A multi-inversion multi-echo spin and gradient echo echo planar imaging sequence with low image distortion for rapid quantitative parameter mapping and synthetic image contrasts

Simultaneous Multiparameter Mapping of the Liver in a Single Breath-Hold or Respiratory-Triggered Acquisition Using Multi-Inversion Spin and Gradient Echo MRI

BACKGROUND

Quantitative parametric mapping is an increasingly important tool for noninvasive assessment of chronic liver disease. Conventional parametric mapping techniques require multiple breath-held acquisitions and provide limited anatomic coverage.

PURPOSE

To investigate a multi-inversion spin and gradient echo (MI-SAGE) technique for simultaneous estimation of T1, T2, and T2* of the liver.

STUDY TYPE

Prospective.

SUBJECTS

Sixteen research participants, both adult and pediatric (age 17.5 ± 4.6 years, eight male), with and without known liver disease (seven asymptomatic healthy controls, two fibrotic liver disease, five steatotic liver disease, and two fibrotic and steatotic liver disease).

FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE

1.5 T, single breath-hold and respiratory triggered MI-SAGE, breath-hold modified Look-Locker inversion recovery (MOLLI, T1 mapping), breath-hold gradient and spin echo (GRASE, T2 mapping), and multiple gradient echo (mGRE, T2* mapping) sequences.

ASSESSMENT

Agreement between hepatic T1, T2, and T2* estimated using MI-SAGE and conventional parametric mapping sequences was evaluated. Repeatability and reproducibility of MI-SAGE were evaluated using a same-session acquisition and second-session acquisition.

STATISTICAL TESTS

Bland-Altman analysis with bias assessment and limits of agreement (LOA) and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC).

RESULTS

Hepatic T1, T2, and T2* estimates obtained using the MI-SAGE technique had mean biases of 72 (LOA: -22 to 166) msec, -3 (LOA: -10 to 5) msec, and 2 (LOA: -5 to 8) msec (single breath-hold) and 36 (LOA: -43 to 120) msec, -3 (LOA: -17 to 11) msec, and 4 (LOA: -3 to 11) msec (respiratory triggered), respectively, in comparison to conventional acquisitions using MOLLI, GRASE, and mGRE. All MI-SAGE estimates had strong repeatability and reproducibility (ICC > 0.72).

DATA CONCLUSION

Hepatic T1, T2, and T2* estimates obtained using an MI-SAGE technique were comparable to conventional methods, although there was a 12%/6% for breath-hold/respiratory triggered underestimation of T1 values compared to MOLLI. Both respiratory triggered and breath-hold MI-SAGE parameter maps demonstrated strong repeatability and reproducibility.

Simultaneous T1, T2 and T2⁎ mapping of the liver with multi-shot MI-SAGE

PURPOSE

To apply multi-shot high-resolution multi inversion spin and gradient echo (MI-SAGE) acquisition for simultaneous liver T1, T2 and T2* mapping.

METHODS

Inversion prepared spin- and gradient-echo EPI was developed with ascending slice order across measurements for efficient acquisition with T1, T2, and T2⁎ weighting. Multi-shot EPI was also implemented to minimize distortion and blurring while enabling high in-plane resolution. A dictionary-matching approach was used to fit the images to quantitative parameter maps, which were compared to T1 measured by modified Look-Locker (MOLLI), T1 measured by variable flip angle (VFA), T2 measured by multiple echo time-based Half Fourier Single-shot Turbo spin-Echo (HASTE), T2 measured by radial turbo-spin-echo (rTSE) and T2⁎ measured by multiple gradient echo (MGRE) sequences.

RESULTS

The multi-shot variant of the sequence achieved higher in-plane resolution of 1.7 × 1.7 mm2 with good image quality in 28 s. Derived quantitative maps showed comparable values to conventional mapping methods. As measured in phantom and in vivo, MOLLI, MESE and MGRE give closest values to MISAGE. VFA, HASTE and rTSE show obvious overestimation.

CONCLUSIONS

The proposed multi-shot inversion prepared spin- and gradient-echo EPI sequence allows for high-resolution quantitative T1, T2 and T2 liver tissue characterization in a single breath-hold scan.

Primary Multiparametric Quantitative Brain MRI: State-of-the-Art Relaxometric and Proton Density Mapping Techniques

This review on brain multiparametric quantitative MRI (MP-qMRI) focuses on the primary subset of quantitative MRI (qMRI) parameters that represent the mobile ("free") and bound ("motion-restricted") proton pools. Such primary parameters are the proton densities, relaxation times, and magnetization transfer parameters. Diffusion qMRI is also included because of its wide implementation in complete clinical MP-qMRI application. MP-qMRI advances were reviewed over the past 2 decades, with substantial progress observed toward accelerating image acquisition and increasing mapping accuracy. Areas that need further investigation and refinement are identified as follows: (a) the biologic underpinnings of qMRI parameter values and their changes with age and/or disease and (b) the theoretical limitations implicitly built into most qMRI mapping algorithms that do not distinguish between the different spatial scales of voxels versus spin packets, the central physical object of the Bloch theory. With rapidly improving image processing techniques and continuous advances in computer hardware, MP-qMRI has the potential for implementation in a wide range of clinical applications. Currently, three emerging MP-qMRI applications are synthetic MRI, macrostructural qMRI, and microstructural tissue modeling.

