Flow-induced phase effects and compensation technique for slice-selective pulses

Measurements of venous oxygen saturation in the superior sagittal sinus using conventional 3D multiple gradient-echo MRI: Effects of flow velocity and acceleration

PURPOSE

This work investigates the effects of flow acceleration in the superior sagittal sinus on slice-dependent variations in venous oxygen saturation (SvO₂ ) estimations using susceptibility-based MR oximetry.

METHODS

Three-dimensional multiple gradient-echo images, with first-order flow compensation along the anterior-posterior readout direction for the first echo, were acquired twice from 15 healthy volunteers. For all slices, phases within the superior sagittal sinus were fitted using linear regression across four TEs to obtain the Pearson's correlation coefficients (PCCs), the largest of which corresponded to minimum acceleration influence. SvO₂ derived from odd echoes on this slice was used to assess interscan difference, and compared with the central 15th slice for slice-dependent difference, both using Bland-Altman analysis. Within-scan interslice SvO₂ consistency was examined versus PCC. Multislice-averaged SvO₂ values were then computed from slices with PCCs above a certain threshold.

RESULTS

Slice-dependent difference in SvO₂ varied from -16.2% to 21.5% at two SDs, in agreement with a recent report, and about twice larger than interscan differences for the automatically selected slice (-7.5% to 10.3%) and for the central 15th slice (-8.0% to 8.8%). For slices with PCCs higher than -0.98, interslice SvO₂ deviations were all found to be less than 5.0%. Multislice-averaged SvO₂ with PCCs higher than -0.98 further reduced interscan difference to -4.7% to 8.2%.

CONCLUSION

Slice-dependent variations in SvO₂ may partly be explained by the effects of flow acceleration. Our method may enable conventional 3D multiple gradient echo to be used for SvO₂ estimations in the presence of pulsatile flow.

Seed prioritized unwrapping (SPUN) for MR phase imaging

BACKGROUND

Region-growing-based phase unwrapping methods have the potential for lossless phase aliasing removal, but generally suffer from unwrapping error propagation associated with discontinuous phase and/or long calculation times. The tradeoff point between robustness and efficiency of phase unwrapping methods in the region-growing category requires improvement.

PURPOSE

To demonstrate an accurate, robust, and efficient region-growing phase unwrapping method for MR phase imaging applications.

STUDY TYPE

Prospective. SUBJECTS, PHANTOM: normal human subjects (10) / brain surgery patients (2) / water phantoms / computer simulation.

FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE

3 T/gradient echo sequences (2D and 3D).

ASSESSMENT

A seed prioritized unwrapping (SPUN) method was developed based on single-region growing, prioritizing only a portion (eg, 100 seeds or 1% seeds) of available seed voxels based on continuity quality during each region-growing iteration. Computer simulation, phantom, and in vivo brain and pelvis scans were performed. The error rates, seed percentages, and calculation times were recorded and reported. SPUN unwrapped phase images were visually evaluated and compared with Laplacian unwrapped results.

STATISTICAL TESTS

Monte Carlo simulation was performed on a 3D dipole phase model with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 1-9 dB, to obtain the mean and standard deviation of calculation error rates and calculation times.

RESULTS

Simulation revealed a very robust unwrapping performance of SPUN, reaching an error rate of <0.4% even with SNR as low as 1 dB. For all in vivo data, SPUN was able to robustly unwrap the phase images of modest SNR and complex morphology with visually minimal errors and fast calculation speed (eg, <4 min for 368 × 312 × 128 data) when using a proper seed priority number, eg, N_sp = 1 or 10 voxels for 2D and N_sp = 1% for 3D data.

DATA CONCLUSION

SPUN offers very robust and fast region-growing-based phase unwrapping, and does not require any tissue masking or segmentation, nor poses a limitation over imaging parameters.

Effects of slow flow on slice profile and NMR signal in fast imaging sequences

A computer program has been developed to evaluate the selective-slice profiles obtained in the steady state for fast gradient-echo imaging. Both spoiled and refocused gradient-echo pulse sequences have been considered. By numerically solving the Bloch equations modified for the effects of flow, for a three-dimensional volume of spins, for realistic RF excitations and linear gradient combinations, the program permits the combined effects of flow and imaging variables on the magnetization slice profile to be assessed quantitatively. We have found that the gradient pattern in gradient-echo pulse sequences is a significant factor for determining the steady-state slice profiles and the strength of the NMR signal from the flowing spins.

Velocity sensitivity of slice-selective excitation

The purpose of this study was to investigate how flow affects slice-selective excitation, particularly for radiofrequency (rf) pulses optimized for slice-selective excitation of stationary material. Simulation methods were used to calculate the slice profiles for material flowing at different velocities, using optimal flow compensation when appropriate. Four rf pulses of very different shapes were used in the simulation study: a 90 degrees linear-phase Shinnar-LeRoux pulse; a 90 degrees self-refocusing pulse; a minimum-phase Shinnar-LeRoux inversion pulse; and a SPINCALC inversion pulse. Slice profiles from simulations with a laminar flow model were compared with experimental studies for two different rf pulses using a clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) system. We found that, for a given rf pulse, the effect of flow on slice-selective excitation depends on the product of the selection gradient amplitude, the component of velocity in the slice selection direction, and the square of the rf pulse duration. The shapes of the slice profiles from the Shinnar-LeRoux pulses were relatively insensitive to velocity. However, the slice profiles from the self-refocusing pulse and the SPINCALC pulse were significantly degraded by velocity. Experimental slice profiles showed excellent agreement with simulation. In conclusion, our study demonstrates that slice-selective excitation can be significantly degraded by flow depending on the velocity, the gradient amplitude, and characteristics of the rf excitation pulse used. The results can aid in the design of rf pulses for slice-selective excitation of flowing material.

Phase-derivative analysis in MR angiography: reduced Venc dependency and improved vessel wall detection in laminar and disturbed flow

A problem of current MRA techniques is the inability to accurately depict the vascular anatomy, particularly in areas of disturbed flow. Various reasons, such as intravoxel phase dispersion, saturation, temporal variations, and maximum intensity projection (MIP) nonlinearity, cause a wrong delineation of vessel boundaries. A phase contrast (PC)-based postprocessing operation, the phase derivative (PhD), is introduced to detect phase fluctuations indicating flow. Two-dimensional and three-dimensional angiographic reconstruction algorithms are presented. Mathematical formulas are derived to predict the effect of sampling to flow profiles and the effect on the PhD of these profiles. Numerical, phantom, and preliminary in vivo experiments demonstrate that PhD images do not suffer from phase wraps and allow a velocity dynamic range extension only limited by a differential phase change. It is also shown that PhD MIPs produce higher signal-to-noise ratios than conventional PC angiograms and give a better impression of the anatomy of (stenotic) vessels and of their diameters for both laminar and disturbed flow.

MR imaging of flow through tortuous vessels: a numerical simulation

A novel computer simulation technique is presented that allows the calculation of images from Magnetic Resonance Angiography (MRA) studies of blood flow in realistic curving and branching two-dimensional vessel geometries. Fluid dynamic calculations provide flow streamlines through curved or branching vessels. MR simulations generate images for specific MR pulse sequence parameters. Simulations of steady flow in carotid bifurcation and carotid siphon geometries as imaged by a standard, flow-compensated, spoiled gradient echo sequence illustrate the major features seen in clinical time of flight MRA studies. The simulations provide insight into a number of artifacts encountered in MRA such as displacement artifacts, signal pile-up, truncation artifacts, and intravoxel phase dispersion.
