Ferulic acid-g-tamarind gum/guar gum based in situ gel-forming powders as wound dressings

The current research endeavour aimed to synthesize ferulic acid grafted tamarind gum/guar gum (FA-g-TG/GG) based powders as wound dressings, which could form in situ gels upon contact with wound exudates. In this context, variable amounts of FA were initially grafted with TG via the Steglich esterification reaction protocol and the resulting conjugates were subsequently amalgamated with GG and lyophilized to produce dry powders (F-1 - -F-3) with average particle size within 5.10-5.54 μm and average angle of repose ∼30°. These powders were structurally characterized with 1H NMR, FTIR, DSC, TGA, XRD and SEM analyses. Pristine TG, FA-g-TG and FA-g-TG/GG powders (F-2) revealed their distinct morphological structures and variable negative zeta potential values (-11.06 mV-25.50 mV). Among various formulation (F-1-F-3), F-2 demonstrated an acceptable powder-to-gel conversion time (within 20 min), suitable water vapour transmission rates (WVTR, 2564.94 ± 32.47 g/m2/day) and excellent water retention abilities and swelling profiles (4559.00 ± 41.57 %) in wound fluid. The powders were cytocompatible and conferred antioxidant activities. The powders also displayed fibroblast cell proliferation, migration and adhesion properties, implying their wound-healing potentials. Thus, the developed in situ gel-forming powders could be employed as promising dressings for wound management.

Hyaluronate functionalized Span-Labrasol nanovesicular transdermal therapeutic system of ferulic acid targeting diabetic nephropathy

Diabetic kidney disease, known as diabetic nephropathy (DN), is a widespread severe diabetes complication leading to kidney failure. Due to the lack of efficacious therapies, this study endeavors to enhance DN therapeutic effectiveness of ferulic acid (FRA), a natural phenolic with poor oral bioavailability, by developing a transdermal kidney-targeted spanlastic formulation. Spanlastics (SP) nanovesicles were prepared using Span 60 and Labrasol or Brij35 as edge activators (EA). Cationic guar (CG) and hyaluronic acid (HA) were employed as coatings. The formulations were assessed for entrapment efficiency (EE), particle size (PS) and zeta potential (ZP). A 21 × 31 factorial optimization of FRA spanlastic formulations revealed the desirable nanoformula was FRA-L-H-SP comprising Labrasol and hyaluronate coating. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), Diphenylpicrylhydrazyl (DPPH) antioxidant activity, in-vitro release, and rat skin ex-vivo permeation assessed this formula and the uncoated one (FRA-L-SP). Biochemical indicators and histopathology for diabetes and kidney injury were evaluated in the Streptozotocin (STZ)-induced DN rat model. Results showed significant improvements after treatment with FRA-L-H-SP compared to FRA-L-SP and free FRA, with decreased blood glucose, creatinine, and intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) levels and increased insulin, AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), and sirtuins (SIRT). This enhancement can be acknowledged as passive targeting of SP and active targeting properties of hyaluronic to cluster of differentiation 44 (CD44) receptors, revealing the potential to improve DN pathophysiology.

Effect of cationized guar gum on stability and bioaccessibility of curcumin-loaded Pickering emulsion stabilized by starch nanoparticles

To enhance stability and bioaccessibility of curcumin in Pickering emulsions stabilized by starch nanoparticles (SNP), cationized guar gum (CGG) was incorporated into the emulsion. Zeta potential results revealed that SNP and CGG formed electrostatic interactions, resulting in stable interfacial layer with higher hydrophobicity. Adding 0.4 % CGG maintained a homogeneous phase without significant droplet size change for up to one month. The emulsion with 0.4 % CGG demonstrated stable storage under varying pH (4-10), ionic strength (0-10 mM NaCl), and freeze-thaw cycles (up to 3). When optimized Pickering emulsion system was applied to curcumin encapsulation, curcumin-loaded emulsions were stably maintained for up to one month. The curcumin retained approximately 100 % stability under thermal (90 °C) and UV (12h) treatments. In the optimized emulsion, starch components resisted digestion in oral and gastroenteric phases but were primarily digested in small intestine, resulting in an increasing bioaccessibility from 88.23 to 96.92 %.

