Low-frequency component of rectified EMG is temporally correlated with force and instantaneous rate of force fluctuations during steady contractions

Relationship between disturbances of CO2 homeostasis and force output characteristics during isometric knee extension

To determine whether disturbances of CO₂ homeostasis alter force output characteristics of lower limb muscles, participants performed four isometric knee extension trials (MVC_30%, 10s each with 20-s rest intervals) in three CO₂ conditions (normocapnia [NORM], hypercapnia [HYPER], and hypocapnia [HYPO]). Respiratory frequency and tidal volume were matched between CO₂ conditions. In each MVC_30%, the participants exerted a constant force (30% of maximum voluntary contraction [MVC]). The force coefficient of variation (Fcv) during each MVC_30% and MVC before and after the four MVC_30% trials were measured. For the means of the four trials, Fcv was significantly lower in HYPER than in HYPO. However, within HYPER, a significant positive correlation was found between the increase in end-tidal CO₂ partial pressure and the increase in Fcv. MVCs in NORM and HYPO decreased significantly over the four trials, while no such reduction was observed in HYPER. These results suggest that perturbed CO₂ homeostasis influences the force output characteristics independently of breathing pattern variables.

Ankle Joint Angle Influences Relative Torque Fluctuation during Isometric Plantar Flexion

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of changes in muscle length on the torque fluctuations and on related oscillations in muscle activity during voluntary isometric contractions of ankle plantar flexor muscles. Eleven healthy individuals were asked to perform voluntary isometric contractions of ankle muscles at five different contraction intensities from 10% to 70% of maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) and at three different muscle lengths, implemented by changing the ankle joint angle (plantar flexion of 26°-shorter muscle length; plantar flexion of 10°-neutral muscle length; dorsiflexion of 3°-longer muscle length). Surface electromyogram (EMG) signals were recorded from the skin surface over the triceps surae muscles, and rectified-and-smoothed EMG (rsEMG) were estimated to assess the oscillations in muscle activity. The absolute torque fluctuations (quantified by the standard deviation) were significantly higher during moderate-to-high contractions at the longer muscle length. Absolute torque fluctuations were found to be a linear function of torque output regardless of muscle length. In contrast, the relative torque fluctuations (quantified by the coefficient of variation) were higher at the shorter muscle length. However, both absolute and relative oscillations in muscle activities remained relatively consistent at different ankle joint angles for all plantar flexors. These findings suggest that the torque steadiness may be affected by not only muscle activities, but also by muscle length-dependent mechanical properties. This study provides more insights that muscle mechanics should be considered when explaining the steadiness in force output.

People with chronic low back pain display spatial alterations in high-density surface EMG-torque oscillations

We quantified the relationship between spatial oscillations in surface electromyographic (sEMG) activity and trunk-extension torque in individuals with and without chronic low back pain (CLBP), during two submaximal isometric lumbar extension tasks at 20% and 50% of their maximal voluntary torque. High-density sEMG (HDsEMG) signals were recorded from the lumbar erector spinae (ES) with a 64-electrode grid, and torque signals were recorded with an isokinetic dynamometer. Coherence and cross-correlation analyses were applied between the filtered interference HDsEMG and torque signals for each submaximal contraction. Principal component analysis was used to reduce dimensionality of HDsEMG data and improve the HDsEMG-based torque estimation. sEMG-torque coherence was quantified in the δ(0–5 Hz) frequency bandwidth. Regional differences in sEMG-torque coherence were also evaluated by creating topographical coherence maps. sEMG-torque coherence in the δ band and sEMG-torque cross-correlation increased with the increase in torque in the controls but not in the CLBP group (p = 0.018, p = 0.030 respectively). As torque increased, the CLBP group increased sEMG-torque coherence in more cranial ES regions, while the opposite was observed for the controls (p = 0.043). Individuals with CLBP show reductions in sEMG-torque relationships possibly due to the use of compensatory strategies and regional adjustments of ES-sEMG oscillatory activity.

