Potential acceleration performance of a 256-channel whole-brain receive array at 7 T

A 128-channel receive array for cortical brain imaging at 7 T

PURPOSE

A 128-channel receive-only array for brain imaging at 7 T was simulated, designed, constructed, and tested within a high-performance head gradient designed for high-resolution functional imaging.

METHODS

The coil used a tight-fitting helmet geometry populated with 128 loop elements and preamplifiers to fit into a 39 cm diameter space inside a built-in gradient. The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and parallel imaging performance (1/g) were measured in vivo and simulated using electromagnetic modeling. The histogram of 1/g factors was analyzed to assess the range of performance. The array's performance was compared to the industry-standard 32-channel receive array and a 64-channel research array.

RESULTS

It was possible to construct the 128-channel array with body noise-dominated loops producing an average noise correlation of 5.4%. Measurements showed increased sensitivity compared with the 32-channel and 64-channel array through a combination of higher intrinsic SNR and g-factor improvements. For unaccelerated imaging, the 128-channel array showed SNR gains of 17.6% and 9.3% compared to the 32-channel and 64-channel array, respectively, at the center of the brain and 42% and 18% higher SNR in the peripheral brain regions including the cortex. For R = 5 accelerated imaging, these gains were 44.2% and 24.3% at the brain center and 86.7% and 48.7% in the cortex. The 1/g-factor histograms show both an improved mean and a tighter distribution by increasing the channel count, with both effects becoming more pronounced at higher accelerations.

CONCLUSION

The experimental results confirm that increasing the channel count to 128 channels is beneficial for 7T brain imaging, both for increasing SNR in peripheral brain regions and for accelerated imaging.

3D FRONSAC with PSF reconstruction

PURPOSE

This study extends the Fast ROtary Nonlinear Spatial ACquisition (FRONSAC) method to include 3D acquisitions and reconstructions. It uses a transform domain reconstruction which is needed to make 3D reconstructions practical and provides new insights into how parallel imaging performance is enhanced by FRONSAC encoding.

METHODS

This work developed the first examples of FRONSAC incorporated into a 3D acquisition. 3D FRONSAC was tested on human subjects with both simple gradient echo and MPRAGE Cartesian acquisitions. The quality of the 3D FRONSAC images was evaluated using structural similarity index measure (SSIM), and normalized root mean square error (NRMSE).

RESULTS

FRONSAC encoding did not significantly modify the contrast obtained in either sequence, but it substantially improves the image quality of undersampled reconstruction. FRONSAC images have reduced undersampling ghosts and consistently improved SSIM and NRMSE.

CONCLUSIONS

Acquisition and reconstruction of 3D FRONSAC images are feasible, and the additional FRONSAC encoding improves image quality in highly undersampled images.

A vision of 14 T MR for fundamental and clinical science

OBJECTIVE

We outline our vision for a 14 Tesla MR system. This comprises a novel whole-body magnet design utilizing high temperature superconductor; a console and associated electronic equipment; an optimized radiofrequency coil setup for proton measurement in the brain, which also has a local shim capability; and a high-performance gradient set.

RESEARCH FIELDS

The 14 Tesla system can be considered a 'mesocope': a device capable of measuring on biologically relevant scales. In neuroscience the increased spatial resolution will anatomically resolve all layers of the cortex, cerebellum, subcortical structures, and inner nuclei. Spectroscopic imaging will simultaneously measure excitatory and inhibitory activity, characterizing the excitation/inhibition balance of neural circuits. In medical research (including brain disorders) we will visualize fine-grained patterns of structural abnormalities and relate these changes to functional and molecular changes. The significantly increased spectral resolution will make it possible to detect (dynamic changes in) individual metabolites associated with pathological pathways including molecular interactions and dynamic disease processes.

CONCLUSIONS

The 14 Tesla system will offer new perspectives in neuroscience and fundamental research. We anticipate that this initiative will usher in a new era of ultra-high-field MR.

COnstrained Reference frame diffusion TEnsor Correlation Spectroscopic (CORTECS) MRI: A practical framework for high-resolution diffusion tensor distribution imaging