Enhanced flexibility of high-yield bamboo pulp fibers via cellulase immobilization within guar gum/polyacrylamide/polydopamine interpenetrating network hydrogels

Softness is a crucial criterion in assessing the comfort and usability of tissue paper. Flexible fibers contribute to the softness of the tissue paper by allowing the sheets to conform to the contours of the skin without feeling rough or abrasive. This study focuses on developing innovative CGG/APAM/PDA hydrogels with interpenetrating networks consisting of cationic guar gum, anionic polyacrylamide, and polydopamine for cellulase immobilization, aimed at improving bamboo fiber flexibility. Cellulase biomolecules are efficiently immobilized on CGG/APAM/PDA hydrogels through the Schiff base reaction. Immobilized cellulases have a wider pH applicability than free cellulases, good storage stability, and can maintain high relative activity at relatively high temperatures. The treatment of bamboo fibers with immobilized cellulase results in a significant increase in flexibility, reaching 6.90 × 1014 N·m2, which is 7.18 times higher than that of untreated fibers. The immobilization of cellulases using CGG/APAM/PDA hydrogels as carriers results in a substantial enhancement of storage stability, pH applicability, and inter-fiber bonding strength, as well as the capacity to sustain high relative enzymatic activity at elevated temperatures. The immobilization of cellulase within CGG/APAM/PDA interpenetrating network hydrogels presents a viable strategy for enhancing bamboo fiber flexibility, thereby expanding the accessibility of tissue products.

Polyelectrolyte complex formation of alginate and chito oligosaccharide is influenced by their proportion and alginate molecular weight

Sodium alginate (SA) and chito oligosaccharide (COS) are widely used food additives in the food industry, and exploring their interaction to form polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) may provide insights into food development. In the present study, the effects of viscosity-average molecular weight (Mv) and relative amounts of SA on the formation of sodium alginate/chito oligosaccharide polyelectrolyte (SCP) complexes were investigated. The results showed that the electrostatic interaction between -COOH and -NH2 and the hydrogen bonding between OH, were attributed to the formation of the SCP complexes. Then the formation and properties of SCP complexes were greatly dependent on the Mv and the relative amount of SA. SA with Mv of ≥2.16 × 106 Da could form spherical SCP complexes, while the SA/COS ratio (w/w) ≥ 0.8 was not conducive to the formation of SCP complexes. Moreover, the SCP complexes were more stable in the gastric environment than in the intestinal condition. In addition, 1.73 × 107 Da was the optimal Mv of SA for SCP complexes formation. This study contributed to a comprehensive understanding of the interaction between SA and COS, and shed light on the potential application of SA and COS formulation to develop new food products.

Leucaena leucocephala succinate based polyelectrolyte complexes for colon delivery of synbiotic in management of inflammatory bowel disease

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) formed by the interaction between oppositely charged polymers have emerged as promising carriers for accomplishing colon-specific release. In this study, we have explored the potential of polyelectrolyte complexes between a succinate derivative of Leucaena leucocephala galactomannan and cationic guar gum for colon delivery of synbiotic. The PECs were prepared using a polyelectrolyte complexation method and characterized. The PECs exhibited excellent stability, with high encapsulation efficiency for both probiotics (95.53 %) and prebiotics (83.33 %). In vitro studies demonstrated enhanced survivability and proliferation of the encapsulated probiotics in the presence of prebiotics (93.29 %). The SEM images revealed a smooth and firm structure with reduced number of pores when both prebiotic and probiotic were encapsulated together. The treatment with synbiotic PECs in acetic acid induced IBD rats significantly relieves colitis symptoms as was evident from colon/body ratio, DAI score and histopathology studies. An increase in the protein and reduced glutathione levels and reduction in superoxide dismutase activity was observed in colitic rats that received synbiotic treatment as compared to colitic rats. Overall, this study highlights the potential of Leucaena leucocephala succinate-cationic guar gum PECs as a promising system for colon-specific synbiotic delivery, with implications for improved gut health and the treatment of various gastrointestinal disorders.