Stress Detection from Surface Electromyography using Convolutional Neural Networks

The study of stress and its implications has been the focus of interest in various fields of science. Many automated/semi-automated stress detection systems based on physiological markers have been gaining enormous popularity and importance in recent years. Such non-voluntary physiological features exhibit unique characteristics in terms of reliability, accuracy. Combined with machine learning techniques, they offer a great field of study of stress identification and modelling. In this study, we explore the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN) for stress detection through surface electromyography signals (sEMG) of the trapezius muscle. One of the main advantages of this model is the use of the sEMG signal without computed features, contrary to classical machine learning algorithms. The proposed model achieved good results, with 73% f1-score for a multi-class classification and 82% in a bi-class classification.

Reconstruction of net force fluctuations from surface EMGs of multiple muscles in steady isometric plantarflexion

The purposes of this study were to clarify if force fluctuations during steady multi-muscle contractions have a temporal correlation with a low-frequency component of rectified surface EMG (rEMG) in the involved muscles and collection of that component across muscles allows for the reconstruction of force fluctuations across a wide range of contraction intensities. Healthy young men (n = 15) exerted steady isometric plantarflexion force at 5-60% of maximal force. Surface EMG was recorded from the medial and lateral gastrocnemii, soleus, peroneus longus, abductor hallucis, and tibialis anterior muscles. The cross-correlation function (CCF) between plantarflexion force fluctuations and low-pass filtered rEMG in each muscle was calculated for 8 s. To reconstruct force fluctuations from rEMGs, the product of rEMG and an identified constant factor were summed across muscles with time-lag compensation for electro-mechanical delay. A distinct peak of the CCF was found between plantarflexion force fluctuations and rEMG in most cases except for the tibialis anterior. The CCF peak was greatest in the medial gastrocnemius and soleus. Reconstructed force from rEMGs was temporally correlated with measured force fluctuations across contraction intensities (average CCF peak: r = 0.65). The results indicate that individual surface rEMG has a low-frequency component that is temporally correlated with net force fluctuations during steady multi-muscle contractions and contributes to the reconstruction of force fluctuations across a wide range of contraction intensities. It suggests a potential applicability of individual surface EMGs for identifying the contributing muscles to controlling or disturbing isometric steady force in multi-muscle contractions.

Robotic finger perturbation training improves finger postural steadiness and hand dexterity

The purpose of the study was to understand the effect of robotic finger perturbation training on steadiness in finger posture and hand dexterity in healthy young adults. A mobile robotic finger training system was designed to have the functions of high-speed mechanical response, two degrees of freedom, and adjustable loading amplitude and direction. Healthy young adults were assigned to one of the three groups: random perturbation training (RPT), constant force training (CFT), and control. Subjects in RPT and CFT performed steady posture training with their index finger using the robot in different modes: random force in RPT and constant force in CFT. After the 2-week intervention period, fluctuations of the index finger posture decreased only in RPT during steady position-matching tasks with an inertial load. Purdue pegboard test score improved also in RPT only. The relative change in finger postural fluctuations was negatively correlated with the relative change in the number of completed pegs in the pegboard test in RPT. The results indicate that finger posture training with random mechanical perturbations of varying amplitudes and directions of force is effective in improving finger postural steadiness and hand dexterity in healthy young adults.

Effects of Force Load, Muscle Fatigue, and Magnetic Stimulation on Surface Electromyography during Side Arm Lateral Raise Task: A Preliminary Study with Healthy Subjects

The aim of this study was to quantitatively investigate the effects of force load, muscle fatigue, and extremely low-frequency (ELF) magnetic stimulation on surface electromyography (SEMG) signal features during side arm lateral raise task. SEMG signals were recorded from 18 healthy subjects on the anterior deltoid using a BIOSEMI ActiveTwo system during side lateral raise task (with the right arm 90 degrees away from the body) with three different loads on the forearm (0 kg, 1 kg, and 3 kg; their order was randomized between subjects). The arm maintained the loads until the subject felt exhausted. The first 10 s recording for each load was regarded as nonfatigue status and the last 10 s before the subject was exhausted was regarded as fatigue status. The subject was then given a five-minute resting between different loads. Two days later, the same experiment was repeated on every subject, and this time the ELF magnetic stimulation was applied to the subject's deltoid muscle during the five-minute rest period. Three commonly used SEMG features, root mean square (RMS), median frequency (MDF), and sample entropy (SampEn), were analyzed and compared between different loads, nonfatigue/fatigue status, and ELF stimulation and no stimulation. Variance analysis results showed that the effect of force load on RMS was significant (p < 0.001) but not for MDF and SampEn (both p > 0.05). In comparison with nonfatigue status, for all the different force loads with and without ELF stimulation, RMS was significantly larger at fatigue (all p < 0.001) and MDF and SampEn were significantly smaller (all p < 0.001).

