Intra-scan RF power amplifier drift correction

PURPOSE

The drift in radiofrequency (RF) power amplifiers (RFPAs) is assessed and several contributing factors are investigated. Two approaches for prospective correction of drift are proposed and their effectiveness is evaluated.

METHODS

RFPA drift assessment encompasses both intra-pulse and inter-pulse drift analyses. Scan protocols with varying flip angle (FA), RF length, and pulse repetition time (TR) are used to gauge the influence of these parameters on drift. Directional couplers (DICOs) monitor the forward waveforms of the RFPA outputs. DICOs data is stored for evaluation, allowing calculation of correction factors to adjust RFPAs' transmit voltage. Two correction methods, predictive and run-time, are employed: predictive correction necessitates a calibration scan, while run-time correction calculates factors during the ongoing scan.

RESULTS

RFPA drift is indeed influenced by the RF duty-cycle, and in the cases examined with a maximum duty-cycle of 66%, the potential drift is approximately 41% or 15%, depending on the specific RFPA revision. Notably, in low transmit voltage scenarios, FA has minimal impact on RFPA drift. The application of predictive and run-time drift correction techniques effectively reduces the average drift from 10.0% to less than 1%, resulting in enhanced MR signal stability.

CONCLUSION

Utilizing DICO recordings and implementing a feedback mechanism enable the prospective correction of RFPA drift. Having a calibration scan, predictive correction can be utilized with fewer complexity; for enhanced performance, a run-time approach can be employed.

A pulsed current-mode class-D low-voltage high-bandwidth power amplifier for portable NMR systems

Low-field NMR has seen growing interest in recent years, especially for portable applications. The lower homogeneity magnets used for portable applications require short RF pulses to ensure enough transmit bandwidth to excite the sample volume and also support short echo periods. Furthermore, the preferred use of a high-Q coil to improve signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) prolongs the pulse transients. Thus, at such low Larmor frequencies, the excitation pulse transients become comparable or longer than the pulse length, such that the transmit bandwidth begins to limit measurement SNR. This paper describes the design of a pulsed current-mode class-D power (PCMCD) transmitter that addresses this issue by generating high power in a tuned sample coil while maintaining short transients, thus resulting in high output bandwidth. The transmitter also uses a charge recycling mechanism to maximize power efficiency for RF train excitation, which also results in faster pulse repetition rate and reduces allowable echo time. Experimental results from a small form-factor PCMCD transmitter are presented. This design generates a peak RF power of 240 W into a 9.16 μH coil at 4 MHz while operating off a single 12 V power supply. NMR measurement results using the transmitter are also described, showing minimum achievable echo time of 70 μs and 25 μs depending on the transmitter mode of operation.

Multiple slot modules for high field magnetic resonance imaging array coils

PURPOSE

Mitigating coupling effects between coil elements represents a continuing challenge. Here, we present a 16-bowtie slot volume coil arranged in eight independent dual-slot modules without the use of any decoupling circuits.

METHODS

Two electrically short "bowtie" slot antennas were used to form a "module." A bowtie configuration was chosen because electromagnetic modeling results show that bowtie slots exhibit improved B 1 + P in $$ \frac{B_1^{+}}{\sqrt{P_{in}}} $$ efficiency when compared to thin rectangular slots. An eight-module volume coil was evaluated through electromagnetic modeling, bench tests, and MRI experiments at 4.7 T.

RESULTS

Bench tests indicate that worst-case coupling between modules did not exceed -14.5 dB. MR images demonstrate well-localized patterns about single excited modules confirming the low coupling between modules. Homogeneous MR images were acquired from a synthesized quadrature birdcage transmit mode. MRI experiments show that the RF power requirements for the proposed coil are 9.2 times more than a birdcage coil. Whereas from simulations performed to assess the proposed coil losses, the total power dissipated in the phantom was 1.1 times more for the birdcage. Simulation results at 7 T reveal an equivalent B₁ ⁺ homogeneity when compared with an eight-dipole coil.

CONCLUSION

Although exhibiting higher RF power requirements, as a transmit coil when the power availability is not a restriction, the inherently low coupling between electrically short slots should enable the use of many slot elements around the imaging volume. The slot module described in this paper should be useful in the design of multi-channel transmit coils.

Advancements in Gradient System Performance for Clinical and Research MRI

In magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), spatial field gradients are applied along each axis to encode the location of the nuclear spin in the frequency domain. During recent years, the development of new gradient technologies has been focused on the generation of stronger and faster gradient fields for imaging with higher spatial and temporal resolution. This benefits imaging methods, such as brain diffusion and functional MRI, and enables human imaging at ultra-high field MRI. In addition to improving gradient performance, new technologies have been presented to minimize peripheral nerve stimulation and gradient-related acoustic noise, both generated by the rapid switching of strong gradient fields. This review will provide a general background on the gradient system and update on the state-of-the-art gradient technology. EVIDENCE LEVEL: 5 TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 1.