NAD+-associated-hyaluronic acid and poly(L-lysine) polyelectrolyte complexes: An evaluation of their potential for ocular drug delivery

This study details the formation and characterisation of a novel nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+)-associated polymeric nanoparticle system. The development of a polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) composed of two natural polyelectrolytes, hyaluronic acid and poly(L-lysine), and an evaluation of its suitability for NAD+ ocular delivery, primarily based on its physicochemical properties and in vitro release profile under physiological ocular flow rates, were of key focus. Following optimisation of formulation method conditions such as complexation pH, mode of addition, and charge ratio, the PEC was successfully formulated under mild formulation conditions via polyelectrolyte complexation. With a size of 235.1 ± 19.0 nm, a PDI value of 0.214 ± 0.140, and a zeta potential value of - 38.0 ± 1.1 mV, the chosen PEC, loaded with 430 µg of NAD+ per mg of PEC, exhibited non-Fickian, sustained release at physiological flowrates of 10.9 ± 0.2 mg of NAD+ over 14 h. PECs containing up to 200 µM of NAD+ did not induce any significant cytotoxic effects on an immortalised human corneal epithelial cell line. Using fluorescent labeling, the NAD+-associated PECs demonstrated retention within the corneal epithelium layer of a porcine model up to 6 h post incubation under physiological conditions. A study of the physicochemical behaviour of the PECs, in terms of size, zeta potential and NAD+ complexation in response to environmental stimuli,highlighted the dynamic nature of the PEC matrix and its dependence on both pH and ionic condition. Considering the successful formation of reproducible NAD+-associated PECs with suitable characteristics for ocular drug delivery via an inexpensive formulation method, they provide a promising platform for NAD+ ocular delivery with a strong potential to improve ocular health.

Zinc Oxide-Incorporated Chitosan-Poly(methacrylic Acid) Polyelectrolyte Complex as a Wound Healing Material

A novel type of porous films based on the ZnO-incorporated chitosan-poly(methacrylic acid) polyelectrolyte complex was developed as a wound healing material. The structure of porous films was established by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and porosity studies revealed that the pore size and porosity of the developed films increased with the increase in zinc oxide (ZnO) concentration. The porous films with maximum ZnO content exhibited improved water swelling degree (1400%), controlled biodegradation (12%) for 28 days, a porosity of 64%, and a tensile strength of 0.47 MPa. Moreover, these films presented antibacterial activity toward Staphylococcus aureus and Micrococcus sp. due to the existence of ZnO particles. Cytotoxicity studies demonstrated that the developed films had no cytotoxicity against the mouse mesenchymal stem (C3H10T1/2) cell line. These results reveal that ZnO-incorporated chitosan-poly(methacrylic acid) films could be used as an ideal material for wound healing application.

Methylene blue removal from aqueous solutions using a biochar/gellan gum hydrogel composite: Effect of agitation mode on sorption kinetics

Hydrogel membranes are prepared by casting a mixture of gellan gum (associated with PVA) and biochar produced from a local Egyptian plant. The mesoporous material is characterized by a specific surface area close to 134 m² g^-1, a residue of 28 % (at 800 °C), and a pH_PZC close to 6.43. After grinding, the material is tested for Methylene Blue sorption at pH 10.5: sorption capacity reaches 1.70 mmol MB g^-1 (synergistic effect of the precursors). The sorption isotherms are fitted by both Langmuir and Sips eqs. MB sorption increases with temperature: the sorption is endothermic (∆H°: 12.9 kJ mol^-1), with positive entropy (∆S°: 125 J mol^-1 K^-1). Uptake kinetics are controlled by agitation speed (optimum ≈200 rpm) and resistance to intraparticle diffusion. The profiles are strongly affected by the mode of agitation: the equilibrium time (≈180 min) is reduced to 20-30 min under sonication (especially at frequency: 80 kHz). The mode of agitation controls the best fitting equation: pseudo-first order rate agitation for mechanical agitation contrary to pseudo-second order rate under sonication. The sorption of MB is poorly affected by ionic strength (loss <6 % in 45 g L^-1 NaCl solution). Desorption (faster than sorption) is completely achieved using 0.7 M HCl solution. At the sixth recycling, the loss in sorption is close to 5 % (≈ decrease in desorption efficiency). The process is successfully applied for the treatment of MB-spiked industrial solution: the color index decreases by >97 % with a sorbent dose close to 1 g L^-1; a higher dose is required for maximum reduction of the COD (60 % at 3 g L^-1).