Increased Force Variability Is Associated with Altered Modulation of the Motorneuron Pool Activity in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Force control deficits have been repeatedly documented in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). They are associated with worse social and daily living skill impairments in patients suggesting that developing a more mechanistic understanding of the central and peripheral processes that cause them may help guide the development of treatments that improve multiple outcomes in ASD. The neuromuscular mechanisms underlying force control deficits are not yet understood. Seventeen individuals with ASD and 14 matched healthy controls completed an isometric index finger abduction test at 60% of their maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) during recording of the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle to determine the neuromuscular processes associated with sustained force variability. Central modulation of the motorneuron pool activation of the FDI muscle was evaluated at delta (0-4 Hz), alpha (4-10 Hz), beta (10-35 Hz) and gamma (35-60 Hz) frequency bands. ASD patients showed greater force variability than controls when attempting to maintain a constant force. Relative to controls, patients also showed increased central modulation of the motorneuron pool at beta and gamma bands. For controls, reduced force variability was associated with reduced delta frequency modulation of the motorneuron pool activity of the FDI muscle and increased modulation at beta and gamma bands. In contrast, delta, beta, and gamma frequency oscillations were not associated with force variability in ASD. These findings suggest that alterations of central mechanisms that control motorneuron pool firing may underlie the common and often impairing symptoms of ASD.

Analysis of the sEMG/force relationship using HD-sEMG technique and data fusion: A simulation study

The relationship between the surface Electromyogram (sEMG) signal and the force of an individual muscle is still ambiguous due to the complexity of experimental evaluation. However, understanding this relationship should be useful for the assessment of neuromuscular system in healthy and pathological contexts. In this study, we present a global investigation of the factors governing the shape of this relationship. Accordingly, we conducted a focused sensitivity analysis of the sEMG/force relationship form with respect to neural, functional and physiological parameters variation. For this purpose, we used a fast generation cylindrical model for the simulation of an 8×8 High Density-sEMG (HD-sEMG) grid and a twitch based force model for the muscle force generation. The HD-sEMG signals as well as the corresponding force signals were simulated in isometric non-fatiguing conditions and were based on the Biceps Brachii (BB) muscle properties. A total of 10 isometric constant contractions of 5s were simulated for each configuration of parameters. The Root Mean Squared (RMS) value was computed in order to quantify the sEMG amplitude. Then, an image segmentation method was used for data fusion of the 8×8 RMS maps. In addition, a comparative study between recent modeling propositions and the model proposed in this study is presented. The evaluation was made by computing the Normalized Root Mean Squared Error (NRMSE) of their fitting to the simulated relationship functions. Our results indicated that the relationship between the RMS (mV) and muscle force (N) can be modeled using a 3rd degree polynomial equation. Moreover, it appears that the obtained coefficients are patient-specific and dependent on physiological, anatomical and neural parameters.