A radiofrequency voltage-controlled current source for quantum spin manipulation

We present a wide-bandwidth, voltage-controlled current source that is easily integrated with radiofrequency magnetic field coils. Our design uses current feedback to compensate for the frequency-dependent impedance of a radiofrequency antenna. We are able to deliver peak currents greater than 100 mA over a 300 kHz to 54 MHz frequency span. The radiofrequency current source fits onto a printed circuit board smaller than 4 cm2 and consumes less than 1.3 W of power. It is suitable for use in deployable quantum sensors and nuclear magnetic resonance systems.

Eight-channel parallel transmit-receive system for 7 T MRI with optically controlled and monitored on-coil current-mode RF amplifiers

PURPOSE

To demonstrate a practical implementation of an eight-channel parallel-transmit system for brain imaging at 7 T based on on-coil amplifier technology.

METHODS

An eight-channel parallel transmit-receive system was built with optimized on-coil switch-mode current RF power amplifiers. The amplifiers were optically controlled from an eight-channel interface that was connected to a 7 T MRI scanner. The interface also optically received a down-converted version of the coil current sensed in each amplifier for monitoring and feedback adjustments.

RESULTS

Each on-coil amplifier delivered more than 100 W peak power and provided enough amplifier decoupling (<-15 dB) for the implemented eight-channel array configuration. Phantom and human images were acquired to demonstrate practical operation of this new technology in a 7 T MRI scanner.

CONCLUSION

Further development and improvement of previously demonstrated on-coil technology led to successful implementation of an eight-channel parallel-transmit system able to deliver strong B₁ fields for typical brain imaging applications. This is an important step forward toward implementation of on-coil RF amplification for high-field MRI.

Optically controlled on-coil amplifier with RF monitoring feedback

PURPOSE

To develop a new optically controlled on-coil amplifier that facilitates safe use of multi-channel radiofrequency (RF) transmission in MRI by real-time monitoring of signal phase and amplitude.

METHODS

Monitoring was carried out with a 4-channel prototype system by sensing, down sampling, digitizing, and optically transmitting the RF transmit signal to a remote PC to control the amplifiers. Performance was evaluated with benchtop and 7 T MRI experiments.

RESULTS

Monitored amplitude and phase were stable across repetitions and had standard deviations of 0.061 μT and 0.0073 rad, respectively. The feedback system allowed inter-channel phase and B₁ amplitude to be adjusted within two iterations. MRI experiments demonstrated the feasibility of this approach to perform safe and accurate multi-channel RF transmission and monitoring at high field.

CONCLUSION

We demonstrated a 4-channel transceiver system based on optically controlled on-coil amplifiers with RF signal monitoring and feedback control. The approach allows the safe and precise control of RF transmission fields, required to achieve uniform excitation at high field. High efficiency radiofrequency power amplifier module for parallel transmit arrays at 3 Tesla

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study is to develop an in-bore radiofrequency (RF) power amplifier (RFPA) module with high power efficiency and density for use in parallel transmit (pTX) arrays at 3 Tesla.

METHODS

The modules use a combination of current mode class D, class S, and class E amplifiers based on enhancement-mode gallium nitride-on-silicon field-effect transistors. Together the amplifiers implement envelope elimination and restoration to achieve amplitude modulation with high efficiency over a wide operating range. The static nonlinearity and power efficiency of the module were measured using pulsed RF measurements over a 37 dB dynamic range. Thermal performance was also measured with and without forced convection cooling.

RESULTS

The modules produces peak RF power up to 130 W with an overall efficiency of 85%. When producing 100 W RF pulses at a duty cycle of 10%, maximum junction temperatures did not exceed 80 °C, even without the use of heatsinks or forced convection.

