesis, Oxidation and Photochemistry

Herein, we present a convenient synthesis for symmetrical and mixed substituted tris(acyl)phosphines (TAPs) starting from red phosphorus. All TAPs exhibit a phosphaalkene-acylphosphine equilibrium, which was investigated in detail by variable-temperature (VT) NMR spectroscopy supported by density-functional theory (DFT) calculations. Depending on the substituents, two phosphaalkene derivatives and ten acylphosphine derivatives could be isolated. NMR spectroscopy and single-crystal X-ray crystallography enabled a clear structural assignment of these compounds. Oxidation of selected TAPs led to the formation of the corresponding tris(acyl)phosphine oxides (TAPOs). Furthermore, their spectroscopic properties as well as their photochemistry was investigated. Especially, the TAPO compounds were evaluated for their suitability as photoinitiators by CIDNP spectroscopy, photobleaching measurements and by storage stability tests.

New efficient pecS-n (n = 1, 2) basis sets for quantum chemical calculations of 31P NMR chemical shifts

The basis sets that are used in the quantum chemical calculations of ³¹P NMR chemical shifts have always been one of the most important factors of accuracy. Regardless of what high-quality approach is employed, using basis sets of insufficient flexibility in the important angular regions may give poor results and lead to misassignments of the signals in the ³¹P NMR spectra. In this work, it was found that the existing nonrelativistic basis sets for phosphorus atom of double- and triple-ζ quality, specialized for the ³¹P NMR chemical shifts calculations, are essentially undersaturated in the d-angular space that occurred to play a significant role in the overall accuracy of these calculations. This problem has been thoroughly investigated, and new pecS-n (n = 1, 2) basis sets for phosphorus chemical shifts calculations were proposed. The exponents and contraction coefficients for the pecS-n basis sets were generated with the property-energy consistent method that has been introduced in our earlier paper, and has been proven useful in the creation of efficient property-oriented basis sets. New basis sets were optimized using the GIAO-DFT method with the B97-2 functional. Extensive benchmark calculations showed that the pecS-1 and pecS-2 basis sets provide very good accuracy, characterized by the corrected mean absolute percentage errors against the experiment of about 7.03 and 4.42 ppm, respectively. In particular, the accuracy of ³¹P NMR chemical shifts calculations achieved with the pecS-2 basis set is one of the most favorable accuracies for today. We believe that our new pecS-n (n = 1, 2) basis sets for phosphorus atom will prove useful in modern large-scale quantum chemical calculations of ³¹P NMR chemical shifts.

New pecJ-n (n = 1, 2) Basis Sets for Selenium Atom Purposed for the Calculations of NMR Spin-Spin Coupling Constants Involving Selenium

We present new compact pecJ-n (n = 1, 2) basis sets for the selenium atom developed for the quantum-chemical calculations of NMR spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs) involving selenium nuclei. These basis sets were obtained at the second order polarization propagator approximation with coupled cluster singles and doubles amplitudes (SOPPA(CCSD)) level with the property-energy consistent (PEC) method, which was introduced in our previous papers. The existing SSCC-oriented selenium basis sets are rather large in size, while the PEC method gives more compact basis sets that are capable of providing accuracy comparable to that reached using the property-oriented basis sets of larger sizes generated with a standard even-tempered technique. This is due to the fact that the PEC method is very different in its essence from the even-tempered approaches. It generates new exponents through the total optimization of angular spaces of trial basis sets with respect to the property under consideration and the total molecular energy. New basis sets were tested on the coupled cluster singles and doubles (CCSD) calculations of SSCCs involving selenium in the representative series of molecules, taking into account relativistic, solvent, and vibrational corrections. The comparison with the experiment showed that the accuracy of the results obtained with the pecJ-2 basis set is almost the same as that provided by a significantly larger basis set, aug-cc-pVTZ-J, while that achieved with a very compact pecJ-1 basis set is only slightly inferior to the accuracy provided by the former.

Correlated ab initio calculations of one-bond 31 P77 Se and 31 P125 Te spin-spin coupling constants in a series of PSe and PTe systems accounting for relativistic effects (part 2)