Style Transfer of Chinese Art Works Based on Dual Channel Deep Learning Model

Aiming at the problems of style loss and lack of content in the style transfer of Chinese art works, this paper puts forward the style transfer technology of Chinese art works based on the dual channel deep learning model. On the basis of clarifying the technical principle of style transfer of art works, the image of art works is controlled and transformed based on the u-net network. The incomplete information in the restored image is filled, and the multiscale classification feature is used to calculate the color feature data items in the image. The sensitivity coefficient of color difference is calculated by using constraints, and the overlapping color discrimination and image segmentation of art images are realized. Poisson image editing is used to constrain the image spatial gradient to realize the style migration of art works. The experimental results show that this method can effectively avoid the problems of content error, distortion, and distortion in the process of art style migration, and has a better style migration effect.

Mapping astrogliosis in the individual human brain using multidimensional MRI

There are currently no non-invasive imaging methods available for astrogliosis assessment or mapping in the central nervous system despite its essential role in the response to many disease states, such as infarcts, neurodegenerative conditions, traumatic brain injury and infection. Multidimensional MRI is an increasingly employed imaging modality that maximizes the amount of encoded chemical and microstructural information by probing relaxation (T1 and T2) and diffusion mechanisms simultaneously. Here, we harness the exquisite sensitivity of this imagining modality to derive a signature of astrogliosis and disentangle it from normative brain at the individual level using machine learning. We investigated ex vivo cerebral cortical tissue specimens derived from seven subjects who sustained blast-induced injuries, which resulted in scar-border forming astrogliosis without being accompanied by other types of neuropathological abnormality, and from seven control brain donors. By performing a combined post-mortem radiology and histopathology correlation study we found that astrogliosis induces microstructural and chemical changes that are robustly detected with multidimensional MRI, and which can be attributed to astrogliosis because no axonal damage, demyelination or tauopathy were histologically observed in any of the cases in the study. Importantly, we showed that no one-dimensional T1, T2 or diffusion MRI measurement can disentangle the microscopic alterations caused by this neuropathology. Based on these findings, we developed a within-subject anomaly detection procedure that generates MRI-based astrogliosis biomarker maps ex vivo, which were significantly and strongly correlated with co-registered histological images of increased glial fibrillary acidic protein deposition (r = 0.856, P < 0.0001; r = 0.789, P < 0.0001; r = 0.793, P < 0.0001, for diffusion-T2, diffusion-T1 and T1-T2 multidimensional data sets, respectively). Our findings elucidate the underpinning of MRI signal response from astrogliosis, and the demonstrated high spatial sensitivity and specificity in detecting reactive astrocytes at the individual level, and if reproduced in vivo, will significantly impact neuroimaging studies of injury, disease, repair and aging, in which astrogliosis has so far been an invisible process radiologically.

Development of a novel 10-echo multi-contrast sequence based on EPIK to deliver simultaneous quantification of T2 and T2 * with application to oxygen extraction fraction

PURPOSE

The simultaneous quantification of T₂ and T₂ * maps based on fast sequences for combined GE and SE acquisition has rekindled research and clinical interest by offering a wide range of attractive applications, e.g., dynamic tracking of oxygen extraction fraction (OEF). However, previously published methods based on EPI-readouts have been hindered by resolution and the number of acquired echoes.

METHODS

This work presents a novel 10-echo GE-SE EPIK (EPI with keyhole) sequence for the rapid quantification of T₂ '. T₂ /T₂ * maps from the GE-SE EPIK sequence were validated using three phantoms and 15 volunteers at 3T. The incorporation of a sliding window approach, combined with the full sampling of the k-space center inherent to EPIK, enables a high effective temporal resolution. That is, for an eight-slice breath-hold experiment, a temporal sampling rate of eight reconstructed slices per 1.1 s.

RESULTS

In comparison with repeated single-echo SE, multi-echo GE, and spectroscopy methods, the GE-SE EPIK sequence shows good agreement in quantifying T₂ /T₂ * values, while the gray matter/white matter separation yielded the expected contrast differentiation. The OEF was calculated with a view to an initial application with clinical relevance, producing results comparable to those in the literature and with good sensitivity in breath-hold experiments.

CONCLUSIONS

GE-SE EPIK provides increased resolution and more echoes, including two SEs, than comparable sequences. Moreover, GE-SE EPIK achieves this within an acquisition time of 57 s for 20 slices (matrix size = 128×128; FOV = 24 cm) and with a reasonably short TE for the final echo (114 ms). The sequence can dynamically track OEF changes in a breath-hold experiment.