High-resolution imaging studies have consistently shown that in cortical tissue water diffuses preferentially along radial and tangential orientations with respect to the cortical surface, in agreement with histology. These dominant orientations do not change significantly even if the relative contributions from microscopic water pools to the net voxel signal vary across experiments that use different diffusion times, b-values, TEs, and TRs. With this in mind, we propose a practical new framework for imaging non-parametric diffusion tensor distributions (DTDs) by constraining the microscopic diffusion tensors of the DTD to be diagonalized using the same orthonormal reference frame of the mesoscopic voxel. In each voxel, the constrained DTD (cDTD) is completely determined by the correlation spectrum of the microscopic principal diffusivities associated with the axes of the voxel reference frame. Consequently, all cDTDs are inherently limited to the domain of positive definite tensors and can be reconstructed efficiently using Inverse Laplace Transform methods. Moreover, the cDTD reconstruction can be performed using only data acquired efficiently with single diffusion encoding, although it also supports datasets with multiple diffusion encoding. In tissues with a well-defined architecture, such as the cortex, we can further constrain the cDTD to contain only cylindrically symmetric diffusion tensors and measure the 2D correlation spectra of principal diffusivities along the radial and tangential orientation with respect to the cortical surface. To demonstrate this framework, we perform numerical simulations and analyze high-resolution dMRI data from a fixed macaque monkey brain. We estimate 2D cDTDs in the cortex and derive, in each voxel, the marginal distributions of the microscopic principal diffusivities, the corresponding distributions of the microscopic fractional anisotropies and mean diffusivities along with their 2D correlation spectra to quantify the cDTD shape-size characteristics. Signal components corresponding to specific bands in these cDTD-derived spectra show high specificity to cortical laminar structures observed with histology. Our framework drastically simplifies the measurement of non-parametric DTDs in high-resolution datasets with mesoscopic voxel sizes much smaller than the radius of curvature of the underlying anatomy, e.g., cortical surface, and can be applied retrospectively to analyze existing diffusion MRI data from fixed cortical tissues.

A Monopole and Dipole Hybrid Antenna Array for Human Brain Imaging at 10.5 Tesla

In this letter, we evaluate antenna designs for ultra-high frequency and field (UHF) human brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at 10.5 tesla (T). Although MRI at such UHF is expected to provide major signal-to-noise gains, the frequency of interest, 447 MHz, presents us with challenges regarding improved B₁ ⁺ efficiency, image homogeneity, specific absorption rate (SAR), and antenna element decoupling for array configurations. To address these challenges, we propose the use of both monopole and dipole antennas in a novel hybrid configuration, which we refer to as a mono-dipole hybrid antenna (MDH) array. Compared to an 8-channel dipole antenna array of the same dimensions, the 8-channel MDH array showed an improvement in decoupling between adjacent array channels, as well as ~18% higher B₁ ⁺ and SAR efficiency near the central region of the phantom based on simulation and experiment. However, the performances of the MDH and dipole antenna arrays were overall similar when evaluating a human model in terms of peak B₁ ⁺ efficiency, 10 g SAR, and SAR efficiency. Finally, the concept of an MDH array showed an advantage in improved decoupling, SAR, and B₁ ⁺ near the superior region of the brain for human brain imaging.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging responses during perceptual decision-making at 3 and 7 T in human cortex, striatum, and brainstem

While functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) at ultra‐high field (7 T) promises a general increase in sensitivity compared to lower field strengths, the benefits may be most pronounced for specific applications. The current study aimed to evaluate the relative benefit of 7 over 3 T fMRI for the assessment of responses evoked in different brain regions by a well‐controlled cognitive task. At 3 and 7 T, the same participants made challenging perceptual decisions about visual motion combined with monetary rewards for correct choices. Previous work on this task has extensively characterized the underlying cognitive computations and single‐cell responses in cortical and subcortical structures. We quantified the evoked fMRI responses in extrastriate visual cortical areas, the striatum, and the brainstem during the decision interval and the post‐feedback interval of the task. The dependence of response amplitudes on field strength during the decision interval differed between cortical, striatal, and brainstem regions, with a generally bigger 7 versus 3 T benefit in subcortical structures. We also found stronger responses during relatively easier than harder decisions at 7 T for dopaminergic midbrain nuclei, in line with reward expectation. Our results demonstrate the potential of 7 T fMRI for illuminating the contribution of small brainstem nuclei to the orchestration of cognitive computations in the human brain.

A local multi-transmit coil combined with a high-density receive array for cerebellar fMRI at 7 T

The human cerebellum is involved in a wide array of functions, ranging from motor control to cognitive control, and as such is of great neuroscientific interest. However, its function is underexplored in vivo, due to its small size, its dense structure and its placement at the bottom of the brain, where transmit and receive fields are suboptimal. In this study, we combined two dense coil arrays of 16 small surface receive elements each with a transmit array of three antenna elements to improve BOLD sensitivity in the human cerebellum at 7 T. Our results showed improved B₁⁺ and SNR close to the surface as well as g-factor gains compared with a commercial coil designed for whole-head imaging. This resulted in improved signal stability and large gains in the spatial extent of the activation close to the surface (<3.5 cm), while good performance was retained deeper in the cerebellum. Modulating the phase of the transmit elements of the head coil to constructively interfere in the cerebellum improved the B₁⁺ , resulting in a temporal SNR gain. Overall, our results show that a dedicated transmit array along with the SNR gains of surface coil arrays can improve cerebellar imaging, at the cost of a decreased field of view and increased signal inhomogeneity.