Synthetic chalcogen-phosphorus chemistry permanently makes new challenges to computational Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, which has proven to be a powerful tool of structural analysis of chalcogen-phosphorus compounds. This paper reports on the calculations of one-bond ³¹ P⁷⁷ Se and ³¹ P¹²⁵ Te NMR spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs) in the series of phosphine selenides and tellurides. The applicability of the combined computational approach to the one-bond ³¹ P⁷⁷ Se and ³¹ P¹²⁵ Te SSCCs, incorporating the composite nonrelativistic scheme, built of high-accuracy correlated SOPPA (CC2) and Coupled Cluster Single and Double (CCSD) methods and the Density Functional Theory (DFT) relativistic corrections (four-component level), was examined against the experiment and another scheme based on the four-component relativistic DFT method. A special J-oriented basis set (acv3z-J) for selenium and tellurium atoms, developed previously by the authors, was used throughout the NMR calculations in this work at the first time. The proposed computational methodologies (combined and 'pure') provided a reasonable accuracy for ³¹ P⁷⁷ Se and ³¹ P¹²⁵ Te SSCCs against experimental data, characterizing by the mean absolute percentage errors of about 4% and 1%, and 12% and 8% for selenium and tellurium species, respectively. The present study reports typical relativistic corrections to ⁷⁷ Se³¹ P and ¹²⁵ Te³¹ P SSCCs, calculated within the four-component DFT formalism for a broad series of tertiary phosphine selenides and tellurides with different substituents at phosphorus.

Enhancing NMR Quantum Computation by Exploring Heavy Metal Complexes as Multiqubit Systems: A Theoretical Investigation

Assembled together with the most common qubits used in nuclear resonance magnetic (NMR) quantum computation experiments, spin-1/2 nuclei, such as ¹¹³Cd, ¹⁹⁹Hg, ¹²⁵Te, and ⁷⁷Se, could leverage the prospective scalable quantum computer architectures, enabling many and heteronuclear qubits for NMR quantum information processing (QIP) implementations. A computational design strategy for prescreening recently synthesized complexes of cadmium, mercury, tellurium, selenium, and phosphorus (called MRE complexes) as suitable qubit molecules for NMR QIP is reported. Chemical shifts and spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs) in five MRE complexes were examined using the spin-orbit zeroth order regular approximation (ZORA) at the density functional theory level and the four-component relativistic Dirac-Kohn-Sham approach. In particular, the influence of different conformers, basis sets, exchange-correlation functionals, and methods to treat the relativistic as well as solvent effects were studied. The differences in the chemical shifts and SSCCs between different low energy conformers of the studied complexes were found to be very small. The TZ2P basis set was found to be the optimum choice for the studied chemical shifts, while the TZ2P-J basis set was the best for the couplings studied in this work. The PBE0 exchange-correlation functional exhibited the best performance for the studied MRE complexes. The addition of solvent effects has not improved on the gas phase results in comparison to the experiment, with the exception of the phosphorus chemical shift. The use of MRE complexes as qubit molecules for NMR QIP could face the challenges in single qubit control and multiqubit operations. They exhibit chemical shifts appropriately dispersed, allowing qubit addressability and exceptionally large spin-spin couplings, which could reduce the time of quantum gate operations and likely preserve the coherence.

Recent advances in computational 31 P NMR: Part 1. Chemical shifts

This is the first part of two closely related reviews dealing with the computation of phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shifts in a wide series of organophosphorus compounds including complexes, clusters, and bioorganic phosphorus compounds. In particular, the analysis of the accuracy factors, such as substitution effects, solvent effects, vibrational corrections, and relativistic effects, is presented. This review is dedicated to the Full Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Professor Boris A. Trofimov in view of his invaluable contribution to the field of synthesis, nuclear magnetic resonance, and computation studies of organophosphorus compounds.

On the heavy atom on light atom relativistic effect in the NMR shielding constants of phosphine tellurides

The relativistic HALA effect has been shown to depend on the spatial deformation of the lone electron pairs of a heavy atom, as demonstrated for alkyl and alkene phosphine tellurides. It was found that HALA effect on phosphorous nuclear magnetic resonance shielding constant is strongly dependent on the spatial arrangements of light substituents on phosphorus, resulting in the deformation of the lone electron pairs of tellurium.

Four-component relativistic 31P NMR calculations for trans-platinum(ii) complexes: importance of the solvent and dynamics in spectral simulations

We report a combined experimental-theoretical study on the 31P NMR chemical shift for a number of trans-platinum(ii) complexes. Validity and reliability of the 31P NMR chemical shift calculations are examined by comparing with the experimental data. A successful computational protocol for the accurate prediction of the 31P NMR chemical shifts was established for trans-[PtCl2(dma)PPh3] (dma = dimethylamine) complexes. The reliability of the computed values is shown to be critically dependent on the level of relativistic effects (two-component vs. four component), choice of density functionals, dynamical averaging, and solvation effects. Snapshots obtained from ab initio molecular dynamics simulations were used to identify those solvent molecules which show the largest interactions with the platinum complex, through inspection by using the non-covalent interaction program. We observe satisfactory accuracy from the full four-component matrix Dirac-Kohn-Sham method (mDKS) based on the Dirac-Coulomb Hamiltonian, in conjunction with the KT2 density functional, and dynamical averaging with explicit solvent molecules.