Force control is related to low-frequency oscillations in force and surface EMG

Force variability during constant force tasks is directly related to oscillations below 0.5 Hz in force. However, it is unknown whether such oscillations exist in muscle activity. The purpose of this paper, therefore, was to determine whether oscillations below 0.5 Hz in force are evident in the activation of muscle. Fourteen young adults (21.07±2.76 years, 7 women) performed constant isometric force tasks at 5% and 30% MVC by abducting the left index finger. We recorded the force output from the index finger and surface EMG from the first dorsal interosseous (FDI) muscle and quantified the following outcomes: 1) variability of force using the SD of force; 2) power spectrum of force below 2 Hz; 3) EMG bursts; 4) power spectrum of EMG bursts below 2 Hz; and 5) power spectrum of the interference EMG from 10–300 Hz. The SD of force increased significantly from 5 to 30% MVC and this increase was significantly related to the increase in force oscillations below 0.5 Hz (R² = 0.82). For both force levels, the power spectrum for force and EMG burst was similar and contained most of the power from 0–0.5 Hz. Force and EMG burst oscillations below 0.5 Hz were highly coherent (coherence = 0.68). The increase in force oscillations below 0.5 Hz from 5 to 30% MVC was related to an increase in EMG burst oscillations below 0.5 Hz (R² = 0.51). Finally, there was a strong association between the increase in EMG burst oscillations below 0.5 Hz and the interference EMG from 35–60 Hz (R² = 0.95). In conclusion, this finding demonstrates that bursting of the EMG signal contains low-frequency oscillations below 0.5 Hz, which are associated with oscillations in force below 0.5 Hz.

Neuromuscular response of the trunk to inertial based sudden perturbations following whole body vibration exposure

The effects of whole body vibration exposure on the neuromuscular responses following inertial-based trunk perturbations were examined. Kinematic and surface EMG (sEMG) data were collected while subjects were securely seated on a robotic platform. Participants were either exposed to 10 min of vibration or not, which was followed by sudden inertial trunk perturbations with and without timing and direction knowledge. Amplitude of sEMG was analyzed for data collected during the vibration protocol, whereas the onset of sEMG activity and lumbar spine angle were analyzed for the perturbation protocol. Data from the vibration protocol did not show a difference in amplitude of sEMG for participants exposed to vibration and those not. The perturbation protocol data showed that those not exposed to vibration had a 14% faster muscle onset, despite data showing no difference in fatigue level.

Muscle shear modulus measured with ultrasound shear-wave elastography across a wide range of contraction intensity

INTRODUCTION

In this study we examine the repeatability of measuring muscle shear modulus using ultrasound shear-wave elastography between trials and between days, and the association between shear modulus and contraction intensity over a wide range of intensities.

METHODS

Shear modulus of the biceps brachii was determined using ultrasound shear-wave elastography during static elbow flexion (up to 60% of maximal contraction) in healthy young adults.

RESULTS

The correspondence of shear modulus was confirmed in phantoms between the manufacturer-calibrated values and the shear-wave elastography values. The intraclass correlation coefficient of muscle shear modulus was high: 0.978 between trials and 0.948 between days. Shear modulus increased linearly with elbow flexion torque across contraction intensity, and its slope was associated negatively with muscle strength.

CONCLUSIONS

Muscle shear modulus measured with ultrasound shear-wave elastography may be useful for inferring muscle stiffness across a wide range of contraction intensity. In addition, it has high repeatability between trials and between days.

Oscillations in motor unit discharge are reflected in the low-frequency component of rectified surface EMG and the rate of change in force

Common drive to a motor unit (MU) pool manifests as low-frequency oscillations in MU discharge rate, producing fluctuations in muscle force. The aim of the study was to examine the temporal correlation between instantaneous MU discharge rate and rectified EMG in low frequencies. Additionally, we attempted to examine whether there is a temporal correlation between the low-frequency oscillations in MU discharge rate and the first derivative of force (dF/dt). Healthy young subjects produced steady submaximal force with their right finger as a single task or while maintaining a pinch-grip force with the left hand as a dual task. Surface EMG and fine-wire MU potentials were recorded from the first dorsal interosseous muscle in the right hand. Surface EMG was band-pass filtered (5-1,000 Hz) and full-wave rectified. Rectified surface EMG and the instantaneous discharge rate of MUs were smoothed by a Hann-window of 400 ms duration (equivalent to 2 Hz low-pass filtering). In each of the identified MUs, the smoothed MU discharge rate was positively correlated with the rectified-and-smoothed EMG as confirmed by the distinct peak in cross-correlation function with greater values in the dual task compared with the single task. Additionally, the smoothed MU discharge rate was temporally correlated with dF/dt more than with force and with rectified-and-smoothed EMG. The results indicated that the low-frequency component of rectified surface EMG and the first derivative of force provide temporal information on the low-frequency oscillations in the MU discharge rate.