No need to detune transmitters in 32-channel receiver arrays at 7 T

Ultrahigh field magnetic resonance imaging facilitates high spatiotemporal resolution that benefits from increasing the number of receiver elements. Because high-density receiver arrays have a relatively small element size compared with the transmitter, a side effect is that such setups cause low flux coupling between the transmitter and receiver. Moreover, when transmitters are designed in a multitransmit configuration, their relative size is much smaller than the sample, reducing coupling to the sample and thereby potentially also the coupling to the receivers. Transmitters are traditionally detuned during reception. In this study, we investigate, for a 32-channel receiver head array at 7 T, if transmitter detuning of a quadrature birdcage or of an eight-channel transmit coil can be omitted without substantially sacrificing signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). The transmit elements are operated once with and once without detuning and, in the latter, the received signals are either merged with the array or excluded for image reconstruction. For each of the three measurements, SNR and 1/g-factor maps are investigated. The tuning of the quadrature and eight-channel transmit coils during signal reception introduced a 10.1% and 6.5% penalty in SNR, respectively, relative to the SNR received with detuned transmitters. When also incorporating the signal of the transmit coils, the SNR was regained to 98.5% or 101.4% for the quadrature and eight-channel coil, respectively, relative to the detuned transmitters, while the 1/g-factor maps improved slightly. For the 32-channel receive coil used the SNR penalty can become negligible when omitting detuning of the transmit coils. This not only simplifies transmit coil designs, potentially increasing their efficiency, but also enables the transmitters to be used as receivers in parallel to the receiver array, thus increasing parallel imaging performance.

New acquisition techniques and their prospects for the achievable resolution of fMRI

This work reviews recent advances in technologies for functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of the human brain and highlights the push for higher functional specificity based on increased spatial resolution and specific MR contrasts to reveal previously undetectable functional properties of small-scale cortical structures. We discuss how the combination of MR hardware, advanced acquisition techniques and various MR contrast mechanisms have enabled recent progress in functional neuroimaging. However, these advanced fMRI practices have only been applied to a handful of neuroscience questions to date, with the majority of the neuroscience community still using conventional imaging techniques. We thus discuss upcoming challenges and possibilities for fMRI technology development in human neuroscience. We hope that readers interested in functional brain imaging acquire an understanding of current and novel developments and potential future applications, even if they don't have a background in MR physics or engineering. We summarize the capabilities of standard fMRI acquisition schemes with pointers to relevant literature and comprehensive reviews and introduce more recent developments.

Methodological Considerations for Neuroimaging in Deep Brain Stimulation of the Subthalamic Nucleus in Parkinson's Disease Patients

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus is a neurosurgical intervention for Parkinson's disease patients who no longer appropriately respond to drug treatments. A small fraction of patients will fail to respond to DBS, develop psychiatric and cognitive side-effects, or incur surgery-related complications such as infections and hemorrhagic events. In these cases, DBS may require recalibration, reimplantation, or removal. These negative responses to treatment can partly be attributed to suboptimal pre-operative planning procedures via direct targeting through low-field and low-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). One solution for increasing the success and efficacy of DBS is to optimize preoperative planning procedures via sophisticated neuroimaging techniques such as high-resolution MRI and higher field strengths to improve visualization of DBS targets and vasculature. We discuss targeting approaches, MRI acquisition, parameters, and post-acquisition analyses. Additionally, we highlight a number of approaches including the use of ultra-high field (UHF) MRI to overcome limitations of standard settings. There is a trade-off between spatial resolution, motion artifacts, and acquisition time, which could potentially be dissolved through the use of UHF-MRI. Image registration, correction, and post-processing techniques may require combined expertise of traditional radiologists, clinicians, and fundamental researchers. The optimization of pre-operative planning with MRI can therefore be best achieved through direct collaboration between researchers and clinicians.

Over-overlapped loop arrays: A numerical study

Arrays of coils are commonly used in MRI both for reception and in parallel transmission to alleviate radiofrequency field inhomogeneities at high fields. Most designs typically overlap loop elements by a critical area (approximately 10%) to minimize mutual inductive couplings. With this geometrical constraint, loop sizes have to be reduced to accommodate large numbers of coils for a given coverage. However, the contribution of coil noise to total noise increases as each coil size decreases, which reduces overall signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), especially in deeper regions of the sample volume. Here we propose arrays designs using elements that overlap much more (over-overlapped), and using numerical calculations we investigate their performance compared to two kinds of conventionally overlapped arrays (one with the same coil size but smaller coil number, and one with the same coil number but smaller coil size). Our simulation results show that the over-overlapped array can considerably increase the central SNR when coil noise dominates.