Progress and opportunities in Gellan gum-based materials: A review of preparation, characterization and emerging applications

Gellan gum, a microbial exopolysaccharide, is biodegradable and has potential to fill several key roles in many fields from food to pharmacy, biomedicine and tissue engineering. In order to improve the physicochemical and biological properties of gellan gum, some researchers take advantage of numerous hydroxyl groups and the free carboxyl present in each repeating unit. As a result, design and development of gellan-based materials have advanced significantly. The goal of this review is to provide a summary of the most recent, high-quality research trends that have used gellan gum as a polymeric component in the design of numerous cutting-edge materials with applications in various fields.

pH responsive cationic guar gum-borate self-healing hydrogels for muco-adhesion

We developed a new muco-adhesive hydrogel composed of cationic guar gum (CGG) and boric acid (BA). The CGG-BA precursor solution of 0.5-2% w/v concentration exhibited fluidity at low pH (3-5), while gelation occurred within 1 min at physiological pH (7-8) conditions. Scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy results confirmed the change in physical and chemical behavior, respectively, with change in pH. The pH-responsive self-healing ability was analyzed through microscopy and rheology. CGG-BA hydrogels showed good self-healing property at pH 7.4. The in vitro biocompatibility test of the hydrogel studied using NIH3T3 and NHEK cells showed that it was non-toxic at concentrations of CGG-BA below 2% w/v. Ex vivo mucoadhesive tests confirmed the hydrogel's potential for use as a muco-adhesive. Burst pressure tests were conducted using pig esophageal mucosa and the results showed that at pH 7.4, 1% w/v CGG-BA self-healable hydrogel resisted about 8 ± 2 kPa pressure, comparable to that of Fibrin glue. This was higher than that at solution (pH 5) and brittle gel (pH 10) conditions. To confirm the good adhesive strength of the self-healable hydrogels, lap shear tests conducted, resulted in adhesive strengths measured in the range of 1.0 ± 0.5-2.0 ± 0.6 kPa, which was also comparable to fibrin glue control 1.8 ± 0.6 kPa. Hydrogel weight measurements showed that 40-80% gel lasted under physiological conditions for 10 h. The results suggest that CGG-BA hydrogel has potential as a pH responsive mucosal protectant biomaterial.

Physicochemical and Structural Characterization of Alkali-Treated Biopolymer Sphingan WL Gum from Marine Sphingomonas sp. WG

Sphingan WL gum (WL), a kind of exopolysaccharide, is produced by Sphingomonas sp. WG, which was screened from sea mud samples of Jiaozhou Bay by our group. The solubility of WL was investigated in this work. First, 1 mg/mL of WL solution was stirred at room temperature for at least 2 h to obtain a uniform opaque liquid, and further the solution became clear with the increased NaOH and stirring time. Subsequently, the structural features, solubility, and rheological properties of WL before and after alkali treatment were compared systematically. FTIR, NMR, and zeta potential results indicate that the alkali causes acetyl group hydrolysis and carboxyl group deprotonation. XRD, DLS, GPC, and AFM results suggest that the alkali destroys the ordered arrangement and inter- and intrachain entanglement of polysaccharide chains. In the same case, 0.9 M NaOH-treated WL presents better solubility (stirring for 15 min to obtain a clarified solution) but, unsurprisingly, worsens rheological properties. All results demonstrated that the good solubility and transparency of alkali-treated WL will help promote its postmodification and application.

Stability improvement of carboxymethyl cellulose/chitosan complex beads by thermal treatment

Carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and chitosan (CHI) are two well-known natural polymer derivatives, as such the CMC@CHI complex beads fulfill many requirements for bio-related and safety-required applications. However, poor mechanical properties of CMC@CHI beads hinder their applications. We managed to improve the beads stability by a simple thermal treatment during the bead preparation. The effects of temperature, changing from 25 °C to 75 °C, on the stability of the formed beads were investigated. The morphology, diameter, shell thickness and structure of the beads treated at different temperature were analyzed using SEM, XPS and FTIR. The mechanical test and swelling experiments showed that the thermal treatment enhanced the bead's ability to withstand pressure and swelling. The beads treated at 75 °C showed the best pressure resistance, while the beads treated at 55 °C exhibited the highest swelling capability without losing integrity. This method is convenient to implement, not only improves the stability, but also controls the swelling capacity and mechanical properties of the beads, which are important for their potential applications in adsorption and controlled release. More importantly, this work offered insights on the effects of thermal treatment on the complexation process of the two polysaccharide molecular chains.

