Improved steering of the RF field of traveling wave MR with a multimode, coaxial waveguide

Subwavelength dielectric waveguide for efficient travelling-wave magnetic resonance imaging

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has diverse applications in physics, biology, and medicine. Uniform excitation of nuclei spins through circular-polarized transverse magnetic component of electromagnetic field is vital for obtaining unbiased tissue contrasts. However, achieving this in the electrically large human body poses a significant challenge, especially at ultra-high fields (UHF) with increased working frequencies (≥297 MHz). Canonical volume resonators struggle to meet this challenge, while radiative excitation methods like travelling-wave (TW) show promise but often suffer from inadequate excitation efficiency. Here, we introduce a new technique using a subwavelength dielectric waveguide insert that enhances both efficiency and homogeneity at 7 T. Through TE11-to-TM11 mode conversion, power focusing, wave impedance matching, and phase velocity matching, we achieved a 114% improvement in TW efficiency and mitigated the center-brightening effect. This fundamental advancement in TW MRI through effective wave manipulation could promote the electromagnetic design of UHF MRI systems.

Excitation and RF Field Control of a Human-Size 10.5-T MRI System

This paper presents an investigation of methods for improving homogeneity inside various dielectric phantoms situated in a 10.5 T human-sized MRI. The transmit B1 (B 1 + ) field is excited with a quadrature fed circular patch-probe and a 12 element capacitively-loaded microstrip array. Both simulations and measurements show improved homogeneity in a cylindrical water phantom, an inhomogeneous phantom (pineapple), and a NIST standard phantom. The simulations are performed using a full-wave finite-difference time-domain solver (Sim4Life) in order to find theB 1 + field distribution and compared to the gradient recalled echo image and efficiency result. For additional field uniformity, the wall electromagnetic boundary conditions are modified with a passive quadrifilar helix. Finally, these methods are applied in simulation to head imaging of an anatomically correct human body model (Duke, IT'IS Virtual Population) showing improved homogeneity and specific absorption rate for various excitations.

Combination of a multimode antenna and TIAMO for traveling-wave imaging at 9.4 Tesla

PURPOSE

To investigate the performance of a multimode antenna combined with time-interleaved acquisition of modes (TIAMO) for improved (1)H image homogeneity as compared to conventional traveling-wave imaging in the human brain at 9.4 Tesla (T).

METHODS

An adjustable three-port antenna was built to stimulate the propagation of three basic waveguide modes within a 9.4 T scanner bore. For TIAMO, two time-interleaved acquisitions using different linear combinations of these modes were optimized to achieve a homogeneous rooted sum-of-squares combination of their B1+ patterns ( B1,RSS+). The antenna's transmit and receive performance, as well as local specific absorption rate, were analyzed using experiments and numerical simulations.

RESULTS

The optimized TIAMO B1,RSS+ combination was superior to radiofrequency shimming. Across the entire brain, it improved the homogeneity of the excitation field by a factor of two and its maximum-to-minimum ratio by almost a factor of five as compared to the circularly polarized mode. The two-fold increase in "virtual" receive channels enhanced the parallel imaging performance and enabled the use of higher acceleration factors.

CONCLUSION

Despite the limited number of channels, a remote three-port antenna combined with TIAMO represents an easily implementable setup to achieve void-free (1)H images from the entire brain at 9.4 T, which can be used for anatomical localization and B0 shimming.