Blip up-down acquisition for spin- and gradient-echo imaging (BUDA-SAGE) with self-supervised denoising enables efficient T2 , T2 *, para- and dia-magnetic susceptibility mapping

PURPOSE

To rapidly obtain high resolution T₂ , T₂ *, and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) source separation maps with whole-brain coverage and high geometric fidelity.

METHODS

We propose Blip Up-Down Acquisition for Spin And Gradient Echo imaging (BUDA-SAGE), an efficient EPI sequence for quantitative mapping. The acquisition includes multiple T₂ *-, T₂ '-, and T₂ -weighted contrasts. We alternate the phase-encoding polarities across the interleaved shots in this multi-shot navigator-free acquisition. A field map estimated from interim reconstructions was incorporated into the joint multi-shot EPI reconstruction with a structured low rank constraint to eliminate distortion. A self-supervised neural network (NN), MR-Self2Self (MR-S2S), was used to perform denoising to boost SNR. Using Slider encoding allowed us to reach 1 mm isotropic resolution by performing super-resolution reconstruction on volumes acquired with 2 mm slice thickness. Quantitative T₂ (=1/R₂ ) and T₂ * (=1/R₂ *) maps were obtained using Bloch dictionary matching on the reconstructed echoes. QSM was estimated using nonlinear dipole inversion on the gradient echoes. Starting from the estimated R₂ /R₂ * maps, R₂ ' information was derived and used in source separation QSM reconstruction, which provided additional para- and dia-magnetic susceptibility maps.

RESULTS

In vivo results demonstrate the ability of BUDA-SAGE to provide whole-brain, distortion-free, high-resolution, multi-contrast images and quantitative T₂ /T₂ * maps, as well as yielding para- and dia-magnetic susceptibility maps. Estimated quantitative maps showed comparable values to conventional mapping methods in phantom and in vivo measurements.

CONCLUSION

BUDA-SAGE acquisition with self-supervised denoising and Slider encoding enables rapid, distortion-free, whole-brain T₂ /T₂ * mapping at 1 mm isotropic resolution under 90 s.

Recent Advances in Radio-Frequency Coil Technologies: Flexible, Wireless, and Integrated Coil Arrays

Radio-frequency (RF) coils are to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners what eyes are to the human body. Because of their critical importance, there have been constant innovations driving the rapid development of RF coil technologies. Over the past four decades, the breadth and depth of the RF coil technology evolution have far exceeded the space allowed for this review article. However, these past developments have laid the very foundation on which some of the recent technical breakthroughs are built upon. Here, we narrow our focus on some of the most recent RF coil advances, specifically, on flexible, wireless, and integrated coil arrays. To provide a detailed review, we discuss the theoretical underpinnings, experimental implementations, promising results, as well as future outlooks covering these exciting topics. These recent innovations have greatly improved patient comfort and ease of scan, while also increasing the signal-to-noise ratio, image resolution, temporal throughput, and diagnostic and treatment accuracy. Together with advances in other MRI subfields, they will undoubtedly continue to drive the field forward and lead us to an ever more exciting future. Multidimensional MRI for Characterization of Subtle Axonal Injury Accelerated Using an Adaptive Nonlocal Multispectral Filter

Multidimensional MRI is an emerging approach that simultaneously encodes water relaxation (T₁ and T₂) and mobility (diffusion) and replaces voxel-averaged values with subvoxel distributions of those MR properties. While conventional (i.e., voxel-averaged) MRI methods cannot adequately quantify the microscopic heterogeneity of biological tissue, using subvoxel information allows to selectively map a specific T₁-T₂-diffusion spectral range that corresponds to a group of tissue elements. The major obstacle to the adoption of rich, multidimensional MRI protocols for diagnostic or monitoring purposes is the prolonged scan time. Our main goal in the present study is to evaluate the performance of a nonlocal estimation of multispectral magnitudes (NESMA) filter on reduced datasets to limit the total acquisition time required for reliable multidimensional MRI characterization of the brain. Here we focused and reprocessed results from a recent study that identified potential imaging biomarkers of axonal injury pathology from the joint analysis of multidimensional MRI, in particular voxelwise T₁-T₂ and diffusion-T₂ spectra in human Corpus Callosum, and histopathological data. We tested the performance of NESMA and its effect on the accuracy of the injury biomarker maps, relative to the co-registered histological reference. Noise reduction improved the accuracy of the resulting injury biomarker maps, while permitting data reduction of 35.7 and 59.6% from the full dataset for T₁-T₂ and diffusion-T₂ cases, respectively. As successful clinical proof-of-concept applications of multidimensional MRI are continuously being introduced, reliable and robust noise removal and consequent acquisition acceleration would advance the field towards clinically-feasible diagnostic multidimensional MRI protocols.