Evaluation of chitosan/xanthan gum polyelectrolyte complexes potential for pH-dependent oral delivery of escin

Escin is an amphiphilic and weakly acidic drug that oral administration may lead to the irritation of gastric mucosa. The entrapment of escin into chitosan (CH)/xanthan gum (XG)-based polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) can facilitate controlled drug release which may be beneficial for the reduction of its side effects. This study aimed to investigate the influence of escin content and drying method on the formation, physicochemical, and controlled, pH-dependent drug release properties of CH/XG-based PECs. Measurements of transmittance, conductivity, and rheological characterization confirmed the formation of CH/XG-based PECs with escin entrapped at escin-to-polymers mass ratios 1:1, 1:2, and 1:4. Ambient-dried PECs had higher yield, entrapment efficiency, and escin content in comparison with spray-dried ones. FT-IR spectra confirmed the interactions between CH, XG, and escin, which were stronger in ambient-dried PECs. PXRD and DSC analyses showed the amorphous escin character in all dry PECs, regardless of the drying method. The most promising controlled and pH-dependent in vitro escin release was from the ambient-dried PEC at the escin-to-polymers mass ratio of 1:1. For that reason and due to the highest yield and entrapment efficiency, this carrier has the potential to prevent the irritation of gastric mucosa after oral administration of escin.

Hyaluronic Acid: Its Versatile Use in Ocular Drug Delivery with a Specific Focus on Hyaluronic Acid-Based Polyelectrolyte Complexes

Extensive research is currently being conducted into novel ocular drug delivery systems (ODDS) that are capable of surpassing the limitations associated with conventional intraocular anterior and posterior segment treatments. Nanoformulations, including those synthesised from the natural, hydrophilic glycosaminoglycan, hyaluronic acid (HA), have gained significant traction due to their enhanced intraocular permeation, longer retention times, high physiological stability, inherent biocompatibility, and biodegradability. However, conventional nanoformulation preparation methods often require large volumes of organic solvent, chemical cross-linkers, and surfactants, which can pose significant toxicity risks. We present a comprehensive, critical review of the use of HA in the field of ophthalmology and ocular drug delivery, with a discussion of the physicochemical and biological properties of HA that render it a suitable excipient for drug delivery to both the anterior and posterior segments of the eye. The pivotal focus of this review is a discussion of the formation of HA-based nanoparticles via polyelectrolyte complexation, a mild method of preparation driven primarily by electrostatic interaction between opposing polyelectrolytes. To the best of our knowledge, despite the growing number of publications centred around the development of HA-based polyelectrolyte complexes (HA-PECs) for ocular drug delivery, no review articles have been published in this area. This review aims to bridge the identified gap in the literature by (1) reviewing recent advances in the area of HA-PECs for anterior and posterior ODD, (2) describing the mechanism and thermodynamics of polyelectrolyte complexation, and (3) critically evaluating the intrinsic and extrinsic formulation parameters that must be considered when designing HA-PECs for ocular application.

Hierarchically Structured, All-Aqueous-Coated Hydrophobic Surfaces with pH-Selective Droplet Transfer Capability

Often inspired by nature, techniques for precise droplet manipulation have found applications in microfluidics, microreactors, and water harvesting. However, a widely applicable strategy for surface modification combining simultaneous hydrophobicity and pH-sensitivity has not yet been achieved by employing environmentally friendly assembly conditions. The introduction of pH-responsive groups to an otherwise fluorinated polyphosphazene (PPZ) unlocks pH-selective droplet capture and transfer. Here, an all-aqueous layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition of polyelectrolytes is used to create unique hydrophobic coatings, endowing surfaces with the ability to sense environmental pH. The high hydrophobicity of these coatings (ultimately reaching a contact angle >120° on flat surfaces) is enabled by the formation of hydrophobic nanoscale domains and controllable by the degree of fluorination of PPZs, polyamine-binding partners, deposition pH, and coating thickness. Inspired by the hierarchical structure of rose petals, these versatile coatings reach a contact angle >150° when deposited on structured surfaces while introducing a tunable adhesivity that enables precise droplet manipulation. The films exhibited a strongly pronounced parahydrophobic rose petal behavior characterized through the contact angle hysteresis. Depositing as few as five bilayers (∼25 nm) on microstructured rather than smooth substrates resulted in superhydrophobicity with water contact angles >150° and the attenuation of the contact angle hysteresis, enabling highly controlled transfer of aqueous droplets. The pH-selective droplet transfer was achieved between surfaces with either the same microstructure and LbL film building blocks, which were assembled at different pH, or between surfaces with different microstructures coated with identical films. The demonstrated capability of these hydrophobic LbL films to endow surfaces with controlled hydrophobicity through adsorption from aqueous solutions and control the adhesion and transfer of water droplets between surfaces can be used in droplet-based microfluidics applications and water collection/harvesting.