CONCLUSION

The small size and low cost of the modules promise lower cost implementation of pTX systems compared with linear RFPAs located remotely. Further work must be done on control of the RF output in the presence of nonlinearities and coupling. Parallel transmission for ultrahigh-field imaging

The development of MRI systems operating at or above 7 T has provided researchers with a new window into the human body, yielding improved imaging speed, resolution and signal-to-noise ratio. In order to fully realise the potential of ultrahigh-field MRI, a range of technical hurdles must be overcome. The non-uniformity of the transmit field is one of such issues, as it leads to non-uniform images with spatially varying contrast. Parallel transmission (i.e. the use of multiple independent transmission channels) provides previously unavailable degrees of freedom that allow full spatial and temporal control of the radiofrequency (RF) fields. This review discusses the many ways in which these degrees of freedom can be used, ranging from making more uniform transmit fields to the design of subject-tailored RF pulses for both uniform excitation and spatial selection, and also the control of the specific absorption rate. © 2015 The Authors. W(h)ither human cardiac and body magnetic resonance at ultrahigh fields? technical advances, practical considerations, applications, and clinical opportunities

The objective of this study was to document and review advances and groundbreaking progress in cardiac and body MR at ultrahigh fields (UHF, B0 ≥ 7.0 T) with the goal to attract talent, clinical adopters, collaborations and resources to the biomedical and diagnostic imaging communities. This review surveys traits, advantages and challenges of cardiac and body MR at 7.0 T. The considerations run the gamut from technical advances to clinical opportunities. Key concepts, emerging technologies, practical considerations, frontier applications and future directions of UHF body and cardiac MR are provided. Examples of UHF cardiac and body imaging strategies are demonstrated. Their added value over the kindred counterparts at lower fields is explored along with an outline of research promises. The achievements of cardiac and body UHF-MR are powerful motivators and enablers, since extra speed, signal and imaging capabilities may be invested to overcome the fundamental constraints that continue to hamper traditional cardiac and body MR applications. If practical obstacles, concomitant physics effects and technical impediments can be overcome in equal measure, sophisticated cardiac and body UHF-MR will help to open the door to new MRI and MRS approaches for basic research and clinical science, with the lessons learned at 7.0 T being transferred into broad clinical use including diagnostics and therapy guiding at lower fields. Parallel transmit excitation at 1.5 T based on the minimization of a driving function for device heating

PURPOSE

To provide a rapid method to reduce the radiofrequency (RF) E-field coupling and consequent heating in long conductors in an interventional MRI (iMRI) setup.

METHODS

A driving function for device heating (W) was defined as the integration of the E-field along the direction of the wire and calculated through a quasistatic approximation. Based on this function, the phases of four independently controlled transmit channels were dynamically changed in a 1.5 T MRI scanner. During the different excitation configurations, the RF induced heating in a nitinol wire immersed in a saline phantom was measured by fiber-optic temperature sensing. Additionally, a minimization of W as a function of phase and amplitude values of the different channels and constrained by the homogeneity of the RF excitation field (B1) over a region of interest was proposed and its results tested on the benchtop. To analyze the validity of the proposed method, using a model of the array and phantom setup tested in the scanner, RF fields and SAR maps were calculated through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations. In addition to phantom experiments, RF induced heating of an active guidewire inserted in a swine was also evaluated.

RESULTS

In the phantom experiment, heating at the tip of the device was reduced by 92% when replacing the body coil by an optimized parallel transmit excitation with same nominal flip angle. In the benchtop, up to 90% heating reduction was measured when implementing the constrained minimization algorithm with the additional degree of freedom given by independent amplitude control. The computation of the optimum phase and amplitude values was executed in just 12 s using a standard CPU. The results of the FDTD simulations showed similar trend of the local SAR at the tip of the wire and measured temperature as well as to a quadratic function of W, confirming the validity of the quasistatic approach for the presented problem at 64 MHz. Imaging and heating reduction of the guidewire were successfully performed in vivo with the proposed hardware and phase control.

CONCLUSIONS

Phantom and in vivo data demonstrated that additional degrees of freedom in a parallel transmission system can be used to control RF induced heating in long conductors. A novel constrained optimization approach to reduce device heating was also presented that can be run in just few seconds and therefore could be added to an iMRI protocol to improve RF safety.

Optically controlled switch-mode current-source amplifiers for on-coil implementation in high-field parallel transmission

PURPOSE

We tested the feasibility of implementing parallel transmission (pTX) for high-field MRI using a radiofrequency (RF) amplifier design to be located on or in the immediate vicinity of an RF transmit coil.

METHOD

We designed a current-source switch-mode amplifier based on miniaturized, nonmagnetic electronics. Optical RF carrier and envelope signals to control the amplifier were derived, through a custom-built interface, from the RF source accessible in the scanner control. Amplifier performance was tested by benchtop measurements as well as with imaging at 7T (300 MHz) and 11.7 T (500 MHz). The ability to perform pTX was evaluated by measuring interchannel coupling and phase adjustment in a two-channel setup.

RESULTS

The amplifier delivered in excess of 44 W RF power and caused minimal interference with MRI. The interface derived accurate optical control signals with carrier frequencies ranging from 64 to 750 MHz. Decoupling better than 14 dB was obtained between two coil loops separated by only 1 cm. Application to MRI was demonstrated by acquiring artifact-free images at 7 T and 11.7 T.