Pushing functional MRI spatial and temporal resolution further: High-density receive arrays combined with shot-selective 2D CAIPIRINHA for 3D echo-planar imaging at 7 T

To be able to examine dynamic and detailed brain functions, the spatial and temporal resolution of 7 T MRI needs to improve. In this study, it was investigated whether submillimeter multishot 3D EPI fMRI scans, acquired with high-density receive arrays, can benefit from a 2D CAIPIRINHA sampling pattern, in terms of noise amplification (g-factor), temporal SNR and fMRI sensitivity. High-density receive arrays were combined with a shot-selective 2D CAIPIRINHA implementation for multishot 3D EPI sequences at 7 T. In this implementation, in contrast to conventional inclusion of extra k_z gradient blips, specific EPI shots are left out to create a CAIPIRINHA shift and reduction of scan time. First, the implementation of the CAIPIRINHA sequence was evaluated with a standard receive setup by acquiring submillimeter whole brain T₂ *-weighted anatomy images. Second, the CAIPIRINHA sequence was combined with high-density receive arrays to push the temporal resolution of submillimeter 3D EPI fMRI scans of the visual cortex. Results show that the shot-selective 2D CAIPIRINHA sequence enables a reduction in scan time for 0.5 mm isotropic 3D EPI T₂ *-weighted anatomy scans by a factor of 4 compared with earlier reports. The use of the 2D CAIPIRINHA implementation in combination with high-density receive arrays, enhances the image quality of submillimeter 3D EPI scans of the visual cortex at high acceleration as compared to conventional SENSE. Both the g-factor and temporal SNR improved, resulting in a method that is more sensitive to the fMRI signal. Using this method, it is possible to acquire submillimeter single volume 3D EPI scans of the visual cortex in a subsecond timeframe. Overall, high-density receive arrays in combination with shot-selective 2D CAIPIRINHA for 3D EPI scans prove to be valuable for reducing the scan time of submillimeter MRI acquisitions.

Brain imaging with improved acceleration and SNR at 7 Tesla obtained with 64-channel receive array

PURPOSE

Despite the clear synergy between high channel counts in a receive array and magnetic fields ≥ 7 Tesla, to date such systems have been restricted to a maximum of 32 channels. Here, we examine SNR gains at 7 Tesla in unaccelerated and accelerated images with a 64-receive channel (64Rx) RF coil.

METHODS

A 64Rx coil was built using circular loops tiled in 2 separable sections of a close-fitting form; custom designed preamplifier boards were integrated into each coil element. A 16-channel transmitter arranged in 2 rows along the z-axis was employed. The performance of the 64Rx array was experimentally compared to that of an industry-standard 32-channel receive (32Rx) array for SNR in unaccelerated images and for noise amplification under parallel imaging.

RESULTS

SNR gains were observed in the periphery but not in the center of the brain in unaccelerated imaging compared to the 32Rx coil. With either 1D or 2D undersampling of k-space, or with slice acceleration together with 1D undersampling of k-space, significant reductions in g-factor noise were observed throughout the brain, yielding effective gains in SNR in the entire brain compared to the 32Rx coil. Task-based FMRI data with 12-fold 2D (slice and phase-encode) acceleration yielded excellent quality functional maps with the 64Rx coil but was significantly beyond the capabilities of the 32Rx coil.

CONCLUSION

The results confirm the expectations from modeling studies and demonstrate that whole-brain studies with up to 16-fold, 2D acceleration would be feasible with the 64Rx coil.

Potential acceleration performance of a 256-channel whole-brain receive array at 7 T

Purpose

Assess the potential gain in acceleration performance of a 256‐channel versus 32‐channel receive coil array at 7 T in combination with a 2D CAIPIRINHA sequence for 3D data sets.

Methods

A 256‐channel receive setup was simulated by placing 2 small 16‐channel high‐density receive arrays at 2 × 8 different locations on the head of healthy participants. Multiple consecutive measurements were performed and coil sensitivity maps were combined to form a complete 256‐channel data set. This setup was compared with a standard 32‐channel head coil, in terms of SNR, noise correlation, and acceleration performance (g‐factor).

Results

In the periphery of the brain, the receive SNR was on average a factor 1.5 higher (ranging up to a factor 2.7 higher) than the 32‐channel coil; in the center of the brain the SNR was comparable or lower, depending on the size of the region of interest, with a factor 1.0 on average (ranging from 0.7 up to a factor of 1.6). The average noise correlation between coil elements was 3% for the 256‐channel coil, and 5% for the 32‐channel coil. At acceptable g‐factors (< 2), the achievable acceleration factor using SENSE and 2D CAIPIRINHA was 24 and 28, respectively, versus 9 and 12 for the 32‐channel coil.

Conclusion

The receive performance of the simulated 256 channel array was better than the 32‐channel reference. Combined with 2D CAIPIRINHA, a peak acceleration factor of 28 was assessed, showing great potential for high‐density receive arrays.