The Potential of Polyelectrolyte Multilayer Films as Drug Delivery Materials

Polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) represent a group of polyelectrolyte complex (PEC)–based materials widely investigated in the biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences. Despite the unflagging popularity of the aforementioned systems in tissue engineering, only a few updated scientific reports concerning PEM potential in drug administration can be found. In fact, PEM coatings are currently recognized as important tools for functionalizing implantable scaffolds; however, only a small amount of attention has been given to PEMs as drug delivery materials. Scientific reports on PEMs reveal two dominant reasons for the limited usability of multilayers in pharmaceutical technology: complex and expensive preparation techniques as well as high sensitivity of interacting polyelectrolytes to the varieties of internal and external factors. The aim of this work was to analyze the latest approaches, concerning the potential of PEMs in pharmacy, chemical technology, and (primarily) tissue engineering, with special attention given to possible polymer combinations, technological parameters, and physicochemical characteristics, such as hydrophilicity, adhesive and swelling properties, and internal/external structures of the systems formed. Careful recognition of the above factors is crucial in the development of PEM-based drug delivery materials.

Microfluidics-based production of chitosan-gellan nanocomplexes encapsulating caffeine

Electrostatic complexes produced by interactions between polysaccharides have promising applications in the medical, pharmaceutical and food fields. In this light, for the development of such particles, microfluidics emerges as a promising technique in which processes occur at a strict laminar flow regime, allowing diffusion-dominated transport and particle formation in highly-controlled conditions. As a proof of concept, we compared bulk versus microfluidic (different devices simulating a range of residence times) processes for the production of electrostatic complexes of gellan with either chitosan (molecular weight ∼ 28 kDa) or hydrolyzed chitosan (molecular weight ∼ 3 kDa). Regardless of the process, polysaccharide solutions (pH 4.5) were mixed in pre-defined concentrations (polysaccharide ratios) to form electrostatic complexes that were used to encapsulate caffeine. These complexes were characterized by zeta potential measurements and particle size distribution. Overall, microfluidics produced complexes with improved characteristics such as lower polydispersity index (PDI ∼ 0.1) and mean size (∼200 nm) when compared to the conventional bulk process (PDI ∼ 0.3 and mean size ∼ 400 nm). Moreover, hydrolyzed chitosan (HC) contributed to an even smaller size and PDI value of the complexes. Such outcome is associated with the lower molecular weight and higher solubility of HC when comparing to conventional chitosan, which in turn improves electrostatic complexation. Caffeine could also be encapsulated in all complexes, but the highest encapsulation efficiency was achieved using microfluidics (70%) and with the geometry that provided a longer residence time. Therefore, we were able to demonstrate that microfluidics is clearly an effective strategy for generating electrostatic complexes with improved properties. Ultimately, this technique demonstrated a high potential for the production of vehicles of bioactive compounds.

A Review of Gum Hydrocolloid Polyelectrolyte Complexes (PEC) for Biomedical Applications: Their Properties and Drug Delivery Studies

The utilization of natural gum polysaccharides as the vehicle for drug delivery systems and other biomedical applications has increased in recent decades. Their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and price are much cheaper than other materials. It is also renewable and available in massive amounts, which are the main reasons for its use in pharmaceutical applications. Gum can be easily functionalized with other natural polymers to enhance their applications. Various aspects of the utilization of natural gums in the forms of polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) for drug delivery systems are discussed in this review. The application of different mathematical models were used to represent the drug release mechanisms from PECs; these models include a zero-order equation, first-order equation, Higuchi, simplified Higuchi, Korsmeyer–Peppas, and Peppas–Sahlin.