CONCLUSION

We propose an optically controlled miniaturized RF amplifier for on-coil implementation at high fields that should facilitate implementation of high-density pTX arrays. Magn Reson Med 76:340-349, 2016. Published 2015. This article is a U.S. Government work and is in the public domain in the USA.

An eight-channel T/R head coil for parallel transmit MRI at 3T using ultra-low output impedance amplifiers

Parallel transmit is an emerging technology to address the technical challenges associated with MR imaging at high field strengths. When developing arrays for parallel transmit systems, one of the primary factors to be considered is the mechanism to manage coupling and create independently operating channels. Recent work has demonstrated the use of amplifiers to provide some or all of the channel-to-channel isolation, reducing the need for on-coil decoupling networks in a manner analogous to the use of isolation preamplifiers with receive coils. This paper discusses an eight-channel transmit/receive head array for use with an ultra-low output impedance (ULOI) parallel transmit system. The ULOI amplifiers eliminated the need for a complex lumped element network to decouple the eight-rung array. The design and construction details of the array are discussed in addition to the measurement considerations required for appropriately characterizing an array when using ULOI amplifiers. B1 maps and coupling matrices are used to verify the performance of the system.

Sparse parallel transmission on randomly perturbed spiral k-space trajectory

Combination of parallel transmission and sparse pulse is able to shorten the excitation by using both the coil sensitivity and sparse k-space, showing improved fast excitation capability over the use of parallel transmission alone. However, to design an optimal k-space trajectory for sparse parallel transmission is a challenging task. In this work, a randomly perturbed sparse k-space trajectory is designed by modifying the path of a spiral trajectory along the sparse k-space data, and the sparse parallel transmission RF pulses are subsequently designed based on this optimal trajectory. This method combines the parallel transmission and sparse spiral k-space trajectory, potentially to further reduce the RF transmission time. Bloch simulation of 90° excitation by using a four channel coil array is performed to demonstrate its feasibility. Excitation performance of the sparse parallel transmission technique at different reduction factors of 1, 2, and 4 is evaluated. For comparison, parallel excitation using regular spiral trajectory is performed. The passband errors of the excitation profiles of each transmission are calculated for quantitative assessment of the proposed excitation method.

Eight channel transmit array volume coil using on-coil radiofrequency current sources

BACKGROUND

At imaging frequencies associated with high-field MRI, the combined effects of increased load-coil interaction and shortened wavelength results in degradation of circular polarization and B1 field homogeneity in the imaging volume. Radio frequency (RF) shimming is known to mitigate the problem of B1 field inhomogeneity. Transmit arrays with well decoupled transmitting elements enable accurate B1 field pattern control using simple, non-iterative algorithms.

METHODS

An eight channel transmit array was constructed. Each channel consisted of a transmitting element driven by a dedicated on-coil RF current source. The coil current distributions of characteristic transverse electromagnetic (TEM) coil resonant modes were non-iteratively set up on each transmitting element and 3T MRI images of a mineral oil phantom were obtained.

RESULTS

B1 field patterns of several linear and quadrature TEM coil resonant modes that typically occur at different resonant frequencies were replicated at 128 MHz without having to retune the transmit array. The generated B1 field patterns agreed well with simulation in most cases.

CONCLUSIONS

Independent control of current amplitude and phase on each transmitting element was demonstrated. The transmit array with on-coil RF current sources enables B1 field shimming in a simple and predictable manner.

Multi-turn transmit coil to increase b1 efficiency in current source amplification

PURPOSE

A multi-turn transmit surface coil design was presented to improve B1 efficiency when used with current source amplification.

METHODS

Three different coil designs driven by an on-coil current-mode class-D amplifier with current envelope feedback were tested on the benchtop and through imaging in a 1.5 T scanner. Case temperature of the power field-effect transistor at the amplifier output stage was measured to evaluate heat dissipation for the different current levels and coil configurations. In addition, a lower power rated device was tested to exploit the potential gain in B1 obtained with the multi-turn coil.

RESULTS

As shown both on the benchtop and in a 1.5 T scanner, B1 was increased by almost 3-fold without increasing heat dissipation on the power device at the amplifier's output using a multi-turn surface coil. Similar gain was obtained when connecting a lower power rated field-effect transistor to the multi-turn coil.

CONCLUSION

In addition to reduce heat dissipation per B1 in the device, higher B1 per current efficiency allows the use of field-effect transistors with lower current ratings and lower port capacitances, which could improve the overall performance of the on-coil current source transmit system.