An Extensive Review of Natural Polymers Used as Coatings for Postharvest Shelf-Life Extension: Trends and Challenges

Global demand for minimally processed fruits and vegetables is increasing due to the tendency to acquire a healthy lifestyle. Losses of these foods during the chain supply reach as much as 30%; reducing them represents a challenge for the industry and scientific sectors. The use of edible packaging based on biopolymers is an alternative to mitigate the negative impact of conventional films and coatings on environmental and human health. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that natural coatings added with functional compounds reduce the post-harvest losses of fruits and vegetables without altering their sensorial and nutritive properties. Furthermore, the enhancement of their mechanical, structural, and barrier properties can be achieved through mixing two or more biopolymers to form composite coatings and adding plasticizers and/or cross-linking agents. This review shows the latest updates, tendencies, and challenges in the food industry to develop eco-friendly food packaging from diverse natural sources, added with bioactive compounds, and their effect on perishable foods. Moreover, the methods used in the food industry and the new techniques used to coat foods such as electrospinning and electrospraying are also discussed. Finally, the tendency and challenges in the development of edible films and coatings for fresh foods are reviewed.

Biodegradable polyelectrolyte complexes of chitosan and partially crosslinked dextran phosphate with potential for biomedical applications

Polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) are spontaneously formed by mixing oppositely charged polyelectrolyte solutions without the use of organic solvents and chemical crosslinkers are great candidate carriers for drug delivery. Herein, biodegradable antimicrobial polyelectrolyte complexes of chitosan - dextran phosphate (DPCS) containing cefazolin were developed and characterized in order to assess their suitability for biomedical applications. For this purpose, the simultaneous partial crosslinking and functionalization of dextran with phosphoric acid in a urea melt under reduced pressure were studied. The functional group content and molecular weight of dextran phosphate were varied in order to establish their influence on gel fraction yield, thermal properties and morphologies of the hydrogels. The stoichiometric PECs of DPCS showed good in vitro biocompatibility, pH sensitivity and biodegradability depending on the hydrogel composition. The release of drug from cefazolin-loaded DPCS hydrogels was through non-Fickian diffusion and displayed long sustained-release time. The drug-loaded hydrogels showed antimicrobial activity against Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. The tunable degradation behavior under physiological conditions in combination with biocompatibility of the pristine DPCS and high antibacterial efficacy drug-loaded hydrogels may render the presented materials interesting for biomedical applications.

Synthesis and characterization of a novel, pH-responsive, bola-based dynamic crosslinked fracturing fluid

Fracturing fluids are important media for hydraulic fracturing. Typically, the fluids are gelled using a polymeric gelling agent. Technological improvements over the years have focused primarily on improving the rheological performance, thermal stability, and the clean-up of crosslinked gels. In this study, novel supramolecular assembly of a low-damage fracturing fluid combining an ionic polymer gel (hydroxypropyl trimethylammonium chloride guar-cationic guar) and a bola surfactant fluid (bola carboxylate polypropylene glycol) is carried out and it is reported to have improved properties and special characteristics due to the synergistic effects of the dual systems, which are different from those of polymer gels and surfactant fluids. The viscosity of the fracturing fluid shows a sudden increase upon an increase in temperature and excellent self-assembly recovery after shearing. The fracturing fluid exhibits pH-responsive viscosity changes and low permeability impairment, due to the formation of a network structure and supramolecular microspheres at different pH values.

Enhancement of biocompatibility and carbohydrate absorption control potential of rosmarinic acid through crosslinking into microparticles

Rosmarinic acid (RA), a bioflavonoid and antioxidant that exists in plants of the Lamiaceae family, was crosslinked into particles as poly(Rosmarinic Acid) (p(RA)) via an emulsion crosslinking method. The particles were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, solid state nuclear magnetic resonance 13C NMR spectroscopy, and thermal gravimetric analysis. The zeta potential values of p(RA) particles were determined at different pHs; the isoelectric point was estimated as pH 1.2. The release of monomeric RA from the particles at 37.5 °C was found to be similar at different pHs, 1.0, 7.4, and 11.0. The effects of p(RA) on hemolysis and coagulation were found to be minimal. The antioxidant activity of p(RA) particles and RA monomer were almost indistinguishable suggesting that p(RA) particles may be used as an antioxidant. On a per weight basis, p(RA) particles were ~66% less cytotoxic to mammalian cells that RA monomer, as assessed using COS-1 cells. In addition, p(RA) was an 8.6-fold stronger inhibitor of α-glycosidase than RA; the IC50s of the monomer and particles were 0.121 and 0.014 mg/mL, respectively. The strong inhibitory effect of p(RA) on α-glycosidase, coupled with its reduced cytotoxicity and antioxidant activity, provide new opportunities for the use of p(RA).
